True Blood’s Deborah Ann Woll Talks Vampires and Season 3
August 27, 2010
Though Jessica Hamby doesn’t appear in Charlaine Harris’ Sookie Stackhouse novels, she has become an integral character to the television adaptation, True Blood. The actress who plays the red-headed baby vamp, Deborah Ann Woll talks about season 3, her fangs, and Jessica’s changing attitudes.
If you’re not a fan, Jessica was turned as a punishment for Bill Compton killing a vampire to save Sookie in Season 1. She was taken away from her Christian roots and thrown into the blood flowing vampire society. Though Season 1 gave us a very bratty Jessica, Season 2 and 3 has given viewers a very vulnerable, but powerful vampire learning the ropes of the supernatural world as well as the adult world.
Deborah thinks Jessica is growing up fast and has already seen more than most 17 years old girls do. Viewers may have noticed a change in Jessica’s attitude, but they won’t notice how much she’s grown up until the end of the season.
It’s surprising to see how much Jessica has grown, given that her character was only supposed to have a two or three episode arc. Deborah becoming an integral part of the cast, for her, was a pleasant surprise.
In Season 2, Jessica confronts her family and, for Deborah, that was an important moment. Viewers were able to find out who Jessica was on a deeper level. Before this meeting, Jessica could be shrugged off as annoying or innocent, but upon meeting her family and the environment she grew up in, viewers gained a new respect and understanding to the character. Deborah notes,
“If you had been told every day of your life that you weren’t good enough, that you were ugly, that you weren’t worth anyone’s time, then the minute that you got any kind of freedom, wouldn’t anybody take a mile? And I think that was the moment, at least for me and I think for the character, that we were able to go in another direction.”
The most impressive image of the family meeting was when Jessica slammed her father against the wall. Being tall helped Deborah a lot; her height helps her match most boys or men on television. Though they rehearsed a few times, the scene was only shot once or twice.
When viewers are seeing this scene, they get a glimpse of Jessica as a powerful vampire. Jessica herself is still learning who she is. In the HBO promos, there are scenes where Jessica looks into a mirror checking out how she looks with her fangs and without. For Deborah, the fangs do a lot of work for her; they can create a very intimidating look when in real life she doubts she can intimidate anyone. She reveals,
“You just have to show those pointy little dangerous knives in your mouth, and people listen.”
Though unknown to the audience, for the first five minutes Deborah puts on her fangs, she has a lisp. However, fangs seem to be a plus, as well as the goo and gore she’s covered in for every episode. Deborah loves getting dirty because for her it makes her a better actor. She’s also been strapped to a flying rig, where she entrusts her life to a big burly guy pulling on a rope. While Deborah finds it fun, Jessica’s time high flying have been negative ones, but Deborah hopes that Jessica will have a positive flying experience in the future.
Jessica tends to get thrown around quite a bit. Thankfully, Deborah did some stage combat training when she was younger, where actors are taught how to fall, and how to take a fake punch. In addition, Deborah goes into every fight scene with an open mind and find the experiences fun.
Aside from her fight scenes, Jessica has had a lot of scenes with different characters. Deborah as well as the writers have successfully created different chemistry between Jessica and the other characters. Deborah admits,
“Jim Parrack [as Jessica’s human boyfriend Hoyt] is a terrific actor. I’m so glad he’s getting recognition in this part and I’m so glad that I get to be involved in that, because it’s just very easy to look him in the eye and have a feeling and he really brings that out in people. And then of course, with Stephen and Anna [Paquin as Sookie Stackhouse] – old pros. What else can you say? It’s so effortless for them and I look at that and I admire it and I hope one day to have that. For me, I still have to go home and work for twelve hours [laughs] before I can get a bit of what I need. I hope some day to be able to just transition that smoothly between life and extra-life [in character].
In between Season 2 and 3, Deborah has spent her time being involved in three feature projects as a supporting role. She’s a part of the horror film Mother’s Day, the detective story Little Murder, and the drama Highland Park. She’s also been involved in the True Blood webisodes.
After being involved with 3 different characters for three different movies, coming back to Jessica and True Blood felt like coming back home for Deborah. And now, her home has werewolves. She is loving working with the wolves and respects that although they’re trained, they’re still wild and do what they please.
Aside from her scenes with the wolves, Deborah’s favorite scene from the show would have to be Jessica’s first meeting with Hoyt. Deborah is proud to work with such a brilliant actor and considers him a dear friend. As for interacting with other vampires Deborah thinks,
“Jessica might be a little overwhelmed right now [laughs] and not worried too much about “cool.” That’s kind of what I like about Jessica – I like that she’s not cool. We’re trying to show that within the vampire world, there is a range and you can have ultra-cool Pam and Eric, and then you can have kind of fumbling around, doesn’t know what she’s doing, making a lot of mistakes Jessica. And it’s fun to try and represent that spectrum.”
This season Jessica has faced and will continue to face some challenging moments. She has to struggle with living in a society where some people dislike vampires. The 3rd season will show the darker side of Jessica… viewers will see the things that perhaps vampires must do, but feel shame in doing. From a scared human to a powerful vampire, Jessica has grown with every episode. Deborah is also growing as a new and graceful actress in Hollywood with many more years of exciting and thrilling work ahead of her.

As any actress will no doubt tell you there is a lot of work that goes into the looks they pull off on screen. Deborah, who is 25, likes trying new looks especially for red carpet events. She tells the magazine:
“Your 20s are all about experimentation, you’re still defining your style, and you’re allowed to make mistakes. Hopefully, by the time you reach your 30s, you know better what works and what doesn’t.”
Off screen Deborah likes to keep things simple using only sunscreen, blush and mascara. She does like to put a little more effort into her hair color.
“Growing up pale and blonde, I sometimes felt like I disappeared. So 10 years ago, I picked up a box of red dye at the drugstore, and suddenly I made more of an impact on people.”

My True Blood Experience at Comic-con 2010
July 30, 2010
Exactly a week ago today, I was at Comic-Con, pumped up for the True Blood panel and everything else True Blood related that I could see and do. There was a TON of True Blood stuff at Comic-Con, and regardless of what someone told me, True Blood was THE talk of Con once again! (That person told me Inception would be all people were talking about.)
For me, the True Blood experience started Wednesday when I arrived in San Diego for Preview Night at Comic-Con. I was lucky enough to be staying at the San Diego Bayfront Hotel, which is the hotel that had the True Blood elevators. I loved those elevators, and each trip up and down was an absolute pleasure!
I did attend Preview Night, and while there, I did get my hands on the True Blood comic book issue #1 with the IDW exclusive cover. However, Preview Night was pretty overwhelming for me, so I left early in order to get extra sleep and prepare for the first official day of Comic-Con.
On Thursday, the first day of Comic-Con, I went to the composer panel that featured not only True Blood scorer Nathan Barr, but many other composers who I really admire. As a massive surprise to myself and the rest of the audience, Charlaine Harris opened the panel. It was great, and hearing Charlaine talk about how important music is was a great treat!
As the panel went on, Nathan (who was third from the right on the panel) had a lot to say about scoring, but one thing that really stood out to me in the panel was when Nathan talked about how he has some weird instruments, including one made from human bone! (It’s a human bone trumpet, it came from Tibet, and it’s made from a femur.) Talk about something that’s both creepy and cool! Of course, lots of things were said that were really interesting. Musicians and composers often have great tales about their projects you wouldn’t hear about otherwise, so if you have a chance, take advantage of that and talk to the composers of the shows you like! You never know what you may hear from them!
After the panel, I had the chance to say hi to Nathan again (I’ve met him a couple of times previously) as well as send him another hello from my godfather, who knows him. Nathan was super sweet, as always, and I’m grateful that he and the other composers were all willing to take time for the fans.
Thankfully, that was an easy and very fun part of Comic-Con. I only wish Friday had gone as well as Thursday did.
Friday at Comic-Con was absolutely insane. Not only was I surrounded by 125,000 of my closest friends, my first experience of the day was an absolutely frustrating one. I made sure to arrive early so I could say hello to a friend at a booth before heading towards the WB booth to wait for hours until the True Blood signing.
Once I got over to the area where the WB Booth was, everything was pure pandemonium. First, I had to find a place to sit near the wall, and security at Con was not very good. Every time a new security person came around, new directions were issued at me and everyone sitting around me. It was very frustrating, and only got worse as the hours went on.
During that wait, I sat and talked to tons of True Blood fans about what they liked about Season 3, and everyone had nice things to say about how intense True Blood is and how waiting for a new episode every Sunday can be painful because everyone wants more, and they want it now! To me, it was like being in TrueBloodNet’s fan community, where I’ve heard the same thing over and over again!
There was one strange surprise during that wait time, though. Sarah Palin was at Comic-Con. I didn’t believe it was really her until I walked up to her (as a nice fellow fan saved the area I was sitting at) and saw that it really wasn’t Tina Fey in costume. I did say hi, then walked back to where I was sitting. The other True Blood fans and I all joked around about the reasons Sarah might have for being at Comic-Con, but really could’t come up with any reasons. Either way, it was a nice distraction during the long wait for the True Blood signing.
This is where the pandemonium began. The line setup for the True Blood signing line was absolutely horrific. There were probably around 1,000 fans eagerly awaiting the True Blood signing, and all had been told different things by security. By the time lining up for the panel was approved, there was a whole set of new usurpers in the “official” line, and those people were the ones who got in over everyone else. Security also allowed a smaller aisle near the WB Booth to be entirely blocked by even more fans waiting for the True Blood signing! The final effect was that a lot of people, myself included, could not get into the panel and were very upset. Were I to have been in charge of security and lines near the WB Booth, I would have done a lot of things differently. First, I would have put the signing in a different room and not on the dealer’s floor. Second, I would have held drawings to get in line for the signing. The insanity would have been prevented had that done been done. Hopefully next year, the True Blood signing line will be set up differently.
That’s not the end of my story, though. I was lucky, once again, to get into the True Blood panel, thanks entirely to a friend. Once I got in (a couple panels early), I searched for a seat and even found a really good one. I was in the second set of seating (behind the first main aisle) on the left side of the room. My seat was not as close as it was in 2009, but it was pretty close! However, I was not in that seat for very long. Instead, as soon as the question line was announced, I walked over to it and sat there for the majority of the panel.
The panel was fantastic! The moderator of the panel was awesome, and he made sure to spread his time and questions amongst everyone on the panel. There was also a very amusing moment where Stephen Moyer and Anna Paquin brought a cardboard cutout of Alexander Skarsgard to the panel and jokingly caressed it as they set it down. The panel audience was howling with laughter!
There were several great moments throughout the panel, and a few really stick out in my mind. One was a joke aimed at Rutina Wesley about how Tara should try dating using Match.com. I thought it was really funny, and a lot of the audience agreed! Another great moment was hearing directly from Alan Ball that Joe Manganiello is now going to be a full cast member for Season 4. Lots of cheering and hooting was heard after that announcement.
For me, though, the top moments of the panel over anything else were Alan Ball’s declaration that Bill and Sookie are soul mates and getting the chance to ask a question during the panel.
I was the second to last question that the panel answered, and I asked Stephen Moyer about how Bill’s evolution as a character has affected him as an answer. I swear I could feel myself glowing when Stephen told me that I’d asked a good question!
I had one other True Blood experience while at Comic-Con. Like the previous year, True Blood hosted the annual blood drive (which it turns out that my godmother named), so on Saturday, I went over and donated blood. In exchange for the blood, I got a really cool “My Blood is True” t-shirt, a True Blood water bottle, and a couple of other minor things. The other thing I came home with from donating blood? A giant bruise that’s still healing now. However, even without the stuff, I’m really happy that I gave blood, as blood banks everywhere need the donations!
All in all, even though some of the things that happened to me at Comic-Con was sincerely frustration, I had a great time. I just wish it all hadn’t happened so quickly, because I can barely remember a lot of what I experienced. Thankfully, though, you all can join me in seeing what I saw live by clicking here and watching the videos of the True Blood panel!

True Blood’s Deborah Ann Woll on Beauty
July 29, 2010
Deborah Ann Woll is one of many beautiful women who star on True Blood, and she recently did a photoshoot for MARKTbeauty. Besides the photoshoot, Deborah talked about working on True Blood and shared a little personal story.
One of the things Deborah discussed was the blood used on True Blood. She says that depending on what kind of a wound is in the scene being filmed, the “blood” we see can be a sweet chocolate that’s very syrupy or even pureed vegetables.
That blood doesn’t gross Deborah out in the least though. She says that she doesn’t get scared and she really enjoys filming the weird and gross parts of whatever project she works on. Instead, she finds those parts of her work intriguing. Deborah seems to be pretty fearless.
She’s so fearless, in fact, that Deborah did something pretty big when she was only 15. Not everyone may know it, but Deborah is not a natural redhead. She’s actually a blonde. Because Deborah often felt like she was being overlooked as a blonde, at 15 she rectified that issue by going to a store and buying the nicest red dye she could find. Once she got home, her hair color (and her life) changed forever. Nowadays, Deborah says she “might go blond for a role, but [she'll] always be a redhead.”
It’s a great look on Deborah, and it fits her perfectly in her role as Jessica Hamby!
