True Blood 3.10 “I Smell a Rat” Review

Alexander Skarsgard True Blood Eric NorthmanTrust is a tricky thing–especially on True Blood, where most characters have dark pasts, hidden secrets, and conflicting emotions. And sometimes, if you trust the wrong person, you will end up chained in a basement.

Sookie the Fairy

Sookie has been wondering her whole life, and especially in these last couple of months, what she is. Bill gives her the answer: she’s part-fairy. Sookie goes from being disappointed, to confused, to scared, as Bill explains that fairies, aka “the Old People,” used to mate with humans sometimes, until they were wiped from existence by vampires because of their intoxicating, super-delicious blood. Sookie fears that Bill’s feelings for her might be because he’s addicted to her blood, but he pleads with her to see that is not the case:

“We grew into something much deeper. You must know that. You see the difference between the way I look at you and the way Eric and Russell do…Sookie, it is not your blood I love. I love you. You’re mine–your heart, your soul. And I will forswear ever feeding on you again if that’s what it takes to convince you of that. You have brought light back into my life, and hope, and gratitude. That is why I love you. Nothing else.”

Bill and Eric and the Game of Truth or Dare

Over at Fangtasia, Eric is putting his affairs in order with his lawyer. In his will, he leaves everything to “my progeny, Pamela Swynford de Beaufort,” as Pam paces behind him, angry that he seems to have given up. He explains, “Russell Edgington was maybe the oldest and strongest vampire on the planet before he eviscerated a newsman live on tv. Now he’s also the craziest. And his rage is directed at me. Do the math.” He insists that he is going to fight back, just as soon as he comes up with a brilliant plan to defeat Russell.

Eric goes to visit Bill, wondering if Sookie’s blood would truly allow him to walk in the sunlight. Bill reluctantly tells him that it only works for a couple of minutes, then you still burn. As they’re arguing, Sookie comes up to them, having just overheard Eric ask Bill why he doesn’t tell her the truth. She still has some doubt about if Bill is sharing everything he knows, but she’s certain that Eric isn’t trustworthy. Sookie insists she’ll never let him feed on her, but as he leaves, he says, “I won’t be around much longer anyway. I wish you the best, Sookie Stackhouse.”

Jason’s Dilemma

Jason panics after shooting Franklin, flashing back to Eddie and Eggs. Tara covers what remains of Franklin with dirt and, as the final act in the whole nightmarish experience, spits on him. Jason brings Tara back to his house for a place to unwind, surprised to find Sookie and Bill there. Sookie explains that she needs somewhere to hide because she’s being hunted by some werewolves and a vicious vampire. Tara blames Bill for all the trouble. Sookie starts to scold her, until she begins to realize the depth of Tara’s trauma. Bill speaks to Jason before he goes to sleep for the day about protecting Sookie until he returns.

At Merlotte’s

Nan Flanagan‘s PR campaign has moved into damage control mode after Russell’s “extremist” behavior, but the anti-vampire side uses the opportunity to gain ground. Thus, we see our old buddy Steve Newlin again! “This heinous act of pure evil is a blessing, actually, because it finally reveals the true nature of these beasts to us all. If I were a less of a Christian, I’d say, ‘Told ya!’ ” Arlene is watching at Merlotte’s nodding in agreement, which gets on Jessica‘s last nerve. Her fangs pop out, and pinning Arlene against the wall she tells her to stop being such a “narrow-minded, skinny bitch with a bad dye job.” Tommy gets totally turned on by this display of power. He tries to kiss Jessica, but she runs away from him. At the same time, Hoyt is getting jumped by Summer. She gives him the unwanted nickname of “Bear” and tries to help him move on from Jessica, but he clearly doesn’t take advantage of the situation.

Calvin’s Recovery

Lafayette knows there’s no time to get Calvin to the hospital. He takes him to his house instead, where he has something he know will cure Calvin’s injuries instantly. He pours a vial of V into his mouth, and Crystal and Jesus look on in shock as the bruises and cuts disappear. Apparently they don’t teach manners in Hot Shot, though, because Calvin jumps up in a rage at Crystal for letting two gay guys put “vamper juice” in him. The concern she was feeling for her father quickly vanishes when he hits her and tries to force her to stay away from Jason forever. She is dead to him, he says, as she runs away from him for what is hopefully (but probably not) the last time.

Sam’s Memories

Sam has a lot of painful memories running through his head when he gets back to his trailer after beating Calvin to a pulp. One incident in particular comes to his mind, back before he was the cute, scruffy, sweetheart we’ve all gotten to know. In 2003, he and his pretty blond girlfriend were running around, stealing jewelry, until she betrayed him. Her real boyfriend showed up, put a gun to Sam’s head, and took everything Sam had stolen. This side of him is new to us, and to his employees (who are really his only friends). They’re a bit scared of him at work the next day, except for Tommy, who was impressed by how intimidating his big brother was, and new waitress Holly, who’s a Wiccan tries to give Sam some herbs to calm his rage.

Arlene’s Confession

Arlene finally comes clean to Terry about the baby. She cries and tells him that Rene is the father and that the baby’s going to be evil. He looks at her for a few seconds not saying anything, and then he gives the best possible response: he hugs her and tells her he’s going to raise the baby as his own. “Do you hear me, Arlene? I want to marry you, and together we will surround that baby with more love than it can handle.” So sweet! Except Arlene still goes to Holly and asks her about those other methods of getting rid of the baby…

V Tripping

After seeing the power of V, Jesus is curious and wants to try it out with Lafayette so that their power can be enhanced and connected, or something like that. Whatever it is, the two of them go on a very strange, spinning V trip in which they see some Mexican healing woman, and Lafayette’s great-great-grandmother and Jesus’ grandfather, who both practiced magic.

Jason’s Confessions

Jason has been keeping a lot bottled up recently, and he finally shares it with Sookie. She says he should tell Tara before she finds out from someone else, but he thinks he’s protecting Tara from getting hurt more if she knows what he did. Still, when Tara’s trying to thank him for being so good and heroic and dependable, he can’t lie anymore. She kisses him, and he feels so guilty that he admits to shooting Eggs.

Retribution

Away from the rhetoric of talking heads on television, we can see that vampires really have been set back by what Russell did. Somebody vandalizes Bill’s house and sets a cross on fire in his yard. Jessica wants to go after them, but Bill calms her down saying, “It’s more important than ever that we restrain ourselves, even if it is against our nature.”

Sam’s Dark Past

Sam continues to be haunted by that night years ago. He had tracked down the couple who who cheated him, took his money back, and shot both of them. Killing the girl seemed to be an accident–she shot at him, and he fired impulsively. He was upset when she died, perhaps some residual feelings from their relationship, even if it was fake. Then, he goes over to the guy whimpering on the ground and shoots him in the back. Sitting in the woods, drinking and remembering, it’s hard to discern what Sam is feeling.

A Sookie and Eric Moment

What Eric said about not being around much longer made Sookie wonder what will happen to him, and she has another dream about him. While Jason is distracted with Tara, she goes to Fangtasia to see what’s going on. She wants to know why Eric and her intuition say Bill can’t be trusted. Eric ignores the question: “Here’s the truth. There are forces beyond even my control. And if I meet the true death without having at least kissed you, Sookie Stackhouse, that would be my biggest regret.” She resists at first but then stops pulling away, and they share a long, hungry kiss before she steps back. Then Pam interrupts, “Blah blah, vampire emergency, blah.” Pam wants Eric to give Sookie to Russell to save himself. He refuses, but Pam says she has no interest in inheriting his farm. She will do anything to save him, so he had better figure out a way to use Sookie if he’s so set on keeping her safe from Russell.

Russell’s Loss

Speaking of the lunatic vampire king, he picks up a male prostitute on the street who resembles his dead love. After they’ve had sex, he’s lying on the guy’s chest, apologizing over and over to Talbot that he wasn’t there in the end. Tony the hooker is getting really creeped out and tries to leave. Russell recreates Talbot’s “true death,” driving a stake into the guy’s chest and kissing him goodbye.

Jessica and Hoyt Connect

Hoyt shows up at Merlotte’s. He broke up with Summer, and he tells Jessica he loves her. She’s afraid of him finding out that she’s fed on people and even killed a guy. “Well, if you don’t wanna be with me because you don’t love me, that’s something else. But don’t tell me what I want and what I don’t want. That’s my decision to make, and I want you.” Jessica is silent for a moment, unable to tell Hoyt that she really loves him, so he walks outside. Tommy has been watching the exchange and goes outside to taunt Hoyt, “Nice work in there, dude.” Hoyt gives him a much-deserved punch in the nose. As Hoyt is leaving, Tommy shifts into a pit bull and attacks him. Coming out to admit her feelings, Jessica finds them and throws Dog Tommy into the woods. She barely even hesitates at the blood flowing from his arm, biting her own wrist: “Hoyt, I love you, too. Now drink my blood.”

Hello Crystal

Jason returns home from searching for Sookie and finds a very distraught Bill, who yells at him for breaking his word to look after her. Jason cuts in, all the emotions of the day exploding as he curses at Bill and kicks him out of the house, slamming the door in his face. He hears a noise back in the bedroom and finds a panther sitting there, who then shifts into Crystal. All he can do is call for his Mama.

Eric’s Dungeon

After doing some thinking, Eric goes back to get Sookie from his office. He picks her up over his shoulder and carries her to the basement. She screams at him, but he coolly clamps a chain around her neck and walks back up the stairs.

Now, I’m an equal opportunity viewer. For the same reasons that I have defended bad things Bill has done in Season 3, I’m willing to give Eric the benefit of the doubt that he is thinking about what will keep Sookie safe. He’s protected her in the past, and he clearly told Pam that giving her up to Russell was not an option, but as of now, his actions are frustrating. He probably arrived at the conclusion that drinking her blood will give him just enough of an advantage to go in the sun, if only briefly, to kill Russell while he sleeps. But why not TELL SOOKIE THAT?! She has mixed feelings about him, but it’s clear she cares for him to some degree and doesn’t want him to die. All he’s doing by chaining her up is making it so much harder for her to ever trust him. And if, as I suspect, people want to see Eric and Sookie in a relationship and not just having a fleeting physical attraction (although I’m sure nobody would mind that, either!), then he’s just hurting his cause.

I have no doubt all of you have very strong opinions on the subject, and I’m excited to hear them. So….what did you think about this episode?

Predictions-

Eric will create a whole diversion thing with Sookie Stackhouse and her delectable blood. Russell will take the bait, with Bill powerless, emoting like a mad antebellum suitor on the sidelines, unable to do anything but watch.

Pam, after feeding on Sookie, and enjoyin’ it up a storm, will own the proper SPF factor to take Russell down, thus becoming the heroine to her Godric.

Taras spit on Franklin’s shallow grave is going to be just enough crazy cajun voodoo to resurrect that beautiful english, ‘Evelyn Woods of texting’ badass, and he is going to get his true love bride afterall.

Hoyt and Jessica are even more connected, with her blood, and they will not go antiquing. They will perhaps hit the dogtracks.

Jason and Crystal will have problems when he realizes she will always be cooler than him. (separate lunch tables are tough on a relationship)

Lafayette will need his Mama, Jesus, and Alcide (just because… seriously, we all need him), to work some powerful mojo to bring Tara back to life. Maybe they need to sacrifice her mother…

Gran implanted the last true fae seed in Arlene right before Renee killed her, they gestate a little longer than humans, and Terry is the new King of Fairy land, allowing him to come and go through the puddle when he needs some peace. That’s all I got.

amanda

OMG hahahah I think it was sooo funny when Jason kicked Bill out of the house!!!!That was awesum!!!!!!

Sam

Okay, my two cents. We may think of Eric as strategic, but revenge is all about emotion, and I believe I recall Godric making some sort of comment about Eric needing to control his emotions in the Nazi Were flashback??

Staking Talbot without a fully evolved plan for dealing with Russell was not out of character because Eric is not as cool and emotionless as he originally appeared. I’ve really liked the evolution of Eric’s character this year, he’s getting more complex and surprising. In fact, one of my favorite moments in a previous episode was how honest he was with the Authority when Nan fired up her web cams. So calm. So honest. I actually found that really moving.

I like Bill’s growing complexity this season when we got to see more of his darkness. And I’m loving the Bill-Jessica, maker-progeny relationship that’s growing. Bill seems more comfortable in that role than as the romantic lover for Sookie. I think that’s part of his complexity. As much as he seems to hate being a vampire, he remains somewhat awkward with emotions that don’t reflect his vampire nature. He has that Old South/Antebellum sensibility toward women as needing protection, a reflection of his time as a human. It must be very difficult to reconcile that with the modern world. (And I think it adds to his compulsion to tell half truths. I’m sure that comment by Jason about lying and protection foreshadowed the problems to come for Bill and Sookie.) I think the easiest road for Bill would be as a predator and give into his nature, which is why his determination to be a better being/more human makes him so sweetly awkward and endearing (at least to me).

Random comments: my favorite parts of this episode were the walk and talk between Eric and Bill because they just seemed like…two guys. Loved the dog-Tommy toss by Jess. Loved the Bill-Jess porch moment after the burning cross. Loved Eric and Pam and the lawyer. Thought Jason rocked this episode and loved his kicking Bill out of his house. I think it surprised them both. And lastly, I think some of the scenes that people have said were slow in this episode were needed to plant the seeds for Season 4.

Sorry this is so long but it’s all been brewing in my head!

THis page rocks. So many insights I didn’t even fathom. Go Trubies!

Sandy

Anyone else notice that the name of Eric’s “windy shite-hole” was the same or similar to one of the many names Bill told Sookie that the Fae were called? Both started with an E.
Wonder if there is a connection there – maybe that is where Eric’s guilt is coming from?

Cheers
Sandy

    That’s interesting Sandy!

I don’t exactly no what word Pam was saying though. O think on youtube someone mentioned it is the correct way to pronounce (Ireland) Eireland. Mystical creatures such as faires are often associated with Ireland. There is that myth in Ireland about fairy mounds. If you stand on one of these mounds the fairies will capture you and drag you into the mound. You could be right Sandy. Why would Eric own a farm in Ireland? Just a thought to add to yours. I think Godric probably told Eric about fairies. Eric could have encounter some. At least, he did in the books. We all know the show is different so who knows.

      Sandy

That is the true myth. And the fae in the books did say they were from Ireland but had to leave.
Still, think the windy shite-hole is his ancestral property which is Sweden/Norse That was made clear already. Who’s to say they didnt have them there? Or maybe the mythology of his father’s kingdom had Fae in them?
      The possibilities are endless!
      Cheers

Ok, watched this again for the third time. Find something new each time too. This episode was just off for me. Not the best of this season but with that being said…..

I am very conflicted with the Sam storyline. Not liking his past or his dark side at all. I know he had a rough life since he was 15 and had to do what he had to do to survive, but didn’t like him being a 2 time murderer either. My heart went out to him. I so hope he finds the happiness he deserves in life, so writers, please write Sam a happy ending. Not sure I want Sookie with him at the end anymore either. I think he deserves better. She’s already broken his heart once.

Loving Terry this year. He’s a real standup man. Moving up to a favorite very quickly this year.

Not liking Calvin Norris’ character. Hitting his daughter for saving his life, not cool.

Could the lawyer drawing up Eric’s will be Mr. Catalaides??? (book reference, sorry). Anyone notice his ears were a little pointy??

Loved Bill comforting Jess with the cross burning. Their connection is growing stronger.

Love Steve Newlin, glad he’s back. Love his line “Told ya”. LOL.

I am conflicted with the Tommy/Jess/Hoyt triangle. I can see Tommy with Jess since they are both supes and the fit would be better, but Hoyt and her love each other. Am getting very interested in this storyline.

Hated the whole Laf/Jesus V trip. Almost like they were on “It’s a Small World” Disney ride. Went on wayyyyy to long for me.

I actually liked Jason in this episode. He has a lot on his plate. Glad he finally told Tara the truth about Eggs. Jason is a good guy, dim witted, but a good guy at heart.

Can’t blame Tara and Jason for the way they act against Bill. They can see right through him, especially Tara. She has seen the “real deal” Bill at Russell’s. She will never forgive him for not helping her with Franklin. And can’t blame Jason for rescinding Bill’s invitation into his house. He has enough to deal with and Jason hasn’t totally forgiven Bill for putting her in the hospital either.

More and more I’m believing Bill is connected with the AVL. He was very interested in Nan and the AVL news cast and used the phrase “our cause” when speaking to Eric.

There is definitely a trust issue here with Bill and Sookie. Bill has to stop telling her half truths. He told her about her being fae and about vamps being attraced to fae but omitted the most important thing–the daywalking–as to why the vamps were killing off the fae. She needs to know this. We found out the queen did send Bill for Sookie in the Bill/Eric faceoff. How can you proclaim to love someone so much and just keep telling half truths to them?? As Jason said to Tara “Protecting and lying aren’t always so different”. Bill being her boyfriend/fiance should not be keeping these important issues from Sookie. I just don’t understand why he keeps doing it and keeps getting caught over and over and over again.

Sookie’s trust is shaken with Bill. She may not want to admit it out loud or even to herself, but her subconscious is telling her the truth, not only about not trusting Bill but about her true feelings towards Eric. Through her subconscious Eric keeps telling her that it is more than just the tiny amount of Eric’s blood she has in her. She keeps denying it to herself but she’s also lying to herself. Sookie use your sixth sense this time.

Eric, himself, is very stressed. Pam is trying to protect Eric and keep him grounded like Eric tried to protect Godric and keep him grounded. I’m glad Eric can see through Sookie pretending to care about him. Eric knew the reason she came to see him, her shaken trust in Bill.

When Eric kissed Sookie, he was being sincere. I think he was even astonished by the look on his face as to how deep his feelings go for her. He hasn’t even had her blood at this point. And while Sookie tried to back away at first, she just couldn’t deny the attraction herself any longer. There are feelings there on both sides. Eric’s are stronger. He won’t give her up as Pam suggested. Was there a better way to safeguard Sookie, probably, but as Pam mentioned, time is of the essence here. Think of something now. Whether Sookie sees it or not, there is a method to his madness which we have yet to see.

And, Yvetta, how could she think Eric was going to leave her something in his will?? She’s known him what a couple of weeks??? She is a woman scorned now. And, if she is a witch or supe of some kind, I can definitely see a spell coming on Eric of some kind. Will it be an amnesia spell?? Time will tell.

Building up to next week’s episode and the finale. This is going way to quickly which also means summer in the US in almost over. 9 months is way too long to wait for S4. AB could you throw us a bone over the long, long break with more minisodes or something???? Pretty please. 😉

    ~ Caitlin

    Hi jaxx,

I agree with practically everything you said except the V trip. Yes, the Laffy/Jesus V trip was to long. However, it filled the viewers in on Jesus/Laffy’s past. Since they spent a significant amount of time on it, it had to be important.

I thought the same thing about Yvetta. I couldn’t believe Yvetta thought Eric would leave her money in his will over Pam. I hope it was worth Eric saying that to Yvetta. It’s probably going to come back to bite him in the you know what. I especially liked his delivery of those lines to her. It was entertaining.

I forgot about Mr. Cataliadas.(I’ll have to watch it again and look at his ears)Your right that probably was him.

I’m also upset about the Sam storyline. I don’t like that he is a murderer. I still agree that Sam is to good for Sookie. Actually, Terry is becoming the best catch in town.

I loved when Jason kicked Bill out his house. Obviously, Jason felt horrible about Sookie leaving. He didn’t need to be reprimanded for it. Bill doesn’t exactly keep Sookie safe all the time either.

I just hope Pam doesn’t do anything to desperate to save Eric. She probably will though. Definitely, there is a method to the madness.

Hope we see more of Rev. Steve and his cheap set. The postmortem was funny! Now all we need is Sarah. I think they got divorced?

      jaxx

Hi Caitlin. You are probably right. The Jesus/Laf V trip is setting us up for something bigger, probably voodoo or witch doctor/warlock type history with Jesus family. Hope they explain soon, only 2 more episodes left. I wonder if Ruby Jean will show up in the finale to save Lala.

Sunday’s episode previews look very interesting. Then the 2 week break. This season went way too quickly.

        ~ Caitlin

It would be nice if Ruby Jean is in another episode. I would like to see Lettie Mae. She has not bee on for awhile.

          Sandy

Lettie Mae has a lot of power too imho but she drank to forget it and hides behind god to hide her guilt over it.

          Cheers
          Sandy

        ~ Caitlin

I wonder if Tara has some hidden powers? Sandy mentioned that Lettie Mae has powers but tries to cover them up by drinking and religion. It wouldn’t be that surprising if Tara had powers to. Maybe everyone in Bon Temps has some type of power. Either that or supes are just drawn to the area. Of all places Sam picked Bon Temp to reside. Of all the places Eric picked Shreveport.(in the books I think he came bc of the Louisiana Purchase) I would like some people in the town to just be human with no powers.

          Sandy

That’s just a guess – or she saw the powers of her sister and turned to drink and god (people hide behind god a lot here in the South).
Maybe BT is a safe haven for supes and thus the reason for being there? I’m just tossing out ideas and could be completely wrong!

          Cheers
          Sandy

          jaxx

Hi everyone!! I also think Tara will have powers. If her mom, Ruby Jean and Laf have something going one, she probably would too.

I’ve wondered for a while if BT is a portal to some type of supe energy or safe haven. Good theory there. Maybe the portal is through the cemetery. That would sure explain a lot. lol.

    Ollie Chong aka AdoreBill

    Hi Jaxx,
Great overview and two things stood out for me that you stated. The part about Bill being connected to Nan and the AVL. I too noticed that when they mentioned them on the newscast Bill became extra concerned about it and seemed to get anxious. Hmmm, why the concern?

What I found interesting between the Tara and Jason interaction were the words that he use. “Protecting and lying aren’t always so different” and right away the first thing that popped into my head with Bill and Sookie. How Bill is always trying to protect her by maybe lying to her about why he really came there (if Alan goes there which I think he will). Those words that Jason said made me think this is perhaps the same reasoning that Bill is saying to himself and using as Jason did. Unfortunately as Jason found withholding information will come back to haunt you and cause repercussions which will probably happen to Bill with Sookie.

      ~ Caitlin

      Hi Ollie,

Say Bill is working for the AVL. I wonder if that would make Bill higher up than Eric according to the vampire hierarchy? Usually, the hierarchy is based on the vamps age. I don’t know if the AVL and “Authority” are considered seperate entities from the hierarchy. We still don’t know much about this “Authority”.

      jaxx

Hi Ollie and Caitlin, I agree. Bill was extra interesting in the news cast. I really think he is part of the AVL and sent to the Queen by them. The queen thinks Bill is doing her bidding but maybe Bill is part of a bigger picture. Pretending to be aligned with the queen on behalf of the AVL (hope all this makes sense, I’m rambling here. lol).

Also, AB and writers wouldn’t have had Jason say that sentence about protecting and lying if it weren’t for a reason. Everything on this show is said/done for a reason. I think that pertains not only to Bill and Sookie but about everyone who has claimed protection by lying in one way or another over someone on this show. I have a feeling a lot of truths are going to come out soon, if not in the finale, then next season. 🙂

Venus In Furs

I’m willing to bet that Eric will lure Russell with Sookie’s blood (he’s probably never had fairie blood) and he will lead Edgington to believe that he will be able to walk around in the sunlight. I mean, wouldn’t a 3000 year old vampire looooove to walk around in the sun again? I think Eric will omit the fact that the fairie blood will only protect him for so long. Then, when Russell starts burning up in the sun, Eric will take his chance and try to kill him. This is my prediction.

I actually think that Eric will let Sookie in on his plan & she might actually agree to it.

caisandra

It seems that Eric would anticipate Bill coming to rescue Sookie when he chained her up. so, it’s probably a way of getting Bill’s attention quickly (since it is evening and Russell is very likely coming to get Eric soon). Bill might even be the best one for killing Russell, since he has had so much of Sookie’s blood. Just being able to withstand a little sun might give him an advantage against Russell.

But, I’m really hoping that Sookie can focus her power and use it to resist the others. Like Claudine, she could zap anyone who comes near her, including Russell.

Sandy

Even I have been in 2 minds over this episode *sigh* and I’m an Eric ‘shipper so this should have been a great episode. The ladies that wrote this arent totally new – they wrote an episode earlier in the season (it was also weak imho) HBO has the “behind the episode” video with them. (look under all videos)

Bills eye-brows are driving me insane. (something I never thought I would see my self write haha) It’s like they glued extra hair on them for that “scary old dude” look.

Now – beyond these forums, I’ve heard a lot of people say they think the acting on the show is really bad. I havent thought the same but curious what others thinks and if there is anyone who’s acting – to you – isnt up to snuff. Again, I havent seen it and we’re pretty good at spotting bad acting!

Cheers
Sandy
who also needs to watch the episode again but did feel unfulfilled last episode and not “on the edge of my seat” as before.

Blipsterfarian Logic

Eric brings Nan proof of Russell’s nefarious activities and she puts it all back on him! Tells him to solve it and refused to get involved in any way. Now he is on a rampage and how knows where it will end!

~ Caitlin

I didn’t feel this was the greatest episode. It felt like a lead in episode. It’s the calm before the storm.

This was the episode for revelations!

Did they really have to make Sam a murderer? He is always getting skrewed over by women.

What a stand up man Terry is. He is the true catch in that town even though he has (pts). Terry has a heart of gold.

Jesus a shaman? It didn’t seem like a good sign when Jesus explained that his abuelo had things planned for him. Maybe Jesus is a demon or ‘dark sorcerer’. In next weeks clip there is some type of weird looking creature at Laffy’s. He could be hallucinating from the V trip though. I’m getting a bad feeling about Jesus and I hope I’m wrong.

Hoyt and Jessica were sweet. Maybe at some point Hoyt will get turned. Jason has been calling Hoyt ‘Bubba’ quite a bit this season. I don’t know if it is just a nod to bookies or there is more meaning.

I’m surprised that the Eggs thing came out this week. I liked the Jason/Tara kiss. I hope she can forgive Jason. Tara really cannot catch a break. Jason should forget about Crystal. I still think Jason and Tara could have potential someday. Really, someone needs to tell Jason that he is part fae. Even though he does not have powers this concerns him. If supes know Sookie has a brother they might assume he has powers. Who knows maybe Jason could develop some down the road?

Eric really told Yvetta. Honesty, I don’t know why she would think he would put her in his will. Eric’s words to Yvetta might come back to haunt him(If Yvetta us a witch?)

Another Eric/Sookie dream sequence. Finally, a real kiss. Then, he chained her in his dungeon. I’m sure that there is a method to the madness. I’m not going to think the worst. I think Eric wants to keep Sookie in one place. She is a loose canon. Did he really need to chain her up? He could have left her in the room. I still have faith in Eric even if he is lacking it in himself. Most likey, Eric is going to drink Sookies blood. How is Russell going to get her blood? Spoliers from awhile ago showed Russell in the sun.

Even Sookie does not think Bill is being completely truthful.

The Russell scene was disturbing. Poor Tony!

Maybe Alcide will be back next week!

I really like this quote. Pam to Eric “I have no interest in inheriting your farm on ( ), that place is a windy s-hole.”

It’s hard to believe that only two episodes of True Blood remain.

Caitlin – in the “South” the term “bubba” is used a lot. Some people are called that their whole lives and stick with it into adulthood. I use it but for me (and how it originated in the south – brought over from the UK) when I still lived in Australia we call babies “Bubs” or “bubby” my s.o. and I will sometimes call each other that instead of “baby or hun”.

You may be on to something – did you read the books? Bubba was a famous person that would freak out if he heard his real name.
I’m kind of glad they have not added him in from the books tbh but can see if Hoyt was turned on ‘accident’ after nearly dieing then having to hide out from the town (since they are sure he’s dead for example) and call him “bubba” because he wasnt turned correctly. (Jessica wouldnt know how to turn him properly either – she’s way to young a vampire to be a maker imho).
    Who knows!

The masked guy with horns and all that is Jesus (wearing the same wife-beater) that’s my guess tho. He doesnt have to be “bad” to be half daemon tho. Although, half daemons are known to do bad things they can be terribly sweet otherwise. “shrug”

The shows ending sort of told you the rest of the finale Eric uses Sookie to confront/deal w/Russell. Sookie of course wont die but will she go back to Claudine while there and told of Bill? Hmmm. I’ve said before the big cliff-hanger will be Bill’s betrayal. JMHO but pretty sure they are keeping that till the end. Sookie used this way is a whole new concept so we will have to see how it goes – I’d rather see her kicking but right along with them but Sookie is always damsel in distress rather than kicking butt like she should be!

    Cheers
    Sandy

      Hi Sandy,

You mentioned that these writers wrote another episode this season. I thought they did, but I don’t remember which episode they wrote.

I know that Bubba is also a southern term. However, I did read the books. This could be an inside joke for the book readers. It’s possible that there is more to it. Your right demons are not all terrible. I do want Jesus to be a nice guy.

This episode is similar to how I felt about the 10th book. I still like it but it seemed off. I guess it was supposed to be more of a set up episode. I understand how you and many others feel with it being so close to the finale. Probably, True Blood will not be on Labor Day weekend so we will have to wait an extra week for the finale.

In my opinion, this was a good Jason episode. I was proud of Jason for kicking Bill out of his house. Jason felt awful enough about Sookie. He didin’t need a lecture from Bill.

We finally got the long awaited Sookie/Eric kiss. Then, it was tainted by the dungeon scene. Desperate times call for desperate measures. At least, Eric didn’t want to use Sookie. Most likely, he will use her. If Eric doesn’t defeat Russell, they could all die. Hopefully, Eric at least asks for Sookies permission before drinking her blood. I still have faith in Eric. It would be nice to see a Eric/Pam flashback before the season ends.

I think most of the acting on this show is wonderful. At first, I was not to keen on QSA. However, she is growing on me. Crystal is starting to annoy me.

    sp

Yes, it’s interesting the Vamps aren’t after Jason or at least looking into him. Maybe because Hadley said Sookie was telepathic and Jason wasn’t, the Queen figured Jason wasn’t of interest?

I read somewhere Jason’s ‘sexability’ and his athletic abilities, including perfect aim, maybe Fae traits…

      ~ Caitlin

I think those are the fae traits Jason got. You would think they would still look into Jason just in case. I still think Jason should be told the truth.

DannyJane

I may do my own in-depth analysis of this episode or other parts of it later on, but right now I feel I must present

MY DEFENSE OF ERIC NORTHMAN

I was surprised to find nobody commenting on Eric’s tossing Sookie in his home-made dungeon and walking away.

Here’s mine. Eric did right. You heard me. Eric did right.

Okay, Sookie–for possibly the first time–has to realize just how dangerous is the game she’s been playing with Eric’s emotions. Please don’t tell me she hasn’t an idea of what she’s been doing. She knows Eric is interested in her. He’s shown it in every possible way. And she has never been slow to take advantage of it. Neither has she failed to pile on the verbal abuse (“I prefer cancer.”) in the process. Eric or Eric’s resources have saved her life more than once. Eric’s taken bullets for her. He’s faced werewolves. He’s hired supernatural doctors. He’s danced around the rules of the world he lives in just to accomodate her and I’m not discounting the selfishness of his motives from the equation.

Not that Sookie hasn’t done services for him in return, but she does seem to see him as an always-available source for help and/or information on demand (“Where’s Bill? I think you’ve got him.” “Why shouldn’t I trust Bill?”)

I know I will hear about how much she loves Bill (trustworthy or not) and how Eric is (or is not) to be trusted, etc., etc. But during the run of this show every time Sookie has been in trouble or needed help or needed muscle–to whom has she turned? Eric. Every time. How long was it going to continue before Eric would have had enough?

Let’s please remember that Eric’s in deep sh*t right now. He’s got the AVL, the Authority and Russell (everybody thinks I’m insane-o) Edgington all gunning for his admittedly gorgeous ass. He really has NO time for Sookie’s issues. His life is on the line. The life of his progeny is on the line. If Pam can be considered Eric’s child, and clearly they both see it that way, he HAS to find a way to protect her even if he, himself, does not survive. And that’s exactly what he’s doing–even if it’s trying Pam’s patience to the limit.

Now, under Pam’s prodding it’s quite possible that Eric has, indeed, formulated a plan to battle Russell Edgington and I’m sure Sookie’s fae blood is part of the equasion. I sure wouldn’t put it past him. He certainly is a past master of playing both ends against the middle. Further, putting Sookie in the dungeon has a bunch of advantages. First, she’s accessible and easily at hand–and he doesn’t have to worry about her taking off the way she did to Bill and Jason. Second, she’s in the safest possible place he can arrange. Third, she is removed from Bill’s interference, which, as we have seen, is a good thing where Edgington is concerned. Fourth, can we all say, “BAIT!?”

I’m also aware that even when he appears to be betraying someone to whom he has an attachment, he’s usually acting for their ultimate benefit as far as the circumstances he finds himself in will allow, as for instance his covering Sookie’s mouth when they were both Russell’s “guests”.

But none of it really matters. I don’t care how much he may or may not love Sookie, or what his other schemes might be–if it came down to a choice between a possible future lover and the life of my child I’d make the same decision Eric apparently has. And I defy any parent, human or vampire to gainsay me.

    Antonio el hombre lobo

Ok DJ you have presented some strong and valid points here.
Eric doesnt have either the time or the energy to deal with Sookie’s nonsense. He has his own pressing issues to deal!
You are right about Sookie..She certainly know where to go and Who to turn to when she needs help! She uses these guys just to cover her own self! She acts as if Eric,Sam and Alcide are available for her Anytime she sees fit to get info and assistance! Alcide took a beating for her and she didnt even thank him for protecting her!! She’s Never thanked Eric for What He had done for her either! Whats Wrong With Her??
Anyway good post and This episode certainly was Not up to par with the rest of the season.

    ~ Caitlin

    Thank you Danny Jane,

I completely agree with your post. This is life or death for Eric. I feel like Pam should come before Sookie. It was obvious Pam felt hurt by Eric. “Your going to choose a human over yourself, over me.” Pam cares nothing for Eric’s fortune. Basically, Pam conveyed to Eric that she would die for Eric. He has two women who are loose canons. Eric would never forgive himself if Pam died becuase of him. No, Sookie does not realize how high the stakes are for Eric. She is more concerned with Bill’s secret. Eric is trying to save them all. I do believe Eric is proctecting Sookie by putting her in the dungeon. Maybe, he could have gone about things diffently. Yes, he will use her. Eric will also try to save Sookie. Sometimes she does act without thinking. You are right about the scene at Russell’s house.

Good observation Antonio! Yes, sometimes it seems like Sookie only thinks about herself and Bill (which is understandable). She manipulated Alcide into going back to Club Dead. She put his life in danger. Now that he is assoiacted with her, Alcide is in danger. Sookie walks all over Sam. Eric’s helped Sookie a lot. You think Sookie would realize that Eric cares for her. Last season when Eric/Sookie were in the Fellowship. Eric said that Bill would kill everyone to save Sookie. Sookie said to Eric something like “Why aren’t you”. To be fair, Sookie does risk her life for other people. She also puts people in danger sometimes.

trueblooderic

There seems to be a gap in the story as to how Queen Sophie Anne found out Sookie is a fairy. Hadley would only know about the telepathy and nothing about Sookie being a fairy (which was even unknown to Bill- and he takes her blood). So…how did Sophie Anne know Sookie is a fairy if she hadn’t met her before? Can anyone provide some theory?

    Ollie Chong aka AdoreBill

    Hi trueblooderic,

You brought up some very good questions. How would Hadley know about fairies and that Sookie is one. Hopefully they will fill us in in the next two episodes. Also the part when Eric asked if it was true that you could walk in daylight. Did Hadley tell him this? Is this part of the legend? To tell you the truth I am drawing blank unless someone told Hadley maybe Claudine?

      pbt

I suspect that Eric has some knowledge about faeries. Perhaps he has even known a few in his 1000 years. Or perhaps QSA filled Hadley in on what Sookie is. Remember the Queen did confide in Hadley about intimate details of her Queendom. A fact that Eric was surprised about. The Queen confiding in a human.

I suspect that the Queen will be showing up in the next episode or last and paying a visit to a certain “procurer” named Bill Compton. We know that Bill failed to mention the daywalking to Sookie but confirmed it to Eric. Bill also failed to mention that the Queen sent Bill to Bon Temps. Something else that Eric got Bill to admit to reluctantly.

        Ollie Chong aka AdoreBill

Both vamps are hiding stuff from Sookie and don’t reveal anything to Sookie for “her own good”. Whether telling her why he originally came (but fell in love with her) to Eric not telling her that he will heal from the bullet wounds and tricking her to drink his blood or not including her in his plans since they do involve her (kidnapping her and chaining her up in a dungeon). I think the actions that Eric does and withholding the truth behind those actions are far harder to forgive then a withholding a truth that is irreverent to current feelings he has for Sookie. He came and fell in love, classic storyline.

Either way Sookie will be angry at both for a while.

          ~ Caitlin

I think Sookie might rescind both of their invitations to her home by the end of the season. Sookie is going to need a break from vamps. I agree with pbt. Since, Eric’s 1000 years old either knew some fae or knew about them. Also, Godric could have informed Eric about the fae.

          sp

Yeah, I think the season will end with a rescinding. And a curse on Eric.

Sookie forgave Bill very easily for lying about turning a 17 yr old into a vamp against her will, so I guess she’ll forgive him anything. But then this is about *her* so it’s far more important.

      Sandy

On that my guess is “myth” – the queen seems to be adept at myth – she knew about Maenads too. It was probably a myth regarding fae – telepathy being a sign. Maybe QSA thought the last of the fae were from the BT area? Then someone comes along with telepathic abilities to peak her interests.
      That’s my guess.

      Cheers
      Sandy

      trueblooderic

      Hi.

After reading one of Sandy’s comments below, it could be that since the Queen knew of Maenads, she probably thinks that telepaths are linked with fairy blood. It is the only logical explanation I can use to fill in that missing piece of the puzzle. Hopefully, it will be revealed.

karin

i am a rabid 62 yr. old true blood fan. After last nights ep, I went on to facebook page and titled my thread on tb discussion board, this episode sucked tonight. oh it was bad. they did not need to go to such lengths with Jose and Layfayette-it was like a bad acid trip or a ride at disneyland. They could have set up their powers another way. Way too many people are finding out the healing props of V. Sookie doesn’t know how to use her light from her hands, is anyone going to teach her. Claudine trusted bill enought to tell him. Eric may want to keep sookie around, but he would throw her into a oncoming train for his revenge. He is so selfish, Pam wanted him to give her to Russell? took pam down a notch for me. I thought she liked sookie. Ick, this episode just sucked. Tara and her quivering chin is driving me nuts. Ok rant over. Good review.

jaxx

I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought this episode was off. Now that I know there were new writers, that certainly explains a lot.

I’ll have to rewatch again before commenting and take the new writers into consideration.

For me, even with the hot Eric/Sookie scene, not my favorite episode this year.

    Sandy

ya. Can’t put my finger on it but the whole beat to it was “off” music was great – the tempo for the episode felt off for me.
SMs make-up wasnt right either. I think it would have a harder impact on the audience if Bill looked looking like he does in the land of the fae than the “menace” make-up but that’s just MO. LOL.
Hot kiss but booooooo and it wasnt the actors fault!
If the Fae were wiped out by vampires and Eric’s been around for a long time I reckon he has heard “tales” of them too or Godric’s sanctimonious as Lorena would say had told him, saw them, experienced them what have you – maybe there is a sense of guilt that puts Sookie ahead of himself. (although that’s really a rubbish plan since if he goes and Bill goes – Sookie goes – who is he saving then)?

    Cheers
    Sandy

cox

I sure I will be the odd man out, but I thought last night’s episode was by far the worst of the season. How many ways can the writers make Sookie look supid. She has new found powers which are completely useless. Enough with the dansel in distress. I can’t say there were many highlights. The Hotshot story line is a bust. As much as I like the actress Tara needs to go.

    Isis Nocturne

Cox, you are definitely not the odd one out. I agree 100% that this was the weakest episode of the season so far. *smh* Never a good idea to give an episode leading to the climax of a season to new writers!

TypeO

I’m moved to comment for once, because I found this last episode to have the most turgid, Soap-Opera-esque quality of dialog & plot movement of any previous episode….in 3 seasons.
The writing team on this episode, (Elisabeth Finch and Kate Barnow) I thought really ‘dropped the ball’ (Alan Ball, pun intended). Most of the dialog seemed straight out of “All My Children”. Or B-movies. Yes harsh, but it really didn’t pass muster with the regular high standards of this great show.

IE: Eric: “..And if I meet the true death without having at least kissed you, Sookie Stackhouse, that would be my biggest regret.”
(grab, clinch). Cue the orchestra. Is this the cool, complex vamp Eric in True Blood, or a b-grade Gary Cooper film?
Corny, melodramatic over-emotive tear-jerk spiels like this everywhere…with little depth or gravity…or real consequence.

And total plot/character illogic, as well- Sookie moved to grateful TEARS by Bill’s plaintive recital of why he loves her…which she IMMEDIATELY contradicts by sneaking-off to ask for truth validation from.. Eric!…whom she has NO reason at all to trust at this point. Oh, yeah, dreams trump reality. Arggh. Cue the organ music.

One more ripe example of character illogic: Eric settling his “human-world legal affairs” as a major priority… at THIS critical dramatic time?
Also, his mourning & fretting of his potential “coming demise” from Edgington, after JUST being so fearless and purposeful in his desire for revenge…which is still incomplete? This is not a viking’s behaviour, let alone a vengeful vampire! Pam playing the dew-eyed daughter about this self-pity nonsense?
Un-vampirish, un-Eric, un-Pam…and just lame.

So many more character & dialog gaffs that just killed the tension in building-up to Series 3’s final 2-show conclusion. Its my hope we don’t see more of these scripting missteps as this overall entertaining season finishes.
Anyway, I’ll call this last one “As The Stomach Churns”, and try to let it fade.

    Isis Nocturne

TypeO, I COMPLETELY agree! I think a huge part of the problem is that this episode had new writers, and it was so very apparent. This episode was not up to par with the previous ones, and that’s a huge disappointment as we head towards the final two episodes of the season.

      ~ Caitlin

I didn’t think the episode was that bad. It wasn’t the best. I think it was more of a set up episode. I agree the dialogue was a bit off at times. Usually, Bill doesn’t swear. More likey, Eric would say his biggest regret is not completing his 1,000+ years quest for vengence. Also, Eric would regret the final death. Eric’s regret would be not sleeping with Sookie. It seemed a little strange that Eric didn’t tell Sookie Bill’s secret. Yes, I know they want to drag that out even more. I think Nancy Oliver is the writer for next week. I love her writing. The dialogue for the roof top scene was so beautiful. There is so much more to cover and only 2 episodes left.

    Antonio el hombre lobo

I concur. I agree with most of you said. This episode was crazy just all over the place! so many secrets revealed! too much going on to keep up! that scene with Russell and the male prostitute? disturbing and morbid! That scene with Laffy his bf and their V trip just unnerving not to mention morose!
I agree with you though there was a soap-opera-esque quality about it…This show is Far Too Good to become yet another Soapish drama!! Again,Not Enough Bill & Sookie! I feel So badly for Sam! This poor guy has been treated like dirt since the series began…Now I think he’s headed for a breakdown!
Sam,It appears,Also has a darker side and a skeleton or 2 in his closet! Poor Sammy!!
Its obvious Now that Both Bill And Eric have designs on Sookie!
Its clear that they Both want her for Something! What is Bill hiding..some kind of dark secret? Was He involved in the deaths of her parents? Is Eric Really trustworthy??
Does RE want to use her “abilities” and fae blood to further his Own ends toward power? Where is Alcide in all of This??
What of the Weres…Will they take astand against being dominated by Vampires? Will They seek power and control for themselves? Will Alcide become their new pack leader??
    Questions questions!
What of Sookie? Why did she leave the safety of her home to go to Eric? Why would she trust him? Why did she seek out His counsel after Bill’s declaration of love to her?
How will Hoyt be affected now that hes had Jess’s blood?
Too many questions to be answered in ONLY 2 MORE Episodes!
I Cannot Believe it!! Where did All the time go??
It seems that we were waiting forever for this season to air
So Much spaeculation….WHO abducted Bill? Would Sam find his real family? How would Tara deal with the loss of Eggs?
How would Jason deal with killing him? Remember??
What a season it has been?
WHAT a Ride!! This has been Unbelievable..Hasn’t it?
The Alcide~~Debbie Pelt thing has been involving!
I’ll miss Talbot And Lorena~~Although I couldnt stand her!
I’m glad that Joe Manganiello will be back Next Season!!
I like the character of Alcide Very Much!! It will be interesting to see his “dark side” We know he Has one, right?
It seemed that THIS Year, All of the principle characters experienced a “meltdown” of sorts! Sookie and Bill’s relationship may be tested even further!
If Sookie Is being sought after by All these Supes because of her fae blood and abilities The Maybe she would have been better off going away to college instead of hanging around BT!

Not one of the best episodes…I agree Next week should be better!

      ~ Caitlin

      Hi Ollie,

At some point, I think Alcide will become packmaster. I’m sure Alcide has a ‘dark’ side like everyone else. Eventually, viewers will see it. Sadly, it seems as though Alicde does not like being a werewolf. I don’t think he will really want the job as packmaster. However, Alcide will accept it because he is a stand up man.

I’m upset they made Sam a murderer! Also, Sam is headed down that dangerous direction towards more violence and alcholism. I just hope Tara does not get together with Sam. At this point, the last thing Tara needs is to deal with another alcoholic.

Your right where has the time gone. Soon we will have to wait a year for season 4. This finale will be bittersweet.

      ~ Caitlin

SORRY ANTONIO I ACCIDENTALLY CALLED YOU OLLIE!

melissa

Good recap. For some strange reason I think Eric is delving a plan to kill Russel and I dont entirely trust Bill. He s got something hiding up his sleeve but this is what makes for good drama.
I knew Crystal and her family was something. Here comes the werepanthers I wonder if it her that is going to turn JaSON to a werepanther? I think so!
How sad it is that we only have 2 eps left.
Season 4 should be interesting.
Thx AB
