True Blood’s Take on Vampires

vampybillWith Season 2 of Alan Ball’s Golden Globe nonimated HBO TV series “True Blood” now in production and the recent release of Underworld : Rise of the Lycans in theatres now is probably a good time to recap the mythology of vampires according to the world of Alan Ball’s “True Blood”. Some of the myths regarding vampires in “True Blood have changed from what is common lore.

What are vampires really? Are they dead or alive? What makes them tick? Well according to Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer) a vampire’s body mechanism is different from humans. Even though vampires have no brain waves, no heartbeat, no need to breathe and no electrical impulses how they function is simple described by Bill as “Magic. As he further explains that even with humans it is magic how the body is able to perform the way it does and that the way vampire’ bodies function is just different.

Vampires seem to be immune to most things in “True Blood” except for one type of blood borne disease called “Hep D.” It does not kill them but makes them weak enough to make them vulnerable to attacks and being staked to death. Therefore they try to make sure such information does not get leaked out to the human population otherwise it would be used against them.

The vampires of “True Blood” no longer need to hunt humans to drink their blood in order to survive. Japanese scientists have made a breakthrough discovery by developing synthetic blood which is sold as a beverage. Now the vampires are able to “come-out-of-the-coffin” and intermingle with humans and live as equals in society. However, some still prefer the taste of the real-thing.

One of the interesting points that exists in the “True Blood” world is that vampire blood has various narcotic effects upon humans such as increased libido, heightened senses and hallucinations. Just like any type of hard drug it is highly addictive and the humans suffer severe withdrawal symptoms. Some humans hunt vampires in order to drain them and sell their blood in the underground drug market trade for very high prices.

Some vampires tend to live together in a cluster or “nest ” where they live their “undead” existence as vicious, cruel, lawless creatures of the night. Some humans willingly submit themselves to be food sources to these vampires, but many times vampires will use “glamour” techniques to hypnotize a person to allow themselves to be bitten. In addition vampires can lay claim to humans as a way to mark their territory that they are the only one who can feed off that particular human.

The hierarchical structure of the vampire society is quite rigid and reminiscent of feudal times with older vampires having higher rank then younger vampires. In the world of “True Blood” younger vampires pledge their servitude and receive protection from a high ranking vampire in charge of an area which is similar to peasants showing loyalty to a local chiefdom in feudal times.

Some of the other myths remain such as silver being being harmful to them, being staked through the heart will kill them and they will die in sunlight. Other myths such as not seeing their reflection in the mirror and garlic, holy water and the cross being a source of fear to them are dispelled in “True Blood”. In season 2 will may discover more about the vampire world that we still do not know about and make us ponder what else is out there.

“True Blood’ is by far my favorite television project. I love the fact that the show’s mythology goes much deeper than just the relationships between humans and vampires. In the world of ‘True Blood,’ many races of magical creatures exist right under our noses. It is dark fantasy mixed with drama and humor … what’s not to love?”

“We are very fortunate to have the same core crew of artists for the show’s second season,” Rebert adds about his MastersFX team. “These guys have been with us for years and are the finest craftsmen I’ve ever worked with. More True Blood Spoiler News for Season 2

15785_largeIt seems that everday little bits of information come out regarding what fans can expect to happen in season 2 of Alan Ball’s very successful HBO TV series “True Blood”. News has already been coming out from various sources giving us little teasers. It seems that Alan Ball has mention that season 2 will revolve around Bill (Stephen Moyer) and Sookie (Anna Paquin) travelling to Dallas to find a missing area sherriff. However, their biggest obstacles will be newly made vampire Jessica who will be a throrn in their relationship and as Alan Ball stated ”she’s part of their life now.” ”Bill made her; he’s responsible for her.” It seems they will have turbulent times together.

Bill and Sookie’s relationship will not be the only focus in season 2. The series will develop several storylines with the other various characters. Jason will become more invovled with Fellowship of the Sun as he tries to find meaning to his life. The mysterious Maryann’s identity will be revealed in this season and will lead the audience to wonder what more is out there. Perhaps the biggest question that people have on their mind is what happened to Lafayette and will he be in Season 2. Alan Ball provides a little teaser by saying ”I can’t tell you if Lafayette will be back,” but ”He did die in the books.” What does this cryptic message mean? It seems that Alan Ball will keep us guessing until the season begins in the summer.

Filming for season 2 has already begun and information coming out states that the show is in pre-production in the Baton Rouge area. They plan to shoot portions of the show in Louisiana in February, April and June. It is interesting that they will be shooting in Baton Rouge. I can only make the assumption that perhaps they chose to use Baton Rouge as a stand-in to represent Dallas. Another interesting point is the film set in Louisiana will be accepting resumes and inquiries by e-mail at truebloodbr@gmail.com for extras on True Blood.

Audiences can expect a whirlwind of experiences with season 2 as only Alan Ball can present it. Sam Trammel mentioned that his character will have a new love interest but she will be up to no good. While Stephen Moyer stated in a red carpet interview during the Golden Globe, season 2 is going to be “out there” and there will be some crazy stuff happening. We cannot wait and see what is in store for season 2.

UPDATED with comment from M. Ruscio and A. Keir!*

ACE,The American Cinema Editors, have announced this years nominees for their yearly Eddie award and “True Blood” editors Michael Ruscio and Andy Keir have gotten the nod. Ruscio and Keir have been nominated for Season 1 Episode 1 of “True Blood”, “Strange Love”. The Eddie is awarded to recognize the art and craft of the editor in film and television. “True Blood” was nominated in the category of Best Edited One-hour Series for Non-commercial TV. The competition will come from Eric Sears (Final Destination 2, Must Love Dogs) for the “Los Muertos” installment of “Crash” and Kate Sanford (King of the Jungle, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy and The Black Donnelly’s) for the “More With Less” episode of “The Wire.”

Nomination for an Eddie is open to ACE members automatically and open to non-ACE members through a transparent self nomination process. Membership to ACE is through sponsorship, experience and approval of a board of directors. All members vote on all nominated awards.

This is the second Eddie nomination for Michael having been nominated in 2006 for a 2001 episode “Everyone’s Waiting” from Alan Ball’s “Six Feet Under”. Michael son of actor Al Ruscio and actress Kate Williamson has a long resume spanning over 2 decades and including such well known shows as “The Sopranos”, “Cold Case” and “In Treatment” as well as cinema offerings such as “The Hunt for Red October” and “Nobody’s Fool”. Michael has also tried his hand at directing, writing and producing. He’s taught the art of editing at the American Film Institute and the Los Angeles Film School and was the subject of “Cut by Cut: Editing Six Feet Under” on the 4th season DVD. He also produced, wrote and directed a short film called “In Order of Appearance” which has been shown at various film festivals around the country. He is married to Ginni Barr-Ruscio and they have two sons Jackson and Cooper.

Andy Keir is nominated for two Eddie’s this year with a second nomination in the category of Best Edited Motion Picture for Non-Commercial Television for his work on “Bernard and Doris” the story of Doris Duke and her gay butler Bernard. Keir has previously been nominated for a Golden Satellite Award in the category of Best Motion Picture Film Editing for the 1999 film, “Beloved” (with Carol Littleton). The Satellite Awards are given by the International Press Academy, a group open to all full-time entertainment journalists, celebrating achievements for Film, Television, DVD and Multimedia. Additionally Keir has worked as an editor for over a decade on such productions as “Beloved”, King of the Jungle”, and “Neil Young: Heart of Gold”. Andy also appeared in the featurette “Anatomy of a Scene”, a behind the scenes peek by the Sundance Channel. In his spare time Keir is the bass guitarist for a band called, “The Right Out Louds. Kudos go out to Andy for scoring two nominations in one year!

* When contacted for a comment Michael and Andy responded, “Thanks so much for the great article. We’re both pleased for the show to have a nomination in the first season.”

The Beverly Hilton Hotel will be the site of this years 65th American Cinema Editors Eddie Awards on February 15th featuring Norman Jewison as this years ‘Golden Eddie’ recipient. The Eddie is often the best indicator of which cinema giant will win that years Best Picture Oscar but will this translate to Emmy territory? Only time will tell. Let’s all wish Mr. Ruscio and Mr. Keir the very best of luck and not forget that they’re the men that have tormented us with those deliciously misleading previews week after week. Thanks for the great work Michael and Andy!
