Inside True Blood Season Four: The Tone Meeting

Producing True Blood: Step One

true blood logoHave you ever wondered what goes in to producing an episode of True Blood? The short answer would be a lot! But writer behind the Inside True Blood blog has decided to answer that particular question in a series of postings with the first one being about the tone meeting.

In the context of a play, a book, or a television show such as True Blood the tone generally refers to the style of that work or in this case television show. In True Blood, a tone meeting is the first step in the production process for show creator Alan Ball, executive producer Greg Feinberg, the director for the episode, and the cinematographer to all sit down together for the first time and go through the episode at hand.

This is important to do because in going through the episode they discuss issues of tone and style of the show, especially directors that are new to working with the show. This helps ensure that everyone is on the same page about the episode and that it fits within the whole rest of the season. For example, if  Eric (Alexander Skarsgård) and Bill (Stephen Moyer) suddenly became the best of friends in an episode when the audience knows that they’re had their share of issues for three seasons, that would look strange now wouldn’t it?

So that is why the tone meeting is the first step in the production process.

Are you interested to know what goes on behind the scenes of True Blood? What do you think are some of the other steps to producing the show? Tell us in the comment section below!

Michael McMillian Guest Starring on Hot in Cleveland

McMillian to Play Long Lost Son

michael-mcmillianTruebies may know Michael McMillian best for his role as Rev. Steve Newlin on True Blood and more recently as a co-writer of the True Blood comic book series. But this summer, he may be heading to Cleveland–at least on television. The multi-talented McMillian has been reportedly cast in the TV Land original comedy, Hot in Cleveland.

TV Line’s Matt Mitovich wrote in an exclusive report that the actor will be playing the long lost son of Joy. The character, played by actress Jane Leeves, gave her son up for adoption when she was 15. Michael’s appearance on the show will make the first time the character has been seen on the show, however he has been heard from. He apparently sent his would-be mother Joy a message that she was unable to return in the show’s first season finale because of a tornado. So when the two finally do meet, expect it to be nothing short of great.

Michael McMillian’s episode is supposed to air on June 22.

What do you think of this new role? Will you watch Michael on Hot in Cleveland? Speak up and let me know in the comment section below!

Season 4 Spoiler Alert: Everyone’s Favorite Maker Returns

Godric to Come Back in Season 4

AHyde GodricMichael Ausiello of TV Line has just learned that Godric played by the wonderful Allan Hyde will be returning in Season 4!  You may recall that we did see Godric at the end of season three, where he appeared as an apparition of sorts to his troubled progeny Eric (Alexander Skarsgård). Of the return, Ausiello had this to say:

True Blood EP Alan Ball isn’t offering too many clues, except to say that fans will see “a different side of Godric.”

A different side huh? I wonder what that could mean? More flashbacks perhaps?  There is no word on the specifics of Allan Hyde’s return in terms of when it will occur in the season or for how long.

But stay tuned Truebies; TBN will have any and all information if and when it is released! So what do you think Godric will be up to this season? Tell us in the comments section below!

Kevin Alejandro Reveals How He Shapes Up for True Blood and Talks Season 4

All About the Work Out

Kevin AlejandroThe men of True Blood have a certain standard; gorgeous, fit, and easy on the eyes. Kevin Alejandro (Jesus Velasquez) is already gorgeous and easy on the eyes but he’s taking extra steps to stay fit for season 4. Of course it helps to have a little incentive too. Kevin recently spoke to Access Hollywood and he told them that there is pressure to get into shape, especially when you have to share the screen with someone like Ryan Kwanten (Jason Stackhouse). But it does help to be in the same boat together right?

All of the men on True Blood whether witch, human, shape shifter, werewolf, or vampire have had to bare some skin if not more during the course of the show. In fact Alejandro revealed that he and several other cast members have been doing workouts together from time to time. It’s nice to know that the cast supports each other like that!

It also helps to have a supportive environment as well. When asked about getting naked, the actor stated that he would be very comfortable doing so because everyone on set is very professional and when it’s time for the scene only the people who need to be there are there.

What’s Coming in Season 4?

Of course, Kevin couldn’t get away with just talking about staying in shape. With season 4 of True Blood coming up very soon, Access Hollywood couldn’t resist asking about what’s to come for Jesus. Especially now that he’s with fan favorite Lafayette played by Nelsan Ellis. Of their relationship, he says:

“My relationship [will grow] with not only him but other characters in show as well. They are really moving us around and balancing it out in all these crazy, strange ways and it works, man. It works really well this year.”

Jesus will certainly have no shortage of interactions this year seeing as he is a witch!  But besides True Blood, the actor has been busy working on a new film entitled “Red State” by director Kevin Smith. The film is slated to debut October 19th.

So mark your calendars and be sure to catch Kevin this June in True Blood!

Charlaine Harris Says Sookie Stackhouse Series Will End

Now Leaving Bon Temps

Dead ReckoningThe book series that started it all, the Southern Vampire Mysteries, will be coming to an end after two additional books. The next addition to the series, Dead Reckoning is due out in May.

Sookie Stackhouse’s creator Charlaine Harris expressed to the LA Times Blog, Hero Complex that she is ready to write something else. Since HBO began airing True Blood two years ago Harris has had little time to focus on other projects due to publicity engagements related to the vampire show.

Worlds Beyond Sookie

But fear not fans of Charlaine’s work! Just because she’s ready to leave Bon Temps in the world of fiction doesn’t mean she’s ready to give up the vampires. Another female vampire by the name of Dahlia Lynley-Chivers has recently come into the spotlight. Having originally appeared in some of Harris’ short stories, Dahlia is now the star of her own game entitled Dying for Daylight which is now available on iPlay.com. The game centers on her quest to find the secret of how her kind can walk in the sunlight and how she has to search all over New Orleans to find it. To those Truebies who have seen season three of True Blood in its entirety, the premise may sound familiar.

Computer games aren’t the only things Harris’ characters are appearing in. IDW released the True Blood comic series last year and a volume of the first six issues came out this past week. Harper Connelly, another one of Charlaine’s heroines will also be brought into the comic fold and in addition CBS is looking into giving the character her own TV series.

On True Blood

Speaking of TV series, how does Charlaine feel about True Blood? While she did admit to being a bit overwhelmed by the show’s sometimes graphic (and sexual) nature she is proud of the series and the actors:

“I think all the actors are very fun,” she said. “I think Alan’s genius lies in picking the right person for the right role. They’re all talented and doing a great job. There are some plot lines that have surprised me, but I know that they know where they’re going — I just don’t know because it’s not where I went. So I can only wait to see what’s going to develop.”

Well Charlaine we can’t wait to see what your next project will be and like you we’re also excited to see where True Blood goes next!

Michael McMillian Discusses the True Blood Comic Series on the Inside True Blood Blog

From Actor to Comic Book Writer

michael_mcmillian as steve newlinGianna Sobol, writer of the Inside True Blood Blog and assistant to True Blood creator Alan Ball, recently interviewed Michael McMillian who is best known to Trubies as Rev. Steve Newlin from seasons two and three.  But when he’s not acting Michael is a writer of comic books like his own series Lucid. What fans may not realize however is that he is a co-writer of the True Blood comic book series! He recently sat down with Sobol to discuss the comics and give a bit more insight into the world of True Blood that we haven’t seen on television.

The storyline McMillian wrote for this series of True Blood comics is entitled “Tainted Love” and tells the story of what happens when a vampire terrorist group known as the Vampire Liberation Front puts something in bottles of tru blood that makes vampires lose all morality. Jessica Hamby (Deborah Ann Woll) is one of the unfortunate vampires who drank a bottle and all hell breaks loose!

When asked about some really good moments readers of the comics could look forward to in this story, Michael responded with some juicy teasers:

“I think just about every cliffhanger has its shock value. That’s a characteristic of the show that Marc and I wanted to make sure closed out each issue. There’s a sequence in Issue 2 involving Jessica and an alligator that’s a favorite moment of mine. And Eric takes his relationship with Sookie to new heights in Issue 3.”

Comics as a Part of the True Blood Universe

With teasers like that, fans have to wonder exactly what kind of role the comics play with True Blood on the air. Are the comics a completely separate entity from the show or do they tie in? While the storylines in the comic are indeed separate from the show, McMillian describes the comic as a supporting act for the show:

“The comic is a great way to expand the mythology and explore certain corridors of the True Blood world that the show may perhaps leave untouched. Issue 1, for example, kicks off with a tour of a Tru Blood bottling plant. “

So in other words, the comics are a way for fans to explore a bit deeper in the world of True Blood using aspects that were introduced in the show but are not something that it has had time to expound upon. Very cool Michael!

Gotta Talk About the Newlins

No interview with Michael McMillian would be complete without discussing a little bit about Steve Newlin and his wife Sarah (Anna Camp) who were a big part of season 2. We only saw glimpses of them in season three. But do the comics give any insight as to what they’ve been up to since season 2? McMillian says yes:

“We will see a bit of Smilin’ Steve in “Tainted Love.” And perhaps a glimpse of what Sarah Newlin has been up to…All I can say is she has taken what has happened to her and used it to her advantage.”

Now that should make for some interesting reading now shouldn’t it! As for whether or not Steve Newlin or Sarah will return to True Blood on screen, McMillian doesn’t know. But he does say that he thinks Steve would settle his scores with Jason (Ryan Kwanten) and Eric (Alexander Skarsgård).

Fans who are interested in reading this first series can head over to the HBO shop and order a hard cover version of it, entitled “All Together Now” which was released this past week.

PaleyFest 2011 Update: True Blood Panel Questions and Cast Member Added

Ask Questions Online During True Blood Event!

true-blood-castWant to participate in PaleyFest 2011 but are unable to attend? Well now is your chance Truebies! The Paley Center for Media recently announced that it is accepting questions online via its website for the festival. If time permits, the True Blood panel will be asked questions submitted by fans on the internet! How awesome is that?

This is especially good news due to the very quick sell out of tickets for the True Blood event which will held be on Saturday, March 5th, 2011. Tickets went on sale last Friday, January 21st to Paley Members and Sunday, January 23rd to the general public for individual events. A good portion of the orchestra seating for True Blood sold out within the first five minutes of the member’s sale.  Type “Paley” into a search on eBay and look under the heading of tickets and you will see for yourself just how hot this event is!

Update on Who Will Be Attending PaleyFest

Alexander Skarsgård (Eric Northman) was the only confirmed member of the show’s cast and creative team when I reported the PaleyFest Lineup last week. But as of today, I am pleased to announce that yet another cast member has also confirmed that she will be on the True Blood panel! Over the weekend I quietly tweeted Kristin Bauer Van Straten (Pamela Swynford De Beaufort) to ask if she would be attending and was pleasantly surprised to receive the following response:

“Yes! I’ll be at Paley Fest!!!”

So there you have it Truebies! One of our favorite duos on the show will be at PaleyFest together in what seems to be their first joint appearance. TBN will announce who else will be at the Saban Theatre if and when it becomes available. If you would like to ask a question of the True Blood panel, click here.

Thank you to Kristin Bauer Van Straten for taking the time to answer that very important question!

Season 4 Update: Casting Call and Episode Title for Episode 6

A Call Goes Out For a Recurring Guest Star

Neko CaseJust when you thought it was going to be a slow news week Truebies, another little tidbit about season 4 has made its way out onto the web! Episode six of season 4 is entitled “I Wish I Was the Moon” according to IMDB. It is written by Raelle Tucker and is directed by Jeremy Podeswa. There is also a song of the same name by Neko Case who is depicted to the right. The lyrics can be found here.  Perhaps we will hear it during the episode.

This particular installment calls for the character of Mavis who is slated to be a recurring guest star. The casting call reads as follows:

[MAVIS] Female, African American, 20-30 years old. She is a sad-eyed girl dressed in a modest 1930s dress. RECURRING GUEST STAR. Must speak with a Cajun accent.

Judging from the way she’s dressed, Mavis sounds like she’ll be a part of a flashback. Very interesting! Shooting is scheduled to commence on this episode on February 4th. More details about this episode will be released if and when they are available here on TBN!

Joe Manganiello Credits True Blood for Upcoming Nuptials

A Killer Year

Joe-Manganiello-Audra-MarieJoe Manganiello (Alcide Herveaux) had a stellar 2010. Initially cast on True Blood as a guest star, the actor announced at Comic Con 2010 that he had been made a series regular on the show. Later that year, Joe proposed to his girlfriend Audra Marie and she happily accepted!  But the latter would have never happened without True Blood.

People Magazine caught up with the actor on Saturday, January 22 at the PGA awardsand he told them that his first check for playing Alcide as a series regular went to buying a custom designed ring for Audra:

“The first thing I did with my first check as a season regular is get together with my friend who is a jewelry designer and we co-designed an engagement ring,” he says. “And then my now- fiancée and I went on our trip to Italy and got engaged.”

Going to the Chapel

Now that the happy couple is engaged what about the wedding? While there has been no official announcement yet, they are close to setting a date and choosing a location. But one thing Joe is certain about is who he’ll be inviting—his cast mates!

“The cast will be invited to the wedding…I love them. They’re like my family.”

It sounds like Audra Marie is a very lucky woman being engaged to such a sweet and thoughtful man as Joe Manganiello! But he is also very quick to credit his fiancée who has been extremely supportive and cheered him on through this exciting phase in his career.

We here at TBN would like to extend Joe our sincere congratulations and best wishes to his bride Audra! And for those of you wanting to see more of Alcide Herveaux tune in to HBO June 12 for the season 4 premiere.
