Video: Janina Gavankar’s Wish for True Blood Season 5

October 10, 2011

Gavankar Interviewed at the 2011 Emmys:

Janina Gavankar HBO promo S4The lovely and seemingly fearless actress who plays shifter Luna Garza on HBO’s True Blood, Janina Gavankar, was interviewed by PopSugarTV at the 2011 Emmys. She admitted that before getting cast, she was not a Truebie! The horror! However, it wasn’t because she didn’t like the show — she simply had never watched it. After getting cast, she promptly devoured seasons 1-3, and obviously fell in love. Who hasn’t?

She explained what it was like to work with such a young co-star (Chloe Noelle, who plays Luna’s daughter, Emma), saying that it was both a pleasure and interesting to see how the little one learned her lines, as she was just learning to read.

So, what does Gavankar want to see during Season 5 of True Blood? Some ass-kicking, naturally. She explains quite candidly:

“I want to see the shifters kick some ass. Come on! You know, I think that Sam has a nice girl that’s going to stand by him, I want to see them join together and show people what shifters are made of.” (As she turns to the camera with a saucy look.)

Actor/comedian Chris Rock walked up during the interview to introduce himself and say he’s a fan of True Blood, which Gavankar says was the highlight of her night. Check out the full interview below:

Love for Luna: Meet One of True Blood Season 4’s New Characters

March 13, 2011

Meet and Greet with Luna

New TrueBlood cast member Janina Gavankar sat down with Inside TrueBlood to briefly dish about Luna, the schoolteacher she plays in the upcoming Season 4 of True Blood. Like all the members of the True Blood cast, she’s careful about what details she reveals.

However, we can be confident that Luna and Sam Merlotte (played by Sam Trammell) are thrown together from the start and that romance is in the air for Bon Temps favorite bar owner. As is evidenced by this clip. Gavankar reveals she’s worked mostly with Sam and that her second day of shooting was actually a night shoot in freezing cold weather. She also says Lafayette is her favorite character and that she’s Team Bill.

Says Gavankar of what fans will like about the Luna story line:

“I think they’ll enjoy watching a nice girl from outside of Bon Temps fall for Sam Merlotte. I know there are plenty of fans who would love him to find a nice girl… Luna could be that person!”

Janina Gavankar Drops Hints about True Blood’s Shape-Shifters

January 24, 2011

Gavankar Talks Shape-Shifters and Life Before True Blood

Janina GavankarDuring an interview with Accidental Sexiness the terrifically talented Janina Gavankar (Luna) talked about True Blood and her work as a musician and an actor. She also dropped some hints about the future of shape-shifters on the HBO series.

Gavankar, recently cast as shape-shifting high school teacher Luna did not think she would be an actor. In fact, she was concentrating on her musical career before she discovered acting. While she does still sing, Janina says:

“I think it’s pretty obvious that I’ve chosen acting. I make music because I have to. If I don’t, I go crazy. That’s kind of the balance, acting is the focus, music is something that just comes naturally. I do whatever is natural to me.”

You may have seen her in such shows as The L word, ABC’s The Gates, The League and Traffic Light.

Will Shape-Shifters Unite in Season Four?

We will definitely be learning more about True Blood’s shape-shifters since according to Gavankar, Sam (Sam Trammell) and Luna find a shape-shifter support group. But will something develop between Luna and Sam, the shape-shifting owner of Merlotte’s? She adores working with Sam Trammell but Gavankar plays coy:

“Luna and Sam like each other right now and that’s all I am going to say.”

Yes, she’s tight-lipped about the specifics of any relationship that might occur between her and Sam, but she also has this to say:

“I have no problem with sex scenes that move the story lines along and show the true nature of humans, as opposed to sex scenes for sex scenes. I have no problem with nudity, I don’t think there’s any problem with the human body.”

Gavankar and True Blood

Before Gavankar was cast as Luna, she hadn’t seen the HBO series. But since then she’s watched every episode and counts herself a fan.

“Now, I’m such a fan, I’m worried about, even though I know what’s happening, I’m still very worried about Lafayette, Tara is having problems, I’m very concerned about everyone even though I know where they are in the next season.”

As for the books, since the series has made some departures from author Charlaine Harris’ Southern Vampires books, Gavankar has decided to put off reading them for now so that she doesn’t end up distracted by the differences between the two.

I think we’ll all be looking forward to finding out more about Sam and Luna and True Blood’s shape-shifting community!

Sam Trammell Opens Up About the Road Ahead in Season 4

January 20, 2011

Sam Spills the Beans on Being a Shape Shifter

Sam Trammell Sam Trammell, who plays our favorite shape shifter and bar owner Sam Merlotte, recently sat down with Rosy from the blog Accidental Sexiness in an exclusive interview to talk about True Blood as well as some of the other projects Sam has been involved with over hiatus. Like the rest of the cast and crew, Trammell keeps a lid on most of the details for season four. But that didn’t stop a few tidbits from popping out it during the course of the interview.

Of his character’s evolution in the past three seasons, Sam says that Mr. Merlotte has spent a lot of time hiding who he is and what he’s been through especially in season one. But in seasons two and three fans were greeted with glimpses into the shape shifter’s past. His connection to Maryanne (Michelle Forbes) was a critical element to the main storyline in season 2. In addition, it was revealed that Sam was not comfortable with his shape shifter nature until meeting Daphne (Ashley Jones). Season three saw Sam struggle with both the emotional baggage of his past as well as meeting his biological family, with his younger brother Tommy (Marshall Allman) being a particular brand of difficult. With Tommy still in the picture, fans should expect to see Melinda (J. Cameron Smith) and Joe-Lee (Cooper Huckabee) at some point as well.

Sam and Luna

But Sam may not feel all that comfortable settling in with his own family. Instead, you’ll see him cross paths with Luna (Janina Gavankar) because:

“She’s definitely somebody that Sam can share his experiences as a shape shifter with, and she’s somebody that I’m actually trying to help out in a certain way.  I’m trying to sort of in the way that Daphne’s character tried to help me deal with my own shape shifting stuff. I’m kind of helping her a little bit. So she’s kind of, she’s somebody that Sam is able to share her experiences with.”

When pressed for further details about what kind of experiences Sam and Luna will share this season, Sam Trammell tried to be coy. But when the interviewer revealed that she had heard that Sam and Luna join a group of shifters, the actor relented saying:

“Ok it sounds like you know about this group, yes there’s this little group that she’s a part of, that I’m a part of. But I don’t know, it kind of feels, I think it’s just, I don’t know if there’s a kind of group plan to do anything together as far as group vs. society. We just kind of help each other with our problems so far.”

The group approach is nothing new in the supernatural world so perhaps this is the beginning of the shifters of the Bon Temps area gathering together like we’ve already seen the vampires and werewolves do?

Things to Know About Sam Trammell

Before he became Sam Merlotte, did you know Sam Trammell appeared on Dexter? Apparently, he played the second victim of Michael C. Hall’s character in the first season and had to be wrapped in cellophane for several hours. Now that is what I call a job!

As for what he was up to during hiatus, the actor reports that he did do some videos for Funny or Die and he shot a movie called Guns, Girls, and Gambling which is in post-production according to IMDb. But at the moment, the actor is very busy working on True Blood, telling us that scenes from three different episodes are currently being shot.

To read the rest of the interview click on the source link below. I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to see the results of Sam’s hard work in June!

A True Blood Newbie Teases her Character Over the Airwaves

January 16, 2011

Janina Gavankar Talks True Blood on LA Talk Radio

Janina Gavankar

The newest blood to join the True Blood cast is Janina Gavankar and she’s already dropping hints about Season 4. Fans will come to know Janina as Luna, the newest shifter in Bon Temps as well as her being the first Native American character on the show. She chatted with her good friend Sheena on LA’s talk radio program the Sheena Metal Experience during  the two year anniversary of her radio show.

Though she wasn’t into weres and vampires when she was a girl, Janina looks forward to reading the Sookie Stackhouse novels to see who the Luna in the books is, although she wants to create her own version of the character. The actress who is of mixed Indian and Dutch descent even enlisted the help of make up artists to changed her skin tone to add a red tone she doesn’t naturally have in order to really show the character’s Native American blood.

As with all shape-shifters and weres on the HBO series, Janina does have to get naked, but she isn’t too bothered by it. For her it’s all about the character and the fact that transforming from one vessel to another is the shape-shifter way. She does reveal that viewers will get a lot more insight and history on shape-shifters and she even gets a scene with shifter Tommy played by Marshall Allman. That’s right Truebies! When we left the season finale, Tommy’s fate was unknown, but it looks like Janina has spilled the beans and fans everywhere are relieved that she did!

All About the Music

Aside from loving her character, what else does she love about True Blood? The music, of course! Janina herself is talented singer and she, like all fans of the show, sees how much the music influences and creates the scenes we all know and love.

It seems the world of the shape shifters is expanding with Season 4 and with Janina’s dedication to creating a well developed character, the who’s better competition between vamps and shifters will be heating up.

Janina Gavankar On Her New Role As Hot Teacher, Luna

December 18, 2010

True Blood’s New Supe Drops Hints About Getting Close To ‘Sam’:

Janina GavankarJanina Gavankar recently learned that she’d won the role of shapeshifting sexy public school teacher ‘Luna‘ on HBO‘s hit show True Blood. Better, the lovely actress joins True Blood as a regular cast member so we will be seeing quite a bit of her. Gavankar couldn’t say much about being cast on True Blood though with good humor she revealed that:

‘She’s very different than I am… obviously I am not a teacher, and I can’t shapeshift”

When asked why she is taking such a seemingly unique turn in her career she answered:

“I don’t feel like it is, actually! I often play normal people with abnormal life skills and or challenges.”

Does She Think She’s Sexy?

Gavankar responded in the negative when asked if she thinks she could be defined as sexy:

Janina Gavankar in the L Word (Showtime)

‘Nope. I can look at other actors and say ’she’s sexy’ or ‘he’s sexy.’ I think it’s a lot harder for me to turn the mirror around. Many of my characters have been uber-confident, and therefore perceived as sexy. Looking back at some of them, like Ms. Dewey or Papi, I would say “Hell yeah! Those girls were sexy!” But that’s not me, that’s them.”

Asked about the True Blood upcoming season 4, Gavankar remained, as many True Blood cast members do, tight-lipped:

“All I can say is the show is going to continue to give you everything you love about it, and more.”

In response to questions about her True Blood wardrobe, she replied:

“Well, there’s not much to it at all. Shifters remove their clothes before they shift. Needless to say, I’ll be in the gym over the holidays.”

‘I Value Being Strong’:

Among others in a broad range of inquiries both serious and less so, Gavankar had this to say about staying in shape:

“I value being strong over being skinny. But my gym confession is: if I don’t have a trainer, I’m probably not going to work out. I hate it. (Laughs) I’d much rather use my energy artistically. So I change my routine often because I get bored easily. I just started boxing this week, and let me tell you, right now it hurts to sneeze (but) at least I’m not bored. (Laughs)”

Gavankar was asked about her memory of first being introduced to vampire lore as a child:

Her reply?

“Count Chocula (a monster-themed line of breakfast cereals). Best cereal ever. (Laughs) Hm, I think the first vampire lore I’d really seen was “Dracula” with Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder. I think I saw it in high school at a friend’s house, and I didn’t tell my mom. She would have never let me see things like that. I found it horrifying.”

When queried about what she loved the most about her character and being on True Blood, Gavankar shared:

‘I’ll be working with Sam Trammell a lot. I’ve marathoned the entire show and have fallen in love with his character. It’ll be nice gazing into the eyes of Sam Merlotte.’

Wow. Sounds like Janina has done her homework on the previous three seasons of True Blood and is really caught up and ready to get shifting! What do you think about the actress and the character she’ll play?
