Ryan Kwanten – True Blood’s Man of Many Talents

December 13, 2011

From Jason Stackhouse to Nerd!

Ryan Kwanten stars as Jason Stackhouse in HBO's True BloodFor fans of HBO’s True Blood, Ryan Kwanten is known as the lovable but less than intelligent, Jason Stackhouse, brother to the much loved waitress, Sookie. But Kwanten is very versatile when it comes to acting roles. While he is happy with the part of Jason, during the off-season of True Blood, he prefers to play roles that are distinctly different to Stackhouse. Take his role in Griff the Invisible (available now on DVD and Blu-Ray):

“I love working on ‘True Blood’ don’t get me wrong, but when I’m not shooting it, I try to get as far away from Jason and that world as I can. ‘Griff the Invisible’ was a challenge for me but also it was nice to experience something new. I think that everyone has this dreamer inside of them and whether they choose to embrace or suppress, I feel like it’s in there.”

And how does he think Jason fared in the recent season of True Blood? Well, he seems to think that with all of Jason’s bad luck this season, the only way he has to go is up. Which is something we all like to hear!

In true actor-style, when asked by ExtraTV about which superpower he would like to have, he replied:

“I really like the power of imagination. For me, a great superpower would be to somehow convey whatever imagination I could conjure up in my small, little head that could then transpire into real life.”

It may be this very dedication and belief in this love of acting that just may get him to the top of People’s “Sexiest Man Alive 2011” list. Especially with his new movie coming up, a supernatural thriller that is set in an airplane and entitled 7500. Things are looking up for Jason and Ryan next year, that’s for sure!

Ryan Kwanten’s “Griff the Invisible” – Finally On DVD!

October 5, 2011

Kwanten’s Sweet Superhero Griff:

Ryan Kwanten as Griff the Invisible

On Tuesday November 15th, Ryan Kwanten‘s new film Griff the Invisible will finally be available on DVD and Blu-ray.  This limited release is an off-beat indie comedy starring our favorite Bon Temps deputy as the title character.  Kwanten steps away from his role as True Blood‘s often shirtless Jason Stackhouse to play a man that lacks the confidence and sexy swagger that we are so used to seeing from him. A bored office worker by day, Griff is a man who spends most of his time and energy living in a fantasy world in which he spends his nights patrolling the streets as a superhero.

At first glance the plot sounds strangely reminiscent of previous superhero movies. In reality, what separates this film from the rest of the superhero genre is the charming romantic twist in which Griff ends up needing to be rescued. The story is more an insight into the human condition than it is an action packed adventure film and it gives us a chance to see Kwanten show his range as an actor.

Maeve Dermody co-stars as Melody, a cute daydreamer who is helplessly drawn towards Griff.  Rather than reject Griff for his disconnect from the real world, she embraces his differences.

Video: Ryan Kwanten’s New Quirky, Indie, Aussie Film

September 26, 2011

On Griff the Invisible and True Blood Season 4:

Ryan Kwanten HBO Promo S4Genevieve Loh interviewed Ryan Kwanten about his role in the new indie film Griff the Invisible and his True Blood character, Jason Stackhouse, for the Singapore-based digital news show, Today.  About the film, Kwanten said, “It was the kind of story I felt needed to be told.”  The film is Australian-written and directed, but that’s not the reason for  this sexy Aussie’s participation. “That character really felt like he represented different parts of me… I’m very much sort of an introverted heart.”  He was pleased that the humor of the film was culturally transcendent, noting that it was well-received by a German audience despite the common problems that tend to arise between languages and was hopeful that a similar opinion would form with Singaporeans.

It appears that Kwanten enjoyed working on the quirky, superhero-romance because “there’s more to play within the indie world” than the more formulaic, studio-based movies that come out of Hollywood.  “The writing is more raw,” and “I like playing sort of tortured characters.”

Beyond the scope of his new indie flick, Kwanten commented a little bit on his fourth season of True Blood.  He said that his favorite co-star to work with was Chris Bauer’s Sheriff Andy Bellefleur because, as he put it, “in real life [Chris] is a big kid in an adult body.”  Because Jason Stackhouse is well-known for his lack of thoughtfulness, the combination of the two actors together on set is quite fun, according to Kwanten.

Finally, Twitter queries about his physique arose during the interview.  After watching his copious nude and shirtless scenes over the past four seasons of True Blood, it is not surprising that the public wants to know how he stays in shape.  Other than genetic blessings, he says that he doesn’t adhere to any wild diets or have any surprising exercise tips.  He thanks a combination of running, boxing and yoga for his lick-able hipbone muscle-lines.  All in all, Kwanten is an intelligent, grounded, and ambitious individual… qualities his character on True Blood does not share, but that will probably come through in his new role in Griff the Invisible.

“Griff the Invisible’s” Maeve Dermody Dishes on True Blood’s Ryan Kwanten

March 23, 2011

Falling in Love:

Griff the Invisible's Maeve DermodyIn a recent interview with Adelaide Now, Maeve Dermody described what it was like working with Ryan Kwanten on the Australian superhero film/romantic comedy, Griff the Invisible.  In case you’ve forgotten (because it’s been so long since HBO‘s True Blood has been on the air!), Kwanten portrays Bon Temps’ famous playboy, Jason Stackhouse.

In Griff, Kwanten plays the title role, and Dermody plays his love interest.  This was actually her first romantic comedy, and she’d like to do more.  Although she wasn’t too sure about Kwanten being cast as the male lead, she quickly warmed to the idea.  She shares her initial reaction:

“I’m a huge True Blood fan and I thought, ‘Oh no, they have cast a name. It’s going to ruin it!’  But then we met and he is so much closer to Griff than he is to Jason Stackhouse.  Of course, he is also a very good actor.  But he’s an odd guy.  Brilliant.  But odd.”

Was it easy, pretending to be in love with Ryan Kwanten?  Or rather, with his character, Griff?

“From the beginning of rehearsal we fell in love with each other in a way that had nothing to do with Ryan and Maeve… It was really confusing.  We got to the end of it and we had just been through this kind of love fest and then it was time to say goodbye to Ryan.  Only it wasn’t Ryan, it was Griff.”

Dermody will be coming to Los Angeles later this year.  Although she and Kwanten send each other an occasional email, she doubts she’ll be looking to him for advice when she gets to L.A.  The same goes for her ex, fellow Aussie Sam Worthington (Avatar).  She explains:

“I don’t know that I would model myself on either of them.  There’s no one path, no classic way of doing anything.  No one was surprised – I certainly wasn’t – when Sam got Avatar, but it was also hugely lucky as well.  He manages (fame) in his own bizarre way.  And Ryan manages it in his own bizarre way.  Whatever you get thrown, you just have to deal with it with whatever grounding you have got.”

It sounds like this blonde beauty has got a good head on her shoulders.  We wish her luck in Tinseltown!
