Nelsan Ellis Joins the cast of ‘The Stanford Prison Experiment’

October 19, 2014

The Stanford Prison Experiment is Based on an Horrific True Experiment:

Nelsan Ellis stars as Lafayette Reynolds in HBO's True BloodTrue Blood’s Nelsan Ellis (who played flamboyant Lafayette in the HBO vampire series) will join the cast of The Standford Prison Experiment alongside actress Olivia Thirlby.

Set in 1971, this true story is based on a psychological experiment conducted in which college students were sorted into ‘prisoners’ and ‘prison guards’. The results recorded shocking and sadistic behavior from these students.

IMDb lists the full movie synopsis as:

The Stanford prison experiment was ostensibly a psychological study of human responses to captivity and its behavioral effects on both authorities and inmates in prison. It was conducted in 1971 by a team of researchers led by Philip Zimbardo of Stanford University. Undergraduate volunteers played the roles of both guards and prisoners living in a mock prison in the basement of the Stanford psychology building. Within one day things got out of hand, and the “guards” used unmonitored brute force on many of the inmates. The experiment was cancelled after 6 days instead of the planned 14.

Nelsan Ellis will play a character called Jesse Fletcher, but little else is known yet about what role his character will play in this movie. Olivia Thirlby will play Christina Zimbardo, the wife of Dr. Philip Zimbardo (played by actor Billy Crudup), the man behind the experiment who would later go on to write a book on the psychology of good and evil behavior. Also starring are Ezra Miller, Michael Angarano, Tye Sheridan, James Frecheville, Johnny Simmons and Ki Hong Lee.

Sandbar Pictures and Abandon Features will finance The Stanford Prison Experiment with Tim Talbott and P.W. Hopsidor having written the script. Brent Emery will produce along with Lizzie Friedman, Greg Little, Brian Geraghty and Lauren Bratman. Kyle Patrick Alvarez will direct.

Sounds like an interesting movie. Let us know if you will be watching The Stanford Prison Experiment by commenting below!

True Blood’s Nelsan Ellis Joins ‘Bolden’ Cast

August 11, 2014

Nelsan Cast as Manager of the Bolden Band:

Nelsan Ellis True Blood LafayetteRecently we reported that True Blood’s Nelsan Ellis was appearing in the latest James Brown biopic, Get On Up. Well, it seems he has scored another music movie role, this time in the upcoming, Bolden. It follows the story of Buddy Bolden, considered by many as the father of jazz music. Nelsan will play the role of Bolden’s band manager.

The movie is directed by Dan Pritzker from a script he wrote four years ago. Some of this movie was shot back in 2010. As a result of this time delay and due to schedule conflicts, the role of Buddy Bolden has been recast. Gary Carr (of Downtown Abbey fame) will now take over from Anthony Mackie. Ian McShane has been cast as Judge Perry, Bolden’s  nemesis.

Jon Cornick and Michele Tayler will produce this movie, with Leonard Loventhal, Ed Arrendell and Wynton Marsalis are listed as executive producers. Wynton Marsalis will also compose and perform music in this new movie.

True Blood Season 7: Lafayette Gets ‘Happily Ever After’

August 10, 2014

Nelsan Ellis Confirms a Happy Ending For His Character Lafayette:

James (Nathan Parsons) and Lafayette Reynolds (Nelsan Ellis) get cosy in HBO's True Blood Season 7For fans of HBO’s True Blood, the biggest fear coming into Season 7, is which of their favorite cast members will survive to the very end. For Lafayette Reynolds fans, at least, it seems that there is a happy ending in sight for his story line. In recent episodes we saw the start of a new relationship with vampire James (played by Nathan Parsons). While Nelsan doesn’t truly confirm that Lala makes it to the very final episode of True Blood, there is confirmation of love for this flamboyant character:

He does get that happiness, and it’s a long time coming. He had to kill his last boyfriend [Kevin Alejandro]. This season for him is about redemption and taking command of his happiness… I think the relationship with Kevin’s character, [Jesus], was deeper, but I think the relationship with Nathan [Parson]’s character is more stable. I think it’s lasting. He’s in it for the long run, and you know there’s a lot of different things that will play into him being a vampire and living for how many years. But I think [with] this relationship, Lafayette is thinking, “I need to settle down. I’m done.” Lafayette used to be a prostitute, and I think he’s just like, “We love each other. Let’s just do it.” I think that they made a decision, and Bucky [showrunner Brian Buckner] was like, “We’re going to give him a happy ending” — no pun intended.

VIDEO: True Blood’s Nelsan Ellis Talks About ‘Get On Up’

August 9, 2014

From Lafayette to Bobby Byrd in the Latest James Brown Movie:

Nelsan Ellis stars as Lafayette Reynolds in HBO's True BloodNelsan Ellis may be leaving HBO’s True Blood behind but has managed to walk straight into an iconic movie part; that of playing Bobby Byrd in the James Brown biopic, Get On Up. Originally though, Nelsan auditioned for the main role of James Brown:

I originally was supposed to audition for James Brown, but it’s funny because I called Tate and I was like “I don’t know which character I like more, James Brown or Bobby Byrd.” In my heart of hearts I knew I liked Bobby Byrd more. For some reason I had a connection to him. I auditioned for James Brown. It went alright but he came back to me and said “You’re not right for James Brown, but we all agree that you look like Bobby Byrd.” They offered me Bobby. It was meant to be.

Synopsis:

A chronicle of James Brown’s rise from extreme poverty to become one of the most influential musicians in history.

Director: Tate Taylor

Writers: Jez Butterworth and John-Henry Butterworth

Stars: Chadwick Boseman, Nelsan Ellis, Dan Aykroyd

Who Does Nelsan Ellis Channel to Become True Blood’s Lafayette?

August 7, 2014

HINT: It’s a Female Singer:

Nelsan Ellis looks fabulous as Lafayette Reynolds in HBO's True Blood Season 7For many fans of HBO’s True Blood, Lafayette Reynolds is a character that is loaded with flamboyance and fabulous one liners. Each season has seen Lafayette progress from one gorgeous look to the next. Fake eyelashes, loads of gold and outrageous scarves being part of his signature look. But how does the actor, Nelsan Ellis, get his Lala on? Recently The Hollywood Reporter asked him this very question, to which he replied:

I listen to Beyonce — “Partition” please — and then I’m sitting there and I’m getting all feminine. Rihanna used to be the one, but then this season, [Beyonce’s] album is so sexual and feminine and marvelous. It gets me to that place. They put the makeup and the eyelashes on, and I listen to “Partition,” and I’m doing the switch and the hand movements, and I turn into my mama, and I turn into Lafayette.

Well, there you have it! You can watch the video clip of Beyonce’s Partition below and decide for your self whether Nelsan has indeed channeled the former Destiny’s Child singer. Just be aware that this video is the explicit version, so is not entirely safe for work 😉

COMIC CON 2014: True Blood Cast Hints at a ‘Not Happily Ever After’

July 29, 2014

Are Eric and Pam True Blood’s Version of ‘True Love’ Then?

True to the End HBO True Blood Season 7 promo posterLast weekend at San Diego’s Comic Con 2014, Zap2It got to talk to the cast of HBO’s True Blood about things such as true love and happy ends and do they exist in the Sookieverse. So how do the residents of Bon Temps and Shreveport view love in this TV series?

According to Kristin Bauer van Straten, who plays vampire Pam, she feels her character’s relationship with her maker, Eric Northman (Alexander Skarsgard) transcends the idyllic notion of true love – after all they have been together for more than a hundred years. She suggests that their love is perfect and unconditional after all their time together.

Nelsan Ellis (who plays the flamboyant Lafayette Reynolds) thinks that his character could definitely find true love. And then immediately backs it up with a ‘but we’ll have to wait and see‘ stock response. Chris Bauer (Andy Bellefleur), on the other hand, believes his character has come to forgive vampires and has had the realization that vendettas are actually pointless. Once he discovers this, he also finds out that he is no longer alone in this word any more.

As for Carrie Preston (Arlene Fowler-Bellefleur) and Anna Camp (who plays god-shopper and resident baddie, Sarah Newlin), both women agree that Arlene could possibly be the only person who could talk some sense into Sarah. But apparently the pair never get a scene together, so it is a moot point. Although, this would indicate that Sarah Newlin’s story line could be held entirely in Dallas for this final season. And what a shame too, that is one southern scrag fight I would have loved to see!

Stephen Moyer’s (who plays vampire Bill Compton who is currently suffering from an accelerated dose of Hep-V) words are possibly the most telling though. When asked about whether there will be a happy ending for anyone in True Blood Season 7, his reply was:

I’m not sure that’s how Alan Ball conceived things. Even though Alan’s not running the show any more, happily ever after is something that we have always known on our show that as soon as something good happens to a character, something bad is about to happen. So, do you ever know? Are they ever happy? I don’t know.
