True Blood’s Tara Buck Talks About Ginger & Eric & THAT Scene!

August 18, 2014

Tara Buck Describes the Logistics of a Sex Scene with Eric Northman:

Ginger (Tara Buck) and Eric Northman (Alexander Skarsgard) get intimate in HBO's True Blood Season 7 Episode 9 (entitled 'Love is to Die')Well, wasn’t Episode 9 of HBO’s True Blood Season 7 interesting? For one cast member in particular, it was the climax of a promise made years earlier! If you haven’t watched the episode yet, you can read our recap by clicking here.

Tara Buck, who plays everyone’s favorite screamer, Ginger, finally got her moment on the throne with Eric Northman (Alexander Skarsgard). And – surprisingly – she didn’t even scream:

In the script, there was a wonderful note: Ginger doesn’t scream. Everybody’s expecting her to scream, so do something else. What they wrote was a high-pitched, almost electric sound that’s almost a little eerie. So we tried all kinds of things. I thought it would be fun if there was a moment where you think Ginger’s actually having a heart attack—you think it could be the end for her.

While Ginger has been an Eric Northman groupie for longer than most of us truebies, she admitted that for Ginger, the anticipation leading up to her sexual encounter with the viking vampire, may have been her very undoing – and why that sex lasted such a short amount of time.

With the deed completed in only a few short moments, in reality, it took hours of filming to get the scene just right. This meant that by the end of the day’s shooting, Tara’s core strength had gotten quite a workout:

I had the stunt double and was thinking to myself, “I only get three pumps. I am not letting somebody else come in here and finish this off.” [Laughs] So the only way to have a dismount is to slowly fall back. In my head, I imagined the funniest thing would be climax and then Ginger just falls out of frame. But we couldn’t shoot it that way. I had imagined a soft pad or something that I could just fall off of him onto. But when we were doing rehearsal, there was no pad there yet. So from the noise—the tea kettle, sort of hissing—she just sloooowly falls backward and then slides off of him. Mostly I slid off of him because I was trying not to get hurt in rehearsal.

Considering Ginger is the ultimate Team Eric groupie, Tara fully admits she ‘took one for the team‘ with last night’s encounter with Eric:

I do love that after everything that Ginger’s been put through, she finally got hers. As an actress who looks after her character, loves her character, feels very emotionally connected and attached, I am proud of Ginger. I feel that she worked very hard for that carrot at the end of the trail, and good for her. I also think Ginger became the archetype for Alexander’s fans, so for all the ladies out there, I took one for the team, and I couldn’t have been happier to do that. [Laughs]

True Blood’s Tara Buck Talks Big Hair, Big Screams and Big Backstory

July 18, 2014

Ginger’s Story Unfolds in True Blood Season 7:

Who knew that Ginger (Tara Buck) invented Fangtasia? HBO's True Blood Season 7 Episode 4 (Death is Not the End)Ginger (Tara Buck) is one of those characters in HBO’s True Blood that you just love for no reason at all. But its in Episode 4 of this season, we started to see behind the over-glamored veil of Ginger’s fan-girl-dom surrounding Eric Northman (Alexander Skarsgard), Pam (Kristin Bauer van Straten) and vampires in general, leading us to know her just a little bit better and love her just a little bit more.

We see smart and vamp-smitten college student Ginger walk into the video store owned by  Eric and Pam only to realize that;

  1. They were vamps
  2. They were hiring
  3. Her life long dream of ‘being with’ a vampire could actually happen!

The scene with Ginger talking Pam’s ear off, about vampire movies, when Eric walks into the store it was described by Tara Buck as;

This is Ginger’s whole True Blood experience in this moment. [Laughs] At first Gregg [Fienberg] wanted it to be pretty subtle. And then we laughed, and we’re like, “You know what, let’s try not subtle, but it’s all internal. It’s still Ginger in 1996, so it’s not like a screaming over-the-top Ginger. It’s still a smart girl whose knees go weak and she can hardly stand up.”

The screaming things started way back in Season 1, quite by accident but it soon became ‘Ginger’s thing’;

She’s in that great scene where Bill (Stephen Moyer) stakes Longshadow (Raoul Trujillo), and he disintegrates, and I throw up. Sookie (Anna Paquin) is covered from head to toe in blood, so I think she and I both scream. It wasn’t a planned thing. When I came back, again it wasn’t necessarily there, but then I put it in. I started screaming, and then it became a running gag. I kept thinking, especially after Season 2, I was like, “I’ve got to stop screaming. How much can you scream before people want to put your eyes out?”

In this season we get to see so much of Ginger’s back story how she came to meet Eric and Pam by working for them in a video store that they owned in Shreveport for 10 years before Ginger came up with the idea, after the vampires had come out of the closet, that they should turn the store into a night club and call it Fangtasia! Ginger states:

Eric Northman is nothing if he is not pure f–king sex on a throne…”

while wielding an amazing throne-like chair she had found and that sex sells!

The inspiration for Ginger’s looks in this episode were “Reality Bites” vs Goth/punk leading to her hair getting blonder, bigger and the make up bolder!

Tara in an interview with The Hollywood reporter revealed that one of her favourite scenes Happened in True Blood Season 4:

I do love when I was in Season 4, when Pam had a skin-eating disease and I have to give her shots. She has that wonderful pink coffin, and the witches start calling, and her coffin is shaking. I have no idea what to do to assist her, but I swore that I would protect her, so all I can think to do is jump on top of that coffin. It definitely sort of solidified the screaming.

From smart and sassy, to spunky and scream-worthy, I think we all can say there is a soft place for Ginger in all our hearts now.

The Vampires of True Blood Have a Problem with Authority

July 5, 2012

Facing Threats From All Directions, Will the Vampire Authority Always Win?

The Mellencamp jokes abound in the aftermath of HBO’s broadcast of the third episode of Season 5 of True Blood. Chris Meloni made his long-awaited appearance as Roman Zimojic, and viewers were introduced to the characters who make up the body of the Authority. Eric Northman (Alexander Skarsgård) and Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer) might be viewed as an external threat to the Authority’s authority, but fans have begun to learn the greatest threat might be an internal one.

Alan Ball has said that Season 5 of True Blood would be a reflection of the current state of America’s political battle between extreme religion and secularism. Episode 3 revealed that the Authority will be the vehicle used to present that battle. Roman, as head of the Authority, is the Guardian of the blood of Lilith, and is the main architect of Mainstreaming. Among the seven Chancellors, there is a faction known as Sanguinistas. These are literal and rigidly dogmatic vampires who believe humans are meant to be cultivated as food.

The Authority: The First. The Last. The Eternal:

For an inside peek at The Authority check out HBO’s Inside True Blood Blog which sports a video titled “The Authority: The First. The Last. The Eternal”. The video is filled with scenes from the episode, as well as interviews with cast and crew. The interviews shed light on events viewers have already seen, and hints at exciting things yet to come. It’s entertaining and well worth the watch.  On the more humorous side is Jessica’s video blog featuring her new BFF, Ginger. The socially awkward baby vamp and the consummate fangbanger discuss cutting edge fashion for the daring vampire. Nothing that leads to Jessica planning to purchase a ‘bandage dress’ on Bill’s credit card can be good. Check out the video below!

True Blood Break Out Star Tara Buck

October 5, 2010

Tara Buck on Being Fangtasia Waitress Ginger

One of the hardest working characters on True Blood is undeniably Ginger. Fans are  faced with mixed emotions on the fang banger: either they feel pity for her glamored brain or frustrated that she allows vampires to abuse her. While there are many opinions on Ginger, the actress who plays her hasn’t had too much publicity until now.

Former Ketchum and Hailey resident Tara Buck is now acting in sunny LA alongside big names such as Anna Paquin, Stephen Moyer, and Alexander Skarsgard. While the talented actress has had numerous guest starring roles since she graduated from Wood River High School in 1993, she hopes her career is now beginning.

Tara plays the human waitress Ginger at Fangtasia, the vampire bar Eric Northman (Alexander Skarsgard) owns. It is her shrill screams and barely there outfits that make her presence known when she is surrounded by brooding vampires. In the last season, she became a fan favorite when she offered to make Sookie a Peanut Butter and butter sandwich.

Tara doesn’t know what will happen with Ginger as the actors aren’t given the scripts until filming begins (the 4th season is slated to begin filming sometimes in mid to late November and will air in the summer of 2011). However, she did say that the show’s allure is the way Alan Ball has merged the supernatural element to the everyday pains of human life. She notes,

“What’s so compelling about his storytelling is he picks things that are weird and offbeat and quirky and then he puts a very human relatable heartbeat through the entire thing.”

She adds that though the show can be grisly at times, the backstage mood is easy going. She would know given that she’s been on a number of sets including, NCIS, X-Files, Bones, The Closer, Nip/Tuck, and The Shield. Aside from her onscreen characters, Tara has also done work on the stage, including the Pulitzer winning play How I Learned How To Drive and in 2009 Ten Cent Night.

Additionally film has not escaped her talent. Tara starred in the independent film Storage, which has yet to be released. Recently, she can be seen in the humorous GEICO commercials as a young woman who mistakes the GEICO gecko for a former lover.

While she enjoys her working on the hit show True  Blood, Tara also wants to star in her own series as guest spots and minor recurring roles don’t allow her to develop a character. While True Blood is on hiatus, Tara is spending her time audtioning for more roles, saying she isn’t in the position to be very picky yet, though she is drawn to characters that portray the underbelly of society.

Tara’s mother is the first one to say her daughter’s taste in roles stem from an interest in the dark side of humanity though Tara herself is warm and gentle. Watching her playing Ginger and other sexy cursing characters amuses Tara’s mother, who enjoys watching her work.

Work she does, which is a sentiment also shared by her former theater teacher Bob Kesting, who saw her as a dream to work with and someone willing to throw herself into her roles. Both Bob and Tara’s mother await the day when Tara makes it big. It is this support that guides her and keeps her working hard. She notes,

“I just think about what a journey it’s been. A lot of ups and downs…I love it and I wouldn’t change it for anything.”

Once again, Alan Ball has brought to light a beautiful and talented actress. Ginger may be glamored to the point of utter confusion, but Tara Buck isn’t. It’s time Hollywood threw out the red carpet for this shining star.
