True Blood Composer Nathan Barr is Spotlighted by Carson Daly

Last Call with Carson Daly Spotlights True Blood Composer Nathan Barr

On Carson Daly’s October 16 show, he put the spotlight on Nathan Barr, a highly talented composer who is best known for his scores for seasons 1-3 of True Blood. Carson visited Nathan’s home and private recording studio to learn more about the man behind the music.

Nathan is a man of many talents. Not only does he compose, but he also performs his own compositions. He told Carson that he works hard to keep things as organic as possible while composing, and also tries to keep everything the audience hears real rather than synthesizing sounds. In making music his way, Nathan has become a popular choice as a composer for horror films. He has worked closely with directors like Eli Roth and Kevin Kever, and most recently scored the movie The Last Exorcism.

Nathan’s Personal Recording Studio

Unlike many other recording artists, Nathan has his own studio right at his house. On most days, all he has to do is walk from his house to his garage, which was converted into his studio. He often “sits down with a cup of coffee and starts working.”

This studio is where Nathan has composed all of the original music for True Blood. He began his work for the show by creating Bill and Sookie’s love theme, which came out of Nathan sitting down with a guitar and playing chords. From there, he doubled the guitar line and played it on his cello. After creating Bill and Sookie’s theme, Nathan had the confidence to create the themes for other characters on True Blood.

Nathan showed Carson how he created the sound for a scene from Season 3 of True Blood when Bill’s invitation to Jason’s house is rescinded. He explained that because vampires have to leave houses as soon as they are uninvited, and they are sucked out of the house backwards, he played a bagpipe, a piano, and a bell, then reversed the sound for each of the instruments to create an entirely new sound to fit what we saw onscreen.

There was a lot more shared in the video Carson showed his audience, and it really gives fans a peek into the process of how Nathan creates the music that we all know and love on True Blood. Check out the video and enjoy!

Deborah Ann Woll’s Boyfriend Runs for Awareness

October 18, 2010

Deborah Ann Woll’s Boyfriend E.J. Scott ran in the Chicago Marathon on Oct. 11th, 2010.

EJ Scott Running Chicago MarathonDeborah Ann Woll‘s boyfriend E.J. Scott suffers from Choroideremia. A degenerative, hereditary eye disease, it attacks peripherally and erodes it until total blindness occurs.  Scott ran in the Chicago Marathon on October 11, 2010 to bring awareness to Choroideremia.  He completed this task by running the Marathon with a blindfold and a guide.

Scott said he, “trained 10 months on a treadmill so he would be ready to run the marathon”.  He wore the blindfold because the exposure to the sun while he ran the 26.2 mile race would cause further damage to his sight.

Choroideremia is mostly found in males, and affects an estimated one in 50,000 people.  Scott is not the only one in his family that has been affected by this disease.  His younger brother Kevin, and his nephew Liam also have been diagnosed with it.  Scott’s grandfather went blind at the age of 40.  He says this disease, “really has shook the foundation of his family”.

Scott who is a Improv Comedian, was pursuing an acting career in LA when his eyesight started deteriorating.  This prompted him to move in 2008 to Chicago, the city Deborah Ann Woll still lives in.  Deborah is very supportive of E. J’s. quest to help and raise awareness for CHM.

Scott said, “his diminished vision is like looking through two paper towel rolls”.  To get around he uses a cane and he wears glasses.  The theatre where E.J. performs also hosted a benefit show to raise money for the foundation.  There is no cure or treatment for this disease.  All proceeds from the benefit went to the Choroideremia Research Foundation.

Joe Manganiello’s Pittsburgh Ties

October 3, 2010

Joe Manganiello, True Blood Alcide shirtless

True Blood’s Alcide Interviewed by Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Joe who is a Mt. Lebanon native speaks with Pittsburgh Tribune-Review about his past.

Growing up in Mt. Lebanon, Joe loved action hero’s and monsters.  He didn’t know he wanted to act until he reached high school.  Joe was pretty much the typical guy who played sports.  He caught the acting bug when a friend asked him for his help with a film for chemistry.

Joe was hooked and to everyones surprise even his coaches, he quit sports and tried out for the school’s production of “Oklahoma” and got the lead role of Fry.

Joe stated, “everyone said I made a mistake”.  He also said, “somewhere deep down inside my gut I knew this was something I should do”.

After graduation Joe tried out for Carnegie Mellon University School of Drama, he was rejected.  He went to the University of Pittsburgh and studied theater for a year.  Joe than tried out again at Carnegie Mellon University and was accepted.

After Graduation

Joe headed to Los Angeles and landed a part as Flash Thompson in “Spider Man”.  He went on to do small parts on TV Dramas such as “CSI”, he played Brad on “How I Met Your Mother”, and one of my favorite characters Owen on “One Tree Hill”.

During this time, Alan Ball debuted a new show called “True Blood”.  After the first season was successful and it looked like it was here to stay and follow the books based on Charlaine Harris’s Souther Vampire series, fans of the show begin to blog about the possible actors who could play Alcide.  Joe’s name kept popping up in blog chatter’s.

Joe already watched the show, so when he found out through a friend that viewers wanted him to play Alcide, he read the books, studied the part and realized why fans wanted him.  Joe & Alcide shared alot of similarties.  He started going after the role.  Joe stated, ” In ten years I have never fought so hard to get casted as I fought to be Alcide”.

Joe hopes that through his work as Alcide it will help expand his career.  His plans for the future is to write, produce, and direct.  He’s in negotiations for the rights to one of his favorite comics.  However, to Joe no matter how far his hard work takes him he will always remember his Pittsburgh ties.

Joe’s father wants to put him on the wall of fame at Primanti Bros.  A local hangout for Joe.  Joe state’s, “That to him it would be as good as an Oscar”.  I will always Bleed Black and Gold!  Joe states.

Joe and his character Alcide has alot in common when it comes to there loyalties to there favorite haunts.  With Joe it’s Primanti Bros. and Alcide it’s Lou Pine’s.

Joe in LA

Now that Joe is in Los Angeles he has been investigating new watering holes, and came across one a few years back one that has a fiesty clientele.  It’s seriously obsessed Steeler Fans.  None of the California fans have ever been to Pittsburgh.  But finding such dedicated fans inspired Joe to shoot a short documentary about the group of fans, titled “Diehardz”

Joe still vists frequently PA to see his parents.  They still live in Mt. Lebanon.  When he’s home its a good chance you’ll find him at one of his favorite haunts.  Joe enjoys art and visits exhibits at the Warhol.  You might catch him at the theatre or eating a hamburger at Tessaro’s in Bloomfield.  He has lunch at People’s Indian Restaurant in Garfield, or you might catch him working out at the Gym with his mom.

Being a hometown boy with fame and success, it has put him in position for a special treat.  In November Joe will march in the Celebrate the Season Parade, and the Steelers have invited him to Heinz Field to watch a game.  This is an honor to Joe who is the Ultimate Black and Gold Fan.
