Pre-Order Anna Paquin’s ‘The Romantics’

January 13, 2011

Released on DVD February 8, 2011

The RomanticsWe all know True Blood’s Anna Paquin does a fantastic job on the HBO hit show, but now you can see her in a different role.  Her film The Romantics co-starring Josh Duhamel and Katie Holmes, has Paquin showing us her frosty side.  The film centers around a group of seven friends who come together for Paquin and Duhamel’s wedding.  Problems arise due to the fact that Holmes’ character is still in love with the groom.  One reviewer had this to say about her performance.

“Easily walking away with the film, Anna Paquin’s entitled bitch queen of a bride. Although she may be the ostensible villain, her aggression makes her sympathetic compared to the sulky shells around her; when she pussy whips the pre-wedding jitters out of Duhamel, we only wish she’d tear into the rest of the cast as well.”

The movie officially releases on DVD February 8, 2011 but you can pre-order it by clicking here.  Below is the trailer for the movie.  Let us know if you have seen the movie or if you plan to!

Anna Paquin Stands Out in All-Star Cast of The Romantics

September 19, 2010

Anna Paquin, True Blood, Sookie Stackhouse, The RomanticsIn The Romantics, Anna Paquin plays a role about as different from True Blood’s Sookie Stackhouse as she could possibly get. She’s a bride-to-be, engaged to the handsome Josh Duhamel, who’s struggling with feelings for his ex, played by Katie Holmes, who just so happens to be the maid of honor. The cast also includes Adam Brody, Malin Akerman, Elijah Wood, and Dianna Agron.

Feedback on the film overall has been mostly negative. Over at TinyMixTapes.com, the reviewer writes that the backstory of these college friends who reunite for a wedding weekend of two of their own is never established. Instead, viewers are left with “remarkably banal conversations about which archetype each character represents and silent-save-for-soundtrack walks on the beach.”

Lest this discourage you from seeing the film, it has also gotten praise, such as this from the critic at the New York Post:

“With its tart dialogue and its perfect ending, it is sensitive as well as sagacious. It’s a rare combination.”

All this to say, it’s a matter of opinion. And even the bad report above goes on to praise one cast member in particular:

“Easily walking away with the film, Anna Paquin’s entitled bitch queen of a bride. Although she may be the ostensible villain, her aggression makes her sympathetic compared to the sulky shells around her; when she pussy whips the pre-wedding jitters out of Duhamel, we only wish she’d tear into the rest of the cast as well.”

So maybe that description isn’t totally foreign to Anna’s work on True Blood–we saw Sookie full of attitude in the latter half of Season 3! That might be reason enough for Truebies who are dying for a fix to go see it. The Romantics is currently playing in select US theaters.

Anna Paquin Talks About True Blood, The Romantics & Weddings

September 5, 2010

Anna Paquin as Sookie Stackhouse in True BloodThough the current season of True Blood ends on September 12, we’ll still be able to see Anna Paquin in other works of hers, including one where she dons a wedding dress.

Anna’s upcoming project, The Romantics, is set to be released later this year and in it, she plays Lila, a young bride to be. Lila’s and her fiance’s friends from college come to the wedding, and of course a lot of mayhem ensues.

When Anna described Lila, she described her as very controlling and said that Lila wants what she wants. Lila is very different from both Sookie Stackhouse and Anna herself.

That’s one of the reasons that Anna isn’t worried about typecasting. She deliberately chooses characters to portray who are different. Anna also said,

“I don’t suffer from being one of those people who’s so exceptionally — how do I put this nicely — model-like looking that my face will look exactly the same no matter how you dress me. I find that pretty easily if you restyle it, I look different.”

Anna’s abilities to change her appearance in small, simple ways also helps to create the contrast between the characters she’s played. It also has given her the chance to really discover her own boundaries and how they differ from the boundaries her characters have.

Anna admits to not having many boundaries as an actress because she knows that at the end of the day, she’s just playing someone other than herself. When the day’s work is done and the costumes and makeup are off, Anna can just be herself rather than a sassy waitress who happens to be telepathic or a bride-to-be who stole her groom from her best friend.

Anna Paquin’s Film The Romantics Reviewed from Sundance

January 29, 2010

An early version of Anna Paquin’s upcoming wedding dramedy, The Romantics, was screened at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah earlier this week. A critic for USA Today says that the movie “has potential to be one of the festival’s breakouts.” The Romantics tells the story of a group of college friends who come together for the marriage of two of their own. All the usual shenanigans ensue, from drunken toasts to surprising hook ups.

Aside from Anna as bride-to-be Lila, the cast includes Katie Holmes as the maid of honor who was once involved with, and still has feelings for, the groom-to-be, played by Josh Duhamel. Their friends are played by Malin Akerman, Adam Brody, Jeremy Strong, and Rebecca Lawrence. Dianna Agron and Elijah Wood play Lila’s sister and brother. When interviewed, the actors have praised the project for being funny and real. They think that people will be able to enjoy it and relate to the characters.

One reviewer from the Hollywood Reporter singles out Anna in particular for bringing a spark of life to her role that makes her stand out from the others, although The Romantics is mainly about the journey of Katie Holmes’ Laura. The film is based on a novel by Galt Niederhoffer, who adapted the screenplay as well as directed.

When people viewed it at Sundance, the post-production was not quite finished. The music score has yet to be added, and Niederhoffer mentioned that she would be making a few more changes. There is no US release date as of yet.

People have said such great things about Anna’s performance, it will be great to see her in this whenever it does come out!

Anna Paquin’s “The Romantics” at the Sundance Film Festival

January 22, 2010

Anna Paquin‘s new movie, The Romantics, is going to be screened at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. During the break from filming True Blood, Anna was a very busy woman, working in New York on The Romantics, which is the story of a bunch of twenty-somethings who all went to Yale together, and are now joining up again for the wedding of two members of the group.

This indie film is being shown at the Sundance Film Festival, which is the largest independent film festival in the United States, takes place in Utah every year, and has done so since 1978, when it was founded by Sterling Van Wagenen. Nowadays, the Sundance Film Festival is well known for having the support of Robert Redford, and the “Focus on Film” campaign, which was started in 2007.

The Romantics, which stars Katie Holmes and Josh Duhamel alongside Anna and several others, has four screenings at the Sundance Film Festival, and three of them are already waitlist only.

The Romantics is also very unique as an indie film being shown at the Sundance Film Festival. The movie was filmed in November 2009 and only had a few weeks to edit and put the movie together. This is not something common in the film industry, where it often takes years to get a project greenlighted, the roles cast, the actual filming, pre- and post-production, etc. However, considering that the woman behind this movie also wrote the book it’s based on, this may not be a bad thing, as she has a clear view of what she wants from the movie, which can help speed the process of film making.

Obviously, The Romantics already has been noticed by many people, and it will be great to hear what people think of the movie once more of them have seen it!

Anna Paquin Film The Romantics Selected for Sundance Film Festival

December 16, 2009

fe73b449e7fe4552_romanticsAnna Paquin’s upcoming film, The Romantics, seems like good practice for real life! As she thinks about what she might want for her own wedding to True Blood costar and fiance, Stephen Moyer, she portrayed a character preparing for her wedding.

The movie, which is being compared to the 1983 Kevin Kline film, The Big Chill, tells the story of a group of college friends who are reunited for a weekend to celebrate the marriage of Lila and Tom, played by Anna and Josh Duhamel. However, old feelings reemerge between the groom and the maid of honor, Laura (Katie Holmes). Also starring in the film are Elijah Wood, Adam Brody, Malin Akerman, and Candice Bergen. Anna and the rest of the cast seemed to have really enjoyed themselves while filming seaside in Southold, NY.

The Romantics has been selected for the 2010 Sundance Film Festival, one of the most important cinematic events of the year when critics and people from the entertainment industry gather for ten days to watch and talk about movies. Small, independent films get the chance to make an impression before awards season, and new talent is often discovered.

The festival takes place from January 21-31, 2010, in Park City, Utah. This year, 200 films were chosen for exhibition from more than 9,000 submissions. The program offers dramatic films, documentaries, and short films, as well as panel discussions with the filmmakers and actors.

The Romantics, which was written and directed by Galt Niederhoffer, will be one of 14 films screened at Peery’s Egyptian Theater. It is scheduled for 9:30pm MST on January 30. There is no general US release date scheduled at this point.

Anna Paquin in Long Island for The Romantics

November 7, 2009

Anna PaquinAnna Paquin (True Blood HBO‘s telepathic waitress Sookie Stackhouse) is in the North Fork area of Long Island filming her new project, the independant film The Romantics, with costars Katie Holmes, Elijah Wood, and Josh Duhamel. Filming in the area will continue into early December, so Anna will be busy right up until True Blood begins filming Season 3.

The production company, Plum Pictures, describes the film as “a zeitgeist love story and generational comedy, taking place over the course of one night at a deluxe seaside wedding” in which “seven close friends — all members of a tight, eclectic college clique — reconvene to watch two of their own tie the knot.”

Anna plays Lila, the bride-to-be, while maid of honor Laura will be played by Katie Holmes.  The film centers on a love triangle between the groom, Tom, played by Josh Duhamel, and Laura and Lia who have both been involved with and fought over him for years.  Director Galt Niederhoffer adapted the screenplay from her novel of the same name.

The Romantics is due for release in 2010.
