Denis O’Hare on Becoming Russell Edgington, Vampire King

In tonight’s episode of True Blood, we will be meeting the delightfully insidious Russell Edgington, Vampire King of Mississippi. To help us get to know the actor who plays him, The Advocate did an in-depth interview with Denis O’Hare in which he offers great insights on the creation of his 2,800-year old character.

As a gay actor, Denis says that being Russell is like “home territory…but a character’s sexuality, even if he’s gay, isn’t necessarily the most important attribute to me. In the case of Russell, he’s a power-hungry ancient druid who has a serious concern for the stewardship of the earth. Not to downplay it, but being gay is just another aspect of his life.”

Since Russell is not a very prominent character in Charlaine Harris‘ books, Alan Ball gave Denis some creative license to develop his own backstory. He researched ancient Celtic culture and went hiking with castmate Theo Alexander in Runyon Canyon, during which they discussed how Russell and Talbot met and fell in love, and how their relationship has evolved over 700 years:

“We came to the idea that they met in Byzantium, where Talbot was some sort of Greek prince. They met at a costume party where Talbot was dressed as Alexander the Great and Russell was dressed as Augustus…What you’ll see is a marriage that’s well-traveled and a little frayed at the edges. These guys snipe and complain, but there’s always an incredible deep affection at the base of it. Theo and I worried that there were too many fighting scenes between us, but then we had this lovely scene later in the season, a lovely tender moment, where I finally get to put my hand on his cheek and basically talk about how much I care for him. It was a great relief to have that scene, because we kept talking about that every day of shooting: How do we show the love?”

Denis also hinted that later in the season, we would be seeing Russell in bed with another man, and that Talbot would have a steamy scene with another man, as well. So how does that arrangement work for them?

“Well, you know, after 700 years, you gotta keep it spicy. There’s also a sense of, You’re not going anywhere, so if you need to get that, you go ahead and get that. There’s a level of trust there that’s pretty strong, so Russell has no fear that Talbot’s going to fall in love with somebody else. Theo and I talked about the idea that they broke up for maybe 75, 80 years sometime around 1700. Russell went to the Dutch Indies to get involved with trade, and Talbot went to Greece to fight for his independence. Then they missed each other too much, so they got back together again.”

When asked the standard question–Team Bill, or Team EricDenis declined to answer. Ever the diplomatic king, he said he needs them both for strategic reasons.

It’s not surprising that Denis seems to be having a lot of fun working on the show! All the thought he has put into his role makes his performance so engaging, as Truebies will begin to see tonight in “Beautifully Broken”!

True Blood’s Denis O’Hare Goes Wild in Mississippi

I’m sure Russell Edgington, vampire King of Mississippi, as played by Denis O’Hare, is just as warm, charming and cuddly as you might expect (kind of like an undead Tony Soprano).

O’Hare, a Tony award winning stage and screen actor,  spoke with Dave Walker of the Times-Picayune, New Orleans, and described what it is like to play the 2,800 year old vampire in Season 3 of HBO’s True Blood.

Denis recalls he was in Budapest working on the feature The Eagle of the Ninth when his agent called with the news he was being invited to join the cast of the Southern vampire gothic.

“I’m a big fan of the show. I think because I was such a fan of it, I never pushed to get on it or imagined being on it. I didn’t imagine myself fitting in there. As an actor watching another show, it seems perfect, and you can’t imagine inserting yourself in any way. I didn’t see myself in it at all.”

But then he discovered he was to play a 2,800 year vampire king and thought “Oh, this is totally me”.

He describes Russell Edgington as: “at once savage and cultured. I think he’s got a lot of charm and a lot of humor and he’s deadly. Except for the deadly part, it’s just like me.”

O’Hare describes the research he did to flesh out his portrayal of Russell, visiting Jackson, Natchez (used as Russell’s nest in the show) and New Orleans.  He also created a back story for the King.  Given his age, Russell was obviously not from Mississippi, in fact, not from the US at all.  Instead, O’Hare theorizes:

“He was probably from East of the Danube, where the Celts came from. This guy moves across Europe through the sweep of history. We decided his base accent was something Germanic, so when the character gets exorcised or totally out of his mind, he slips into German.”

O’Hare muses about what it would be like to live so very long and what it would mean for his relationships with humans and other vampires, including his husband of 700 years, Talbot, played by Theo Alexander. The vampire contempt for humans has its basis in the impermanence of mortal life, he explains, it is:

“Based on the idea that these people don’t exist for very long, so why would you form a relationship with them? They’re just not worth it.”

And can a romantic relationship last 700 years?  Well, sort of.  Denis explains that the fact Russell and Talbot have stayed together for 700 years means they have a bond of loyalty that goes beyond the physical.

I guess we’ll all get to judge for ourselves just how cultured and funny the King of Mississippi really is come episode 2 of True Blood’s third season.

As for Denis O’Hare, he is having the time of his life working on the show.

“It’s a total riot.  As an actor, the best playground is the imagination. You sit there in a scene and let your imagination go wild.”

SPOILERS: True Blood Stars Talk Season 3

We now have only hours left in our wait for True Blood Season 3, and even more spoilers have been released. Be warned, if you don’t want to know for tonight, close this page now!

On to the spoilers for the rest of you! Let’s start with what has already been released in the past…

First, Season 3 begins right where the Season 2 finale left off, with Sookie wondering where Bill is, since she’s convinced that he’s been kidnapped, Tara’s in a bad place because of what happened to Eggs, and Jason is the same as Tara, but his reason is because he actually killed Eggs. It doesn’t stop there. As we know, there will be weres… Lots and lots of weres, as well as new vampires, like King Russell of Mississippi and Franklin Mott. But there’s more to everything than just what we see in the beginning.

Denis O’Hare, the man behind King Russell, described his character as an “old guy” and a “great assimilator” who doesn’t use his real accent because he’s 2,800 years old. This is a character who is very good at surviving and being unnoticeable, but also knows that in order to be king, one has to fight for the position, not be born into it. What else does Denis have to say about King Russell and how he’ll affect the season of True Blood?

“It’s a big character arc. A lot of things are going to happen. It was nice to start at a place where I’m sophisticated and gentile and then wind up going through a lot of pain and a lot of bloodshed.”

Brit Morgan also commented on the new season of True Blood about how her character, Debbie Pelt, will be important. According to her, we’ll see an instant dislike of Sookie by Debbie which will only be made worse when she sees Sookie with her ex, Alcide Herveaux. Also, be ready for Debbie to be absolutely passionate and crazy when we see her on True Blood.

Of course, the ball of insanity doesn’t stop with Debbie Pelt. It rolls down to continue with Lorena, who’s back with a vengeance. Of course, that doesn’t mean that everything Lorena goes through will be pleasant… Mariana Klaveno had this to say about Lorena during Season 3:

“The joke on set was that I was the ‘Kenny of South Park‘ this season. [In] every episode something atrocious is done to me and someone in the background screams out, ‘You killed Lorena. You bastards!’ Every episode.”

Mariana also said that she’s in a scene that will make everyone’s jaws drop and that she has a feeling it’ll be the watercooler moment of the episode it airs in, if not the whole season, so be prepared for that!

Sam isn’t in for the nicest season either. As we already know, he’s out to find his birth family. What he doesn’t count on, though, is their inability to let him leave because of his own status as a bar owner. This is especially going to be apparent with Tommy Mickens, Sam‘s little brother. He feels that thanks to Sam‘s education and wealth as the owner and proprietor of Merlotte‘s, he needs to be knocked down a few pegs. However, Tommy will be able to help Sam with some of the “rules” of shapeshifting, which Sam never learned because he was adopted by humans.

The spoilers go on with Jason… Whose Season 3 plot lines are probably familiar if you’ve read the Sookie Stackhouse novels. We may see a great physical change to go with the emotional changes brought on by Jason‘s getting over the fact that he killed Eggs at the end of last season. However, don’t be too sure of anything. As Ryan says,

“Expect the unexpected. That’s what I love about the show. Even if you’ve read the books you still can’t put your finger on exactly what’s going to happen. Because so many things have already happened that have broken the boundaries of the books.”

Of course, Lafayette and Pam both had things to add as well… Nelsan Ellis is excited that Lafayette has a new love interest this season in Jesus, the nurse for Lafayette‘s mother. Lafayette will not be caught up in the werewolf madness because he’ll be too focused on being with Jesus, his mother, and working for Eric selling V.

Kristin Bauer is also going to be seen more throughout Season 3. She says,

“We get more Pam this season, and more importantly we get more sides of Pam. Her relationship with Eric is really explored and it’s really fun. Because that relationship has within it, a father/daughter relationship, a love relationship from the past and it’s got her vulnerability, her toughness all wrapped up in it. And the way these writers show us these other sides of Pam and all the characters is so lovely and brilliant.”

Obviously, we have a LOT to look forward to, starting tonight when Season 3 of True Blood finally begins to air!

True Blood Season 3: Rutina, Lindsay and Denis Share Some Tidbits

Everyone keeps trying to get more details about True Blood‘s Season 3. Although series creator, executive producer and writer Alan Ball has given us some teasers, Sci Fi Wire took a different approach and spoke with Rutina Wesley (Tara Thornton), Lindsay Pulsipher (Crystal Norris) and Denis O’Hare (Russell Edgington) to learn more about their characters.

Rutina revealed that she has really developed Tara to the point she knows how her character thinks, feels and will react.  Tara wants to put her life in order and become a woman who enjoys what life has to offer.  However, another struggle is in store for her as she becomes involved with a mysterious vampire named Franklin Mott (James Frain).  Rutina would not say whether the relationship will be with or without Tara‘s consent.

Talking about Tara, Rutina used words like vulnerable, fierce and defensive.  Although Tara‘s defensiveness has been very annoying to a good many people in Bon Temps, Rutina proclaimed that “those defenses are earned”.

Denis O’Hare was in Budapest making a movie when his agent called asking if he wanted to be the Vampire King of MississippiDenis was already a fan of True Blood, so he kind of knew what he was getting into.

Referring to Alan Ball as “one of our great creative minds in TV and film”, Denis said the new characters of Season 3 have been very well integrated with the original characters.  The originals are still vitally important and continue to develop, so the weaving into the storyline of the new characters is “a really deft marriage’.

Of his character, Russell, Denis said he’s the oldest vampire and is probably an ancient Celt, coming out of present day Romania.  Along with his boyfriend of 700 years, Talbot (played by Theo Alexander), he lives in a Jackson, MS mansion.

Russell‘s very charming.  He’s incredibly instinctual.  He survived millennia of different vampire fads, and he is ruthless without being rude.  He’s never rude.”

Crystal‘s story is less revealing.  As in Charlaine Harris‘ books, Crystal is from Hotshot, a town on the wrong side of the tracks.  But that’s pretty much where the similarity ends. as far as we know.  She does fall for Jason Stackhouse (Ryan Kwanten) and sees him as her ticket to a better lifestyle.

According to Lindsay, Crystal and Jason “have an amazing kind of a magical connection”.  But Crystal has a secret and Lindsay won’t say more about it.  And speaking of Jason, Lindsay was asked about sex scenes.

“I haven’t done nudity before, and it hasn’t come up yet, but the people that run the show … I guess I’ll cross that bridge when I get to it.  I’m not too worried about it,” she said.

All eyes will be glued to TV sets as Season 3 unfolds on HBO this Sunday, June 13.

For the Furbangers and Fangbangers – True Blood’s New Supernaturals

Season 3‘s new werewolf, Alcide Herveaux, will make the love triangle of Bill, Sookie and Eric into a love square.  That’s according to Joe Manganiello who plays Alcide, Sookie‘s new bodyguard.

Speaking with Access Hollywood, Joe admitted he’s happy to see werewolves getting more respect in Hollywood.  In fact, he used the personal trainer who got Hugh Jackman into shape for his Wolverine role in X-Men.  Joe said he trained six days a week and ate constantly (high protein) in order  to get “that kind of animal shape” because “abs are definitely a requirement”.

Good thing, too, because we’ll be seeing plenty of him.  Alcide will be “exposed” quite a bit.  Evidently this is due to his feral nature.  And with regard to being feral, Joe‘s body double is a huge “real” wolf with yellow menacing eyes.

About his character, Joe told Access, “I’m constantly running around grabbing all of the women on the show…there’s only a few women on the show I haven’t run after and grabbed.  It’s just kind of how werewolves say ‘hello’.”

For vampire love, Season 3 introduces Russell Edgington, King of Mississippi (played by Denis O’Hare) and his lover/partner, Talbot (played by Theo Alexander).  They’ve been together as a couple for 700 years.

Denis explained the relationship as being complicated.  Talbot is Russell‘s lover, his boyfriend, and also his son.  Russell is Talbot‘s maker.

And the relationship is very passionate, according to TheoTalbot is very happy being a vampire and he loves his mate.  But there will be some “bumps in the road”.  Could it be that the king is not faithful?

Are these actors enjoying their new roles on True Blood?  Denis stated that this is a “once in a lifetime experience”.

“I will never be able to have a job as great as this again in my life,” he told Access.  “It’s a great bunch of people.  It really is phenomenal.”

But we know that.  And in just 3 more days we’ll be watching the premier of Season 3 – on June 13.

True Blood Season 3 Spoiler: Meet the Vampire King of Mississippi

His real name is Denis O’Hare and he’ll be playing Russell Edgington on HBO‘s blockbuster series, True Blood.  Here is another new character for Season 3, which starts airing June 13th.

Thanks to Kathie’s Sci-Fi Drive By, we got a good insight into this new character via Denis himself.  In an interview with Kathie, Denis said it took a while for him and producer Alan Ball to form his character – finally setting his age to be about 3,000 years old.  So Russell is much older than Godric.

When asked to describe how the show first introduces him, Denis stated that we will find him in his mansion in Jackson, Mississippi.  “We kind of get into the vampire structure that each state has their own sheriff, their own dominion, and they’ve got their own king and/or queen.”  He also lives with his boyfriend/lover of 700 years, Talbot, played by Theo Alexander.

According to Denis, his character is not really played up in Charlaine Harris‘ books, so he pretty much got free reign from Alan to discover who he is.

“And then I would check back in with him [Alan] and see if I was on the right path and he would say, “Yeah, that’s great. Except that’s not quite accurate,” or “Don’t go down that road.”  So he was definitely guiding me and I was just taking liberties where I could.”

Sounds like Season 3 is going to be amazing.  It’s almost here!

True Blood Season 4 Spoiler News: Who is Coming Back

Joe Manganiello True Blood Alcide HerveauxThe season finale is set to air on Sunday, September 12, 2010 on HBO and already there is talk about who we will see coming back for Season 4 of True Blood. E!Online.com gives us a rundown on which new characters will be returning for season four.

MAJOR SPOILER ALERT!

First there is Joe Manganiello, which we already knew since it was announced awhile back that he will be a regular for season four.  However, the following may surprise some fans and wonder what is going to happen next season.

Denis O’Hare, Marshall Allman, Kevin Alejandro and Lauren Bowles will all be returning for season four of True Blood!

According to E!Online.com:

“Denis is set to return to the HBO hit next year, according to sources, but don’t expect to see Russell too early in the year. We have it on good authority (Alan Ball‘s) that initially witches will reign supreme, but I’m told the plan is for Russell to reappear later in the season.”

Nelsan Ellis confirms that Jesus (Kevin Alejandro) will be back and will be his partner in crime.  As he states: “We’re partners in crime now, my boy toy, so he will be back.” Adds Kevin with a knowing grin: “I’m hearing rumors about that, too. I’ve never been a part of anything this big before.”

As for Marshall Allman he wasn’t as forthright when asked if he will be coming back for season four only to say that yes he is as so will be Lauren Bowles as wiccan Holly Cleary.

Now with this information it is definitely going to be interesting to see what happens in the season finale and with the fate of Russell Edgington.
