Alexander Skarsgård is Named One of the Best Dressed Men of 2011

True Blood’s ‘Eric’ Makes GQ UK’s Top Ten:

Alexander SkarsgardThough the saying may be that ‘the clothes make the man,’ Alexander Skarsgård (Eric Northman) is one of few men that clothed or unclothed, always looks well-dressed.

Skarsgård was recently named one of the ten Best Dressed Men of 2011 by the British edition GQ. He is in splendid sartorial company in sharing the top ten with George Clooney, Javier Bardem, and Zac Efron, to name but a few.

Besides cutting a fine silhouette in Tom Ford at the 2010 Emmy Awards, Skarsgård has been spotted around Los Angeles rocking pieces by high-end designers including Prada, Burberry, Dolce & Gabbana, Salvatore Ferragamo, and Marc Jacobs.

Casual Sophistication:

Despite the designer labels, much like his True Blood alter ego, Viking vampire Eric Northman, Skarsgård has a casual sophistication about his style. He’s also not opposed to wearing a more mainstream brand like Gap. When asked about what he prefers to wear off-camera, Skarsgård has said that he when he can, he likes to support  Swedish designers by donning designs by Whyred and  Fifth Avenue Shoe Repair, among others.

Five-times voted Sweden’s sexiest man prior to his success in HBO mini-series Generation Kill and True Blood, Skarsgård continues to be noticed for more than just his acting talents. US-based design company Hickey Freeman recently asked him to be a part of a new ad campaign. We posted the outcome of that collaboration last month and our favorite Viking looks quite debonair in the shot.

We congratulate Alex on this stylish recognition and look forward to what he’ll bring to the role of Eric this season!

True Blood Fashion at the 2010 Scream Awards

The Stars of True Blood Dressed for Success

The red carpet was rolled out for the stars at Spike’s Scream Awards this past Saturday.  True Blood cast members were a big hit as they sailed down that red carpet wearing a variety of winning outfits. I would describe the fashion seen at the 2010 Scream Awards as “cocktail casual”.  Cocktail-length dresses were very popular with the female contingent, and denim/blazer combinations dominated the male wardrobe for this awards show.  It’s a good thing all of our favorite True Blood celebrities were looking so good, because they were making quite a few trips up to the stage to collect well-deserved awards.

“Elegant” and “sophisticated” are words often used to describe Anna Paquin (Sookie).  Her look at the 2010 Scream awards was no exception.  Anna wore a beautiful Alexander McQueen dress simply accessorized with a chunky bracelet and matching clutch purse.  The touches of gold on the accessories was a great choice that added warmth and sparkle to this ensemble. Some may remember the Alexander McQueen dress Anna wore to the 2010 Emmy awards.  It seems that Anna is certainly fond of showing off a favorite designer!  While Anna Paquin chose a decidedly “un-Sookie” outfit for the award show, Stephen Moyer (Bill Compton) seemed to have pulled his outfit together from Vampire Bill’s closet.  Stephen accompanied his new wife wearing dark denim, a casual gray tee and a loose-fitting leather jacket.  A great look for fall and on par with the other male celebs attending the Scream Awards.

While I think Rutina Wesley (Tara) looks amazing in anything she wears, I would have liked to have seen more risk taken with her ensemble at this year’s Scream Awards.  Her Camilla and Marc dress has an interesting toga-like design, but the only color in Rutina’s outfit comes from her accessories.  She carried a red clutch purse and wore an eye-catching silver and gold necklace.  The gold in the necklace and the clutch tied her accessories together for a look that was put-together and understated.

Not one to be outdone, Kristin Bauer (Pam) shows off her new orchid tattoo in this sleeveless Mandalay semi-sheer sequined dress.  Kristin chose a jewel-encrusted chunky bracelet and a black clutch purse to accessorize her super-sparkly dress.  This is not the first trip down the red carpet for this Mandalay dress, however; Rebecca Pigeon wore it to the premiere of “Red” last week.  In my opinion, Kristin wore it better.  Hair, makeup, and accessories pulled this ensemble together for Kristin.  Making a sequined outfit work requires that certain “je ne sais quoi”, and Kristin Bauer has it in spades.

True Blood Inspires Fashion Line

There are a lot of ways to promote a television show, and HBO seems to have spared no expense when it comes to their latest guilty pleasure, True Blood. Viral ads, clips, and posters designed to entice already hooked fans as well as curious new viewers abound. In an interesting marketing move, Warner Brothers Home Video has paired with Australian fashion house, Saint Augustine Academy, and designer, Alvin Manalo, to cross promote the release of Season 2 on DVD and Blu-Ray in a vampire-inspired fashion show during Australian Fashion Week. The designer debuted a collection containing pieces for both men and women in black, white, and – of course – red. Pieces included goth-inspired, yet flowing dresses, one-piece rompers, structured shirts, and metal accents. Models wore heavy boots and unruly hair. The makeup was a severa pale base with red or black lips, chrome fangs, and metal-embellished eyebrows.

Mac Pro makeup artist, Karen Hopwood, summed up the seemingly odd collaboration best when she said, “music and film are really influencing fashion”.

Mumbrella writer, Emma Tom, noted that the current return of the popularity of the vampire genre has renewed an interest in goth style and that designers such as Yves Saint Laurent, Jean Paul Gaultier, and Christian Dior have previously presented collections in the same spirit.

Although vampire fashion may not be for everyone, the fact that True Blood-inspired a couture collection is reason enough to celebrate your favorite vampire‘s style (whether Jessica‘s envelope-pushing, teenager-rebelling outfits, Pam‘s tailored suits, or Bill‘s clean cut togs). True Blood vampires are not the exotic or extreme variety presented by Manalo, nevertheless, their unique fashion sensibilities are worth a second look at Season 2, which will be released on May 25.

Fangtastic Fashions: Greta Garbo Fashion Icon

Thumbing through a fashion magazine while sitting in Dr. Ludwig’s office waiting to get her annual Hepatitis D vaccination, Pam sighs with disgust as she tosses the issue back on the table. “Human’s they haven’t the first clue of what a real fashion icon is.” Rolling her eyes. “Miley Cyrus please.”

After recently reading filth of this nature, I find it imperative I continue to give my two cents in this publication on fashion. It seems obvious no real fashion expert will step up to the plate; so, obviously moi must do it.

If I were going to personify a fashion icon it would not be one of today’s pop stars, Betty Ford Clinic lifetime celebrity members or reality television show winners. Do any of you human’s know what a real fashion icon even is? No Cyndi Lauper is not the correct answer. Fashion is about more than just style, it is about personality, style, charisma and attitude. If you are not confident in what you wear or how you wear it, it doesn’t matter if it is Givenchy straight off the Milan runway.  First you need to slip on your confidence before you ever take a thing off the hanger.

Greta Garbo the notoriously private Swedish born actress whom never attended social gatherings, gave interviews and was extremely reclusive, rather known for her style on-screen and off. Greta would be one of my picks for a real fashion icon. This lady knew how to take simple pieces, use what she was given and work it. This ladies is exactly what I have been trying to get across to you.

Greta had a style of her own often adorning hats such as fedoras, berets and cloche hats. Essential pieces Greta often wore were tailored silk shirts, trench coats, wide leg trousers, dresses which accented the waist, scarfs, thin belts and lots and lots of shoes! Greta would often order up hundreds of pairs of shoes at one time! A woman after my own heart. Topping these items off with a lovely set of long strand pearls. A few of Greta’s clothes consisted of men’s clothing; so ladies feel free to steal that white Armani button down of your man’s closet. A bit of advice, tell him his shirt is at the cleaners, this always works on Eric. This human, Greta… or so you all assume *wink* knew how to work an ensemble to make a real appearance! Even today her name is still a legend hand in hand with fashion, after all Madonna even sang about her. Bravo Greta!

I bid you all adieu until next time when there is another fashion crisis, which looking around, should not be long. TaTa!
