Entertainment Weekly Spotlight on “True Blood’s New Blood”

True Blood’s third season has been shaken up by the presence of fascinating new characters added to the mix of our familiar favorites. Five of these newcomers to the cast are featured in the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly. They talk about their characters and some of the things they faced on the job.

Denis O’Hare, the veteran thespian behind Russell Edgington, discussed the difficulties of portraying a vampire–having to ingest large amounts of the sugary syrup used for blood, and trying to pronounce S’s when wearing the sharp speaking fangs. Neither Denis nor any of the other actors hinted at their longevity on True Blood, but the article does say that the King’s “never-ending appetite for political play is his downfall.” According to Denis,

“My trajectory is a tragic one. At one point I end up with rotten teeth.”

Russell’s companion, Talbot, is portrayed by Greek actor Theo Alexander. The character was initially envisioned to be British, but Theo wanted a chance for the part:

“When I read it, I said, ‘He’s very sensual, he’s very Dionysian, he’s very Socratic.’ He reminded me of Greek royalty. I wore my kimono [to the audition] because he’s wearing his robe in the first scene.”

Theo and Denis enjoyed spending time together before the filming to come up with some backstory for their characters’ 700-year relationship. Talbot’s not just there to be a pretty face with the snarky comebacks–executive producer Alan Ball hinted that his actions as the season continues would have “pretty far-reaching consequences for a lot of people.”

In league with Russell and Talbot is Franklin Mott, played by James Frain. He says it was a mark of his inexperience playing a vampire that he struggled to remove his fangs when everyone else could just pop them right out. According to James, Franklin truly does have feelings for Tara, but “his idea of love proves he’s a psychopath” in that his view is so skewed and narcissistic.

Moving on to the werewolf of the group, Joe Manganiello entered the show as Alcide Herveaux, protector of Sookie as she ventured to Jackson, MS. In the article, EW actually acknowledges a fan site for being the first to nominate Joe for the role–that’s the power of popular demand, folks! On the subject of the nudity that’s expected to play a werewolf (or any supernatural creature, or any human, really!) on True Blood, Joe mentioned that there are a few options for actors to cover–or not cover–themselves:

“A sock, a thong, and the ‘manty’ or man panty. You can go sans sock, [but] I come from a good Pittsburgh upbringing that raised me to wear a sock.”

Finally, we’re introduced to Lindsay Pulsipher, who is still a great mystery to viewers because we’ve only glimpsed her twice thus far in the season. Her character, Crystal Norris, grabs the attention of womanizer Jason Stackhouse. Lindsay says she’s different from other girls Jason has been with:

“She’s not so eager to jump into bed with him. She’s unaware of how courtship works.”

It seems that her storyline is going to be revealed slower than others, but Alan said that the people of Bon Temps will face danger directly related to Crystal. (How’s that for cryptic…)

Of course, there are a few other newbies in Season 3, but this was a great feature on these characters/actors and definitely gets us interested for what’s in store for them!

Russell Edgington’s Home Has a History

Mississippi has been very welcoming to the cast and crew of True Blood. Since the vampire king of Mississippi, Russell Edgington (played by Denis O’Hare) resides in Jackson, the area is now full of werewolves and vampires.

An article in clarionledger.com described the historic antebellum home of King Edgington.  It is Longwood, located in Natchez.  This beautiful home was discovered by production designer Suzuki Ingerslev when she visited Mississippi looking for the right location.

“We were drawn to the grandeur, the timeless elegance and the unusually octagonal architecture,” she said.  “As far as we could see, Longwood was the most unique antebellum home we’d ever seen.

“There’s something about the land that surrounds Longwood that made it a little foreboding, but at the same time, it was absolutely lovely.  It had to be the king’s house.”

Many stills were shot to get the flavor before building the set.  The crew all commented on Longwood’s beauty.  Seeing it lit up at night gave them a sense of magic.

Suzuki said that walking around and shopping in Natchez was as if she travelled back in history.  It gave her the perfect ideas and props for the re-creation of the king’s house.  From the photos they took they were able to produce the centuries old feeling with a true Southern flair.

In Jackson, Suzuki and art director, Cat Smith, visited the locations highlighted in Charlaine Harris‘ books, on which the True Blood series is based.  “We just wanted a feel of what it looked like everywhere.”

Getting into the history of Longwood, tour guide Harry Boschieri explained that it is a great example of mid-19th century architecture and is the largest octagonal house in the United States.

“It features a six-story octagonal rotunda and a byzantine-Moorish dome with a 24-foot fenial.”  “The 30,000 square foot structure is filled with furniture from the 1840s and 1850s.”

Construction on the home began in 1860 by a wealthy cotton planter named Dr. Haller Nutt.  The Philadelphia architect, Samuel Sloan, left his tools and fled north a year later when the Civil War began.

Only the basement level was completed for living quarters (local workers were used).  A year before the war ended, Dr. Nutt died of pneumonia, leaving his wife and children to continue living in the 10,000 square foot basement of the unfinished home.  She died in 1897.

Longwood was occupied by 3 generations of the Nutt family until 1968. Today it is maintained by The Pilgrimage Garden Club.

The Natchez Convention and Visitors Burueau seem pleased to have the True Blood crew filming in their area.  The scene where Russell and Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer) rode together on horseback to the king’s house was described by Sally Durkin, media liaison for the bureau, “they really made Longwood look spectacular”.

The Natchez folks would like True Blood to come back and do more filming.  The production designer said she would love to go back and hang out “because everyone was so nice”.  Sounds like true Southern hospitality.

SPOILERS: New True Blood Spoilers from E! Online

Once again, the wonderful E! Online has provided us with some new nibbles of information about what’s coming up soon in True Blood! Debbie Pelt and Russell Edgington are really going to affect this season of True Blood as it continues!

What’s the deal with True Blood’s new werewolf, Debbie Pelt?
She’s 100 percent wackadoodle, that’s for sure. But we haven’t seen the end of Alcide and Debbie. “Debbie doesn’t put too many rules on anything. There’s a little bit of a love triangle [between Alcide and Cooter],” Brit Morgan tells us. And get ready for more throwdowns with Sookie as time goes on. “Our paths definitely cross, and not in a nice way. Debbie‘s not fond of Sookie. It’s not good.”

I love Dennis O’Hare on True Blood. Anything ahead for the King?
Lots and lots of blood, so says Dennis. “Russell steps up to defend the Earth because he feels like humans abdicate it. He wants them to step back, and vampires will run things because they’ll do a little better.” Unfortunately, all does not go well for the Mississippi man. In fact, by the end: “I’m wearing a trench coat and flip flops and I’m much bloodier. I’ve fallen from grace. It’s a big character arch, where I end up going through a lot of pain and a lot of blood shed.” Dun-dun-dun.

Sounds like we’re going to see a lot of action as the third season of True Blood continues airing every Sunday night at 9 PM!

True Blood 3.04 “9 Crimes” Review

After waiting two long weeks for our next fix, True Blood returned with plenty of good stuff to make the wait worthwhile. Several characters took quite a beating in “9 Crimes,” whether it was a physical one (Lafayette, Pam, Tara), or emotional (Sookie, Bill, Eric, Alcide). As plans continue to unfold, it’s hard to see how all of this could turn out well for anybody. I keep wondering who’s going to save them from their problems, when everybody else’s situations are just as screwed up.

Sookie is tending to Alcide’s wound from the fight at Lou Pine’s when she gets a phone call from Bill. His cold manner is jarring. He immediately admits that he just had sex with Lorena. “We were doomed from the start,” he tells Sookie. “You are no longer of concern to me. Do not try to find me. I do not wish to be found.” As soon as he hangs up the phone, however, his eyes betray him.

Having seen everything leading up to this, and the threats to Sookie’s life from werewolves, Russell, and Lorena, it’s quite obvious that Bill is purposefully trying to hurt her feelings so that she won’t want to be with him anymore. Something also seems to have snapped inside Bill. Trying to be a vampire with humanity may have brought him love, but it has also tormented him. Lorena thinks they have shared something special, but Bill puts that notion aside: “Any passion you felt was me killing my love for Sookie. It had nothing to do with you.” When she still doesn’t believe him, he just hits her, sending her out of the room and slamming the door in her face.

Sookie doesn’t know what Bill has gone through (except what she has seen in the minds of the werewolves who captured him), but she knows that the man who just said those things to her on the phone is different from the the one she fell in love with. Alcide, still heartbroken himself, is not so good at comforting Sookie in her time of distress: “No matter how well you think you know somebody, they can still turn around and kick you right in the nut sack.” Her tears get to him, though, and they share a cute moment together when he puts his arm around her: “Oh my God, you’re so warm.” “Sorry.” “No, it’s ok, I’m just not used to it.” “It’s a were thing. We run hot.” “I thought maybe you were coming down with the flu.” Alcide sleeps beside Sookie while she cries through the night, amassing a pile of used tissues.

Meanwhile, another vampire is in tune with Sookie’s emotions and finds himself thinking of her. Eric sits at Fangtasia watching Yvetta dance, but he fantasizes about Sookie finally wanting him the way he wants her–although I can’t imagine her ever saying, “I’ve got skills you can’t even dream of, cowboy.”

The next morning, Sookie is still resolved to find Bill, much to Alcide’s chagrin. “I’m not a doormat!” she insists. “I think he’s in trouble. Maybe I’m wrong, but if he can look me in the eye and tell me it’s over, then I’ll leave him here to rot.” She thinks she can find more information if they go back to the were bar for Debbie’s engagement party with Coot and his gang. She calls on Alcide’s sister, Janice (who works at the beauty salon Debbie goes to) to help her blend in.

Meanwhile, Merlotte’s has some drama of its own going on. Arlene is cranky, complaining about having too much work to do. Sam, keeping his promise to Sookie, hires Jessica as a hostess to keep her out of trouble. Then Arlene gets mad because she doesn’t want another redhead around to attract attention and split her tips. Jessica seems pleased to have something to do with her time, but she runs into a problem when a sweet boy she used to know from Bible study recognizes her. She glamours him to forget that he ever saw her (which Hoyt overhears and makes him have sad puppy eyes).

Jason looks on at Bud’s retirement party and sees Andy getting promoted to sheriff. On the other side of the bar, the current Bon Temps High School quarterback (expected to soon break Jason’s passing record) is messing around with his friends. Jason goes over and tries to share some wisdom: “10 years from now, there’s gonna be a version of you, 10 years younger, doing the same thing to you. And then who’re you gonna be?” Thinking about where he used to be, and where he’s ended up, Jason is still convinced that his life would mean something if he were a cop. He even blackmails Andy into making it happen: “I’m not doing them fake ride-alongs and filling out forms. I’m thinking there’s gotta be an easier way.” When Andy says he can’t break the rules, Jason uses his leverage with the Eggs situation, no matter what the consequences would be if people were to find out what they did: “There any rules about taking tv interviews and promotions for not shooting a killer dead, when I’m the one that’s gotta live with doing it?”

Poor Tara. Franklin forces his way into her house, tries to use her to get to Sookie, bites her, and is now holding her hostage. He might be genuinely insane, laughing about fruit and strapping a bouquet of flowers to her hands like it’s some sweet gesture. Tied up in the car taking her somewhere for a “surprise,” he explains, “My job supports my financial needs. My emotional ones…there’s so much I want to tell you. I’ve been so lonely, but now you’re mine, all that’s changed.” Their destination: Russell’s mansion.

With Bill in his service now, Russell wants to find out what Queen Sophie-Anne is up to. Bill worked for her as a “procurer” for 35 years. He sticks to his story that he was in Bon Temps by choice, “on sabbatical,” he says. The King knows he’s still hiding something about Sookie, but Bill reveals other useful information–he figured out that the Queen has been using Eric Northman to sell V in his area because of her money troubles with the IRS. Russell is pleased by the news: “Tug on the purse strings, you’ll find the lady’s heart.”

Sam thought he wanted to find his family, but now he can’t seem to get rid of them. Joe Lee and Melinda are camping out in their van in his parking lot, and Tommy has gone missing after trying to break into his safe. Sam feels for his brother, and when he finds him, he offers to let him stick around, but Tommy won’t leave his parents: “I ditch them tomorrow, they end up the gutter by the end of next week. You think I can live with that? I won’t be rid of these people until the day they die.” Sam decides to share the burden with Tommy, so gives the Mickens a place to stay until they can get on their feet, as long as they quit drinking. Oh, Sam, if only it could be that simple!

Lafayette has become attached to his fancy new car from Eric, so he sets off to sell the V. He meets with Calvin Norris in Hot Shot, but he doesn’t accept the offer. Lafayette is getting beat on by Calvin and his “brother-cousins” when Eric drops in from the sky to help change their minds. Lafayette and Eric are driving along talking business when Pam calls—the Magister is raiding Fangtasia looking for the V. The Queen set them up. Eric flies to her straight away, and finds the Magister burning her with the silver tip of his cane. Instead of turning in the Queen, Pam and Eric throw the blame on Bill. Eric asks for the opportunity to find the missing Bill and bring evidence of his blood betrayal. The Magister gives him two days, or he will use Pam to punish Eric: “They say the loss of a child is the deepest of despair.”

A few stick-on tattoos, lots of leather, and one black wig later, Sookie is ready for Lou Pine’s. Alcide reluctantly agrees to go, too, so that he can try to step his ex-girlfriend from being initiated into the vicious, V-addicted pack. Sookie is drinking shots with the same were who attacked her the previous night, when Debbie Pelt makes her charming introduction: “Who the fuck are you?!”

Russell takes Bill and Lorena out for a drink. Their limo pulls up to a strip club, and as if to make Bill prove his loyalty, the King sends him out on the hunt. Bill looks around at the various women and chooses the one with the sadness in her eyes to match his. As she says later when she’s dancing for him: “No point anyway. Loving anyone, anything. Feels good at first but always turns to crap. I know the truth about life. It’s a hell I’ll never get out of alive.” “No one does,” Bill replies.

Back at Lou Pine’s, Alcide tries to beg Debbie not to join up with this crew or other werewolves will never accept her. “I don’t need your pussy pack!” she screams. Then Russell arrives and the party begins. What follows is a creepy communion of sorts, with Russell biting into his own wrist and letting the blood pour into shot glasses. Passed around on trays, the weres take it and drink before branding Debbie with their mark. Then Coot shifts into his wolf form and starts howling. The energy in the room seems to take over, with everyone changing, even Alcide who can’t control it. His eyes turn orange and he yells at Sookie to run away. She gasps with fear, and elsewhere in Jackson, Bill senses her. He gets that familiar look of pain that Sookie is in danger, but he can’t go to her. He and the stripper climb into the limo, and Russell, Lorena, and Bill all start draining her. She was right about life, but sooner than she realized.

Denis O’Hare on Being a Vampire King

Who would have thought that Mississippi was ruled by a 2,800 year old vampire king? In the HBO series True Blood, Russell Edgington is that vampire king and he’s looking to rule more than just Mississippi.

The king is played by Denis O’Hare, a Tony award winner for his role in Take Me Out; he is also known for his roles in Milk, as well as Brothers and Sisters. O’Hare sat on Bill Compton’s porch in between shooting to talk to iF Magazine.

O’Hare reveals he’s had some practice at portraying a vampire. When he was eight, O’Hare was a blood-sucker for Halloween, though he was also a werewolf at nine as well as Frankenstein at ten. As for playing a king, he portrayed the famous Scottish king, Macbeth. However, this is the first time he is playing a Mississippian.

During the interview, O’Hare kept his accent for the show, as he feels his own accent is boring. This led to a discussion about home, where O’Hare revealed he was born in Missouri, and raised in Detroit, Michigan before spending twelve years in Chicago and finally residing in New York. O’Hare notes,

” I’m from nowhere. I’m from everywhere.”

Many of the characters in True Blood seem to be from nowhere and from everywhere, which seems to help O’Hare in his portrayal as Russell Edgington. However, O’Hare hasn’t done much genre work as he has spent most of his career on stage and, in the last few years, in film. He does note that Changeling was a period piece and his new film, Eagles of the North, with Channing Tatum is a swords and sandal picture. He also did the horror movie Quarantine, where he was eaten by a dog in an elevator, but True Blood is O’Hare’s first taste of the fantasy genre.

Though he hasn’t been in this kind of genre piece and had no concept of how he’d portray a vampire, he was a fan of True Blood prior to being cast as the vampire king. For O’Hare playing a supernatural is a great experience. He muses,

“You’re always trying to explore the limits of your powers. ‘Can I do this, can I do that, can I fly, can I read minds, can I tell the future, can I read smoke?’ And this guy is particularly fun, because he may have anything, really. You can kind of be whatever you want to be… He’s king because he’s powerful. He’s king because he took it. And this is a guy who is 2,800 years old, who is more powerful than any of these other vampires, so he can do things physically that nobody else can do. I don’t think I have special powers, but my powers are more concentrated, so I’m just incredibly fast.”

For O’Hare, Russell Edgington can build and destroy. There is a depth to his character that makes him more real to the audience. Aside from creating a dynamic character, O’Hare believes the show is more than a plot driven monster fest; rather the show forces the viewers to ponder philosophical and ethical questions. For example, in a society where gay marriage is banned in certain parts of the country, True Blood showcases a vampire king who is gay and has been in a relationship with his partner for seven hundred years. There is love and a home between Russell Edgington and TalbotEdgington’s interest in the Queen of Louisiana is simply a political alliance.

In the books, the Queen marries the King of Arkansas instead of Mississippi. O’Hare feels that while Alan Ball has followed very closely to certain details of Charlaine Harris’ novels, Ball follows his own gut feelings. From a small and not so powerful character in the novels, Russell Edgington has become much more stronger…a vampire buying and selling power.

The power of this vampire king can be reflected in his mansion. O’Hare points out,

“They’ve made a plantation house for me, which is based on a house in Natchez, Mississippi, called Lionwood Plantation… You know, it’s funny, because when we go there… all of the crew are kind of going, ‘My liege,’ ‘Oh, the king is here,’ ‘Welcome home,’ and everyone’s joking, but after awhile, it does begin to have an effect. It helps you in a good way – it makes you feel like you have the power that’s attributed to you. So that’s actually fun, I actually enjoy that.”

With a mansion and a kingdom, also comes fangs. O’Hare notes that in order to have his fangs suddenly pop out, he must hide them in different areas during shooting. He’s hidden them in cigar boxes, behind a chair, clenched in his hand or simply given to him by someone off set. On performing with his fangs O’Hare notes,

“They add a little boost to everything, because you know that you look fearsome. They tell what you’re feeling in a strange way, they’re a way of telegraphing, I am now angry, lustful, hungry, whatever.”

Fans of True Blood are going to see a lot more of O’Hare this season. Whatever he’s feeling-angry, lustful, regal-fans are ready ready to sink their teeth into this dynamic character.

After 2800 Years, King Russell Has a Passion for Life

As a history buff, Denis O’Hare, who plays Russell Edgington on the HBO series, True Blood, has been creative enough to make up his own history for his character.

The vampire King of Mississippi is nearly 3,000 years old, according to series creator Alan Ball.  So, in a wonderful interview with the New York Post’s PopWrap, Denis shared that he was probably an ancient druid who migrated west.

“…one thing I do know from reading a lot of history, the ancient druids came from the area East of the Danube, and they migrated west searching for better land, better food and the bed of the sun.  They were sun worshippers, so I love the idea that inside of him, this vampire has memories of being a sun worshipper.”

In discussing backstories and motivation for his character, Denis said that each character in the show wants to obtain the same things – respect, affection and even food.  The vampires are often motivated by the human emotions and desires they were born with.  “I think even at 2800 years old, Russell has a drive for life.  A passion for life.”

PopWrap added that the king also has a thirst for power.  Calling back to history, Denis referred to “the old royalty of Europe” where marriage was based on politics.  Russell wants to form an alliance and being the crafty modern man, he will later start using the media to his advantage.

Evidently, this Sunday Russell will display a multi-layered personality that will show him as “deeply vicious, deeply sentimental, deeply vulnerable and deeply hostile all at the same time”.  Denis said he loved that scene.

“It is so beautiful that he has a moment of vulnerability during that speech where he’s attempting to manipulate Bill but ends up speaking about the emotional toll involved with being a vampire in love with a human.  He speaks the truth in the middle of this daunting chess game.”

Touching on the relationship between Russell and Talbot, Denis stated that vampires have different morals from humans.  Their relationship is extremely intimate and they are life partners.  But it is not considered a betrayal to be with a different partner.  It’s simply satisfying their lust which is another aspect of their love.  However, he admitted that theirs is “a tragic storyline”.

Fans want to know where Bill (Stephen Moyer) fits into Russell‘s plans.  Initially, Russell just wants to use Bill in a small way to obtain his goal.  But Denis said that, as in life, plans change for the characters as they move forward with them.  In Bill‘s case, the information he provides causes Russell‘s plans to expand.

“So Russell himself doesn’t always know what he’s doing.  There are times when you’ll see him with Eric [Alexander Skarsgard] or Bill where he’ll be dealing lies on at least two different levels – every character is lying about everything.  These people are playing a massive game that keeps shifting every episode.”

Denis described Season 3 as a non-stop rollercoaster ride.  Referring to episodes 9 and 10, he said we can expect scenes that “are the height of triumph and the abyss of despair”.  The emotional ride and darkness and images of lying in a pool of blood gives him nightmares.

Sunday nights are going to be white knucklers as we watch what unfolds this season.

Vampire King is this Season’s Villain

Every good television drama needs a well written villain.  In Season 1 of True Blood, we had Rene out to kill vampire lovers.  In Season 2 we had Maryanne out to destroy the entire town. Season 3‘s villain is shaping up to be Russell Edgington the Vampire King of Mississippi played by Denis O’Hare.

As we saw in Episode 2, Edgington was responsible for Bill’s kidnapping by werewolves, for which he is completely unapologetic, and is plotting against Queen Sophie Anne. Not bad for his introduction! We also see that Russell has a boyfriend of 700 years named Talbot played by Theo Alexander. In the books Talbot is Russell‘s human companion and not a vampire.

In a show about vampires, werewolves and various supernatural beings there are plenty of “bad guys” to go around, but Russell is 2800 years old and the “oldest, strongest vampire” around.  That doesn’t bode well for the residents of Bon TempsO’Hare spoke to People Magazine telling them:

Russell intends to take over the world. He feels that human beings have squandered their stewardship of the earth by not treating it well. And he is an old Celt, a Druid, who was an earth-worshipper, and he feels like he needs to take over.”

O’Hare is listed as a Season 3 regular and said his character “has plans”. We can’t wait to see what those are!

Spoiler: True Blood’s Vampire King Wants It All

Do NOT read this article unless you really want to know what’s behind Bill Compton‘s kidnapping.

We met Russell Edgington (Denis O’Hare) and his boyfriend Talbot (Theo Alexander) on last Sunday’s episode of True Blood.  But we continued to be as baffled as Bill (Stephen Moyer) as to why the vampire King of Mississippi brought him across state lines.

Special thanks to TVGuide for interviewing Denis O’Hare and providing us with the inside scoop.

How did Denis become a fan of the show?  He had not read the books and wasn’t ready to switch his allegiance from Alan Ball‘s previous show, Six Feet Under, to his new HBO series.  But watching four episodes with a friend had Denis calling his cable company to sign up for HBO On Demand so he could watch the entire season of True Blood.

So once he signed on, what did he learn about his character?  Denis said he was told that in addition to having a southern accent, Russell is a charming, powerful and very deadly vampire.  He is beyond morality and as an ancient pagan Celt of approximately 2,800 years, the king is so concerned with nature that he believes vampires should rule the earth because humans are ruining it.

About his relationship with Talbot, Denis referred to it as tragic.  As in many marriages, the two can be deeply in love but get caught into a cycle of constant bickering.  It’s Talbot‘s nature to be moody with sudden periods of darkness.  And Russell is often worrying about Talbot‘s happiness.

Now about Bill, what does the king want with him?  Russell wants to “become the first vampire president of the United States, and his first target is Louisiana.”  In order to do that, he figures he’ll have to blackmail Sophie-Anne (Evan Rachel Wood) into marrying him.

For some reason the queen wants Sookie (Anna Paquin) and the king knows this.  He wants Bill to spy on the queen to give him something to use for his blackmail scheme.  But the kicker is, “Along the way, he realizes that Sookie is actually the prize, and then he becomes obsessed with her.”  Everybody wants Sookie!  And we’re talking about a gay vampire king and a lesbian vampire queen.  What is Sookie?

In comparing the two monarchs, Denis said this:  “Russell is good with money.  Sophie-Anne is childish; she doesn’t know how to wield her power.  Russell knows exactly how to wield his power.  Sophie-Anne is cruel in a sort of off-handed way; Russell is cruel is an incredibly calculated way.  They’re both violent and autocratic, but Sophie-Anne is erratic. There’s nothing erratic about Russell.”

We noticed that Russell also likes werewolves.  He’s been keeping them in his employ for over 1,000 years.  They are completely addicted to his blood, so they are loyal to him and are his eyes during the daylight.  In the ancient druid culture, the raven and wolf work together.  In the Celtic language, Russell‘s real name means raven.  Hence his love of werewolves.

In the article Denis also revealed that the king will spend a lot of time in Fangtasia.  He will also be visiting many front porches instead of eating at Merlotte’s.

Russell is like a snake; he’s incredibly calm and incredibly charming… until he rips your f—ing spine out.  My hands have been so bloody I’ve had to come home and soak them for a couple of hours.”

Season 3 is about to spiral into the white knuckler ride the cast promised it would be.  Hold on tight!

Theo Alexander on Talbot and Russell

After months of waiting, True Blood fans have finally found out the mastermind behind Bill Compton’s abduction: Russell Edgington, the vampire king of Mississippi. However, it’s Russell’s partner of 700 years that steals the spotlight in the second episode of the third season.

Talbot is a vampire that would make Martha Stewart proud; he’s a gracious host, has an eye for decor, and knows how to give an elegant but intimate dinner party. In an interview with PopWrap, the actor that plays Talbot, Theo Alexander gives his take on the vampire.

In order to get the part, Theo had to first convince the casting director that what they needed was a Greek actor, not a British one. Theo, wearing a kimono, confidently went into casting as Talbot and proceeded to change everyone’s mind, including Alan Ball’s.

With everyone convinced that Theo could vividly portray Talbot, the next obstacle was to create a realistic bond between Talbot and Russell. Theo and Denis O’Hare, who plays Russell, decided to work on their 700 year history during pre-production. As Theo sees it:

“We met, we talked, we went to dinner, we had to create a 700-year history. It wasn’t easy but in order to be in love with someone on screen you have to really love them in real life. And Denis is very easy to fall in love with. He’s a great guy and an amazing actor – I already admired him, so it wasn’t that hard.”

With all this hard work, the actors were able to create a unique and wonderful history between Talbot and Russell. Both men met in Byzantine where Talbot was royalty. They left together but Talbot wasn’t turned until he was wounded in a battle they were fighting as mercenaries. The wounded Talbot would have died, but Russell (under Talbot’s request) turned his lover.

As the audience will see, the history and the character of Talbot was tailored very much for Theo. The Greek culture, the zest for life, the element of tasting and enjoying food, and the precious heirlooms Talbot carefully chooses for his home with Russell is very much in parallel with the way Theo views his own world.

However, with such strong personalities from both Talbot and Russell, fighting between them is bound to happen. For Theo, fighting between two lovers happens because when you love someone you feel completely and, therefore, fight. Theo views it as:

Russell is also my maker, so it’s a double whammy. He’s like my father and my husband. So there is this double animosity, he can quiet me with one word. But I think every relationship… if you don’t fight, there is no relationship. And that’s what fuels good sex too!”

Speaking of sex, when asked about the rumors that Talbot and Eric may have a possible love scene, which would mean infidelity on Talbot’s part, Theo was very elusive, leaving fans to wonder if the rumors are true or if Talbot remains a faithful married man. However, he said if a scene like that were to happen, it would come about organically and with ease. The show’s writing is excellent and everything that happens, happens for a reason. Every sex scene has a purpose and pushes the story forward.

With all the sex happening on True Blood, one would wonder if the actors are concerned about it. Theo believes that many of the European actors on the show have been trained to understand that things like sex will happen in the natural progression of the show. For him, every sex scene or a scene with a touchy subject,

“…Pushes you forward as a human being as well. Everything that scares you in life, if you do it, makes you a better person. A more whole person. If I have a scene with a man and it scares me, you do it — that pushes you one step ahead as an artist or human being because you did something you were scared of. We know these things can happen – nervousness is there – but you’ve got to go beyond that.”

Going beyond the surface is exactly what Theo intends to do. Though Alan Ball has mentioned that Russell and Talbot emerge as the villains of the season, Theo wants to avoid the surface definition of that word. For Theo, Talbot and Russell are two vampires in the midst of survival, which is a theme for all of the characters in True Blood. If everyone is trying to survive that means that the third season of True Blood will be unpredictable. So call off all the bets and have another serving of blood sorbet!

Denis O’Hare on Becoming Russell Edgington, Vampire King

In tonight’s episode of True Blood, we will be meeting the delightfully insidious Russell Edgington, Vampire King of Mississippi. To help us get to know the actor who plays him, The Advocate did an in-depth interview with Denis O’Hare in which he offers great insights on the creation of his 2,800-year old character.

As a gay actor, Denis says that being Russell is like “home territory…but a character’s sexuality, even if he’s gay, isn’t necessarily the most important attribute to me. In the case of Russell, he’s a power-hungry ancient druid who has a serious concern for the stewardship of the earth. Not to downplay it, but being gay is just another aspect of his life.”

Since Russell is not a very prominent character in Charlaine Harris‘ books, Alan Ball gave Denis some creative license to develop his own backstory. He researched ancient Celtic culture and went hiking with castmate Theo Alexander in Runyon Canyon, during which they discussed how Russell and Talbot met and fell in love, and how their relationship has evolved over 700 years:

“We came to the idea that they met in Byzantium, where Talbot was some sort of Greek prince. They met at a costume party where Talbot was dressed as Alexander the Great and Russell was dressed as Augustus…What you’ll see is a marriage that’s well-traveled and a little frayed at the edges. These guys snipe and complain, but there’s always an incredible deep affection at the base of it. Theo and I worried that there were too many fighting scenes between us, but then we had this lovely scene later in the season, a lovely tender moment, where I finally get to put my hand on his cheek and basically talk about how much I care for him. It was a great relief to have that scene, because we kept talking about that every day of shooting: How do we show the love?”

Denis also hinted that later in the season, we would be seeing Russell in bed with another man, and that Talbot would have a steamy scene with another man, as well. So how does that arrangement work for them?

“Well, you know, after 700 years, you gotta keep it spicy. There’s also a sense of, You’re not going anywhere, so if you need to get that, you go ahead and get that. There’s a level of trust there that’s pretty strong, so Russell has no fear that Talbot’s going to fall in love with somebody else. Theo and I talked about the idea that they broke up for maybe 75, 80 years sometime around 1700. Russell went to the Dutch Indies to get involved with trade, and Talbot went to Greece to fight for his independence. Then they missed each other too much, so they got back together again.”

When asked the standard question–Team Bill, or Team EricDenis declined to answer. Ever the diplomatic king, he said he needs them both for strategic reasons.

It’s not surprising that Denis seems to be having a lot of fun working on the show! All the thought he has put into his role makes his performance so engaging, as Truebies will begin to see tonight in “Beautifully Broken”!

True Blood’s Denis O’Hare Goes Wild in Mississippi

I’m sure Russell Edgington, vampire King of Mississippi, as played by Denis O’Hare, is just as warm, charming and cuddly as you might expect (kind of like an undead Tony Soprano).

O’Hare, a Tony award winning stage and screen actor,  spoke with Dave Walker of the Times-Picayune, New Orleans, and described what it is like to play the 2,800 year old vampire in Season 3 of HBO’s True Blood.

Denis recalls he was in Budapest working on the feature The Eagle of the Ninth when his agent called with the news he was being invited to join the cast of the Southern vampire gothic.

“I’m a big fan of the show. I think because I was such a fan of it, I never pushed to get on it or imagined being on it. I didn’t imagine myself fitting in there. As an actor watching another show, it seems perfect, and you can’t imagine inserting yourself in any way. I didn’t see myself in it at all.”

But then he discovered he was to play a 2,800 year vampire king and thought “Oh, this is totally me”.

He describes Russell Edgington as: “at once savage and cultured. I think he’s got a lot of charm and a lot of humor and he’s deadly. Except for the deadly part, it’s just like me.”

O’Hare describes the research he did to flesh out his portrayal of Russell, visiting Jackson, Natchez (used as Russell’s nest in the show) and New Orleans.  He also created a back story for the King.  Given his age, Russell was obviously not from Mississippi, in fact, not from the US at all.  Instead, O’Hare theorizes:

“He was probably from East of the Danube, where the Celts came from. This guy moves across Europe through the sweep of history. We decided his base accent was something Germanic, so when the character gets exorcised or totally out of his mind, he slips into German.”

O’Hare muses about what it would be like to live so very long and what it would mean for his relationships with humans and other vampires, including his husband of 700 years, Talbot, played by Theo Alexander. The vampire contempt for humans has its basis in the impermanence of mortal life, he explains, it is:

“Based on the idea that these people don’t exist for very long, so why would you form a relationship with them? They’re just not worth it.”

And can a romantic relationship last 700 years?  Well, sort of.  Denis explains that the fact Russell and Talbot have stayed together for 700 years means they have a bond of loyalty that goes beyond the physical.

I guess we’ll all get to judge for ourselves just how cultured and funny the King of Mississippi really is come episode 2 of True Blood’s third season.

As for Denis O’Hare, he is having the time of his life working on the show.

“It’s a total riot.  As an actor, the best playground is the imagination. You sit there in a scene and let your imagination go wild.”

For the Furbangers and Fangbangers – True Blood’s New Supernaturals

Season 3‘s new werewolf, Alcide Herveaux, will make the love triangle of Bill, Sookie and Eric into a love square.  That’s according to Joe Manganiello who plays Alcide, Sookie‘s new bodyguard.

Speaking with Access Hollywood, Joe admitted he’s happy to see werewolves getting more respect in Hollywood.  In fact, he used the personal trainer who got Hugh Jackman into shape for his Wolverine role in X-Men.  Joe said he trained six days a week and ate constantly (high protein) in order  to get “that kind of animal shape” because “abs are definitely a requirement”.

Good thing, too, because we’ll be seeing plenty of him.  Alcide will be “exposed” quite a bit.  Evidently this is due to his feral nature.  And with regard to being feral, Joe‘s body double is a huge “real” wolf with yellow menacing eyes.

About his character, Joe told Access, “I’m constantly running around grabbing all of the women on the show…there’s only a few women on the show I haven’t run after and grabbed.  It’s just kind of how werewolves say ‘hello’.”

For vampire love, Season 3 introduces Russell Edgington, King of Mississippi (played by Denis O’Hare) and his lover/partner, Talbot (played by Theo Alexander).  They’ve been together as a couple for 700 years.

Denis explained the relationship as being complicated.  Talbot is Russell‘s lover, his boyfriend, and also his son.  Russell is Talbot‘s maker.

And the relationship is very passionate, according to TheoTalbot is very happy being a vampire and he loves his mate.  But there will be some “bumps in the road”.  Could it be that the king is not faithful?

Are these actors enjoying their new roles on True Blood?  Denis stated that this is a “once in a lifetime experience”.

“I will never be able to have a job as great as this again in my life,” he told Access.  “It’s a great bunch of people.  It really is phenomenal.”

But we know that.  And in just 3 more days we’ll be watching the premier of Season 3 – on June 13.

True Blood Season 3 Premiere With Denis O’Hare

Denis O’Hare, who is cast to play Russell Edgington, the vampire King of Mississippi, spoke with The Dish Rag from Zap2it.com on the red carpet at the True Blood Season 3 premiere on June 8, 2010 at the Arclight Theatre.

True Blood Season 3 Spoiler: Meet the Vampire King of Mississippi

His real name is Denis O’Hare and he’ll be playing Russell Edgington on HBO‘s blockbuster series, True Blood.  Here is another new character for Season 3, which starts airing June 13th.

Thanks to Kathie’s Sci-Fi Drive By, we got a good insight into this new character via Denis himself.  In an interview with Kathie, Denis said it took a while for him and producer Alan Ball to form his character – finally setting his age to be about 3,000 years old.  So Russell is much older than Godric.

When asked to describe how the show first introduces him, Denis stated that we will find him in his mansion in Jackson, Mississippi.  “We kind of get into the vampire structure that each state has their own sheriff, their own dominion, and they’ve got their own king and/or queen.”  He also lives with his boyfriend/lover of 700 years, Talbot, played by Theo Alexander.

According to Denis, his character is not really played up in Charlaine Harris‘ books, so he pretty much got free reign from Alan to discover who he is.

“And then I would check back in with him [Alan] and see if I was on the right path and he would say, “Yeah, that’s great. Except that’s not quite accurate,” or “Don’t go down that road.”  So he was definitely guiding me and I was just taking liberties where I could.”

Sounds like Season 3 is going to be amazing.  It’s almost here!

The “Charming” Vampire King of Mississippi Has Spoken

The anticipation surrounding True Blood‘s Season 3 premiere continues to grow and with the script being so highly shrouded in secrecy, fans have been given only a few tidbits of information to remain satiated. A few things are certain though: we’ll get to see some of our Season 1 and Season 2 favorites as well as be introduced to a slew of new cast members. Tony-award nominated actor Denis O’Hare will be introduced during Season 3 as the 2,700-2,800 year old Vampire King of Mississippi, Russell Edgington. Denis sat down with Deeper Dish to talk about his film and Broadway career, as well as playing Russell on True Blood.

As a fan of True Blood, Denis claims that Russell Edgington is not a villain, but describes him as “charming” and “persuasive”. Denis worked with Alan Ball to conceive of Russell’s evolution and how he would be portrayed on True Blood.

“Initially Alan [Ball] told me that Russell was pretty old and was very charming and had a southern accent. We decided eventually that Russell was older than the character of Godric and so that puts him at around the 2700-2800-year-old mark – he was “made” sometime in 800 BC.  He’s an ancient Celt. The Celts originated in the Carpathian mountains and then started migrating West in search of the bed of the sun.  In 55 BC they were defeated by Julius Caesar in Gaul.  So, obviously, Russell has worn many masks and his latest “incarnation” as a southern gentleman is just another mask.”

Fittingly, as the oldest vampire that has been introduced on True Blood so far, Russell offers Bill some love advice based on his own 700-year-old relationship with his boyfriend, Talbot. Although slightly elusive, Denis says that his character, Russell, tells Bill to “spend eternity together- that’s commitment!”

With the Vampire King of Mississippi wearing so many masks, Denis appear to be a great fit. Denis began his acting career in Chicago where he attended Northwestern University and later moved to New York in 1992. From there, he has continued to shine on stage and screen and has starred in the films The Anniversary Party (2001), Milk (2008), Edge of Darkness (2010), the television series Brothers & Sisters, the Broadway musicals Cabaret (1998), Sweet Charity (2005), and received a Tony award nomination for his role in Assassins (2004).

Denis has so far filmed two episodes of True Blood, but hopes to remain part of the cast noting that “if True Blood sees fit to keep me around, I’d love to continue working with those wonderful people.”

The Deeper Dish article includes a series of videos and a fun game of random questions/responses with Denis, highlighting his quick wit and some of the fun we can hopefully expect from Russell Edgington.
