Audrey Fisher Spills on Those Republic**t Costumes:
For HBO’s costume designer, Audrey Fisher, it is always a challenge to find just the right costumes for a show like True Blood. But she must be doing something right as fans and cast alike have continuously raved about her costume choices. For the record, she states that for each episode, her main focus is:
Try to get costumes that definitely were a big wink, but that weren’t too comical.
As for last week’s episode (entitled Lost Cause), there were certainly some extra challenges with making Pam (Kristin Bauer van Straten) and Eric Northman (Alexander Skarsgard) just the right blend of republicomical:
I had to make at least doubles of it, maybe even triples. I sketched it up. We found a great fabric that we could get enough of, because he’s a tall man—it’s a lot of yardage, more than just the average suit. And a wonderful tailor in Koreatown whipped up these beautiful suits that fit like a glove and have really beautiful Western detailing. We topped it off with not a 10-gallon hat—that would be too comical—but a really beautiful Western hat.
As for Pam’s matching ‘republic**t’ costume, her task was a little simpler. Writer Craig Chester had already penned in a purple sequined gown as port of the scene requirement, so while Audrey didn’t have to design something from scratch, she did have to find the dress quickly. She found the near perfect gown and with a few minor alterations, had the perfect dress for Pam ready to go:
So his outfit I got to custom make, and her outfit I had to piece together a little more. That’s pretty typical of True Blood. Sometimes I’m able to make it from soup to nuts, and other times, I have to use all my wits to figure out a way to pull it off in 48 hours.
As for one of the other costumes used during the republican gala event, Sarah Newlin’s (Anna Camp) mother, Nancy Crabtree, was supposed to wear a red suit. However, due to the amount of blood shed in that scene, her outfit was changed to a pale pink suit so that the blood spray would show up better.
And, as for all those 80’s flashbacks, Audrey looked to Richard Gere in American Gigolo as inspiration for Eric Northman’s outfits!
