Joe Manganiello’s Werewolf Workout

June 17, 2010 by

New True Blood castmember Joe Manganiello was a fan of the show, so he knew what he was getting into when he accepted the role of Alcide Herveaux. To prepare himself for the inevitable body baring that would be required for a werewolf, he hired Ron Mathews, a veteran trainer, to turn him into the animal.

Joe went on a strict diet of 2,500 calories a day, with plenty of lean, protein-filled meat. He adhered to an intense program of twice-a-day workouts, six days a week, that enhanced his muscles and brought him down to 8 percent body fat.

Mathews shared the workout with the New York Post, although he offered the advisory that “to have your body fat that low is almost impossible to maintain and isn’t necessarily healthy”– only those with a specific goal and months of time to dedicate to it should attempt a workout as rigorous as the one Joe did.

For arms, he would do functional cable curls in all different directions so that each time the arms came together, different fibers in the arm muscles were being worked.

To focus on the shoulders, Joe did drop sets that started out very heavy, and gradually lessened the weight until he couldn’t do anymore. He also did lots of twisting exercises and leg raises to work his abdominal muscles.

The key, Mathews says, was to keep his heart rate up.

“We’d do a set of chest, then go right into a set of biceps, and then go back to a set of chest…After about 20 minutes, it feels like you’re doing sprints. It’s hands-on-your-knees, sweat-dripping-off-your-nose, can’t-catch-your-breath crazy.”

All of Joe’s work definitely paid off and gave him a very sculpted body that Truebies will appreciate when they finally see Alcide!

Its great that Joe M. would share his workout secrets with us. Gives me some ideas on how to better manage my own fitness level.
Anyway,As i’ve said before This dude will make one hell of a Werewolf! I would concur with others here who have said that He has an impressive build and a ripped core. As to Alcide/Sookie? Bring it on!! I’m sure that in Bill’s absence Many of these guys will be drawn to her! As QSA was telling Eric at the end of season 2 that Sookie is “more than human” and that supes would be drawn to her…Hmmmm
Well,I’m No supe and I’m drawn to her!! LOL
I suppose that this season we will find out just What she is and whats So special about her?
It seems that Most of the cast worked out to get in shape for this new season…They All look great!
