April 11, 2012

Announcing the Official Cookbook for HBO’s Hit Vampire Drama:

Truebies and talented cooks rejoice! The official True Blood cookbook will be available to ship on August 29! While the specifics of the book remain as scarce as a vampire in daylight, it has been revealed that the 85 recipes included are centered around authentic Southern comfort food. Maybe there’ll be one called “Ya’ll Gon’ Wish You Ain’t Ate That Corn Bread.” Oh, and another called “Gran’s Pie.” The possibilities are almost as endless as a vampire’s life span. Stick around, folks, I got a million of ’em.

The book also contains 150 full page photos from the show to “give fans a big taste of Bon Temps.” The book is written by Gianna Sobol, an associate producer on the show, and the one and only Mr. Alan Ball. The recipes are by the self-proclaimed Queen of Cajun Cooking Marcelle Bienvenu.

You can pre-order a copy at the HBO Store website. It ships August 29th, just in time for the season 5 finale!

Movie Description

Publication Date: August 5, 2010
Lilah Belle has always been a trifle odd to folks in her tiny town of Lucasville; a “singer who didn’t sing no more,” Lilah is prone to dancing in the streets, dressing outlandishly and weaving fantastic stories. But when her beloved brother dies suddenly, Lilah’s grief sends her into a topsy turvy tailspin. Desperate to escape her painful new reality, she hits the road with the unlikeliest of travelling companions: Rose Johnson, a newcomer whose scandalous behavior in the small, sleepy town has branded her a scarlet woman. Anxious to escape their bleak realities, the women strike out in a stolen vintage pickup truck, barreling toward a fated encounter with the mythical, magical Lazarus of the Butterflies. Legend has it that Lazarus can “heal you and make your dreams come true.” The adventure that unfolds will transform their destinies, binding Lilah and Rose together forever. Richly evocative, Butterfly Rising is a timeless tale of friendship and courage, etched with pain and joy.

Spoiler! Season 5 True Blood Premiere Song Speculation!

April 7, 2012

HBO True Blood vampire Steve Newlin-former Church of the Sun leader, played by Michael McMillan, in Season 5 Premiere

True Blood Season 5 Premiere

We recently revealed, here at TrueBloodNet.com, the title of the first episode of season five of HBO‘s hit series, True Blood. Warning! Spoiler Alert! If you don’t want to be spoiled you should not read further as the title often reveals important episode themes. Long-time viewers know, the title of the episode often ties in with the final song that plays during the closing credits of each episode of True Blood. Radio DJ Gary Calamar is responsible for picking these often-surprising tunes that play in the final credits. Mr. Calamar is the music supervisor on True Blood picking the songs to accompany not only the final credits but also tunes heard during the show whenever the talented Nathan Barr isn’t creating original scores for our favorite series. According to this piece we presented last year:

Every episode of True Blood is named after a song. According to Gary, this is difficult due to budget concerns. Some licensing can be too expensive or just not available. In a few cases, the episode titles were changed because the song didn’t work out as planned. But, as music supervisor, this touch makes his job more fun and interesting.

Turn! Turn! Turn!

The name of the season 5 premiere episode of True Blood is “Turn! Turn! Turn!” While the most obvious implication is that dead/or dying Tara Thornton, who’s brains were splattered across Sookie Stackhouse‘s kitchen at the end of Season 4, will be turned into a vampire, Alan Ball and his devious writers could be throwing us all off track with the premiere’s title. Perhaps Ball and the writers are throwing us a curve ball by merely refering to the recent turning of Steve Newlin former head of the ‘Church of the Sun“, Bon Temps anti-vampire religious extremists, into the vampire that showed up at Sookie‘s door last season with the foreshadowing title. Maybe they are hinting at various characters turning over a new leaf this season. They can but assume that the title of the episodes would be known before the premiere show’s airing on June 10th, 2012 and they could be evilly twisting the obvious meaning.

Nevertheless, we thought we would speculate on not only which song is going to play at the end of the first season five episode but also which band’s cover of the piece will be selected.

The Byrds

The most famous version of this song was done by The Byrds in 1965 where it reached number on on Billboard’s Hot 100. However, The Byrds didn’t write “Turn! Turn! Turn! (to Everything There Is a Season)” to give the song it’s full title. That honor belongs to Pete Seeger who wrote the song in 1959 and recorded it on his album, “The Bitter and the Sweet” in 1962.

Seeger repurposed the words from the King James Bible version of the Book of Ecclesiastes, using the words almost verbatim, with a bit of rearranging and the addition of exactly six words of his own. Besides Seeger and The Byrds, “Turn! Turn! Turn!” was also recorded by Judy Collins in 1963 on her “Judy Collins 3” album, The Seekers in 1966 on their “Georgy Girl”; Wilson Philips in 2004 on their “California” album. Other prominent musicians who’ve recorded this title are Bruce Springsteen in 2006 and most recently by Tori Amos in 2010.

So whose version of this song do you think we’ll hear on June 10th during the season 5 premiere of True Blood? Do you like one better than the other? Do you have a sentimental favorite? Or do you know of a more obscure version of the song that you think is better suited to the dark and twisted story lines of True Blood? Be sure to take your guess in the comments section below!

The Lyrics

Turn, Turn, Turn by Pete Seeger and sung by The Byrds

To everything, turn, turn, turn
There is a season, turn, turn, turn
And a time for every purpose under heaven

A time to be born, a time to die
A time to plant, a time to reap
A time to kill, a time to heal
A time to laugh, a time to weep

A time to build up, a time to break down
A time to dance, a time to mourn
A time to cast away stones
A time to gather stones together

A time of love, a time of hate
A time of war, a time of peace
A time you may embrace
A time to refrain from embracing

A time to gain, a time to lose
A time to rend, a time to sew
A time of love, a time of hate
A time of peace, I swear it’s not too late

Denis O’Hare Juggles True Blood Season 5, and ‘An Iliad’

April 6, 2012

Denis O’Hare adapts Homer’s Iliad for the New York stage:

Stephen Spinella and Denis O'Hare (photo by Joan Marcus)Denis O’Hare, who plays the Vampire King of Mississippi Russell Edgington in HBO’s series True Blood, has recently adapted Homer’s epic poem, ‘The Iliad’, for the New York stage. Collaborating with friend, Lisa Peterson who also directs, O’Hare wrote, and plays the leading role in this one-man play, ‘An Iliad’. Stephen Spinella (Angels in America) alternates performances with O’Hare.

In the early days of the Iraq War, Peterson approached O’Hare about adapting the story of the Trojan War as a platform for performance. They worked on the project periodically over the course of five years until they had a script. When asked how the work was condensed to create the script, O’Hare answered:

“We decided the most basic structure is Achilles meets Hector, the symbols of Greece and Troy respectively. We focused our stories around that central conflict with everything else radiating outward.”

O’Hare addressed the differences in acting for both stage and screen. He explained that each has benefits and drawbacks. “Actors must understand the medium in which they are working so they can adjust their performances accordingly.”

True Blood update

When the subject of True Blood came up, O’Hare said that he would be returning to the HBO series during the run of ‘An Iliad’. He explained that he is scheduled to film briefly in mid-March:

“Then I’m back in L.A. at the end of March to shoot some more. I’ve read about six scripts. They’ve got some very nice stuff planned.”

‘An Iliad’ officially opened March 6 with O’Hare and March 7 with Spinella at New York Theatre Workshop, 79 East 4 St., NYC. 212-460-5475.

Video: Joe Manganiello on True Blood Season 5 and Love Life

April 6, 2012

Manganiello Talks Alcide and his Search for Love:

Joe Manganiello at Duracell event 2012 (credit Hollywood.com)To make the steadily approaching premiere of True Blood‘s fifth season even more exciting, Joe Manganiello dishes on what a large part Alcide Herveaux will play in the first six episodes. Gushing about a large character expansion, he says he’s worked more on Season 5 than he has in any of the prior seasons, stating that:

“The writers have given me some amazing stuff to play around with.”

Manganiello also mentions that Alcide’s actions will go much further than the character portrayal of Alcide in Charlaine Harris’s Sookie Stackhouse novels, both when it comes to action, and romance.

As for his personal life, this werewolf stud is on the prowl! After a devastating split from his fiancée Audra Marie in September 2011, the 35-year-old remains hopeful. Referring to the dating scene as “fun” and “exciting,” he’s enjoying taking his time, however, he’s ready to settle down should the “right situation” come along. He says he does want to be married with kids someday, but he’s waiting for the right woman. We wish him the best of luck finding the lucky girl!

Spoiler! True Blood Season 5 Episode 1 Title, Cast and Crew!

April 6, 2012

HBO's True Blood's Sookie Stackhouse, played by Anna Paquin, in the shower from season 5True Blood Season 5 Episode 1

The title and list of the cast and crew of the first (season premiere) episode of season five, episode 49, of HBO‘s award winning show True Blood, which is scheduled to air June 10, 2012 follows. True Blood was created by Alan Ball and is based on the Sookie Stackhouse novels written by Charlaine Harris. WARNING! SPOILER ALERT! Do Not Read If You Don’t Want to be Spoiled! Although there are no plot or script details included here you can still make some inferences that could be misleading OR could spoil you. Fair warning! If you’re still interested, read on below the picture of Sam!

Turn! Turn! Turn!

That’s the title of the first episode of season 5 of True Blood; Turn! Turn! Turn!  Of course the first question that this title brings to mind is: Will Tara Thornton be turned? There seems little question that she’s dead, it’s hard to put Humpty Dumpty back together again when her brains are splattered all over Gran’s walls and floor. Will she beome the thing she hated the most? If she is turned, who will do the deed? Bill and Eric are just across the cemetery, barely a vampire sneeze away. But there are at least three other regular series vampires who might be nearby. Jessica isn’t far off and might come visiting Sookie. Where is Pam? Could she be near by? Of course, most interesting of all those possibilities would be the reappearance of Russell Edgington. Russell as Tara’s maker is a very twisted and Alan Ball-like occurence. Or Tara could become a brain-eating zombie; she certainly needs to get a brain from somewhere!

There’s no reason to believe that Tara is the only one that could be turned either. Who else could be turned? How about Jason? Perhaps Hoyt goes after him and to save Jason Jess turns him. What about Mrs. Fortenberry? Talk about the fun factor! Wow! Who else could be turned this season? Post your ideas in the comments section.
