True Blood’s Alexander Skarsgard Feels at Home in Sweden

Alexander Skarsgard True Blood Eric NorthmanIn a translated  interview with skarsgardnews.com, Alexander Skarsgard discusses his fame since True Blood and his current work. He also has a few suggestions for the American media.

The article discusses Alexander’s failed attempts at a film career in his native Sweden, which prompted him to give America a shot. A fear of type-casting has always been a concern for Skarsgard so he chose his roles carefully.

Now, with his huge success on HBO‘s True Blood as vampire Eric Northman as well as the mini-series, Generation Kill, Alexander may have acted himself into a type-casting corner. But he doesn’t let that stop him.

At the time of the interview, he was in Sweden filming a new movie, Melancholia (which includes his father Stellan in a role), a story where the planet Earth may not exist for much longer. But that’s all of the plot Alexander shares. He’s more than willing to discuss working with the director, Lars von Trier. Skarsgard enjoys the freedom von Trier encourages, comparing it to a Hollywood director who maps out every detail to a scene.

“There’s a freedom and playfulness. Yet there is no chaos. And he’s [Lars von Trier] sharp as a blade in his comments. As an actor, you feel completely confident that it will work even though you have no idea how the end result of the movie will turn out.”

He also points out the obsession American audiences seem to have with the naked body. Or at least his naked body, citing the media frenzy over the recent Rolling Stone cover. And while Alexander admits discussing his lack of clothing gets old, he always reminds reporters where he’s from: Sweden.

Me too. I agree with both of you. Sick of the nudity questions with Alex. Ask about his other siblings, his young days, growing up in Sweden, where he’d like to be in 10 years and with who. Enough with the question already, it’s been done to death.

It’s crazy isnt it? As a mother one hopes that your child will find the perfect someone when they grow up – sexuality is natural. But we really hope they will never meet the ugly side of humanity! It’s unnatural! In the US they show the unnatural everyday and freak out on the natural!
I have 3 children – my eldest is 21 and my youngest is 7 with my son (Alexander lmao) in the middle – almost 17. The boys are growing up very normal in a very harsh conservative area. My 16yr old is bi-sexual which is hard enough to deal with going through puberty, let alone in an area that hates LGBT community! The last thing he needed was a family that didnt support him. Now he is adjusting to it as he hated himself for it (cutting etc). He once said to me “I want to be normal – grow up, get married, have kids. Why do I feel this way Mum”? Took all I had not to cry for him right there and then. My answer was that he was perfectly NORMAL. We love him exactly as he is.
(we knew before before he did. We saw it around the age of 3-4. He used to be very flamboyant, loved to dress up and all that – plus he crushed on Leo DiCaprio in Titanic haha big clue)!

Cheers

I agree Sandy,
There are a million other questions people could be asking Alex. Swedes don’t care about nudity that is why they have nude beaches. It is true, many Americans have body image issues. Why? This society propagates it. We’re not used to seeing that much nudity on tv. When I first started watching True Blood I was surprised by the amount of nudity on the show. Your right Sandy this culture is heavy on the violence though.

It makes me cringe to hear the same questions asked over and over. Surely there is something else to discuss with not just Alexander but all actor interviews.
As an Aussie/American it totally confuses me that the US is still so puritanical in many ways. Like the freak out over the JJ boob during Superbowl.
This country is so sexually repressed – it needs a collective good f*ck IMHO. I’m constantly amazed at the violence allowed without a blink but a boob at prime time or the bum of a streaker at a footy game must be blacked out. WTH?! And then there is the whole “sock” issue – a flaccid penis looks ridiculous enough and they want to make them into sock puppets? Honestly? *smh* (ty, Isis btw for that term)

I’ve never had an issue with my own nudity. Used to hate having to keep my top on at the beach in the US (and would often “skinny dip” every chance I could – pool or ocean it feels fantastic). The only issue I have with going topless is that burnt nipples hurt! LMAO. I guess it’s how you are raised – nudity was never a focus and as the baby in the house it was common to see my older sister or mother getting dressed or sharing the loo in the morning because there wasnt time to wait outside while mom or sis was having a shower. As for sex, I was raised very openly – my mother never hesitated talking to me (and she’s a good Catholic girl too), having a sister 12yrs older than me meant little was ever hidden. We are a very close family that love to talk, joke and drink wine when together – we love to laugh. Wine is another thing that is poured freely, my mother will not hesitate to offer my nearly 17yr old son a glass at dinner – he doesnt like it tho! Rather teach him how to properly drink than let him learn to binge drink outside of the home with mates.
