True Blood’s Denis O’Hare to Attend Hare & Tortoise Run

September 4, 2010 by

Denis O'Hare, True Blood, Russell EdgingtonBack in our interview with Denis O’Hare, the actor who has captivated us all in Season 3 as Russell Edgington mentioned a few charities close to his heart. One of these is the Hare & Tortoise 8K Run/Walk, an annual event he participates in, in memory of his mother, who passed away in 2008 of ovarian cancer. This year’s run will take place next Saturday, September 11, 2010, in Williamsburg, VA.

The foundation organizing the event is the Karene O’Hare Ovarian Cancer Memorial Run. It was started by Denis’ father, John O’Hare, to fund an education program about ovarian cancer and to help finance medical testing for women in the greater Williamsburg area. The sad truth about ovarian cancer is that it is difficult to detect in its early stages. 20,000 women in America are diagnosed each year, but 75% of these cases are diagnosed too late after the cancer has spread beyond the ovary. There are, however, early symptoms that, if recognized, could help change these statistics and drastically improve the chances of women affected by this disease. Money raised by the Karene O’Hare Ovarian Cancer Memorial Run will help raise awareness to that end.

To register for the run next weekend, visit hareandtortoiserun.com. There will be special prize giveaways, including a True Blood pack with the Season 1 & 2 DVDs and an autographed script. You will also see the Vampire King of Mississippi himself, as Denis will be there participating in the event. But more importantly, your involvement will raise money to help more women have a fighting chance against ovarian cancer. You don’t have to be registered to help out–you can also make a PayPal donation here.
