William Sanderson: His Time on True Blood

April 27, 2009

william-sanderson3William Sanderson, who plays Sheriff Bud Dearborne on Alan Ball’s hit HBO TV series True Blood spoke recently with Marilyn Beck and Stacy Jenel Smith from Creators.com regarding his time on the show.

When asked about his role as Sheriff Bud Dearborne and what does he see happening with his character on the show he stated that:

“I don’t know how much longer I’ll survive. To be honest, there’s not much on Bud in the books,… I’m too timid to ask, ‘Am I getting killed off?”

One of the producers that Mr. Sanderson had previously worked with on “Deadwood” jokingly told him that his character does not get killed before the eleventh episode because he is directing it, in response to his fate in season two of True Blood which returns on Sunday, June 14, 2009 on HBO.

Mr. Sanderson is known for his previous work on the “Bob Newhart Show” as Larry, on “Deadwood” and for his film roles including the Toymaker in “Bladerunner.”

Mr. Sanderson was asked how is it to work with Anna Paquin and cast members much younger then him in terms of the work schedule. He stated that:

“If you’re shooting ’til 4 or 5 a.m., you think they may be joking when they talk about going home and making dinner or playing with their kids. But they’re not. I worry about them sapping their energy. All that youthful vigor can be intimidating, he acknowledges, but I’m not intimidated by anyone when it comes to talent. Not to sound conceited. Don’t ever get your talent mixed up with your salary — I hope I never forget that.”

Alexander Skarsgard May Not Appear in Thor Movie

April 25, 2009

thoralexAlexander Skarsgard who plays Eric Northman from Alan Ball’s hit HBO TV series True Blood was rumoured last month to be the leading contender for the role of the Norse god “Thor” in director Kenneth Branagh’s upcoming movie of the same name.

However despite fitting the role perfectly (6’4”, blond and Scandinavian) it seems that Alexander is no longer in the running for the part as he mentioned to E!Online when asked about the role during the True Blood panel discussion at the PaleyFest’09 on April 13, 2009, “No, I don’t think so I haven’t gotten the call, so…”

Charlie Hunnam

Charlie Hunnam

There are several actors that are still being considered for the title role in the upcoming “Thor” film, including “Sons of Anarchy” star Charlie Hunnam.  According to IGN the 29 year old, 6’1” British actor, stated that he indeed screen-tested for the role of the god of thunder, but it was only one screen test.  Mr. Hunnam stated that he still doesn’t know whether Marvel has chosen its “Thor“, but his people have been talking to the studio. Mr. Hunnam believes that since the start date of “Thor” was pushed back a few months, Marvel is taking its time to make the best decision for the film.  So you never know there still may be a chance for Alexander, remember he almost did not get the part on True Blood had it not been for the delay in production due to the writers’ strike.  Maybe the same thing will happen this time.

True Blood’s Vampires The New Bad Boys

April 24, 2009

hbobillandsookie Maisy Fernandez from Film.com takes a look at the fascination behind vampires and how these creatures of the night have changed and adapted to the modern world and how they are represented in film and television. Presented before in its entirety is Ms. Fernandez’s assessment using Alan Ball’s hit HBO TV series True Blood and Stephenie Meyers’ Twilight.

Centuries-old legends about vampires largely paint them as super-scary killing machines that should be avoided at all costs. But thanks to a few modern novels, which have been adapted into hit television shows (True Blood) and movies (Twilight), vampires are quickly emerging as contemporary sex symbols. Garlic, wooden stakes and protective crosses are the last things on women’s minds when they’re around the likes of Bill Compton and Edward Cullen. Sure, today’s badass, bloodsucking, boy toys can kill someone on the spot — and even though you’ve got no chance of outrunning them, would you really want to? They are too intriguing to resist.

That’s why we are counting down the days until we get to see Bill Compton, the main vampire on True Blood, again, when season two of the show begins on June 14.
Part of what makes the modern-day vampire so tangible, if not lovable, is the way that legends and personas have been manipulated for the new millennium. Today’s vampires are old souls with modern problems and ideals — and we love the mixture.  So, we took a look at True Blood and Twilight in several categories, rating the right-now-ness of each on a scale of 1-10.

ASSIMILATION

The main vamps in each series, Bill Compton and Edward Cullen (Twilight), both make every attempt to live normal lives among humans without hurting them.  However, each have their crosses to bear. In True Blood, the townspeople are aware that vampires exist, but they are met with extreme prejudice. In Twilight, Edward must hide his true self from everyone but his vampire family and girlfriend, Bella. Can you say stressful?
True Blood: 8
Twilight: 7

EATING

While Bill’s hungry, he sips the synthetic drink, Tru Blood, so as not to feed on living creatures. A beverage invention like that seems so 2009. The Cullens, meanwhile, feed on animals in the forest instead of humans.
True Blood: 10
Twilight: 7

SLEEPING

Like most traditional vampires, Bill sleeps in a coffin during the daytime. Ho-hum. Edward, however, doesn’t require sleep. Ever. Can you imagine how much you could get done if you never got tired?
True Blood: 2
Twilight: 8

SEX

Twilight is geared toward young adults, and romance prevails over sex. Bella and Edward can scarcely make out before he pulls back to avoid his natural instinct to inhale her scent and then suck her blood. Frankly, it’s nice to see teenagers who aren’t having sex for once. The vamps on True Blood, meanwhile, have insatiable libidos. Their graphic, lighting-speed sexual activity can be a little jarring, but at least they can have sex with humans without becoming overwhelmed and killing them. Hey, if you’re going to live forever, there have to be some perks.
True Blood: 7
Twilight: 9

TRAVEL

You’d think an unemployed person — alive or undead — would A) take public transportation; B) drive a jalopy; or C) just walk everywhere. But Bill drives a black BMW, and Edward’s got a shiny, silver Volvo. Even vampires want nice wheels. Plus, they both have the power to move at lightning speed. Pretty convenient if there’s a traffic jam or something.
True Blood: 9
Twilight: 9

BITING

In most stories, including Twilight, being bitten (but not killed) by a vampire usually means that you’re doomed to the same immortal fate. But on True Blood, vampires can bite humans (during sex, for instance) and not change them. Likewise, humans can take hits of vampire blood to get high, but are still safe from transformation. Creative and interesting.
True Blood: 10
Twilight: 2

CLOTHING

You won’t see any cloaks with high collars here, like many vampires of olde. Bill’s usually wearing button-down shirts, jackets or long sleeved Henley tees with pants. Edward adopts the vibe of his Pacific Northwest home, opting for casual t-shirts and jeans to complement his messy, gelled-up hairdo. Fashionable? Meh. Inconspicuous? Totally.
True Blood: 8
Twilight: 7

GOING OUTSIDE

Bill’s intolerance to daylight means that his skin melts off in a gruesome fashion. Scary! But when Edward is in the sunlight, his skin sparkles like a million diamonds. Bling!
True Blood: 4
Twilight: 10

LOVE

Despite the fact that vampires aren’t human — something that Bill and Edward continually remind their partners about — both seem capable of true, unwavering, loyal feelings of love with their human girlfriends. Bill fell for telepathic, outspoken waitress Sookie Stackhouse, while Edward is smitten with Bella, a smart, cute high-school student who is sometimes insecure about their relationship. Despite the 100+ year age difference, both relationships seem built to last, probably because of the men’s old-school values. We don’t expect to see either couple on Divorce Court.
True Blood: 10
Twilight: 9

Charlaine Harris Interview on Dead and Gone

April 23, 2009

deadandgoneRecently Charlaine Harris spoke with Sandy from All About Romance to answers questions regarding her highly anticipated ninth book, entitled, “Dead and Gone” scheduled for release on May 5, 2009. With the return of season two of Alan Ball’s highly successful HBO TV series True Blood on June 14, 2009, Charlaine Harris answered a few questions regarding Sookie, Dead and Gone and on True Blood. There is a little bit of spoiler information here so if you don’t want to know don’t read any further.

The reporter asked the all to common question of “what can you tell us about Dead and Gone without spoiling it for us?” Ms. Harris in her charming way was able to provide an answer that leaves you wanting more.

“This book is full of shockers, I think, and it’s considerably darker than the other Sookie books. The Weres come out of the closet, and the war in the fae world spills out into the human world.”

An interesting question that Sandy from All About Romance asked was did Ms. Harris see Sookie’s final choice of “her very own supe” as the end of the story or could it continue on with Sookie and her chosen one going through challenges and adventures together?

Ms. Harris stated that she had not planned on continuing beyond Sookie making her final choice as to who she wants as a life partner but that it very well could happen. She mentioned she has read some great books where once the heroine or hero had made their commitment to their chosen one that the stories continued with the pair in whatever adventures that came their way. She said she is thinking about it, but we will have to wait and see if Ms. Harris does do it or not.

The reporter said that as a long time reader of the Sookie Stackhouse novels that she had already envisioned in her head what the characters looked like. However, this time around when she read Dead and Gone she could picture the cast of True Blood in their roles because she found them “incredibly well cast – honestly, I don’t see how they could have done a better job.” Then she proceeded to ask Ms. Harris if they also managed to creep into her head as she was writing. The reporter stated that in her own personal opinion “the story in Dead and Gone seemed…well, a bit inspired, if you know what I mean by a certain devastatingly sexy actor.”

Mrs. Harris stated that:

“Ha! I’ve met them, and I think they’re all devastatingly sexy. No, the plot line of Dead and Gone was established in my head before I saw all the episodes of the show. Sookie’s story makes a logical progression from the last book. As far as I can tell, my only reaction to the show is to give Sheriff Dearborn more to do, because I’ve been such a fan of William Sanderson for so long!”

The reporter mentioned that Ms. Harris must be quite pleased that her novels were chosen to be adapted onto television but touched on the fact that there has been much discussion online about how the series has veered away from the book and if she is ok with it and does she feel that the series has remained true to the characters and the themes?

“I feel totally cool, and I have succeeded in impressing my children and their friends, which is no small accomplishment. The storytelling in the show is different, which Alan had told me to expect. I think the series remains true to the theme of the books, and true to the spirit – that combination of humor, horror, and sex which characterizes the Sookie books.”

Sandy from All About Romance stated that if she was to have one complaint about the show is that it emphasizes on Jason too much which she states she has heard others mention as well. She then asked Ms. Harris if she knew if Jason was going to remain a prominent character in the series then he is in the books to which Ms. Harris stated she had no idea.

When asked if Ms. Harris could tell us what we might expect in season two of True Blood since it is rumored to follow the second book in the series, “Living Dead in Dallas,” Ms. Harris replied,

“I am less in the loop this year than I was last year. I really don’t know what’s going to happen, which is actually a lot of fun. That having been said, I do hope I get to see the first episodes a little before the rest of the world.”

To conclude the interview the reporter mentioned that in Dead and Gone Sookie‘s great-grandfather makes an ambiguous – and potentially very important – observation to Sookie at the end of the book. She then asked Ms. Harris if she would be willing to give readers a super small, maybe equally ambiguous clue as to what he meant?

Ms. Harris’ response. No. Sorry!
