True Blood’s ‘Yvetta’ Stands Up For Victimized Kids

Natasha Alam, True Blood's 'Yvetta' films anti bullying PSA

Actress Natasha Alam, True Blood‘s Fangtasia dancer ‘Yvetta,’ has joined a growing list of concerned celebrities who are speaking out publicly against bullying. Alam recently filmed an anti-bullying public service announcement in Los Angeles which addresses the disturbing issue.

As unlikely as it may sound, popular performers are also beginning to open up and reveal how they too have been victimized, some in the extreme.

“I was bullied so badly my dad used to have to walk me into school so I didn’t get attacked,” Jessica Alba told ‘London’s Daily Mirror’, while Michelle Trachtenberg told ‘Complex’ magazine that she actually suffered physical injuries at the hands of a bully—a girl who pushed her down a flight of stairs at school.

Statistics reinforce the personal tales of suffering at the hands of one’s peers. Sadly, bullying is widespread. According to a U.S. 2004 poll of children, 86% of more than 1,200 9- to 13-year-old boys and girls polled said they’ve seen someone else being bullied, 48% said they’ve been bullied, and 42% admitted to bullying other kids at least once in a while.

National Bullying Awareness Week in Canada

This week is National Bullying Awareness Week in Canada and as such the problem is being illuminated and addressed frankly. Young people are being encouraged to speak out about bullying and victimization and adults are urged to really listen.

In Canada, the statistics regarding bullying tell a familiar tale: One out of 4 kids are bullied, one out of 5 kids are the bully and 282,000 high school kids are attacked each month nationally. That is simply unacceptable. It is important however, to help both the victims and the bullies through emotional support compassion and education.National Bullying Awareness Week in Canada wristband

Children who are bullied often experience low self-esteem and depression, whereas those doing the bullying may go on to engage in more destructive, antisocial behaviors as teens and adults. Bullies, who often have been bullied themselves, may pick on others to feel powerful, popular, important, or in control. Often, they antagonize the same children repeatedly.

Prevention Is Possible

In filming her PSA, Alam most likely was confronted with both the sad facts of so many bullied children and the heartening  news that prevention of bullying through education and awareness is possible and that everyone can play a role.

The fact is there are no simple solutions because we first need to understand the issue of bullying more deeply. We need to be aware of practical approaches, policies, programs and resources that are effective.

With bullying and its ramifications a big topic of national conversation celebrities of every type are  joining in to send the message to anyone hurting that there are people who care and resources to help and most importantly, that victims of bullying are not alone.

True Blood Cast Members Show Their Support for Actors for Oceans Charity

November 16, 2010

Sam Trammell Co-hosts the Charity Event in Hollywood

Sam Trammell, True Blood's Sam Merlotte, hosts a charity event in Hollywood on November 13, 2010Sam Trammell, who plays shapeshifter Sam Merlotte on True Blood, is an avid surfer, swimmer, and defender of the world’s oceans. His love and respect for the water was very apparent on Saturday, November 13th, when he co-hosted an event for Actors for Oceans Charity, Project Save our Surf. Fellow True Blood cast members Michelle Forbes (Maryann Forrester) and Natasha Alam (Fangtasia dancer Yvetta) also came out to show their support.

Trammell looked very casual and relaxed before heading into the crowded event and talked about how he can see humanity’s effect on ocean life as a surfer because the water is dirty and polluted.

He also commented:

“…hopefully the more awareness and education we can raise, the more people, I think, will decide not to destroy it (the ocean).”

Trammell also gave the crowd a little taste of his musical talent when he sat down with his acoustic guitar alongside Project Save our Surf’s member Keaton Simmons.

Michelle Forbes, True Blood's Maryann Forrester, attends a charity event in Hollywood hosted by former co-star Sam TrammellTrammell’s former co-star, Michelle Forbes, has been on her own crusade to protect the environment:

“It’s important to protect our oceans, our marine wildlife, our wildlife, our land. It’s so important it’s the only world we have and my heart breaks when I think what we have done to it. It’s also important that we give up plastic bottles – no more plastic bottles! It is killing our oceans, it is killing us, as a matter of fact, so that’s something I’m really focused on these days. Looking at our water, our oil spills and the plastic involve – it’s utterly gutting, heartbreaking.”

Alam wowed the crowd in a form-fitting little black dress and gushed about how the ocean has very meditative qualities that she enjoys taking advantage of, especially by walking by the beach.

Natasha Alam From Uzbekistan To Hollywood

July 8, 2010

Not only does HBO’s hit True Blood acquire the best actors, the show even scores royalty. Natasha Alam, the newest addition to True Blood and Playboy model is also a princess.

In 1998, Natasha married former Shah of Iran’s grandson Amir Ebrahim Pahlavi Alam, granting her the royal title. Though their divorces was finalized in 2005, Natasha gets to keep the title until her ex remarries. She notes,

“I kind of forget that fact…But in situations like this (speaking to the media), I get refreshed about it…In London, being a princess was a big deal – because of the whole royal family and everything. You get reminded of that in London. I loved that feeling and experience…But I felt lonely and unfulfilled. I felt there was more to life.”

Natasha is focused fully on her acting career; she is playing Yvetta, the newest Fangtasia dancer. Whether she is on a television screen or in a print ad, the 27 year old strikes a stunning figure with her blue/gray eyes and an Amazon height of 6’2 with 4 inch heels on.

Though, Natasha isn’t simply relying on her beauty to grab acting gigs; using tapes and a voice coach, Natasha is trying to strip away her Russian accent in order to gain more acting opportunities. However, all this hard work and great opportunity on True Blood almost never happened.

When Natasha was a child, her grandmother fed her beer in order to get Natasha to gain weight. Understanding what it means to go hungry during the Nazi invasion in WWII, Natasha’s grandmother didn’t want her grandchild to suffer. However, once Natasha’s mother got wind of the situation, the beer diet ended. So rather than starting a brewery, at 17 Natasha was enrolled in the University of Technology for aviation where her major was aircraft mechanics. Natasha remarks,

“I found the Technology school boring…I think I would have been much happier if I was studying quantum physics or astronomy or something like that.”

Natasha said goodbye to her blue coveralls and opted for 100% nude pictorials in an 8 page spread, which gave her a new title: a Playboy centerfold. Before enchanting everyone on the July cover of Playboy, Natasha started modeling in Moscow only to then perform on the runways of Rome, London, Milan and New York.

There’s no doubt that Natasha enjoyed being a model but she felt like she could do more, specifically on screen. Her first acting role was a cigarette commercial in Italy. The commercial was sexy, and full of special effects, which could be why she’s so comfortable on True Blood. Aside from these performances, Natasha has also appeared on The Bold and the Beautiful, The Unit, Entourage, and NYPD Blue.

Natasha still isn’t satisfied. She is looking to expand her screen story and star in a movie, perhaps even an action movie. She does have the skills as Natasha competes in Wushu, a form of intense Chinese martial arts.

An action flick could also distance her from the stereotypical Russian characters that she dislikes. Natasha doesn’t want always want to play a mail order bride or a prostitute in Saint Petersburg. In order to avoid being type-casted, Natasha has worked hard to eradicate her Russian accent and prefers to use a more neutral accent at auditions.

For Natasha it’s all about opening her horizons, growing and learning with every job she has. She’s overjoyed to be on the cover of a legendary magazine, such as Playboy, and feels like she is living her dream. Fans may only know Natasha as Yvetta on True Blood, but it seems like the American audience will be seeing more of this talented princess.

True Blood’s Natasha Alam is Team Bill

June 19, 2010

Yvetta may be enjoying Eric‘s company quite a bit, but the actress behind her still wants to see Sookie with another man. When she was interviewed by TV Fanatic, she was asked about whether or not she liked True Blood. Of course, this new mom’s answer (she had a baby in 2009) was that she loves the show, and had actually auditioned for it several times, and was thrilled to get the part of Yvetta.

However, when asked about which team she belongs to, Natasha replied:

That’s a tough choice, but I’m kind of leaning towards Team Bill a little more.

Natasha probably just wants Yvetta to have Eric to herself!

True Blood’s Natasha Alam is Featured in Playboy

June 12, 2010

There are going to be a lot of new characters on the third season of True Blood, and actress Natasha Alam is going to be one of them. Natasha will be playing Yvetta, a new dancer at Fangtasia and a love interest for Eric Northman. But Natasha‘s work doesn’t end with being on the set of True Blood. Playboy has her featured as the July 2010 covergirl. (There will also be an 8-page pictorial feature of Natasha within the magazine.)

Of course, Natasha was also interviewed by Playboy for her feature. Apparently she was a little worried about doing nudity for True Blood but Alexander Skarsgard helped with that. According to Natasha,

“I’d never done nudity. I had to overcome a few things in my head to do it. [Then] here comes Alexander Skarsgard. He drops his robe, and he’s not wearing a sock — nothing. He’s just totally out there, walking around as if nothing’s going on. I was like, ‘If he can do it, I can do it.'”

How sweet of Alex to be so nice to the new girl on set (and lucky her)! However, Natasha adores more than just Eric Northman. She also says that she loves Pam, who she feels is really sexy and witty.

Of course, there’s more to this particular issue of Playboy than just being able to enjoy the beautiful Natasha Alam. According to Hugh Heffner, the July 2010 issue of Playboy will also have Stephen Moyer involved the 20 Questions feature.
