How Facebook Helped Joe Manganiello Land the Role of Alcide Herveaux

Joe Manganiello is a busy man, but not so busy that he can’t take the time to be interviewed. In a recent interview, Joe talked about how important his fans (especially the technically savvy) were in his landing the role of Alcide Herveaux in the upcoming season of True Blood. Joe said,

Facebook and the internet were integral to me getting this part. There are ‘True Blood‘ bloggers that were fans of the books. They knew this character was coming up — that it appeared in book three — so they knew it was coming up for season 3. They would blog about who should play the character, and some of these bloggers put up pictures of me.

Joe thanks a friend for letting him know about those posts, since that led to talking to his agents and managers about the possibility for auditioning for True Blood, which led to him read for the part of a different werewolf character, and the possibility of a chemistry reading with Anna Paquin, which unfortunately was unable to take place.

Joe had three readings before he was informed that he had gotten the role of Alcide. Upon hearing that he was going to be Alcide, Joe was pretty excited. He described the experience:

You almost, like, black out for a few seconds because you can’t believe what’s happening. And then all of a sudden this wave of emotion comes, and you realized that all that stuff you tried to keep yourself from daydreaming about rushes in like a flood and you can’t believe you’re there, you got it.

Joe hasn’t started filming True Blood yet, but he’s already training for the role. Joe has been working on a Mississippi accent with dialect coaches since he got the role. He also has been going through what he calls the “werewolf workout,” which includes 45 minutes of cardio before breakfast, afternoon weight training, and eating lots of protein. Joe does all this under the careful eye of his trainer — the same man who Hugh Jackman worked with for X-Men.

Joe describes everything he’s already doing for the role of Alcide as a full-time job, which makes sense because of the lifestyle changes he’s going through for his role. After all, as Joe says, “In this day and age, a werewolf can’t be out of shape.”

It’s going to be great seeing what Joe will bring to Alcide, and what Alcide will bring to True Blood!
