Alexander Skarsgard to Star in “The Elephant”

June 28, 2010 by

Alexander Skarsgard has signed on to star in “The Elephant“, an oil-rig thriller from director Hans Petter Moland.  Skarsgard is set to play a Norweigan roustabout who tangles with a redneck American driller. The two bond while attempting to shut down an oil rig explosion. Moland’s last film “A Somewhat Gentle Man” stared Alex‘s father Stellan Skarsgard and won an Audience Award at the Berlin International Film Festival.

While it may seem like the movie is being made in response to current events, it was actually inspired by Magnar Jonsgaard’s novel “Black Rain” which is about American’s drilling for oil in the North Sea where Jonsgaard worked during the 1970’s. Moland described the film as “Norway’s rags-to-riches story that changed an entire society and revealed the abuse of huge wealth and its impact on individual lives.”

The film’s title comes from a slang term used to describe an oil field that produces at least 500 million barrels. Casting is currently underway for the three American stars and filming is set to begin in late autumn or early 2011.

Skarsgard will be seen next in “Straw Dogs” and “13” and has also signed on for Lars von Trier’s “Melancholia” and Peter Berg’s “Battleship“.
