Stephen Moyer’s Casting as Bill Compton

Variety examined the difficult task casting directors have in casting the right actor in roles to ensure the characters are brought to life and allows the audiences to develop a connection with them.  It is not only about saying the lines correctly, but trying to find the right person who can portray the diverse qualities in a character that can be demonstrated not only in words but in movement and in the slight nuances.

In casting Stephen Moyer as vampire Bill Compton for “True Blood,” Libby Goldstein and Junie Lowry-Johnson searched for “an old soul with modern qualities.”

It was tricky,” says Johnson. “We had to find someone in his 30s that you believed was 150 years old, and Steve had that quietness, that stillness, an older quality. You could believe that he had been alive for 150 years that he had lived many lives. The fact that he’s British may have helped. Americans seem very modern.”

It took many months of screening many actors before finding the right actor capable of conveying all the qualities in vampire Bill.   Fortunately Stephen won the role for which no one could now image anyone else being able to deliver the complexity of the character as well as Stephen does in True Blood. Definitely a job well done by the casting directors, for not only in the casting of Stephen as vampire Bill, but for all the characters on the show for which they won an Emmy for “Outstanding Casting For a Drama Series” last year.
