James Frain Wants Vampire Tips from Robert Pattinson

Two British Vampires in the Circus

True Blood's James Frain (Franklin Mott)British actor James Frain, who played off-his-rocker Franklin Mott on HBO‘s True Blood, is in the upcoming film Water for Elephants alongside a fellow Brit, the swoon-worthy Robert Pattinson.  Based on Sara Gruen‘s popular novel of the same name, the film is set in the Great Depression, and revolves around a second rate circus run by husband & wife team August and Marlena Rosenbluth (played by Reese Witherspoon and Christophe Waltz).  Pattinson plays the circus vet, while Frain plays Rosie the elephant’s caretaker.

In an ironic twist, both British vampires had scenes together, but somehow managed to not broach the subject.  Frain regrets this, saying:

“I did have scenes with Robert in Water for Elephants but I’m sorry to say we didn’t swap vampire stories. I wish we had, people can’t believe there’s going to be a scene in the movie with a Twilight vampire talking to a True Blood vampire and that we didn’t spend our time chatting about that.  I wish I’d got vampire tips from him, I wish I’d gone, ‘Oi, Bob mate, any tips?’”

Acknowledging that many of his characters have been villains, he’s completely fine with it.  Like he says, “Bad guys are fun.”  This was especially true for Frain on True Blood, as that role afforded him his first chance to film a sex scene.  He’s thankful the show “made that dream come true.”  The darkness, craziness, and sex aren’t all that he found appealing about playing Franklin, however — he’s glad there was a lighter side to the vampire.  He elaborates:

“One of my favourite scenes involved Franklin at his most jovial. He’s quite a jokey dude. You know vampires have superpower speed? Well, Franklin uses this to text on a cellphone, showing off to Tara how quickly he can text. It’s like watching a kid with a video game, but at this point, he’s kidnapped Tara and has her chained to a bed, so she’s failing to be entertained.”

There’s no doubt fans remember this scene… it was hilarious!  It’s great that Frain has been enjoying his work, and that he’s had nothing but good experiences with fan encounters.  Hollywood’s been good to him, and we hope he sticks around.  Did you enjoy his portrayal of Franklin?  Do share your thoughts!

I loved Franklin and miss his character. I so wish he would come back in a flashback or two. Too funny.

    • 100% agreed! Franklin was awesome.

      Hi jaxx and Isis,

It might be far fetched but maybe the witches know how to resurrect the dead. I know Russell was insane with grief but he really seemed to believed that he could bring Talbot back. Sookie laughed it off but what if he knew something that she didn’t? It would be great to see Franklin in some flashback. I don’t want crazy Maryanne to ever come back though.

You know, I kind of remember something about witches and resurrecting the dead spells being talked about early on. Who knows, Catilin, you may be right. If so, I hope we see Franklin and Talbot again. RE thought Tablot could be resurrected somehow so your theory isn’t that far fetched. Can’t wait to find out. 🙂

          Hi jaxx,

I just remembered that they said these witches were necromancers. Supposedly, necromancers could manipulate and raise the dead. I don’t think it will happen though but that would be an interesting twist. If Talbot showed up can you imagine the look on Eric’s face? It will be interesting to see how and when Russell returns to the show.
