True Blood Season 2: Episode 9 – “I Will Rise Up”

August 18, 2009 by

Hoytt: New Honey of VampiresAfter a suicide bomber obliterates the Vampire party, Eric takes advantage of Sookie’s kindness and sucks her into his web of deception. After Sookie swallows some of Eric’s blood, she starts to see him in a new, sexier light. In a dreamscape, Eric shows that he does have a softer side.

Sookie and Jason reflect on the past, covering old wounds that seem finally able to heal. Jason admits that he still has not dealt with their grandmothers death and after realizing that the siblings are the only surviving members of the Stackhouse family, resolves to do things right from here on in.

Lafayette and Lettie Mae storm Sookie’s house in an attempt to save Tara from Maryann’s influence. The move was spawned from an earlier visit to Merlotte’s where Lafayette attributes his cousins facial bruises to Egg’s hand. Tara is carted away from Sookies house while putting up possessed resistance

Hoyt introduces his mother to Jessica in a dinner meeting that ends up in bloodied tears due to the harsh words of Maxine. Bon Temps jail is filled to capacity with people who have been picked up due to misdemeanors and upon learning that Sam has flown the coop Maryann lets every last reprimanded person free.

In Dallas, Eric and Godric deal with the PR backlash of the bombing and recent events with Nan Flanagan. Godric chooses to take the fall and step down as Sheriff, and decides to meet the sun as Sookie stays by his side as a favor to Eric.

Top 5 of I Will Rise Up

  2. Eric in Sookie’s dream state, there seemed to be a little bit of chemistry between those two characters. As Bill fades into a shadow of what he used to be in season one, maybe this would spice things up.
  3. Bill explaining that since Sookie has some of Eric’s blood in her, then she would experience a sexual attraction to him. Is this why she is attracted to Bill?
  4. Godric‘s parting scene. Some amazing dynamics between Godric and Eric helped make the whole scene work well. Each episode we are shown some top dramatic performances.
  5. Tara being taken from Sookie‘s house. This makes me interested in finding out what is going to happen when Sookie returns to her house being taken over by Maryann. I would say that due to us having three more episodes to go- this leaves room for it to get U.G.L.Y.

Make sure you tell us your top 5’s in the feedback below!

[Editor’s Note: Or.. if you’re the editor you get to sneak them in here!]

  2. No Maso/Sadi/Anarchy Sex at all.  I don’t mean to sound like a prude but man that was such an awful scene between Tara and Eggs last week!
  3. Hoyt tellin’ his mama off.  He’s a grown assed man, Maxine! It was a long.. time comin’.. someone cue Sam Cooke!  The casting department of this show just rocks, every time attention turns to someone who was a minor character last season they rise to the occasion.  Jim Parrack is rockin my world this season.  Warm, sensitive and strong. (Do I need to even say how much I love Jessica???)
  4. Lafayette and Lettie Mae staging an intervention.  You go, girlfriends!  I swear Lafayette has more courage than can fit into one human body, even one as sexy as his.  He KNOWS true horror but he still ‘mans up’ every single time (and I use that phrase “mans up” in a totally omnisexual sense.)
  5. Everything Eric this episode, Alexander did a superb job. He looked like he was faking when he was supposed to without looking campy, he looked sexy in bed (even if he is too darn tall 😉 ), he looked like his heart was ripped out when Godric went to meet the sun.   I’m sure the Eric/Sookie Shippers are happy.  Although I didn’t have the same take as Dan, I thought that Sookie imagined Eric having a softer side not that he actually DOES have one.  Although it’s not technically one scene, kudos to Mr. Skarsgard.

Special all time favorite top five scene: Godric meeting the sun.  It was simple, it was elegant, it was horrible and beautiful and somehow just perfect.  I loved Godric but it was the right decision to let him meet the sun.  How long could such pathos go on without wearing thin?  Kudos to the FX guys, the lighting department, the camera men, the location scouts, the film editors, the writers, the director, the casting department, the actors and most of all Alan Ball for making the right call.  It’s right up there second only to the pie scene for tear jerker and 3rd favorite overall (Sookie‘s run through the cemetery to Bill is my all time favorite scene!).

Scene that peeved me this week:  Each week there seems to be one scene that gets under my skin.  Sometimes, it’s unnecessary explicitness, sometimes it’s a small plot hole, this week it was Sookie sucking the silver, and blood, out of Eric‘s chest.  I understand they needed a plot device to connect Sookie to Eric to test the bond between Sookie and Bill.  The problem I have is that I HATE it when women are written as dumb as an ox, sister to Jason or not, blond or not. Seriously, not only should you be suspicious that Eric is faking when Bill walks away and leaves him there, and when Godric isn’t hovering over him to be sure he’s OK, but was anyone else sucking the silver out of other vampires anywhere in the room?  Many of them had their humans there.. yet you’re the only one SUCKING the silver out?  Why wouldn’t you just dig it out with your finger?  I mean, come on..!  Has that ‘a snake bit my penis and I’m going to die if you don’t suck the poison out’ line ever worked in the history of humans, of primates? Not EVEN if you see the dead snake laying in the room.

And the worst part is, it wasn’t necessary to make Sookie this incredibly stupid.  She could have quite simply gotten some of his blood in her mouth as he protected her from flying silver during the explosion.  Or maybe have Eric even ‘wipe her mouth’ while she’s still stunned with a bloody hand if you want him to be a devious rat.  It makes it very hard for me to care what happens to Sookie when she’s this stupid.  Just like I have found it hard to care what happens to Jason half the time.

Despite that rant, I have to say this was my second favorite episode this season for all the other reasons listed.  I dreaded the episode ending and it went for too fast and was too darn short!  And now I’m torn between, “Is it Sunday yet?” and OMGodric it’s almost the end of the season!

I now return control of the horizontal and the vertical, sorry for the rant.  Awaiting your comments below!

    1. The rooftop scene with Godric, Eric and Sookie – just heartbreaking.
    2. The dream sequence – it’s probably how Sookie would hope Eric would be if they were together
    3. Lafayette rescuing Tara – he’s got his mojo back
    4. Hoyt standing up to Maxine – what a biyotch she is.
    5. Jessica and Hoyt walking away from Maxine at Merlottes – good for them.

I think Sookie is taking far too much flak for the bullet-sucking thing and I’m not even that fond of the character.Sure, she knows that silver hurts vamps and that they heal themselves but how would she have known about the bullet coming out on its own? She’s never seen it before.

Frankly I think it’s Bill’s fault for provoking Eric earlier, tellin him that he was powerless in getting closer to Sookie. Guess Eric showed him how “powerless” he really was!!

  • Aaine

What really stuck out for me with the Sookie dream sequence was the contrast with the dreams she had about Bill.

In the Bill dreams the atmosphere was dark and threatening, Bill was all fangy etc. Eric dream, the atmosphere was lighter, the interaction between them playful and like equals (a much appreciated nod to the books!) and most interesting, Eric had no fangs. Even when they were kissing, he didn’t pop fang.

I never liked the way Bill acts like Sookie’s father all the time, their relationship never seems equal to me. Where with Eric, there isn’t that and it was really obvious in that dream scene.

Loved the final scene as well, it was just perfect. I hope both of them are nommed for an emmy. I cried my eyes out and this scene was SO needed to soften Eric’s character a bit for both Sookie and for us.

  • Nathan

Ahh but she was dramn to Bill as he was the first Vampire she had ever seen in Merlottes, or even in real life!

  • Sandra

Though I think that Bill’s blood increased her attraction for him, she was already drawn to him when he walked into the restaurant. Interesting that her first dream about Bill was kind of negative, with him showing his teeth and saying, “who said anything about sex?” But, her first dream about Eric was playful and sexy.

  • Sandra

I absolutely agree that Sookie sucking the silver out of Eric’s body seemed pretty weak. But, given how strong the writing is on this show, it might be more of a clue about Sookie’s character. She really likes playing the heroine. I think Bill allowed himself to be captured by the Rattrees so that she could save him. When she was reading their minds, Bill was staring at Sookie, as if he knew what she was doing. She tells him not to go, but then he goes anyway. It might have been a dangerous gamble, but it sure got Sookie’s attention and seemed to feed her desire to do something heroic. I think that Eric was playing the same ‘card’ when he asked her for help to find Godric and then asked her to save him.

    • cgpunker

Hmmm. Sandra. I like your analysis of the situation.
I never bought Sookie as totally dumb – just as I don’t buy her “hatred” of Eric. It may be subconcious on her part, but she does like playing the heroine, and it would be an easy way for both vampires to play her.

  • I hate Maryann more & more w/each episode, she’s nothing but a big, walking, talking, living, breathing turd.

I just can’t believe Sookie is that stupid to fall for Eric’s manipulation. She knows vampires restore themselves. She saw it happen to Bill after the crackheads laid him out w/silver to drain his blood. She knows a wooden stake is what kills them, not silver. It just makes me think that she is secretly attracted to Eric, (who wouldn’t be?) & it’s just not something she would share w/anyone, EVER.

I’m not buying this “Eric falling for Sookie” business. I’m convinced Eric is playing her because #1 he’s had 1,000 years experience of being a lady’s man (as we heard just before Godric turned him), #2 she’s a telepath, which is rare & maybe she’s the first he’s ever met, which would be a real conquest for him, #3 I can tell he’s a player…he’s a club owner who dresses like a douche, (sorry, but he does, & I STILL like him) & I’m sure that for most of his human & vampire life combined, he has had no problem getting almost any woman he has ever wanted…making this Sookie thing a fun sort of game for him.

I cried @ the end, for Godric, & for Eric. I cried because Godric seemed to have no place on this earth anymore, being the “cause” of the vampires & humans deaths as a result of Luke’s suicide bomb in his house. He knew that if he had just listened to Stan (who I already miss), that none of that would have ever happened. It’s like, the human world had no place for him, the vampire world had no place for him…so he just left.

I don’t care what kind of mess Lafayette has ever been involved in, he is a truly loving man. Did I mention how big of a turd Maryann is?

I actually thought this episode sucked – hated the Eric scenes and what he did to Sookie and my poor Bill! He is always getting the raw end of the deal and he looked so sad when looking out of the window. I can still see the reflection of his face. Not quite sure where AB is heading, but I think I will be ff a lot in future to cut out the Eric scenes with Sookie and Bill’s pained face. I agree with your comments – bring back season 1 Bill before it is too late!!

  • Raven

Best episode so far this season. My top 5:
    1. Eric with Godric on the roof. I cried.
    2. Lafayette gettin’ all bad*ss on Eggs and rescuing Tara.
    3. Eric’s face when Sookie was sucking the bullet out. What a naughty boy!
    4. Sookie and Jason’s talk, so touching.
    5. Eric’s smokin’ hot body naked!

  • my top 5.

    1. Eric’s devious smile as Sookie sucked out the second bullet.

    2. Very Little MaryAnn 🙂

    3. Sookies Dream of Eric

    4. Hoyt telling his mom that “I’m a grown a$$ man!”

    5. at the end When Sookie wanted to find Godric,The look on Bill’s face when Sookie told him “its doesn’t make any sense ,I just have to be there…can’t you understand?”

    • i love it
and that part…”Eric’s face when Sookie was sucking the bullet out”. Priceless!

      erotic i love it
more sex, more violent sex vampire love

      oooooh i love this show

and i cried too, Eric with Godric on the roof.

finally something to see on tv that i like!

  • cgpunker

What an amazing episode. Top 5 is hard because I thought all of the Eric scenes were pure gold, as was the Lafayette/Eggs scene.

    My top 5:

    * Eric’s bad acting at Godric’s. “I’m..dying…” He really over sold it. And it cracked me up.

    * Lafayette kickin Eggs’ butt (vampire blood anyone?) and getting Tara out of there

    * Hoyt. My sweet Hoyt.

    * “This is the beginning.” You bet it is Viking.

    * The entire rooftop scene, from Eric & Godric right through to the end. It was beautifully written, acted and shot.

  • The scene between sookie and Eric was one of my faves for this season. I love that she is getting herself… or was forced to now quietly choose between Bill and Eric. But I think the maing reason I liked it was because of anna and Stephen’s real off screen romance. It made me giggle wondering if he was out of camera shot fists clenched waiting to wrap a towel or something around her 🙂

I am getting kinda sick of the Sam/ Maryanne storyline, its been going on for so long, the same things over and over yet its going nowhere. I mean I curious to see whats actually going to happen with them but I don’t like it being dragged out like this.

Finally I just wanted agree with everyone’s Hoyt standing up to his mom thing, its about damn time, AND he took the grilled cheese/chips. He and Jessica are so cute together.

I’m thinking that “god” and/or Maryann as she is better known, is going to be the Season Two kicker. I heard Bill say he had no power against her, or something to that effect. Also, what’s up with Godric having been a vampire for so long that he no longer feels like one? Is that a valid reason for vampire suicide?

Having written a vampire novel myself, not published yet, I didn’t think I was gonna enjoy Trueblood. However, the series has managed to seduce me into becoming a steadfast viewer.

  • georgiamagpie

I just looove Lafayette! His swearing at Eggs was awesome! I like the fact that he has stayed the same throughout the series. It is good to have characters develop and the viewers’ attitude changing towards them (and this has been the case with most of the characters), but I find it essential that there is also some stability somehow. And Lafayette is one of those characters whose (only minor) changes have not affected my liking him, quite the opposite.

I truley loved this episode erics beautiful body my heart just broke for eric and then godrick giving up on life and sookie staing by his side until the end ,god bless her for that she is a very loving person.I just can’t wait to see maryannes demise maybe by jason.

  • BLF

I think the last few minutes of this episode overwhelms my views of the first 40 some minutes before hand. It was brilliant, and if I saw in an article correctly primarily shot in one take to capture the lighting. Brilliant, raw emotion… Alex, Anna, and Allan all brilliant in this scene (though it is ironic that the 3 actors in this scene names all start with the letter A). It always tough to handle a suicide scene… and came of superbly.

As a book reader, I was chuckling when Eric manipulates Sookie into the blood exchange (yes, I have read the comments that some liken this to mind rape… have faith in our girl) as it was just so Eric to take advantage of an unplanned situation that will promote his own agenda. As Bill states later on Eric has had 1000 years to to polish his tactic in deceit and this is a powerplay, but Sookie is also the one who can’t be glamoured into doing anything.

I loved the scenes where Lafayette was getting protective of Tara! She needs it as well!

Hoyt standing up to his mama, need I say more 🙂

The dreamscene while i enjoyed it, actually drove me crazy with some of the editing ( i might be nitpicky on this)

All in all, I have loved this series this i joined the bandwagon! I dont want it to end but am ready for season 3 as well!

Thank you Mr Ball for bringing Mrs Harris’ stories to the small screen!
