Joe Manganiello Gets Buff to Play Alcide

June 10, 2010 by

Well True Blood fans – we are four days away from season 3 of True Blood!! The anticipation is out of this universe!  One of the things we are all most excited about is the introduction of werewolf, Alcide Herveaux, portrayed by Joe Maganiello.

In order to prepare for the part Joe had to bulk himself up so he would be able to bring the character of Alcide to life.

Vampires can get away with having very slight builds and the audience will still believe that they’re super powerful.  Werewolves are animals and in my mind they should be very muscular. Not an extra ounce of fat on them. Really ripped. I wanted people to look at Alcide and think, ‘wow, he’s a super strong animal.'”

Joe also had to work on a nice tan for the part because this is a huge element that sets the werewolves apart from the pale vampires. Plus werewolves are known for their raging heated temperatures.  Joe also put in so much work into looking the part because he wanted to create the vision of Alcide that Charlaine Harris had written about in the book series. Charlaine described Alcide as being a giant and having big arms and a muscular physique.

The actor was a little bit ahead of the power curve because he has a long family history of giant athletes. Joe explains:

“My mom is half Austrian and comes from a long line of giant athletes. I remember my mom doing double bicep flexes and her arms were just ripped. She had like Madonna arms. She would flex and say, “that’s where you get it kid.” So I have my mother to thank.”

Well we would like to thank his mom as well for helping to give the world the perfect ‘Alcide Herveaux‘. Catch the season premiere of True Blood in only 4 days, Sunday June 13th!

I’ve just read an article online about Joe’s workout regimen…Whoa! It seems like a tough, grueling program! I give guys like Joe and Ryan Kwanten a Lot of credit for working So hard to build up their bodies and get in shape!! It takes a Lot of hard work and dedication to get buff like that!! I dont know if I could maintain that!! LOL
Joe Also worked with the same personal trainer that Hugh Jackman used to get in that muscular shape for X-Men Wolverine!
It’s Not about getting a “killer bod” moreso about learning to maintain optimum health and personal fitness…It should be a way of life and not just a “diet”.
Ok Im starting to sound like an Info-mercial!! LOL
Anyway I’m glad for Joe I’m sure he will make Some Bad-Ass Werewolf!! 🙂

Wow! Alan has an uncanny ability to pick the best actors for these roles! He has been spot on so far with the people that I could see playing that character.. Can’t wait to see who he gets to play Quinn!!! Given how muscular and big Quinn is in the books, Alan has a tall order to fill to satisfy this roll and the Quinn fans out there. 🙂

I used to think that being a vampire on TB would be Super Cool!
I agree with Joe’s thought here..It doesnt really matter How a Vampire is built because vampires can be wiry and yet incredibly strong. A vampire’s strength is in his intellect and his influence to glamor or mezmerize. Whereas with Werewolves they are feral creatures…Creatures of brute strength and muscle!
I’ve always thought that Vampires were the “brains” and Werewolves were the “brawn”. One thing to the Were’s discredit, Its difficult to outsmart a Vampire because they have had centuries to perfect their minds! Werewolves can be sloppy because they operate on brute force and instinct…They are the type to “shoot” first and think about it later…If at all!
I’ll admit something here… If I could look That good,I’d Be a Werewolf!! LOL This guy is Amazing! Forget the 6 pack
This guy has an 8 Pack Hes ripped,Man!! If I could get myself to look that good I’d be a Werewolf like Alcide!!
I’ve always liked Werewolves better Anyway!
Something about the primal nature roaming free no consequence or accountability
    Sam makes a cool “shifter”.
But I dont think he’s alpha male material Thats just MHO
Congrats to Joe and to the entire Cast and Crew!!
    Go Team TB!!
2 DAYS REMAIN I Cant Believe it!!
    🙂 🙂

The more I read about Joe, the more I like him. He is going to become a favorite very quickly. He is good looking and has a great physique. I like the way he really wants to portray Alcide as in the books. I think he will be my new “second favorite”.

Hi Jaxx. As my second favourite it is a tie between Alcide and Franklin Mott! I love Alcide’s sympathetic style and Love Franklin’s cheeky scariness!
