True Blood Makes TV Guide’s Unforgettable Moments for 2010

January 3, 2011

Sookie’s A Fairy!

Anna Paquin as Sookie StackhouseWhile fans of the Sookie Stackhouse Novels knew “what” Sookie was, she remained in the dark until this past season of True Blood.  The episode where Sookie discovered that she is a fairy made in onto the TV Guide’s list of most unforgettable moments for 2010.

While this moment beat the likes of the series finale of 24 and the song and dance number that Jimmy Fallon and the cast of Glee performed at the Prime-time Emmy’s, it made the list for being, well, a little…lame. As Sookie herself quoted:

I’m a fairy? How f**king lame!

She isn’t the only one who felt this way.  The fact that Bill mentioned that another name for fairies is ‘aliens’ and that Sookie’s fae relatives could also be termed as possible ‘rapist fairies’ (once again Sookie’s quote) was enough to get under the skin of TV and radio personality Kennedy, amongst others.

The full reaction can be seen in the video footage below (around the 2:05 mark).

Alfre Woodard Speaks Passionately of South African Democracy

December 22, 2010

A Cause Dear to Her Heart

Alfre Woodard and Nelsan EllisRecently Alfre Woodard, who plays Lafayette’s mother, Ruby Jean Reynolds on HBO‘s True Blood, appeared on the Smiley & West radio show to express her passion and concern for for South Africa.

Woodard, who grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma, talked first of the sense of community growing up in the mainly African area and how it has led to her activism in South Africa.

Artists for a New South Africa:

Woodard, who is not only portrays Lafayette’s institutionalized mother on True Blood, but appears on ‘Memphis Beat’ on the TNT network, also serves on the board of Artists for a New South Africa (ANSA).

She explains that she grew up with a strong sense of purpose due to the political and changing climate of the time, as well as her Catholic beliefs. She explained that this led to her need to help others less fortunate than herself.

And this is where Artists for a New South Africa steps in for Woodard with their anti-apartheid support.  The group was originally a grassroots way for people to spread information about South Africa and their needs through their own communities.  Woodard was able to do this even though she claimed she had ‘no community’.

It turned out that the whole country was her community as an actor. ANSA started to hold press conferences using the theory that if you got three actors together, people would listen, regardless of what they were saying.

Woodard then talks about how South Africa is going with its new democracy. She talks of descending crime syndicates as well as trying to bridge the vast difference between the haves and have-nots.

Alfre and Acting:

It is amazing that Woodard can find the time for her political activism with all her other activities. She has starred in such shows as The Practice, LA Law and Hill Street Blues. She has won four Emmys and been nominated for an Academy Award for‘ Cross Creek‘.

Interviewer Cornell West wanted to know how Woodard blended all her artistic endeavors with all the finer details of her activism. She responded with:

You missed the most important job I have – raising children.

Woodard is the proud mother of Mavis, 19, and Duncan, 16. She goes on to explain:

Love is exponential.  When you act out of good motives… energy comes to you. Sometime you burn out…but I love going to work.

She calls her work art, regardless of what it is, whether it be two lines of script or a main character. This is because she sees herself as coming from a long line of storytellers. She relates it back to being African American and telling stories around a fire in order to reach out to people.

Life in LA:

Woodard claims she is always happy to get home to LA and particularly Southern California because she now calls this area her own. For all the shallowness, she states, there is just something special about California. Even as a small child she said she wanted to live there. She puts it all down to the fact that in California:

You have the ability to be whoever you want to be, which leads to tolerance of others.

Which in turns leads her back to the belief that a democracy is important. For both America and for her beloved South Africa.

The full interview can be viewed here.

They’re also building a “weird looking metal shack” and allowing Sam (Sam Trammell) to go more grey this season. You heard it here first, people! (Sorry if we just ruined the whole season for you.)

Sam Trammell Shares True Blood Season 4 Spoilers

November 16, 2010 by Isis Nocturne (Edit)

Sam Trammell talks Shapeshifters, Nudity, etc.

Sam Trammell won’t be eating Thanksgiving dinner this year. Instead, he’ll be focusing on looking his best for the beginning of filming the fourth season of True Blood. The actor, who plays our favorite shifter/bar owner Sam Merlotte, told writer Scott Huver that he’ll be filming scenes in the nude almost immediately after he gets back on set.

Bon Temps is also up for an upheaval of sorts. According to Sam, not only are there new characters that he’ll be interacting with, but more shapeshifter drama will occur. Sam said,

“There are gonna be some really cool shapeshifter-y things happening. There might be a shapeshifter community that we meet. And I can’t say what it is, but there’s something that happened that sort of changes everything, something at the beginning changes everything in town. So it’s going to be cool, because you have the same characters and the same deal, but there’s going to be something that makes it all fresh.”

Better yet, fans won’t have to wait long to see the first OMG! moment of Season 4 of True Blood. According to Sam, it happens very early on in the first episode of the new season.

Are the spoilers making you more excited for the upcoming Season 4 of True Blood?

SPOILERS: Kristin Bauer and Sam Trammell Talk True Blood Season 4

October 20, 2010

What Kristin Bauer Would Love to see in True Blood’s Fourth Season

Kristin Bauer van Straten loves True Blood, and is looking forward to Season 4 and how it progresses. Of course, the lovely lady we know as vampire Pam Ravenscroft hopes to see a few things happen throughout the season.

Like many other fans, Kristin would love to see the fourth season of True Blood include several scenes from Charlaine Harris‘ fourth book in the Southern Vampire Mystery series, Dead to the World. She speculates:

“The storyline with Eric losing his mind next year may happen, which I think would be very hysterical. [Alexander Skarsgård] is an extremely comedic actor. He is very funny. A lot of people didn’t see him in Zoolander and [don’t] know how funny he can be. I would love for him to do that in his vampire character.”

Sam Trammell’s True Blood Season 4 Hint

Sam Trammell also spoke up about True Blood’s fourth season. He didn’t say much, but he did proclaim that the new season of True Blood will be even more eventful that the third season was. And though he doesn’t know exactly what that will mean for Sam Merlotte, he’s sure that he’ll be taking his clothes off a lot.

True Blood Actors Are Very Charitable

November 18, 2010

Manganiello, Woodard Lend Star Power To Myeloma Foundation:

Joe Manganiello, True Blood's Alcide Herveaux, attends charity event with fiance Audra Marie

With all the deserving charitable causes, it must be quite difficult for our True Blood acting faves to find time to give of themselves. How to choose? Well, it seems judging from their vast participation in charitable work benefiting everything from saving the oceans to helping domestic animals to showing care and concern for a neighborhood family in need, many True Blood cast members simply can’t say no to helping others.

Recent case in point, on Saturday, November 13, International Myeloma Foundation (IMF) held its ‘4th Annual Comedy Celebration’ raising funds and awareness of the disease while honoring the memory of late actor Peter Boyle. The star-studded event was hosted by Ray Romano, Boyle’s co-star from ‘Everybody Loves Raymond,’ who was joined by Romano’s on-screen mother on the show, Doris Roberts.Alfre Woodard, True Blood's Ruby Jean Reynolds, attends a charity function

Among the numerous celebs that turned out to lend their time and star appeal were Joe Manganiello (Alcide Herveaux) and his fiance Audra Marie, as well as Emmy-winning actress Alfre Woodard, who made such a memorable impression as Lafayette‘s schizophrenic mom, Ruby Jean Reynolds.

Other celebs who gave of their time and talent included Dana Carvey, Jeff Garlin, Susie Essman, Fred Willard and Carlos Mencia.

In addition to the show, guests enjoyed pre-cocktail party and a silent auction. Some of the items included guitars signed by Keith Richards and Sting and the boxing gloves formerly belonging to to Mohammed Ali and Sugar Ray Leonard.

Lucky VIP ticket holders also enjoyed a chance to mingle with the stars during the after-party.

Two True Blood Villains Make List of 15 Creepiest TV Characters

November 14, 2010

Russell and Maryann “Characters That Give Us The Heebie-Jeebies”

There are a number of TV characters that give us the creeps.  Could be the way they look or maybe its the way they act, but some characters stand out more than others. recently put out a list of the 15 television characters that disturb us the most and True Blood’s own Russell Edgington and Maryann Forrester made the cut!  Here is the complete list.

Russell Edgington – True Blood

Russell Edgington True Blood

At over 3000 years old the Vampire King of Mississippiis used to doing what he wants without consequence.  Having that kind of power would definitely go to your head.  Russell begins the season kidnapping Bill, sharing his blood with werewolves and beheading the Magister.  However once his long time lover Talbot is killed, Russell goes from evil to unbalanced in the blink of an eye, ripping out the spine of an on-air anchorman and staking a human to re-enact his lover’s death.  Arguably his “creepiest” act was carrying Talbot’s remains around in a glass jar until they were flushed down the garbage disposal.

Lilith – Supernatural

Lilith was a demon that possess humans on Supernatural.  She is disturbing enough when she is in the form of a little girl, however what cemented her position on this list was when she was all grown up and it was revealed that she eats babies.

Angelus – Buffy the Vampire Slayer & Angel

There were a number of scary characters on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the spin-off Angel, however none stand out more than Angelus.  Alternating between terrorizing Buffy and tapping into his inner stalker by drawing her in her sleep, it was his murder of Jenny Calendar that earned him his spot on this list.  As if killing her wasn’t bad enough, he left her dead body in bed for her boyfriend to find, after making the scene look like a carefully planned seduction.

Maryann Forrester – True Blood

The first time we see Maryann is standing by the side of the road, naked, with a pig.  Its hard to believe but it was actually downhill from there.  There are several things which could have landed Maryann on this list.  From causing the town to engage in orgies, her sacrifice to her god or serving human heart pie, take your pick!

Der Kindestod – Buffy The Vampire Slayer

Der Kindestod’s looks alone could land him on this list.  On top of being creepy looking, he cannot be seen by healthy people and preys on sick children, which only adds to his disturbing vibe.  This demon is so bad that his episode is one of the only Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode’s that isn’t shown in reruns.  He meets his end by Buffy snapping his neck.

The Wraith – Stargate: Atlantis

The Wraith are a telepathic alien species that feed on the life force of human beings.  While their perfectly normal names like Todd and Michael are amusing, the feeding organs on their hands that reduces humans to ugly messes, earned them their spot on this list.

The Peacock Family – The X-Files

If the inbreeding doesn’t disturb you enough, the limbless mutant mother ought to do it for you.  There are numerous reasons this family will give you the heebie-jeebies.

Benjamin Linus – Lost

Benjamin Linus was the leader of the Others and his motives for the most part were never really clear.  He was responsible for the death of several people on the island.  Ben constantly changed sides and the mind games, combined with his beady little eyes earned him his spot on the list.

Dave Williams – Desperate Housewives

Just one look at Dave Williams and you know something is not quite right.  He screams mentally unbalanced.  We learn that his wife and child were killed in a car accident prompting him to dive right off the deep end.  He kills his shrink, sets a fire and blames a child for it and chokes his wife.  In his final act of crazy he kidnaps Susan and her son earning himself a trip to the loony bin and a spot on this list.

Pennywise The Dancing Clown – IT

Let’s face it – clowns can be pretty creepy.  When you add in that this particular clown shapeshifts into whatever his victim fears most, well its no wonder he’s on this list.

The Gentlemen – Buffy the Vampire Slayer

The Gentlemen are fairy tale ghouls who steal your voice so you can’t scream while they take out your heart.  They do this while smiling and clapping.  Creepy much?  Out of the 44 minute episode that The Gentlemen are part of there is only 17 minutes of dialogue.  This was also the only episode of the show to earn an Emmy Nomination for Outstanding Writing.

The Smoke Monster – Lost

The fact that this is an unexplained fog with an apparent agenda is unsettling enough!  The Man In Black was turned into the fog after an encounter with the Heart of the Island.  It manifests itself as other people and uses this ability to lure people to its side.  Many of the deaths were a result of The Smoke Monster whether directly or indirectly.

The Reavers – Firefly & Serenity

Reavers are humans who live on the fringes of civilized space and have turned animalistic.  With a warning label of “they’ll rape us to death, eat our flesh and sew our skins into their clothing, and if we’re very, very lucky, they’ll do it in that order”, its not surprising that they made the list.

Matthias Pavayne – Angel

Matthias Pavayne was a doctor that was nicknamed The Reaper for performing unnecessary, fatal surgeries on his patients.  He committed a series of brutal, ritualistic murders.  An eerie chant of “It’s gonna get you. Reaper’s gonna get you” is enough to creep you out.

Trinity/Arthur Mitchell – Dexter

Arthur Mitchell was a serial killer on Dexter, who was also known as the Trinity Killer. Arthur managed to portray the kindly family man to the general public, while flying into rages in private.  He is obsessed with his dead family members and he manages to get into your head and disturb you.

So what do you think of this list?  Is there anyone obviously missing?

Greg Fienberg Satiates True Blood Fans at Cinematheque

October 28, 2010

Boston University College of Communication Hosts Greg Fienberg

True Blood’s co-producer Greg Fienberg satiated fans at the Boston University College of Communication by giving a lecture about the hit series. As part of a series entitled “Cinematheque,” Greg screened an episode of True Blood and then discussed the process of how a show moves from the original development to broadcast, while also giving great advice for those considering a future in the film and television industries.

As a producer for the television series “Twin Peaks” and the film “Gods and Monsters,” Greg is knowledgable in the difference between the visual genres. He noted,

“with movies, you have two hours to work with; you shoot, edit, then prep and you’re done. But with television you never know how long you’re gonna go. Sometimes you’re shooting, editing, and prepping all at the same time. It’s chaotic.”

Although most television shows involve 20 to 22 scripts per season, True Blood dedicates its season to only 12 scripts, putting a lot of pressure on the writers. Gregs was very adamant that:

“Every single script better be damn good…It is very sophisticated writing, the tone is shifting all the time…the people who develop the script, buy the script, and put it on the air are all the same people. Usually it’s a bunch of different studios. This makes the whole process more cohesive; it really works well.”

What Greg enjoys about working with True Blood is that the audience doesn’t have to be spoon fed ideas; the fans are intelligent and thoughtful viewers, looking for more than a cheap thrill. The Emmy award winner was able to connect with such fans during his lecture and he compared it to being at Comic-Con…without girls screaming for Eric Northman, that is.

It seems that Greg and True Blood have changed the minds of even the most skeptical person when it comes to television and what it means to have creative stories brought to one’s living room. To prove his point, Greg screened “New World In My View” (the tenth episode of season two) to prove the progression of a script and the hard work involved to create a well crafted story. Attendees were asked to read the first and last drafts of the scripts in order to realize the evolution good writing takes.

Many BU students left excited and with their questions answered; he truly gave them material to work with for their future careers in the film and television industry. Now all we have to do is figure out how Greg Fienberg can come to a campus near you.

To hear some of the advice that Greg gave to the BU students, watch the video below.

True Blood Fashion at the 2010 Scream Awards

October 20, 2010

The Stars of True Blood Dressed for Success

The red carpet was rolled out for the stars at Spike’s Scream Awards this past Saturday.  True Blood cast members were a big hit as they sailed down that red carpet wearing a variety of winning outfits. I would describe the fashion seen at the 2010 Scream Awards as “cocktail casual”.  Cocktail-length dresses were very popular with the female contingent, and denim/blazer combinations dominated the male wardrobe for this awards show.  It’s a good thing all of our favorite True Blood celebrities were looking so good, because they were making quite a few trips up to the stage to collect well-deserved awards.

“Elegant” and “sophisticated” are words often used to describe Anna Paquin (Sookie).  Her look at the 2010 Scream awards was no exception.  Anna wore a beautiful Alexander McQueen dress simply accessorized with a chunky bracelet and matching clutch purse.  The touches of gold on the accessories was a great choice that added warmth and sparkle to this ensemble. Some may remember the Alexander McQueen dress Anna wore to the 2010 Emmy awards.  It seems that Anna is certainly fond of showing off a favorite designer!  While Anna Paquin chose a decidedly “un-Sookie” outfit for the award show, Stephen Moyer (Bill Compton) seemed to have pulled his outfit together from Vampire Bill’s closet.  Stephen accompanied his new wife wearing dark denim, a casual gray tee and a loose-fitting leather jacket.  A great look for fall and on par with the other male celebs attending the Scream Awards.

While I think Rutina Wesley (Tara) looks amazing in anything she wears, I would have liked to have seen more risk taken with her ensemble at this year’s Scream Awards.  Her Camilla and Marc dress has an interesting toga-like design, but the only color in Rutina’s outfit comes from her accessories.  She carried a red clutch purse and wore an eye-catching silver and gold necklace.  The gold in the necklace and the clutch tied her accessories together for a look that was put-together and understated.

Not one to be outdone, Kristin Bauer (Pam) shows off her new orchid tattoo in this sleeveless Mandalay semi-sheer sequined dress.  Kristin chose a jewel-encrusted chunky bracelet and a black clutch purse to accessorize her super-sparkly dress.  This is not the first trip down the red carpet for this Mandalay dress, however; Rebecca Pigeon wore it to the premiere of “Red” last week.  In my opinion, Kristin wore it better.  Hair, makeup, and accessories pulled this ensemble together for Kristin.  Making a sequined outfit work requires that certain “je ne sais quoi”, and Kristin Bauer has it in spades.
