True Blood Cast Member Ryan Kwanten Interview

ryankTrue Blood cast member Ryan Kwanten was interviewed by Erin McWhirter from courier mail.com.au who plays the oversex-driven Jason Stackhouse in Alan Ball’s hit HBO TV series “True Blood”. Ryan discussed how his current character in the show is a complete departure from his previous work on the U.S. sitcom “Summerland” were he played an Australian surfer.

Ryan Kwanten was in Australian during his time off from “True Blood” to lend his voice in the animated feature “Guardian of Ga’Hoole” where he took the to time to speak with Erin Whirter.

During the interview Ryan was asked a series of questions regarding his life in Hollywood and comparing it to back home in Sydney. The biggest difference that Ryan sees is that everyone he knows and has grown up with are settling down, getting married having babies or already have babies. As for himself he states that he still feels that he is 15 and he thinks that sometimes that he acts like he is 15. Even though he has lived in the U.S. for quite sometime coming back to Sydney feels like coming home. Nothing has changed and he feels that connection to the place that he grew up in.

In response to a question about if he found it easy to find work in Hollywood, Ryan states that although he has been able to find constant work he is fortunate to have friends who are not in the industry who help him stay grounded. He said it took him a minimum of 6 months where he could actually say that he trusted them and could call them friends.

With the success of “True Blood” and it being signed on for a second season Ryan was asked if he was surprised by all of this. Ryan’s response was:

“I am amazed because not only is the competition ridiculous over there but the amount of factors that have to fall into play for you to get a pilot and then for the pilot to get picked up and then for that series to go to a second series is enormous.”

An often asked question to Ryan is what is the character Jason like and if he in anyways is like him or has been influenced by him? Ryan says that he is different from Jason in that Jason tends to “fly by the seat of his pants and I tend to be far too cerebral and over-analyse things”. He states that it has been refreshing to just “throw out the textbook and what I thought I knew about acting and life and just go ‘OK, this is what I am going to do and just do it“.

Ryan has learned from playing the role of Jason to let things go and not let the little things upset him. Learning that trying to be a perfectionist about even the smallest thing is a waste of time and energy and that life is too short to dwell on things that have already happened because you cannot go back and change it.

Ryan can honestly say he is not an overnight success. He had worked long and hard to get to the level that he is at right now. Hew recalls during the interview times where all he could afford was a “push bike’ that he used to ride two to three hours from auditions with the change of his clothes in a backpack. He’s happy at where he is now and is proud to say that he did it through perseverance and hard work.

True Blood News from Australia

tbep10Gabriel Wilder from the Sydney Morning Herald wrote a report on “True Blood” which is about to premiere in Australia on Tuesday, February 10, 2009 at 8:30pm on the Showcase channel. Mr. Wilder provides some background about “True Blood” to Australian readers so they know what to expect when the show premieres. Alan Ball’s hit HBO TV series “True Blood” is in no way like “Twilight” as the reporter states. “True Blood” has more violence and has swearing and sex scenes that you wouldn’t find in any Stephenie Meyer’s version of vampires. Alan Ball adapted onto the television screen Charlaine Harris’ world of Sookie Stackhouse and the supernatural happenings surrounding her town of Bon Temps, Louisiana. Season 1 is based upon Charlaine Harris’ first book, “Dead Until Dark”, where the main character, Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin) meets a sexy, brooding 173 year old vampire, Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer) who has returned to his hometown to mainstream among humans. Vampires have come “out of the coffin” since the discovery of synthetic blood by Japanese scientists which can quench their need to hunt humans. The attraction between the two of them is almost instantaneous and soon they develop a relationship that is frowned up by the rest of the town folk.

“I think Alan’s very clever like that,” says Stephen Moyer, who plays Bill. “He knows that it can’t just be [a romance]. I think that it ultimately is a love story [but] it doesn’t mean it can’t be 20 other things as well. When I read the script, I couldn’t believe how much he’d packed into it.”

Australian Ryan Kwanten was cast in “True Blood” in the role of Jason Stackhouse, Sookie‘s over sex-driven brother who tends to sleep with any woman he meets. When Ryan was asked how he got the role of Jason, Ryan states that “he’d (Alan) seen a film of mine and saw characteristics of Jason Stackhouse in the character that I was playing,” Kwanten says. “Next thing you know, I was hired.”
For “True Blood” Mr. Ball wanted to expand the role of Jason in the story and give him more to deal with then what was originally in book 1. Ryan states that in order to play the role of Jason he had to take a different approach from what he has used previously in his other works. With Jason he

“threw away the textbook on everything I thought I knew about acting and just flew by the seat of my pants because that’s exactly how this guy operates,” he says. “It’s really liberating to play a character like that because a lot of characters tend to be very brooding.”

In terms of brooding that term is perhaps best used to describe for Stephen Moyer’s character, Bill Compton, a 173 year old vampire who fought during the Civil War and was turned at the end of the war. Mr. Moyer describes his character as being “completely angst-ridden … your classic tortured hero”.

The casting time for the various characters varied in terms of finding the right person to play the roles. With the Jason character Ryan was cast right away for the part, however, the casting for the Bill character took longer to fulfill. Mr. Ball had a difficult time trying to find the right actor to portray the emotional complexity of vampire Bill Compton. It took Mr. Ball several months to find someone to play Bill until Mr. Ball received an audition tape from Mr. Moyer who had just recently completed shooting “The Starter’s Wife” with Debra Messing which was shot in Queensland, Australia. Mr. Moyer states that “Alan saw it in the afternoon and I flew [to LA] that night.”

“True Blood” may be shocking to some for the amount of blood that is shown in the series and the nudes scenes that both Mr. Kwanten and Mr. Moyer find themselves in. Mr. Kwanten does admit that :

“This is by far the most full-on sex and nudity I’ve ever done,” says Kwanten, who has been acting since he was 16. “I was warned but one can never quite be prepared. You sort of sign your life away and go, ‘Oh, nudity’, then you walk into your trailer and you see a modesty patch and that’s what you’re wearing for the day.”

“True Blood” deals with the underlying metaphor that by being different in anyway that one is looked upon with suspicion and relegated to outside the group never truly being allowed in or being accepted. “It can be any group that has been persecuted or felt like an outcast in society,” Kwanten explains. Although the show may make some people turn away because they may feel uncomfortable with the graphic nature of the show and the way the plot has been presented, but Mr. Kwanten states that “I think they’re the people that need to see it more than anyone, but we’ll get those people one person at a time.”

True Blood to Invade Australia

Ryan KwantenAustralian newspapers are starting to inform their readers about the upcoming Australian premiere of Alan Ball’s very successful HBO TV series “True Blood” which will broadcast on the Showcase channel starting on Tuesday, February 10, 2009. This particular article comes from David Knox of SX and describes for the Australian audience the story line and premise of “True Blood”. Mr. Knox describes in detail the concept of vampires coming out into mainstream society as a result of Japanese scientists developing synthetic blood which can quell their thirst and need to hunt humans. He also discusses the main characters in the show and their particular problems and what makes them so interesting. Here is an excerpt of Mr. Knox’s commentary with an assessment of fellow Aussie Ryan Kwanten:

“Australian Ryan Kwanten (Home & Away, Summerland) plays Sookie’s brother Jason, a road worker and horny bad boy who finds himself as the number one suspect in a murder case. Someone is killing young women and they’re usually his recent conquests. With a ripped bod and rabid naked scenes, Kwanten is sex on a stick”

Mr. Knox’s assessment of “True Blood” is that the show is full of sexual energy with underlying tensions brewing below the surface with excellent performances by the cast. Australians should be prepared to become enthralled with this series as North American audiences have been.

True Blood’s Ryan Kwanten Comfortable With His Role

Academy of Country Music Awards ArrivalsRyan Kwanten’s popularity has steadily increased since starring in Alan Ball’s hit HBO TV series “True Blood”. His popularity may be the result of the character that he portrays, the over sex-driven brother of the lead protagonist Sookie Stackhouse, (Anna Paquin) Jason Stackhouse. Ryan states he is not bothered by the fact that the audience sees him more often without clothes then with clothes on. Ryan commented that Australia is a very open-minded society and tends to not be shocked by nudity. However, in terms of the various sexual positions that he finds himself in, he says some may be shocked regardless of where the person comes from. For Ryan he says it is all part of the fun.

Alan Ball states that the Jason character in the Charlaine Harris’ Sookie Stackhouse series, (which “True Blood” is adapted from) appealed to him and he wanted to incorporate him more in the show. He felt that Jason was a big character who had his own story to tell and wanted to explore the character’s hesitation to grow up. He sees Ryan’s character having similarities to Peter Pan or Nate in his show “Six Feet Under’ or even Kevin Spacey’s character in “American Beauty”. Ryan states that doing nude scenes for Alan Ball is easy.

“I’ve been in the business now for 15 years and I haven’t had an experience that comes close to the one I’ve had with working with Alan and HBO,” he says. “They’re so embracing of the artist. You know anything you want to bring to the table, no matter how ridiculous it may seem, they’re willing to listen. It really is an absolute rarity in this business to have that, and a lot of it comes from being associated with Alan. They trust his judgment and his choices.”

Jason lives for the moment and simply wants to have fun and that fun is sleeping around with whatever woman is around at the time. Ryan on the other hand, finds playing Jason interesting because Jason is so unlike him in real life. In closing Ryan explains that perhaps the intrigue of vampires and what draws people to the concept is that the vampires were once human who now have some special abilities and that makes them a possibility in the world.

Jason Stackhouse – Ryan Kwanten

Jason Stackhouse is reminiscent of two Jessicas. The newly made, out of control, ‘daughter’ of Vampire Bill and yes.. Jessica Rabbit.  Jason isn’t bad, he’s just drawn written that way.

The 28 year old, buff, handsome older brother of Sookie Stackhouse became the man of the house at the tender age of 10 when both his parents died in a flood.   The fact that he wasn’t old enough to baby sit his baby sister, necessitating his parents taking them to their Gran’s house and thus being on the bridge when the flood went through, has haunted him all his life.  Maybe the knowledge that life can be so fleeting left it’s shoe-print on his behind, but he’s sure a ‘go for it’ kinda guy.  Women, drugs, drinking … if it might feel good, Jason will try it.  Twice.  If there are four sane choices on what to do in any situation, and one crazy dumb-arsed embarrassing thing to do.. well Jason is consistent.

You can’t quite manage to hate him though.  Sure he’s the biggest horn-dog in Bon Temps but he loves and respects his Gran.  Yeah he’s constantly stepping in poop and never comes up smelling like a rose but he doesn’t let it get him down for long.  True, he’s ‘dumb as a box of hair’ as his on-again off-again girlfriend Dawn tells him.  And even when he finally figures out that Tara has real respect for him (because he protected  her from her drunken, abusive mother at the age of 12) he can’t control himself for two hours without getting it on in an alley with slutty Randy Sue.  It’s just impossible to tell which side of that thin line between courage and stupidity Jason’s going to be on at any moment.  Is going to a vamp bar looking for V courageous or just stupid?  Despite my gut screaming out ‘stupid!’, it works out for him and he gets a girl too.

And just when you think you could hate Jason, when you’re sick of seeing him butt nekid drifting in some hippy dippy hallucinogenic haze, when you wince when you see him opening his mouth, when you’re tired of his drug addled, testosterone driven, womanizing ways.. when he’s just done the most offensive, stupid thing yet by kidnapping the gentlest vampire ever written… you can’t, because of Eddie.  Because Jason finally opens up and tells Eddie of his self-hatred and anguish.  Because Jason behaves compassionately towards Eddie even while yelling at him to shut up, getting over his disgust of all things vampire and begins to truely care for Eddie.  Because when Jason Stackhouse finally mans up and demands that Eddie be released his world ripped assunder again by his murderous psychopathic true love, Amy who is in turn murdered while they are together in bed doing the perpetual ‘one last hit of V’.  Arrested for Amy’s murder, likely to be hunted by vengeful vampires, rebuffed by Tara and Sookie, still mourning his recently murdered Gran who was the last adult figure in his life.  Really, at some point you just gotta feel this guy’s pain.

At the end of season two, True Blood left us with a lot of cliff hangers but Jason’s cliff hanger was the most terrifying since we wondered “Who shot JR?”.  Was he kidnapped by Werewolves?  Murdered by a giant pig?  Turned into a zombie?  Tortured by vampires?  Did he grow hair on his tongue?  Attempt suicide?  Nope, none of the above.  At the end of season two, Jason Stackhouse has an idea, and you just know that’s not going to go well.
