Why True Blood is Better Than Twilight

true-blood-season-2-posterx300Are you a die hard True Blood fan? How about the Twilight saga? Do they even compare — or are they in totally different universes?? The Indiana Statesman published an article recently that laid out the reasons that True Blood is way better than Twilight — as if the True Blood fans hadn’t figured that out!

I’m going to go out on a limb and say that True Blood and Twilight are the two most popular vampire “worlds” out there right now. Sure there may be other TV shows and books, but these two series (and I’m including the books, TV shows, and films associated with them) are by far and away the most recognizable at the moment. And they have inspired a bitter rivalry amongst their fans! Twilight and True Blood do have some similarities in core stories — vampire/human romances, special powers like telepathy, and supernatural characters to complete their casts (think werewolves). But that is pretty much where they separate.

True Blood comes closer to following long established vampire “rules” – no vamps out during the day (remember what happened to poor Bill when he bravely tried to rescue Sookie from Rene?), no entering into houses where they haven’t been invited, and wooden stakes an silver definitely have a negative impact on True Blood vampires. Not so for the Twilight crew — they just turn all “diamonds and glitter” in the sun (I saw the movie — not the best special effects effort they could have put forth!), they come and go where they please, and the only thing that kills a Twilight vampire is being pulled apart limb from limb and burned. Ouch.

Twilight and True Blood are aimed at totally different audiences – so True Blood gets to be way edgier and scarier. Alan Ball and HBO are not afraid to show the fans the darker side of vampire life, so we get lots of blood and gore. Twilight, in contrast, sticks to the “PG” version of events. I don’t even think Alan Ball and HBO know what that means! And let’s talk about Sookie Stackhouse and Bella Swan — those two shouldn’t even be in the same sentence! The heroines in each story are so different from each other it is like night and day. Sookie is a much stronger main character than Bella is.

The Statesman article points out that in True Blood, there are fewer instances of sexism than Twilight — something I personally had never thought about. Twilight‘s heroine, Bella Swan, does put off a “need to be rescued” vibe, and she does let Edward have an unhealthy dose of control over her (really girl – stand up for what you want!). Sookie, on the other hand, doesn’t hesitate to get right into the action – beating people to death with shovels, marching straight into Maryann‘s den of iniquity, telling Eric just what deal she’ll strike to guarantee Lafayette‘s safety. She is one mouthy girl, and her confidence is so sexy!

The number one reason, according to the Indiana Statesman, that Twilight bites in comparison to True Blood, is the general content and meaning of True Blood. As they put it:

1. True Blood says something. In “Twilight,” the vampires are just vampires.

In “True Blood,” the vampires are used throughout the show as a metaphor for the marginalized in society-specifically homosexuals.

Unlike “Twilight,” in the “True Blood” universe, vampires are not a secret. So the show’s larger theme is how society adjusts to their presence.

The show makes frequent use of news clips covering the debate over vampire marriage and the opposition from right-wing religious groups. The show cheekily plays up the homosexual metaphor with signs reading “God hates fangs” and references to vampires “coming out of the coffin.”

True Blood has fans everywhere. Even at the Emmy awards — the whole audience (which included more than a few celebrities) cheered when they showed True Blood clips. What better accolades than your peers cheering you on? That must have been so great for the cast of True Blood! Are you a fan of True Blood? Do you like Twilight too? Is it possible to appreciate both? Share your thoughts with us!

I always have been fan of vampires they are hot, intelligent fancy among other things but when the twilight saga came I become very upset about the vampiric world. One day I went to the bookstore and I saw the cover of true blood first novel I began to read it and I became a trueblood fan. I think trueblood is much more complex and real ( in vampire world rules ) than in twilight only stupid teenage girls fell in lov with such a sparky idiot vampire with only a “romance” without erotism that is one of the things that are characteristic of vampire. On the other side we have Bill yes he love Sookie but he doesn’t sparkle with sun he burn out and he have tons of great sex with Sookie he is a REAL VAMPIRE he is really erotic tipe of vampire that’s why Trueblood kicks the Twilight’s spaky ass.

At this point, It would be hard to keep drawing comparisons between Twilight saga and True Blood. Each of these are different and are targeted for a different audience. TB is definitely more for adults. Twilight keeps within a PG-13 mode.
For example,Some comparisons may be made with the love triangle bill-sookie-sam vs. edward-bella-jacob and there are similarities some anyway between edward and bill…jacob and sam
But any further attempt seems futile when you consider that there is No 1 in TL to compare to Eric Northman!! Or Tara Thornton or even Terry Bellefleur!
There is No Lafayette Reynolds either!
These 2 series can only be compared So much and No more!
In TB for example, synthetic blood makes it possible for vampires to mainstream with humans In TL Only a fraction of the vampires~~~namely the Cullens try to evolve beyond feeding off of humans They feed off animals.
There is a human/vampire relationship
The gal is a target for trouble because of it
There are others who think that she should not get involved with a vampire.
Both guys are very protective of their ladies
Thats about it!! The similarities end there!
True Blood may not necessarily be better just different
TB shows a darker more brooding view of vampires and their relationships with people.
Bill is not reprimanded for dating a human~~as was Edward in New Moon, but for killing 1 of his own kind for her!
Bill “made” Jessica she is his charge Edward made no1 and he does not want to “turn” Bella.
I suppose Both try to show that these vampires are capable of being more than what we thought.
Plus TB is about those who are marginalized by society there are socio-political messages and metaphors Whereas Twilight is just about teen angst and trying to fit in Which is something that many people outgrow as they get older.
Twilight is good…TB is better

I LOVE Trueblood. Its my Favorite Show. To chose between Trueblood and Twilight, Theres no Competition. Trueblood all the way. Twilight is Getting old, and fast. Everyone is Over Obsessed with Twilight.
1. Vamps out in the Daylight? Ugh, NO!
2. Real men don’t Sparkle.
3. Sneaking into People’s Houses and watching them sleep? No.. Stalker!
4. Only Dying by being Pulled Apart? Noo. what happened to Wooden Stakes?
All in all, Twilight is nothing like Real Vamps. They don’t even follow Vamp rules. Its just a Stupid Love story Thats going no where. Twilight will end with the 4th movie, But Trueblood will go on.
With Trueblood, Its not Just about the romance Between Bill and Sookie. Its about all the characters and all thats happening. it doesn’t just focus on Sookie and Bill Its about all the main characters.
With Twilight its all about Edward and Bella, and occasionally Jacob. What happened to all the other Characters? They’re important too.
Trueblood is so much better.
And Eric is the hottest Vampire i’ve ever seen.
I wish i could meet Him<333 It would be amazing(:
Anyway, Trueblood is better and its gunna stay that way.

Oh and By The Way, If Given the choice where I’d rather be?
Forks Of Course!! I’d choose Forks and La Push Over Bon Temps Anyday!! Sorry,Sam Guess you’ll just have to run the bar without Me!!

    TruEricFan

I choose Forks too, but not because of Twilight, and not necessarily in Forks…I have wanted to live in Washington State for the last 15 years or so…or Alaska…in the Denali region, but again, have wanted to for longer than I can remember.

      antonio

Really?? I have also wanted to see WA And AK..I’d also like to see OR as well. As I have heard that Portland is growing by leaps and bounds! I Would Also Love to see Vancouver,BC!!
There is just something about the Pacific Northwest that has always appealed to me. I guess because of the rugged, natural beauty and the Incredible landscape! I Love TB But Bon Temps IS Fictional! Forks IS a Real community in Clallam County,WA!
Plus there is the natural splendor of the Olympic National Forest and the Beaches of La Push and Grey’s Harbor..Somewhat further down. And the Seastacks? I have Never seen Anything like them…Its Amazing!! Alaska seems to be Awesome, too!

1 More thing to consider here. Next Month Twilight:New Moon will be released in theaters across the US. Many will flock to the theaters just to get their Vampire/Were fix! Some will be “dis-enchanted” by the prospect of waiting to next spring for a new season of TB..and will try to “replace” it with Twilight.
Plus, Next Year In June TB will face off yet Again with TL as Twilight:Eclipse hits theaters on 6/30/10. Eclipse based on book #3 of the TL series is for many the Best part of the series!
Its where Bella must make a choice between Jacob and Edward.
Sort of a life or death thing As Bella Cannot remain with Edward Indefinitely and NOT be turned at some point into a vampire! If TL should gain some speed and ground in TB’s long absence Then it May be tough to beat next year in June.
Think about it! There Are Some who might think that Edward & Bella are THE Vampire love story. Let’s examiine this for a moment William Compton 173 years old married once had a couple of kids served as a soldier in the american Civil War
Still looks pretty darn good Loves Sookie Stackhouse Cannot walk out into the daylight.

Edward Masen Cullen 91 years old Younger has Eyes that change color Trained to drink Only the blood of Animals
Loves Bella Swan Cannot read her mind Can walk around in daylight hours Cannot reveal himself in direct sunlight other wise he “sparkles” Faces the wrath of the Vulturi to protect Bella

Both Bella and Sookie go to save the men they love. Both save their “lives” Sookie saves Bill in the 1st episode of TB from “drainers” Bella saves Edward from revealing himself out in the midday sun subjecting himself to the wrath of the Vulturi in New Moon.
Bella makes a life and death choice Sookie does Not
Bella must contemplate giving up her mortal life Sookie does Not have to.
Bella Must become a vampire to be united to her beloved there is NO other way Sookie wants to be with Bill Always but yet she does Not want to become 1 like he is.
A lot to think about!
I suppose there is No real way to compare these 2 as they are both differentand yet similar.
I think that True Blood shows the dark side of what Vampire life would be like gritty, raw, graphic harsh
Twilight i think shows the psycho-emotional dynamic of what Their Vampire life would be like. TL certainly seems a bit more romanticized than TB.
I think that TB is better But I like the TL books very much also It would be hard for me to say whether i like Bon Temps or Forks Better.

    antonio

    1 More thing here,
In Bon Temps, Vampires have come “out of the coffin” are integrated into society try to “mainstream” with humans. Can drink synthetic blood and have a Vampire Defense League for poltical protection.

In Forks,Vampires are a “secret” No 1 is supposed to know they really exist…Hence They must be subject to the laws and rules and governing of the Vulturi in All Matters concerning Vampires.
Laurent,James And Victoria are Renegades who seek to do as they please and disregard the rule of the Volturi.
Vampires Are permitted to live off of humans but Only if they do it discreetly.

Sam Merlotte is a Shifter who can turn himself into almost Any animal that he has imprinted upon. He does this mostly for his own survival and to help out when he deems necessary

Jacob Black is a Shifter A Were/Shifter meaning that He can Only “phase” into a Wolf and What a Big Freakin’ Wolf!
Jake Unlike Sam is part of a tribe a pack a brotherhood
Jake Unlike Sam works for the good of the pack, who actively patrol the borders of La Push keeping it safe from Vampire intrusion.
Jake Unlike Sam Shifts whenever he senses that Vampires are near He and the whole pack also phase to keep in contact and protect innocent humans from Vampire attack.
Jake Unlike Sam made aa vow to protect Bella and her vampire child for as long as he is able.
Jake phases in front of Bella Only to protect her. Not to lie in bed naked with her as Sam Merlotte did with Sookie.

I just wanted to compare and contrast some of the nuances of Both Stories Even though this particular post seems to favor Twilight. They ARE different And Each is special in its own unique way.

      TruEricFan

The whole point of Bella having to choose and Sookie not having to (which she may need to if she plans on being with any vampire for any length of time) is that Vamps are still a secret in Twilight. If they weren’t, the story wouldn’t have played out the way it did.

I don’t see True Blood and Eclipse being in any sort of competition next Spring either, they pull in such different audiences, AND it’ll premier during the week, and True Blood shows on Sunday nights. I love both, but I won’t miss True Blood to go see Eclipse.

      TruEricFan

Sam didn’t shift so he could lie in bed naked with Sookie. He fell asleep and it wore off. He didn’t mean for her to ever see him like that (under those circumstances). Sam WAS protecting Sookie, as Bill asked him to.

antonio

I suppose that would mean that Jacob Black is the Sam of Twilight. I don’t think that EC is the Bill of TL So I’m NOT gonna Go There!! LOL

antonio

The fact of the matter is True Blood IS Better than Twilight.
I like them both..But TB is So Much Better!!
I would agree with Stephen Moyer when he said that “Edward Cullen was the “diet coke” of vampires..He’s So Funny!
I think that both of these series have found their way into popular culture. I’d Love to see a True Blood edition of Scene It…as there are for Harry Potter and for Twilight~as of Oct.
A True Blood version of Monopoly might be nice.
I Do like the Twilight Saga But TB Rules!!!
Its Just an Incredible show!! As for Emmett Cullen being the strongest vampire I think that Eric Northman could kick his butt!! Pam & Chow could kick his butt!!
Sorry Twilight but in a face off against True Blood YOU LOSE!!!
Go Team True Blood!! Go Team Bill!! Team Sam Team Eric,Pam Chow…

    TruEricFan

HEY! Don’t knock Emmett!!! (He’s my favorite…I loathe Edward lol) I agree that Eric and Pam could kick his butt…not so sure about Chow (he’s not my favorite) 🙂 Let’s just say Emmett is the strongest vampire that sparkles 🙂

I do agree with you, True Blood is better. I love Twilight and I love the Southern Vampire series pretty equally, but when it comes to what’s showing on the screen True Blood wins there, hands down.

      antonio

Emmett is ok. Pretty much ALL he does is Antagonize Bella!
He teases her, mocks her, talks down to her..He’s just Downright Nasty! Do you remember in Breaking Dawn,When shortly after Bella becomes a vampire, He challeneges Her to arm wrestle with him When She wins He is Furious!! Do you remember He was so Angry he punched a great big rock and it disintegrated! Sore Loser!! In BD, He asks her what I thought was an innapropriate question about her and Edward “So, Did You do it?” That was not only disrespectful but NONE of His Buissness Then He elaborates on his sex life with Rosalie ” We tore the place apart!” Like She really cares??
Emmett is a big bonehead! He’s much too full of himself!
      Edward is humble by contrast.

      antonio

Emmet Cullen is a big bonehead!! Throughout most of the series he is mean to Bella! I think he felt intimidated by her after she became a vampire and discovered all these new strengths and her mental power to form out a shieid to protect her family.
He’s just downright nasty to her! He’s much too full of himself!
Edward is humble by contrast. His mate Rosalie Hale could also be very bitchy! Remember in Breaking Dawn how it seemed she wanted Bella to die So that She could take HER Baby and claime it as her Own??
      Strange to say the least!

        TruEricFan

Have you read the exerpt from Midnight Sun yet? It sheds a whole new light on Emmett, at least to me. When I read that, I started to love him. Yes he does antagonize Bella, but if you remember, she adores him regardless of that fact 🙂

          antonio

Hi TrueEricFan, I guess everyone has their favorities.
I’d like to share My fave Twilight characters with you.
          Alice,Jasper,Jacob and Seth Clearwater.
Alice is I think My favorite because she is kind, honest and friendly. She has visions of future events( albeit, these are subjective and can change at any moment) She has a keen sense for what is true and real. In Many ways she is Bella’s Best friend. Plus She’s a Real Sweetheart!
I like Jasper~~~I know he attacked Bella in NM But he was still adjusting to the “vegetarian” evolved lifestyle~~~.
He can sense things like harmful intent in people.
He can raise adrenaline levels to give energy OR Soothe people with his calming power….I like that because Many times he was able to calm Edward and Jacob when they felt like fighting and was Almost always able to calm Bella.
I like Jacob Black Because he was So Very devoted to Bella.
He wouls stand by No Matter what! Even if it meant leaving His pack to protect her!!
I like what he said to Bella in NM “I Know what he did to you,Bella I would Never hurt You like That!”
Plus, it was Jake who rescued Bella when she tried to kill herself after Edward left her!!
Jake seems More Real than Edward in the story for me.
Which Is WHY I wanted her to choose him over EC!
I like how Seth choose to standby Jake even if it meant deserting his pack! He believed in Jake That much!!

antonio

Those are All good points TrueEricFan. With regards to the Twilight series (the books) SM pretty much wrote things her own way. Vampires who sparkle in sunlight? She has also departed from traditional lore regarding Werewolves. In her Twilight books there are actually NO Werewolves per say. Jacob Black and his whole tribe are only Were-Shifters,Not lycanthropes in the more traditionall sense. Their ability to phase or shift is a skill with which they are born and learn to develop and utilize over time. Jacob is Not a Were he was never bitten or infected by another were who “made” him. In fact he tells Bella that the first time he “phased” was after he had an argument with his dad..that must have been something to see, huh?
The pack of brethren of which Sam Uley is the head,at least until Breaking Dawn, when Jake defects,They patrol the woods and areas of La Push their reservation. They phase only when a bloodsucker is near their lands. They do this to protect their borders, their tribe and innocent humans from vampire attack.
They are kind of like a motorcycle gang who goes around trying to protect people and Not like your typical Weres!
In book 2 New Moon Bella suspects that maybe Jake and his “brethren” Are Werewolves. There are many hikers and tourists that are picked off. There are also stories about huge wolflike creatures in the woods near La Push. Jake comes to sense her growing mistrust of him He says to her “I’m NOT a killer,Bella..Trust me”
In Ms. Meyer’s books She breaks All the rules when it comes to vampires and Weres.
It’s a different approach.
Stll though, it doesnt seem to make much sense with regards to True Blood~~~~One Long bite from Bill to turn Jessica Hamby into a bloodsucker….Several shorter (but still agressive) bites NOT to turn SS. Hmmmmm!
And what about Lafayette Reynolds? He was bitten at least a few times by Eric. That scene where Lafayette ask Eric to “make him a vampire” He then calls Pam and Chow over “Its Mealtime!”
and they attack him like wild animals….Wasnt That scene Cool!!
Shouldnt He be 1 of them by now??
To Me, its confusing, At this point Both Sookie and Lafayette should be vampires and working for Eric Northman Don’t you think??
I guess Neither AB nor any of these other vampire writers give us the “textbook treatment” on the world of these monsters.
I Do thinkits weird though Vampires who sparkle in sunlight??
What Next? Werewolves who Shine before Silver???!!!

antonio

It just doesnt make a lot of sense. If you follow more traditional vampire lore, For the victim of a vampire it takes about 3 or 4 bites before they become one themself. In Bram Stoker’s novel,It only took 3 bites to change Mina into an undead bloodsucker. In the space of 2 years,Bill Has bitten Sookie At Least That Many Times!! These are no “love bites” or pecks…He reallly Bites her like a wild thing! Remember that intense “love” scene in Episode 2 season 2??
My point is It makes No sense that after All these books,After maybe 3 years of Bill biting and feeding off of her..Not to mention Him giving Her His blood~~When a vampire does this it binds his victim to him forever (according to lore)
He Cannot continue to feed off of her for an indefinite period of time without Some ill effect!!
Either She Will become a vampire~~An undead monster like Him
OR she Will die from blood poisoning or his “strong vampire venom”! There Are NO other ways for Her~~~Unless She is More than human. If That WERE the case He would Not be able to feed off of her, though. Confusing!!

    TruEricFan

You’re right, according to ‘traditional’ vampire lore, she should be a vampire. Charlaine wrote her series so the vampires had to basically drain the human of blood then give them their own to make a vampire. In Twilight, it only takes one bite, as they are venomous. I don’t think you can really compare vampire stories in that sense, since they differ in so many ways. If you read the Dresden File books, they have vampires that feed off of love, blood and hate. In the undead series, Betsy got attacked by ‘rogue’ vampires (I don’t remember what MaryJanice called them) and didn’t turn into a vampire until she died. Each series is different in that aspect, at least a little. Also in the Anita Blake series, you can catch lycantrhopy by being scratched by a were in it’s animal form. Such is not the case in Twilight (remember Sam scratched Emily by phasing too close) and in True Blood it hasn’t even been touched upon yet. The great thing about writing fiction and paranormal is that you can make it whatever you want, and it’s not necessarily wrong or right…just good reading 🙂

miliey

But twilight’s about Bella, Edward and Jacob. And trublood is about sookie, and whatever comes alond. ***

miliey

Twilight and trueblood is two different things. Its not right to compair, twilight is a love-story. And trueblood is.. Uhm, love? yeah, but in another way. I like the twilight story better, just because i do. But twilight is about Bella, Edward and Jacob. But trueblood’s about Sookie, and whatever comes along. So really, theres no comparison.

antonio

Here is something Else to think about with regards to TB.
At Some point Sookie Stackhouse would Have to be turned in a vampire, herself. Bill feeds off of her blood,He bites her
You would thinkk at Some point toxic levels of vampire venom would build up in her bloodstream.
I think that Queen Sophie-Ann would want her to be converted as well. She is a human dating a vampire Illegal and unthinkable in the vampire world. She knows far too much about vampires
Plus several vampires were killed in a bomb blast which could easily be blamed on her and her bonehead brother for their involvement with the fellowship of the sun congragation.
I dont think Sophie-Ann or Eric really trust her.
As a human she can oppose the vampires way, lifestyle and laws.
If She were to be turned she could be a powerful ally to the vampire world as she could read minds.
Maybe Sophie-Ann has something up her sleeve as far as Sookie and Bill are concerned…I think she might want to punish Eric for getting sloppy with the V dealing.
Bella Swan was turned into a vampire mind you she was pratically dead at the time after having lost lots and lots of blood in childbirth with her vampire/human hybrid child.
It stand to reason that SS will either be converted to a bloodsucking monnster like Bill OR She will die from blood poisoning from his numerous bites. There ARe NO other options for her at this point. At least in My humble opinion.
He cant go on feeding off her indefinitely.

antonio

I like both. True Blood is better of course…I like Both.
Maybe some of you did not like the TL film.I enjoyed reading the books. Book 3 Eclipse is My Fave along with Book 1.
Breaking Dawn the final TL book~~like it or not it certainly has a lot of suspense and drama! Remember the scene where Bella bears her vampire/human child?? Remember the part where she dies for about 10 seconds and is revived by vampire venom?
Remember the intense burning/choking sensation when she was turned into a vampire??
For those of you who have read the series. TB IS better no doubt
Before I knew of its existence, I thought TL was pretty cool.
And yes I still like the books!

Sasha

ok im one of those “used to completely love twilight until i figured out it sucks” girls and i still except twilight, i will go and see all of the movies just to see how they turn out, but i am full on True Blood fan. I even just bought all the books today, but i do a gree that True Blood and twilight are WAY different in terms of style and Awesomeness(yeah i know lame word but hey im a teenager so what do you expect). True blood will always keep me in suspense no matter how much i have wacthed to season, where as i always fall asleep to twilight. There are many more ways that True Blood is better that neither I nor you said but i wont say them all. Just saying that True Blood rocks!

lani

Gotta be “True Blood…” Twilight is for kids…(I’m a gal of few words??!..sometimes..)

antonio

I dont like making comparisons. Something like which is better Star Trek or Star Wars? Ridiculous…Because their are fans who are fiercely devoted on BOTH sides! There may be fans who love BOTH series as well! Its Not always a question of which 1 is better. Its about trying to appreciate what makes each 1 special.
I like Both of these series. As for Twilight I enjoyed reading the books very much. The film was ok fairly good i thought.
As a person who has been struggling with issues, not unlike Bill or Sam, Reading the TL books was a consolation to me …they got me through some hard times, emotionally.
Depression can be quite difficult to deal with Even with medication and therapy. Twilight the 1st book especially helped me to see life through a new perspective through new eyes.
What impressed me was that Edward Cullen was a vampire and yet he was Not evil~~as most were~~. Although he was an outcast and a bloodsucking monster he seemed more like a guardian angel.
His love for Bella was fiercely passionate and so devoted
“I’ll Always love You” He tells her in book 3 and he means just that For All eternity!
Bill does love Sookie But he Does get pissed off at her from time to time. I think Bill needs to learn to be unconditional in his love towards her and let go of the willful bullshit “I’m right You are wrong!”
Reading Twilight the 1st book especially helped me to believe again in Love. EC was Always there always watching always ready to help. It helped me to find faith in both myself and the people around me. struggling with major depression i came to believe that unconditional love and acceptance simply did Not exist. Reading Twilight helped me to change my mind and believe.
Both TL and TB have helped me to let go of painful events and have courage to move on and trust myself and others.
Both have been invaluable to me.
Twilight…the books and True Blood the HBO series have helped mee find the courage to be me and to let go and move on.
If the Cullens,Sookie and her Brother Jason,Sam Merlotte,Tara Bill and Eric are Freaks Then SO Am I….I am 1 of them!
For Me, Its about Much more than an arbitrary series of books
Its a way of Life!!
Thank You for permitting me to speak my mind

TruEricFan

I love both. What I like more about True Blood is it’s made for adults, there’s sex, violence, cussing, it’s got the ‘scare factor’ too. Twilight is a very innocent teenager movie. I think it’s perfect for the audience it was made for. I’ve read both series numerous times and I just can’t pick a favorite. Enjoying Twilight has also given me something in common with my ‘tween daughter, but she also loves True Blood. As far as the acting goes…True Blood wins hands down for that one. A certain ‘heroine’ in the Twilight movies couldn’t act her way out of a paper bag…I was very distressed to see that her acting abilities didn’t improve between Twilight and New Moon

Melissa

I love both, and believe that this article is obviously biased.

For one thing, one story isn’t more “sexist” than the other. They are just two different characters with two different personalities. And both characters are capeable of getting annoying at times.

I like how True Blood gives us a dark look at the vampire/supernatural world and overall human behavior when it comes to choices and how we respond to things as different people. And I like Twilight for the simple fact that it’s a true love story with it’s own interesting little twists and creative/different perspective on what a world with vampires would be like, not souly created just to show a “PG” version of a life with vampires.

Isis_Nocturne

LOVE True Blood (but really not a big fan of the books though I intend to continue to read them as they come out), and ABHOR Twilight! Not only was the author nasty to me in person, but I couldn’t even get through the first book! (It was seriously that badly written!) And as an English major, that’s a big sign…

So right now, I’ll happily stick with True Blood and keep up my pursuit to get my FAVORITE vampire series made into a tv series as well.

    TruEricFan

What series? I personally can’t wait for Anita Blake…

      Isis_Nocturne

Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Dark-Hunter series. Probably one of the BEST character-driven series I’ve ever read! Let me put it this way: when I read the SVM books, I’m bored out of my skull, because everything is 1st person POV, and through Sookie’s eyes, each is a wretch in their own way. I won’t even go into how unlikeable a character she is in the books. (I honestly can’t stand book Sookie!) But when I read Sherri’s books, they’re completely intrigueing because of how REAL they all are. Sherri has a Master’s Degree in Medieval history, and she was only a few units off a Master’s in Ancient history when she finished school. Because of that, her Dark-Hunters know all about the times they lived in, the periods that came after that transition, etc. And the heroines are NOT wilting wallflowers. Each HEA is strong enough to stand next to her man, not behind him. Plus, there are rumors brewing that Sherri is strong enough as a writer to take the step that could turn many fans away: She might have a gay couple in one of her upcoming books. (I’d call her and ask, but she’d probably just say something mysterious, then tell me never to bring it up again and hang up on me.) In other words, Sherri is one of very few authors I will go out and buy the day a new book comes out!

As for Anita Blake… I’m really not looking all that forward to that. I prefer the older books in the series, and I’m not happy with the changes in the more recent books. When I read romance, I’m reading it looking for a strong story with a couple dealing with being in a relationship as the center of it. For me, Anita Blake is now more smut than story.

I should have clarified, I think. I don’t believe they COULD make a show for the later Anita Blake books, they would be porn, and I think even IFC has standards regarding that lol. I think the first 6 or 7 books would make a good series though. I haven’t heard of the series you mentioned, I am going to have to look for the first book and see if I want to buy it. I like/love all 3 series (Sookie, Twilight and Anita) but I prefer books that aren’t told in the first person, you see SO much more of the story. Could you imagine True Blood if it was written closer to the books?

Just FYI, For Sherrilyn Kenyon’s books, I think you should read the prequel book “Fantasy Lover” and the first book “Night Pleasures” together, since the prequel just sets up the series and really has nothing to do with it. The first, however, makes more of an impression on you because the main character in Fantasy Lover is directly involved with the main character from Night Pleasures.

Another series I really like is JR Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood… Have you read those?

BTW, I agree on the porn aspect of the Anita Blake series… But I thought they were toning it down and making an “anime” – well, the American idea of what an anime is anyways…

I’ll definitely read the prequel before the first book, thanks for the heads up on that 🙂

I plan on buying the Black Dagger Brotherhood, I have heard nothing but great things about it. I am waiting for SFBC to have a good sale so it doesn’t cost so much. It’s hard to find any complete vampire series in the used book stores in this area, (surprisingly)and I live in St. Paul! Maybe I could have luck on craigslist?

If not, try Amazon.com. Since they have people who sell used books on there, you can usually get one in very good condition for a lot less money. If I want to try a book by an author I’ve never read, that’s usually how I get the first one. If I really end up liking it, then I’ll go to a store and buy the others as new books.

Thank you Isis for the input on various vampire books out there to read. Personally I know I need to find something to fill the void until True Blood returns in June and have been searching a series to read that would be similar to True Blood. I have heard of the Dark Hunter series, the Black Dagger Brotherhood the Laurell K Hamilton and Chelsea Quinn Yarbro series. Would love any input on which to start with. 🙂

Personally, I have a HUGE connection with the Dark-Hunter series. The prequel book came out in 2002, when I was tiptoeing towards 13 years old. I read it and loved it. Then I kept up with it and eventually through going to various signings, I became friends with the author. At this point, I ALWAYS buy them the day they come out and read them then and there. There are a couple more recent books that I feel are weaker than the rest of the series, but overall, it’s got the BEST characterization I’ve ever read! Each book is in the same world but focuses on a different couple, so nothing to get tired of. Plus, all the characters appear pretty consistently in the background of each others’ books. Read those first! You’re gonna go nuts with the happiness!

After that, I’d read the BDB series. I really enjoyed those, but I thought the most recent one was the weakest in the series. But again, they have great characters and full plots (just like Sherri’s Dark-Hunters), and they make you FEEL for the characters!

Have you tried Lynsay Sands’ vampire books? The first 3 are best, but I’ve read all of them except the last one (can’t afford to buy it yet), and I’ve enjoyed each one.

And if you happen to also like witch romances, I highly recommend Annette Blair’s “Accidental Witch” trilogy followed by the “Triplet Witch” trilogy. The first set leads you to the second set. Great characters, funny scenes, touching plotlines…

*sigh* Yes, I read a LOT of romances! Ask me about any if you have questions (exception being western romances. I’m not that big a fan of cowboys), and I’ll do my best to help you find something to fill your True Blood void!
