Janina Gavankar Drops Hints about True Blood’s Shape-Shifters

Gavankar Talks Shape-Shifters and Life Before True Blood

Janina GavankarDuring an interview with Accidental Sexiness the terrifically talented Janina Gavankar (Luna) talked about True Blood and her work as a musician and an actor. She also dropped some hints about the future of shape-shifters on the HBO series.

Gavankar, recently cast as shape-shifting high school teacher Luna did not think she would be an actor. In fact, she was concentrating on her musical career before she discovered acting. While she does still sing, Janina says:

“I think it’s pretty obvious that I’ve chosen acting. I make music because I have to. If I don’t, I go crazy. That’s kind of the balance, acting is the focus, music is something that just comes naturally. I do whatever is natural to me.”

You may have seen her in such shows as The L word, ABC’s The Gates, The League and Traffic Light.

Will Shape-Shifters Unite in Season Four?

We will definitely be learning more about True Blood’s shape-shifters since according to Gavankar, Sam (Sam Trammell) and Luna find a shape-shifter support group. But will something develop between Luna and Sam, the shape-shifting owner of Merlotte’s? She adores working with Sam Trammell but Gavankar plays coy:

“Luna and Sam like each other right now and that’s all I am going to say.”

Yes, she’s tight-lipped about the specifics of any relationship that might occur between her and Sam, but she also has this to say:

“I have no problem with sex scenes that move the story lines along and show the true nature of humans, as opposed to sex scenes for sex scenes. I have no problem with nudity, I don’t think there’s any problem with the human body.”

Gavankar and True Blood

Before Gavankar was cast as Luna, she hadn’t seen the HBO series. But since then she’s watched every episode and counts herself a fan.

“Now, I’m such a fan, I’m worried about, even though I know what’s happening, I’m still very worried about Lafayette, Tara is having problems, I’m very concerned about everyone even though I know where they are in the next season.”

As for the books, since the series has made some departures from author Charlaine Harris’ Southern Vampires books, Gavankar has decided to put off reading them for now so that she doesn’t end up distracted by the differences between the two.

I think we’ll all be looking forward to finding out more about Sam and Luna and True Blood’s shape-shifting community!

A True Blood Newbie Teases her Character Over the Airwaves

Janina Gavankar Talks True Blood on LA Talk Radio

Janina Gavankar

The newest blood to join the True Blood cast is Janina Gavankar and she’s already dropping hints about Season 4. Fans will come to know Janina as Luna, the newest shifter in Bon Temps as well as her being the first Native American character on the show. She chatted with her good friend Sheena on LA’s talk radio program the Sheena Metal Experience during  the two year anniversary of her radio show.

Though she wasn’t into weres and vampires when she was a girl, Janina looks forward to reading the Sookie Stackhouse novels to see who the Luna in the books is, although she wants to create her own version of the character. The actress who is of mixed Indian and Dutch descent even enlisted the help of make up artists to changed her skin tone to add a red tone she doesn’t naturally have in order to really show the character’s Native American blood.

As with all shape-shifters and weres on the HBO series, Janina does have to get naked, but she isn’t too bothered by it. For her it’s all about the character and the fact that transforming from one vessel to another is the shape-shifter way. She does reveal that viewers will get a lot more insight and history on shape-shifters and she even gets a scene with shifter Tommy played by Marshall Allman. That’s right Truebies! When we left the season finale, Tommy’s fate was unknown, but it looks like Janina has spilled the beans and fans everywhere are relieved that she did!

All About the Music

Aside from loving her character, what else does she love about True Blood? The music, of course! Janina herself is talented singer and she, like all fans of the show, sees how much the music influences and creates the scenes we all know and love.

It seems the world of the shape shifters is expanding with Season 4 and with Janina’s dedication to creating a well developed character, the who’s better competition between vamps and shifters will be heating up.

Ask Dr. L — All in the Family

For a small fortune (and the promise of a steady supply of medicinal quality V) TrueBloodNet.com has gotten Dr. L to agree to answer your supernatural medical questions. Ask Dr. L is written by Dr. L (any resemblance to any characters living, dead or undead is purely coincidental), also known as Doctor to the Supernaturals, and was founded by her mother, Philine Paullips. It is the most popular and widely syndicated supernatural medical advice column in this world — or any other. Known for its uncommon nonsense and immortal, or just darn old, perspective.

September 20, 2010

So Dr. L,

I’m kinda confused by the whole “making” a vampire thing or what did they call them, “prodginey?”  Eric even said, “the only vampire you can trust is the one you made.”   Is it vampire law or just the way vampires work that they can only make one vampire?  Like can Bill make another vampires now that he has Jessica?  If Jessica were to die can he make another?  Franklin also mentioned making Tara his bride, is the bride the same as a child?  Lots of weird relationships going on when it comes to the fangs.

-Genalogical Gary

Dear GG,

First of all, did you mean “progeny“? Because for the life of me, I can’t figure out what a “prodginey” is… Sheesh!
OK, now that we’ve had a spelling lesson, let me address your question. I personally feel this idea of vampires only being able to make one evil spawn of themselves is just to lull humans into feeling safer than they really are. In fact, I can see no reason that these foul creatures could not turn as many people as they had the opportunity to. I think they just don’t do it very often, because the unlucky folks they bite are just a food source to them, so they suck them dry and let them die. Ooooohhhh! I made a rhyme!
I am happy you brought up dear Tara. Such a beautiful girl, and a veritable punching bag for weird male partners! Poor girl. I wish she’d come see me for some much needed counseling, and perhaps a little of my Kung Fu training as well. Tara dear, if you’re reading this, call me.
Oh, and no, a bride is not the same as a child- unless she is a child bride- and that cracks open doors I have no intention of going through…

Hey Dr. L,

Okay so seeing Tommy changing into a dog for dog fighting, although awful, really got me thinking:  What other types of things do shifters do to be profitable?  Like is everything we see at a zoo a shift?  Do shifters run Sea World and are the dolphins really shifters and that’s why they can do all those cool tricks?  The circus lions?  Shifters too?  I mean if not, you and I should cash in on this and work with all the shifters in the land.  Can you imagine the success?

-Seeing Dollar Signs

Dear Dollar Sign,

I wonder just what you smoked or ingested before you asked me a question such as this. Did you get your hands on some illegal “V“? First of all, there isn’t a snowball’s chance in Tahiti that “you and I” will ever cash in on anything together.
As for real animals vs shifters, the less you and the rest of humanity know, the better. I fear these creatures are exploited enough, without the likes of Seeing Dollar Signs getting involved. The nerve!!  Get a job- I hear McD’s is hiring…

Dr. Ludwig,

Do you know whether or not the military accepts supernaturals into their ranks? I know that the supernaturals have skills and abilities that I’m sure can make the military an effective fighting force. But, I also know that some of the supernaturals can be rather unstable. Do you know the official stance?
Thank you ma’am,

Recruit Valesquez

Hello, young Recruit,

This is quite an interesting query. As you may know, I am involved in many highly sensitive government projects, including the military. So I am not at liberty to fully answer your question. But I will say this much, our military deserves our respect, our support, our highest regard, and super top quality rations, such as Kibbles N Bits and raw meat…

Whas’up D to the R to the L,

So my question goes a little something like this: What do the vampers do for Halloween? Like to me, it would seem like a little cliché for them to be outs and abouts. They are like Halloween all year round, wouldn’t it be a bit much for them to be all like Gothic on the one day a year its social acceptable and all that jazz? It’d be like putting chocolate syrup on a chocolate ice cream. Too much of a good thing yo. Maybe vampers dress up like normal humans? That would High-Lair-E-Us.

-Steve

Steve,

I’d like to offer you a courtesy consult with me to do a CAT scan to determine whether you actually have two brain cells to rub together. Trust me when I tell you, this is an offer not to be declined, as it would cost thousands of dollars. The trade off would be that I have total use of the results to use in my teaching, as proof that humans CAN live without a brain…
As for vampires and Halloween, that is pretty much any and every day for them, what with the blood running out of their eyes, no breath, no heartbeat, ice cold skin, and so on. So yes, their trying to pass themselves off as “normal” humans would be a real scream.
But what is wrong with chocolate syrup on chocolate ice cream?

Sam Trammell on Stripping Down for True Blood

Being a shapeshifter can leave you at a loss for clothes sometimes, as Sam Trammell could tell you. E! Online’s Ted Casablanca, who has named Sam his #1 True Blood hunk, thanked Sam for being willing to get naked so often, at which he laughed:

“I didn’t even really realize I was shirtless in almost every scene until I started reading about it everywhere.”

Well, the fans certainly aren’t complaining!

Sam also commented on the fourth season renewal for the show:

“You hope it happens, and think it might, but who really knows. We’re all really excited.”

He doesn’t know where the story is headed, but it’s a safe assumption that clothes will continue to be absent in Sam’s future!

Vampires and Shapeshifters … Monsters?

HBO’s seriesTrue Blood” has been able to bring  monsters such as vampires and shapeshifters to life, and by putting their a unique spin on the story,  has attempted to engender compassion and tolerance for this all but marginalized group.

What I and so many others find so fascinating  about the show is that it may also be a treatise on relationships. A prime example would be Bill Compton. He is struggling to hold onto some part of his former humanity, and yet, he is still a vampire; a predator in search of blood . He greatly desires to become a better “man” for his beloved Sookie but he attacked her great uncle Bartlett. Another example is shown in episode three of season one, entitled  “Mine,” when Sookie shows up at Bill’s house uninvited and sees another side of Bill. A much darker, more predatory side of him.  Sookie knows that he is a vampire. She may not like it or understand it, but she accepts it because she loves him.

One thing that makes the show unique is showcasing several different kinds of monsters.  To date, viewers have seen vampires, shapeshifters, maenads and zombies,  like Eggs Talley, who was under  the manipulative persuasion of Maryann. There certainly has been a plethora of monsters and also humans who behaved like monsters. The Rattrays in the first episode of the series are perfect examples of these wolves in sheep’s clothing. I particularly thought that this was a powerful storyline. The writers demonstrated to us that  although Bill Compton is a vampire, the real monsters were  Mack and Denise Rattray, who were human.

Another good example is Sam Merlotte, owner of the local bar and grill, and a shapeshifter. He is, by all accounts, a monster, a freak, but after he helped save Sookie’s life,She told him that he should let everyone know how special he is. She said, “With you, there’s not much not to love.” One has to wonder sometimes just how these guys endure things like loneliness, isolation and feeling like there is no one with whom they can commiserate with about their particular situations. One of the things which  I find to be thought provoking here is that the writers leave  it up to the viewers  to decide who the monsters are.

What also intrigued me was in the midst of all of the local murders, no one seemed to be above suspicion. Although it seemed like Jason Stackhouse was a prime suspect in the killings, the police also kept an eye on Bill, thinking that because he was a vampire, he must have had something to do with it. For a brief moment, it appeared that  Sam or maybe even Andy might be the killer. This is what great writing is all about.  Holding the viewer’s interest and keeping them captivated.  The real killer was not one of the “perceived monsters” but  a man who worked with Jason and was insanely prejudiced against vampires and anyone who had something to do with them.

It’s quite obvious that Bill struggles with his primal vampire instincts. He desires to evolve beyond what he has become, but he is still a vampire. I think that Sam also struggles with who and what  he is and how he feels others may perceive  him. Bill made a very lucid point when he told Sookie in one episode of season one, that she couldn’t go through life being afraid of what she did not understand.  I think that this is a powerful argument for those whom society would also reject, as no one wants to be seen as a “freak” or “outcast” just because they happen to be different.   Bill and Sam may not be typical folks but that does not make them “monsters.”
