True Blood Composer Represents at WonderCon

March 31, 2012

Nathan Barr Attends 3rd Annual “Behind The Music” Panel:

One of the most impressive things about True Blood is the music. Not only the various songs borrowed from other artists, but the original compositions as well. Who doesn’t remember the beautiful Sookie and Bill theme?

Nathan Barr has traveled the world and studied music extensively from a very young age. This definitely comes out through his compositions. True Blood has had some truly unique music over its four seasons. During the panel at this year’s WonderCon, Barr and many other Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Action/Animated television series composers discussed with fans the ways in which they evolve and elevate music composition to new heights.

Also in attendance at the panel was Ellen Greene, star of ABC’s “Pushing Daisies” and Warner Brothers’ “Little Shop Of Horrors,” Jim Dooley (FX’s “Wilfred”), Robert Duncan (ABC’s “Castle”), Mark Isham (ABC’s “Once Upon a Time”), Danny Jacob (Disney Channel’s “Phineas and Ferb”), David Ari Leon (Disney XD and Marvel Entertainment’s “The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes”), and Blake Neely (CBS’ “The Mentalist.”).

Book Description

Publication Date: August 5, 2010
Lilah Belle has always been a trifle odd to folks in her tiny town of Lucasville; a “singer who didn’t sing no more,” Lilah is prone to dancing in the streets, dressing outlandishly and weaving fantastic stories. But when her beloved brother dies suddenly, Lilah’s grief sends her into a topsy turvy tailspin. Desperate to escape her painful new reality, she hits the road with the unlikeliest of travelling companions: Rose Johnson, a newcomer whose scandalous behavior in the small, sleepy town has branded her a scarlet woman. Anxious to escape their bleak realities, the women strike out in a stolen vintage pickup truck, barreling toward a fated encounter with the mythical, magical Lazarus of the Butterflies. Legend has it that Lazarus can “heal you and make your dreams come true.” The adventure that unfolds will transform their destinies, binding Lilah and Rose together forever. Richly evocative, Butterfly Rising is a timeless tale of friendship and courage, etched with pain and joy.

The story of these two women really captured my heart as I read about how their friendship changed one another’s lives.

I loved the friendship that was created by Lilah and Rose, two unexpected characters who were complete opposites, but had more in common as they discovered during their journey from Lucasville to Newhope to beyond.

True Blood Season 5: Death, Lube, and Drinks

March 26, 2012

What a Normal Day on the Set of True Blood is Like:

Wall of True DeathSo we know that HBO’s True Blood isn’t your normal, average, everyday kind of show. If it were, True Blood definitely wouldn’t be the phenomenon it is today.  The production office has a Wall of True Death so they can keep track of those Bon Temps residents that are among the dearly departed.

Set costumers design quite the fantasy-oriented clothing for True Blood cast members — this includes lubing up Pam de Beaufort’s latex outfit.

Latex and Lubricant

Do you ever think about how the prop department keeps track of all the drinks being served at Fangtasia and Merlotte’s? Well now we know the process doesn’t look all that sophisticated! Seeing these pictures reminds me that we are that much closer to Season 5!

Alexander Skarsgård Takes a Break From Filming True Blood to Appear at WonderCon 2012

March 21, 2012

After a Night of Portraying Eric Northman, Skarsgård Promotes Upcoming Film:

First, a little background. WonderCon is a comics and Alexander Skarsgård at WonderCon 2012media convention produced by the same group who brings us the San Diego Comic-Con. While much smaller in attendance (by several thousand) than its big sister, WonderCon does not fall short in quality programming.

I attended WonderCon on Saturday, March 17. It was held at the Anaheim Convention Center, not far from Disneyland. A primary, although not singular, motivation was to see the panel promoting the upcoming film ‘Battleship’. Panelist Alexander Skarsgård, who portrays Viking vampire Eric Northman on HBO’s series True Blood, plays Stone Hopper in ‘Battleship’. This is my first-hand account from dead-center in the room and reflects my perceptions, observations and opinions.

Living just outside of Los Angeles, I have been privileged to see Mr. Skarsgård in person four times, including WonderCon. I have previously attended the True Blood panels at both Comic-Cons in which he appeared, as well as PaleyFest in 2011.  He is typically very engaging and witty, answering questions openly and teasing fellow panel members.

When Mr. Skarsgård was introduced and entered the stage, a large group of 6-8 women seated around me gave a collective gasp. They all watch True Blood but apparently were unaware either that Mr. Skarsgård was in ‘Battleship’ or that he was scheduled to appear that day. The group began to giggle and squeal, shifting in their seats, several of them saying – in loud voices – “It’s Eric Northman!”

Mr. Skarsgård typically wears a suit to panel appearances, but this day he was dressed more casually in jeans, gray Converse tennis shoes, a gray t-shirt and dark jacket. It could have been a concession to exhaustion (due to a late night filming of True Blood) or to the unusually heavy rain storm we experienced. Rounding out the panel was Director Peter Berg (Friday Night Lights, The Kingdom) and co-star, Brooklyn Decker (Just Go With It).

The first video clip shown was an actual sequence from the film. It featured Ms. Decker, Mr. Skarsgård and Taylor Kitsch (Friday Night Lights, John Carter). Mr. Kitsch plays Alex Hopper, brother to Mr. Skarsgård’s character (who did not attend the panel). Mr. Skarsgård’s performance in the clip ranges from funny, to brotherly, to annoyed, to resigned and culminates in horrified surprise. It was entertaining and a pleasure to watch.

Skarsgård Found Working on “Battleship” to Be “scary”:

Skarsgård in BattleshipWhen the panel moderator asked Mr. Skarsgård what it was like working on such a large and complex production, he answered: “Scary”. He then explained that in a particular scene, a window is blown out and the glass and debris strike him. The shot was accomplished with a large air gun that Mr. Skarsgård said resembled a World War II cannon. The blast had been strong enough that his reaction was genuine; no acting had been required.

Peter Berg, who directed the film, paid Mr. Skarsgård a compliment. He said that when casting, he seeks out smart and complicated actors, which he considers Mr. Skarsgård to be.

Two more clips were shown of the film before the panel was concluded. On the whole, the movie appears to be a traditional summer action flick that could prove to be highly entertaining. In addition to the cast already mentioned, it also stars Liam Neeson (Clash of the Titans, Schindler’s List) and singer Rhianna in her acting debut. Mr. Skarsgård’s role seems to be sizable and significant and makes me wonder if this won’t be what catapults him from genre popularity to outright stardom within the U.S.

Battleship releases overseas in April and hits theaters in the U.S. May 18th.

Video: Carrie Preston’s True Blood Season 5 Predictions

March 21, 2012

Is Arlene’s Family In Danger?

Carrie Preston, True Blood’s ArleneAccording to True Blood actress Carrie Preston, season 5 of the show will be the one to watch. As always, one of the best things about any new season is the host of new characters that come with it. Chris Meloni (Law and Order: SVU), and Scott Foley (Felicity), will be joining the cast this season. Meloni stars as an ancient and very powerful new vamp, and Foley joins as Patrick Devans, a war veteran carrying dangerous baggage.

Preston was quick to note that Foley will be causing more than a few problems for Arlene and Terry. It isn’t yet clear at this point exactly what way Foley will threaten Arlene’s happy marriage, but the actress had this to say during an interview at the Sundance Film Festival:

“Arlene wants to hold onto her man and her family and that’s always going to be her MO. Anything that comes into her situation and is threatening, she’s not going to take that lying down.”

So what are your predictions for what these two guys will get up to during Season 5 of True Blood? Let us know in the comments!

Video: Trailer For Carrie Preston’s “That’s What She Said”

March 17, 2012

Carrie Preston Directs Feature-Length Independent Film:

Carrie Preston - Director, That's What She SaidActress Carrie Preston portrays waitress Arlene Fowler on HBO’s True Blood. She recently went behind the camera to direct, ‘That’s What She Said’. Ms. Preston’s production company, Daisy3Pictures, produced the film that was shown at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival.

The trailer for ‘That’s What She Said’ would lead you to think the movie is about a woman getting support from her friends after her date stands her up. Really, it’s about BeBe, seeking support from her cynical best-friend Dee Dee, the day of the most romantic date of her life. They find themselves inexplicably joined by Clementine, a stranger-turned-friend, who has just endured a break-up and can’t stop discussing a certain part of her anatomy. Ms. Preston explains:

“As the day goes on, the friendship gets more honest, more crude, and it introduces one of life’s greatest riddles; why does everything always have to be so hard?”

‘That’s What She Said’ is based on the play, ‘Girl Talk’. The play was written by a friend of Ms. Preston, Kelly Overbey (Unforgettable, The Good Wife), who also appears in the film. Ms. Preston directed the play eight years ago and always dreamt of one day helming the film. The cast also includes Anne Heche (Hung), who plays cynical best-friend Dee Dee; Marcia DeBonis (Curb Your Enthusiasm) reprises her lead role in ‘Girl Talk’, BeBe; and Alia Shawkat (Arrested Development) rounds out the cast as self-professed nymphomaniac, Clementine. Ms. Preston describes the film as:

“It’s a look at how friendship can survive chronic sarcasm, bizarre stranger danger, an unexplained itch, and a dangerous dildo.”

Ms. Preston’s film, ‘That’s What She Said’, has been accepted for screening by several film festivals, some or all of which, Ms. Preston will be attending.
