True Blood’s Rutina Wesley On Tara’s Future

October 14, 2011

Will Tara Make It To Season 5?

Rutina Wesley HBO promo season 4Season 4 of True Blood certainly ended with a bang, and if anyone knows about that it’s Tara Thornton. Of all the drama she has gone through on the show, being shot in the head is certainly the worst thing that has happened to her yet. In an interview with W Magazine, Rutina Wesley reveals that not even she knows if Tara will survive. She spoke of Tara’s future saying:

“What’s happening to my character? Am I alive or am I dead? So it’s a very scary place to be in, but it’s awesome.”

Wesley reminisces about some of her more interesting times on the show and how that compares to what she’s currently doing. Wesley is currently starring in a play at the Lucille Lortel Theatre in New York called, “The Submission.” In the dramatic play, Wesley stars as an actress hired by a playwright to take the credit for his latest, controversial play.

In the play Wesley has a few very intense scenes, though they are nothing like what she went through on True Blood. She compared the experiences, stating:

“They’re both hard in their own ways. I think they’re both degrading, but I think in a play like this, seven shows a week, it’s a lot harder. Because I’m doing it every day. Whereas that was just a day’s worth of shooting. We may do more than one take, but once it’s done, it’s done, it’s in the can. But I have to go through this every night.”

You can read the full story here. If you’re in the area be sure to check out the play and let us know what you think!

True Blood = Real Life?

October 14, 2011

A Doctor Compares the Microcosmic Bon Temps to the Macrocosm of Reality:

True Blood Season 4 poster redA newbie’s interpretation of True Blood and the psychology of “why we like it” appears on Psychology Today’s “Look Around and Look Within” blog written by Dr. Susan L. Smalley.  Recently enthralled with the show, like a V-addict she watched all four seasons in one week.

The points that Smalley expands on are how 1. Sookie Stackhouse is a transparent, self-aware character; 2. “the world is not always as it seems;” 3. Equality of all beings, as a theme, plays a major role; 4. “religion can fuel intolerance;” 5. the characters of True Blood are constantly questioning who they are and subsequently altering themselves for the better (or worse) and 6. the mundane is supernatural.

Smalley’s article touches on why the majority of Truebies love the show: the fictional life presented is an indubitable metaphor for Reality.  The problems of Bon Temps, albeit fantastical, are a mirror of true life; the ancient axiom of Life imitating Art (and vice versa) is empirically extolled by audiences.

Alan Ball Talks Aussies and Religion with Sydney Morning Herald

October 13, 2011

On Working with Aussies:

Alan Ball HBO promo S4Alan Ball is the creative person behind HBO’s hit series, True Blood, as well as Six Feet Under. While he appears to be very good at this, he is also great at hiring Aussie actors, namely Ryan Kwanten (Jason Stackhouse), Rachel Griffith (Six Feet Under) and Toni Collette (Towelhead). The Sydney Morning Herald asked Ball why he is so fond of Aussie actors, and why he chose Ryan Kwanten to fulfill the role of Jason Stackhouse:

“You guys create some really fantastic actors. It’s just the talent… I went to see this movie called Flicka, a family movie about a brother and sister and a horse, and he was the handsome, charming, not-so-intellectually developed brother. He was Jason. I called my casting director that day.”

While Alan Ball is known for his dark and quirky shows, it is possible that early childhood tragedy may have helped shape this. When Ball was 13, his sister was killed in a car accident. His family, as a result turned to religion. As Ball grew older, his religious path turned away from the family’s beliefs and towards Buddhism:

“Life is suffering. We have desires and expectations and egos and we compare the reality we have, which is miraculous and wondrous, with this reality we desire. That somehow distances us from actually taking part fully with the reality we do have and that creates suffering.”

Make sure you check out the full article here.

Truebies, do you like the choices Mr. Ball has made in the past? Besides True Blood, obviously, are you a fan of his work? Share your thoughts in the comment section below.

True Blood’s Jason Stackhouse Knows What Women Want

October 12, 2011

Ryan Kwanten Dishes on His Sex Symbol Status:

Sex Symbol Ryan KwantenSexy 34-year old Aussie actor Ryan Kwanten opened up to Men’s Health Magazine about how playing the dim-witted but adorable Jason Stackhouse on True Blood has heightened his status as a sex symbol. Kwanten believes it’s Jason’s confidence that draws women to him and allows them to look past his shortcomings. Kwanten stated:

“With all the guys on the show there’s a rawness to them. With Jason it’s very unabashed. He’s very comfortable in his skin. I think from a female perspective, that kind of audacity or confidence can be sexy… Although I don’t think that a guy like that could be sexy all the time. It is a little too full on… but then again, I’m not a girl.”

As a girl, I can safely say that Jason’s confidence is not the only thing that makes him sexy.

Kwanten also expresses his amazement at the show’s great success and how it has helped his career. You can read the full interview in the November issue of Men’s Health Magazine, on newsstands now.

Video: Janina Gavankar’s Wish for True Blood Season 5

October 10, 2011

Gavankar Interviewed at the 2011 Emmys:

Janina Gavankar HBO promo S4The lovely and seemingly fearless actress who plays shifter Luna Garza on HBO’s True Blood, Janina Gavankar, was interviewed by PopSugarTV at the 2011 Emmys. She admitted that before getting cast, she was not a Truebie! The horror! However, it wasn’t because she didn’t like the show — she simply had never watched it. After getting cast, she promptly devoured seasons 1-3, and obviously fell in love. Who hasn’t?

She explained what it was like to work with such a young co-star (Chloe Noelle, who plays Luna’s daughter, Emma), saying that it was both a pleasure and interesting to see how the little one learned her lines, as she was just learning to read.

So, what does Gavankar want to see during Season 5 of True Blood? Some ass-kicking, naturally. She explains quite candidly:

“I want to see the shifters kick some ass. Come on! You know, I think that Sam has a nice girl that’s going to stand by him, I want to see them join together and show people what shifters are made of.” (As she turns to the camera with a saucy look.)

Actor/comedian Chris Rock walked up during the interview to introduce himself and say he’s a fan of True Blood, which Gavankar says was the highlight of her night. Check out the full interview below:

Video: True Blood’s Alexander Skarsgård Talks Melancholia

October 8, 2011

Skarsgård and Kiefer Sutherland Speak on Sci-Fi Picture:

Alexander Skarsgård as Eric NorthmanAlexander Skarsgård is taking a break from playing vampire Eric Northman on HBO’s True Blood to act in a few major motion picture films. With Straw Dogs already in theaters, Skarsgård’s next film is Melancholia, which is about two sisters who have a strained relationship that is tested even further when a mysterious new planet threatens to smash into the Earth.

On doing new work, Skarsgård said:

“If I read a script and find a character and I don’t feel anything new about that- If there’s nothing I can learn or discover about myself I won’t get creative… If you’ve done it before, it’s not fun. To me at least.”

Skarsgård’s father has worked with Melancholia director Lars von Trier six times. Skarsgård couldn’t resist a chance to work with von Trier.

On shooting Melancholia, Skarsgård said:

“Like, even if it’s a complicated scene with cars coming in, people going in and out… and we would shoot it and 98% would be a disaster… There would be these moments or just a look or an interaction that is so brilliant.”

The sci-fi drama also stars Kirsten Dunst, Kiefer Sutherland, and John Hurt.
