Natasha Alam as True Blood's YvettaTrue Blood’s Natasha Alam (Yvetta) Hosts Parties.

Natasha Alam hosted a couple of parties  in Long Island, New York this past weekend.  Natasha plays Yvetta, a new dancer that works for Eric Northman at Fangtasia.

Not only is Natasha known for her character on True Blood, she  also was Playboy’s  Magazine cover model for this year’s past July’s cover.

Ms. Alam hosted a party at Crazy Donkey in Farmingdale on Friday night and at  Karma of Patchogue on Saturday night.   The Crazy Donkey gave out free drinks from 10:00  p.m. – 12:00 midnight in honor of Natasha. Video: Rutina Wesley of True Blood dishes on being 17

September 26, 2010

Video:  Rutina Wesley on being 17 and her funkadelic prom!

Most people look back at their senior prom as one of the highlights of their highschool experience.  On MTV‘s show ’17 Again’ actress Rutina Wesley (Tara) of True Blood talks about her experience going to prom her junior year with her good friend Adam. They chose to go all out 70’s and  Ms. Wesley clearly lived up to their chosen theme of the night.

“I had these green tights with fuchsia platforms, and afro puffs with bobby pins with pearls on the end and a zig zag part I thought I was real cute!”

She did in fact look very retro.  Ms. Wesley goes on to recount how unique her look was even then and her friends acknowledge that in a sea of tuxedos and formal dresses Ms. Wesley and her date Adam stood out.  The blast from the past didn’t end there as she recounts that they danced on the strip to ‘Stayin’ Alive’.  Clearly Ms. Wesley’s flare for unique looks began early and hopefully we’ll be seeing more of her fashion sense in Season 4 of True Blood.

How the True Blood Cast Perfect Their Southern Accents

September 25, 2010

Liz Himelstein, Dialect Coach Extraordinaire, Reveals the Secrets Behind the True Blood Accent

Stephen Moyer as Bill Compton, Anna Paquin as Sookie Stackhouse on HBO red carpetTrue Blood cast members hail from places all around the world, not that you can tell from their perfect Southern accents thanks to Liz Himelstein their dialect coach.

Recently, Himelstein, who has 20 years experience in film and theater under her belt, opened up to CNN about how the cast manages to sound perfectly at home in Bon Temps.

In the interview, Himelstein revealed she had Stephen Moyer, True Blood’s Bill,  listen to propriety recordings of older men from the South to help him develop the antiquated Southern drawl women have fallen in love with.

Anna Paquin, who plays Sookie, listened to poetry from the South. According to Himelstein, Paquin and Moyer took to their accents for the show quickly.

For the show’s pilot, Himelstein was impressed with the cast, who she says had fun working on their accents together.

The secret to how the cast manages to keep their accents going? Alan Ball, creator of the show, who was born in Georgia. Ball writes in Southern dialect, which helps give the cast an idea of how they should sound. According to Himelstein, reading Ball’s writing is like reading a piece of music, if you follow his rhythm, you won’t get lost.

Grant Bowler Describes Life Before True Blood

September 25, 2010

Grant Bowler Talks About His Life, Struggles and Family

Grant Bowler, True Blood, CootIn Season 3 of HBO‘s True Blood, we were introduced to several new characters, both good and bad.  One of the bad characters was Coot, a vampire blood-addicted werewolf played by Grant Bowler, who was involved in kidnapping Bill Compton.  Bowler talked with the Herald Sun in Australia about his childhood, his struggles to break into Hollywood and his life after True Blood.

Growing Up

Bowler’s mother was a single mom who took on various jobs to support her children.  When he was two years old they moved from New Zealand to Australia so his mother could pursue new work opportunities.  Life for his family was stressful until his mother found a career in finance and married John Bowler.  Although John Bowler was not Grant’s biological father, their bond was cemented and they are very close. Growing up Bowler felt like an outsider being neither an Aussie or a Kiwi and not coming from a “typical” family.  Being an outsider and observing everything around him shaped who he is today.

Discovering Acting

Bowler did not catch the acting bug until he was 19 years old.  Working as a copywriter, he wrote an advertisement with an actor that he had seen on television but when they showed up to film the commercial, the actor who was scheduled to appear didn’t show.  His friend suggested that Bowler do the acting and he caught the bug.  He moved to Sydney at the age of 20 and was accepted into the National Institute of Dramatic Art which prepares people for careers in theater, film and television.  He met his wife Roxanne Wilson on the set of a movie in 1999 but the two did not become involved until a few years later.

Breaking into Hollywood

After working 12 years in Australian television doing shows like ‘Blue Heelers’, ‘All Saints’ and ‘Border Security’, Bowler felt it was time he made the change and moved to Los Angeles.  He arrived in Los Angeles in 2003 and a few weeks later they discovered his wife of 18 months was expecting their first child.  Finding work was proving to be extremely difficult and the family suffered a huge financial setback.  They lost their home, were $60,000 in debt and had no jobs.  The couple supported each other and continued to work hard at breaking into Hollywood while family members kept telling them to come home.  They would go broke, return to Australia to earn enough money to go right back to Los Angeles.  Bowler returned to LA alone in 2006 and slept at a friend’s house.  He then got his first big break landing a role in the HBO series ’12 Miles of Bad Road’ with Lily Tomlin.  Unfortunately due to the writers strike his episodes never made the air but from there his career started to take off.  Bowler went on to work on ‘Ugly Betty’, ‘Lost’ and then to True Blood.  His role on True Blood has led him to film roles as well.

Life Today

Bowler’s family lives in Sydney and he travels back and forth for work.  They keep in touch via Skype and while the separation is hard, they don’t want their children moving around that often.  Bowler says that he would prefer that his kids not go into acting, joking that he doesn’t want the competition. He says:

“I don’t want the competition. They’re much cuter than I am and I don’t want them cutting my grass.”

Stephen Moyer Describes True Blood Nudity as Part of the Job

September 24, 2010

Stephen Moyer on Nudity

Stephen Moyer portraying Bill ComptonStephen Moyer was interviewed by about his work as Bill Compton on True Blood. He discussed several things, including dating and then marrying costar Anna Paquin, sex scenes on True Blood, and an unfortunate comment he made about Robert Pattinson that was picked up by media sources that spread around like wildfire.

Stephen said that he and Anna kept their relationship secret for a long time to prevent the drama that could have occurred if they had broken up and decided they hated each other. Thankfully, of course, that didn’t happen and the couple is happily married now.

Of course, marriage is something that Stephen didn’t step into lightly. First, he talked to a friend of his who made Anna’s engagement ring for him. Then, in a simple set up, Stephen proposed. He says he proposed for several reasons:

It got to the point where you are calling somebody that you intend to stay with for the rest of your life your ‘girlfriend’. That’s what I’ve called everybody I’ve ever been with – and that’s not to say that those relationships weren’t important, because they were, I’ve got two amazing kids. But it felt ridiculous to call the person that you really are going to spend the rest of your life with your ‘girlfriend’. I felt she should have a title so I could joke and say ‘the missus’, make lots of wife gags.

It probably also makes working simpler when an actor is doing sex scenes with someone they really know. Stephen says that nudity is just “part and parcel” of his job and it’s really not as glamorous as it appears to be on True Blood. In order to look their best for sex scenes, the cast of True Blood works out and they don’t eat before a scene is shot. For Stephen, if a sex scene is shot after lunch, it’s a nightmare because all he thinks about after filming a sex scene is food.

And not all sex scenes are made the same. Some of the scenes do have the cast and crew talking to each other before they’re ever filmed. Keeping up the conversation reminds everyone that sex scenes are a job, not real life. One example is a scene between Bill and Sookie from the third season that is very provocative and had people questioning whether or not the scene was consensual. Stephen talked with his fellow cast and crew-mates to make sure that everyone knew what was going on.

Stephen also commented on paparazzi and an unfortunate comment he made about Robert Pattinson. The comment referred to Pattinson’s character Edward Cullen and called him “the diet coke of vampires” among other things. Stephen said that he was asked this one day while he was trying to go somewhere with his daughter and a paparazzi wouldn’t leave him alone, so he made the comment off the cuff. He continued, saying that he’s never seen Twilight and only knows a few things about it.

Paparazzi can be annoying, but Stephen takes them all in stride. He’s grateful that anyone even cares enough about him to want to take pictures of him doing menial tasks. After all, Stephen also claims to have the best job in the world, so he’ll take the attention happily.
