The Annual TrueBloodNet.com Truebie Awards (TATTAs)
March 1, 2010
True Blood scored a fist-full of nominations this awards season, but largely lost out (to Mad Men, curse them) apart from a People’s Choice Award for Best Television Obsession and a Golden Reel Award for Best Sound Editing: Short Form Dialogue and ADR in Television.

The Collected Wit and Wisdom of True Blood’s Jason Stackhouse
February 24, 2010
It seems that on every True Blood fan site, blog, and wiki, it is always Eric, Eric, Eric, or Bill, Bill, Bill. We think it is time to redress the balance, or as Jason would say, we need a divergence
In this article we celebrate that fine, dumb as a box full o’ hair, sexabilities-god, Jason Stackhouse. And it is his mind (or lack thereof) that we love, as much as his ripped physique.
So to that end here is the collected wit and wisdom of Jason as revealed in True Blood Seasons 1 and 2…
In Season 1 we got to see the more (ahem) physical side of Jason, so the audience didn’t really have a chance to appreciate his native wit and unique take on life. However, in Season 1 Jason revealed that he was perceptive:
Jason to Lafayette: “You’re wearing gold pants!”;
and witty, even under extreme duress:
Jason to Lafayette: “I got gout of the dick!!!”
But Jason’s greatest contribution to the wisdom of the ages (and a warning to men everywhere) was his “big bad of crazy’ rule:
Jason to Amy: “I should’ve known something wasn’t right the second you walked into my life carrying that big bag of crazy! ‘Cause any woman with a purse that big’s bound to have something in it I don’t wanna know about!”
In Season 2, with his body not much required for anything but exhibition, Jason really hit his intellectual and philosophical straps.
The audience discovered he was a biblical scholar in this exchange:
Luke – “Think you walk on water don’t you Stackhouse?” Jason – “I’m pretty sure that was Moses.”
And an existential philosopher of note with:
Jason to Andy: “It’s like if a tree falls in the woods it’s still a tree, ain’t it?”
and how about:
Jason to Andy: “Do you think Sam could turn into a chicken and lay his own egg. Wouldn’t that be weird, eatin’ something that just came out of you?”
and
Jason to Sam: “I smite thee, Sam Merlotte. DIE!”
We all marvelled at his musings on life, love and the nature of good and evil in these exchanges:
Jason to Sookie: “When you love somebody, you gotta love it all, or it ain’t love.”
and
Jason to Luke: “Evil is making the premedicated choice to be a dick”
and
Jason to Andy: “Do you think Sam ever turned into a dog and then made it with a female dog?”
and , of course:
Jason to Steve: “I reckon I’ve already been to heaven and it’s inside your wife.”
And who could forget that subtle and profound question:
“Explain Europe to me?”
Wouldn’t we all like to have Europe explained. Anyone?… Anyone?… Alan Ball? … Anyone?
Ah Jason, Jason, Jason, we love you and, yes, we too “love the smell of nail polish in the morning.”

Ryan Kwanten Describes Life and Work Since True Blood
February 16, 2010
A complete departure from his character, the dim-witted Jason Stackhouse, Australian actor Ryan Kwanten is more of a thoughtful, reserved kind of guy. In an interview with the German website, myFanbase, he sheds some light on Jason’s journey, how he deals with fame, and what it’s like to work on True Blood.
Ryan finds it “electrifying” to play Jason, a guy who acts without thinking. The drastic change from lots of women and a V addiction in Season one to a church camp boy in Season two was quite jarring for Ryan. Once he saw how executive producer Alan Ball and the writers were taking him, he saw that it was the best progression for his character. He believes that Jason has grown up after the experiences he’s had in the past couple of seasons, but he may not necessarily become any wiser. At his core, he’s still Jason–he’ll do and say whatever he feels.
When the role calls for it, Ryan has no qualms about doing nude scenes. He notes that the Australian culture he grew up in was more open-minded than America, but he also appreciates that there was more to those scenes than the sex. It was about Jason looking for something:
“I think that’s the beauty of working for HBO and particularly with Alan Ball, the fact that it’s not just shock for shock value or gore or nudity for the sake of showing skin. It always has a certain subtext or a specific story point that they are going towards. I also think it shows Jason’s vulnerability even though he may be very comfortable with his body and with women and all that, it shows that he’s searching for a sense of belonging.”
When asked about the popularity of True Blood, Ryan talks about how those working on the show knew all along that it was something special, but it was nice when things took off. The number of fans and their passion for the series just kept growing, which is thrilling for him. As many of the actors have expressed, Ryan is surprised by the incredible diversity of their viewership, spanning demographics. It just goes to show that there are so many characters and stories to relate to, everyone can find something they love.
Ryan also offers a nice perspective on his career and where it has led him:
“I’d like to believe that every role sort of led me to where I am and made me a better actor and a better person…Alan said in an interview that he saw the family movie Flicka and thought, ‘Oh, this is sort of like a G-rated Jason!’ So you never know what life is going to hand you and it’s proof that you have to make the best of every opportunity.”
Since True Blood, he says that doors are opening for him more easily, which is nice after years of working so hard to get roles. Part of being an actor is the public recognition, and Ryan, reserved as he is, insists that he doesn’t mind. He takes pride in his work and says he loves the journey of acting, with everything that it includes. These days, he gets lots of attention for True Blood, and people seem shocked to find a very different person than Jason Stackhouse:
“If they don’t know a lot about me, they’re quite surprised that I’m not from Louisiana. I’ve had a couple people insist that I was putting on this accent for another rolled. I said, ‘No, I hate to disappoint you but I’m Australian!’ “
He took the break in filming before Season three to return to his beloved homeland to shoot a couple of movies like Griff the Invisible and Red Hill. Now he’s back in L.A. and developing the character of Jason in what will surely be surprising and fascinating ways!

True Blood Season 3 Spoiler News: Jason and Hoyt’s New Situation
February 9, 2010
True Blood Season 3 spoiler alert regarding the latest about Jason and Hoyt. According to TV Guide Magazine, when Season 3 of True Blood comes back on air in June, Jason won’t be living alone anymore. No, no live in girlfriend yet, but instead a good guy friend. Hoyt will be living on Jason’s couch when we see him again. (Jim Parrack describes the living situation as being very much like The Odd Couple.)
And that’s not all. According to Ryan Kwanten, Jason will be encouraging Hoyt to get over Jessica and try out some new girls. However, don’t expect to see that happening. Even though we’ll see Jason in bed with two women in the first episode of Season 3, and Jason and the girls will invite Hoyt to join them, Hoyt will stick to his guns and stay loyal to his girlfriend, Vampire Jessica.
To add to that, Ryan has admitted to being very excited about Jason’s upcoming love arc which will have Jason falling in love with a very “different” kind of woman.
Sounds like a lot of fun stuff will be headed our way when Season 3 of True Blood starts in June!

True Blood Season 3 Spoiler News: Arlene’s Dilemma
January 28, 2010
More True Blood season 3 spoiler news from Michael Ausiello from EW.com. This time Michael answers two fan questions who are wondering if he can share any more season 3 spoilers. Well it seems that Michael is able to provide us with a few more tidbits this time regarding Arlene and Jason.
“Carrie Preston hints that “something very unexpected is going to happen with her character Arlene… [She] might just be nervous enough about the supernatural characters around her that she will try to do something about it. I think she is going to try to figure out a way to protect herself. She gets very upset. She doesn’t think vampires should be around children.”
“He finally discovers the long lost art of love,” reveals his portrayer, Ryan Kwanten. “Well, at least his version of. It gets him into more trouble that he expected. He’s also dealing with the fact that he committed a small crime in that he killed [Eggs].” What’s been his biggest acting challenge so far this season? “I start the season in bed with two girls,” he says. “Not that I couldn’t do it, but a challenge? Sure.”
It appears that there will be an interesting twist occurring with Arlene. As to what, how and why we will have to wait till June when season 3 returns. In the meantime let’s start speculating in the comment section below.

True Blood Season 3 Spoiler Scoop
January 18, 2010
Here is some some new information about Season 3 of True Blood! Alan Ball has let a little more news spill about what’s coming up in Season 3, and it involves Debbie Pelt, Jason Stackhouse, Sam Merlotte, and Lafayette Reynolds.
As we here at TrueBloodNet.com already reported, Alan is casting for Debbie Pelt, a character he calls “a badass bitch you do not want to get on the wrong side of.” Alan continued by saying, “She is not going to like Sookie.”
When it comes to what’s going to happen with Jason Stackhouse, be prepared for more of his antics, but some changes too. Jason is apparently going to wake up in the season 3 premiere with two women in bed with him, but that won’t dictate the rest of the season. Ryan Kwanten says that he can’t wait to see Jason in a better, more meaningful relationship, commenting, “He will find love in the werewolf world, and love is a pretty unknown concept for him.”
Sam Merlotte has some new storylines coming up too. Sam Trammell teased that Sam will be found in a not-so-great motel room in Arkansas with someone we fans will already know. Sam continued his teasing by saying, “It should be curious and confusing to viewers.”
Lafayette Reynolds‘ mom (and Tara’s aunt), Ruby Jean Reynolds, is coming to Bon Temps too, and will be played by Alfre Woodard. As we’ve reported before, Ruby Jean is NOT a nice woman, though she will be intriguing. Alfre commented on Ruby Jean and said, “She’s not going to be a person that the audience loves. She’s not very accepting of Lafayette, which is fun to play.”
Sounds like a lot of fun new things are going to be happening in True Blood! How excited are you to see what happens next?

Ryan Kwanten Discusses Acting, Family, and Jason Stackhouse
December 22, 2009
Ryan Kwanten plays the super-confident Jason Stackhouse on True Blood, but his personality in real life is not at all like Jason’s, and certainly not like most actors. For someone who admits to being not very good in social situations and uncomfortable with publicity, it seems like Ryan might have chosen the wrong profession, but in a revealing interview with the Sydney Morning Herald from his native country of Australia, the thoughtful and hard-working actor shows why he is exactly where he should be.
Anyone with eyes can see how athletic Ryan is. He has been extremely active his whole life, competing in triathlons and doing yoga and just about every physical activity possible. He considered becoming a professional athlete, or a lawyer. The 33-year old is close to his family, speaking admiringly of his two brothers and his parents. He became an actor almost by accident–Ryan was 15, went along to his brother’s audition, and ended up with a job.
When he first moved to L.A. in 2001 and was looking for work, he rode the bus or a bicycle because he couldn’t afford a car. He went to countless auditions, and tells a funny story about one audition at DreamWorks where he chained his bike in Steven Spielberg’s parking spot.
What Ryan loves about acting is that it gives him a feeling of security, like he can truly be himself, and in doing so allow all his different characters to come from “a place of truth and sincerity.” He describes how he came to feel that way:
“It wasn’t until the roles started having a little more meat to them that I thought, ‘Okay, I could probably hide behind these characters and bring out things. Things that I’ve always wanted to do.’ I guess I began to see acting as this open forum, where there were no limits…A liberation.”
It is probably this mindset that allows him to be so genuine in his portrayal Jason Stackhouse, bringing out humor and innocence in one who could otherwise be a one-dimensional moron. True Blood was a great opportunity for Ryan, and when he found out that he had been cast, he danced around his apartment.
“It was one of those things where every man and his dog were trying to get involved. I mean, a guy with that sort of pedigree [meaning executive producer Alan Ball], and the fact that it’s an HBO thing … People who are 20 years too old or too young are trying to audition.”
It seems that Ryan is just the right man for the job. Alan has praised him many times for his talent and ability as an actor, and it is perhaps because of this that Jason is his favorite character to write for:
“[The way Ryan plays Jason] is perfect. He doesn’t comment on him, he doesn’t judge him, he doesn’t feel the need to let us know he’s not really an emotionally stunted, sexually compulsive jock. He just plays it.”
Ryan may not like to be the center of attention, but he doesn’t seem to mind shedding light on his thoughts about acting in general or True Blood, specifically. He says that he is happy to talk about the show because he is truly proud of the work.
Playing Jason has been an important experience for Ryan and taught him not to analyze things so much. And while Jason often seems like he’s not thinking enough before doing something, Ryan believes there’s more to him than there seems to be:
“I really like Jason. I feel very fortunate to play him. He’s definitely got his flaws, and I know the audience may hate me with a passion after three episodes. They’re like, ‘What the f… is this guy doing? Why does he keep having sex with these women? There’s nothing to him.’ But over the course of the series, I hope they think, ‘Oh, okay, I take that back.’ When you learn more about him, you realize he’s quite a bruised guy who’s had his heart torn out more than once.”
Ryan adds a very important element to the show, and the development of Jason has been one of the most fascinating to watch over the course of two seasons. The success of True Blood has given Ryan a sense of responsibility to bring his work to another level, which fans will be able to see in a couple of movies that he filmed recently, Red Hill and Griff the Invisible, both of which are Australian. Acting is his primary focus at the moment, so that he doesn’t have time to date right now, but he sounds as though he couldn’t be more thrilled with where life is taking him.

True Blood’s Ryan Kwanten is one of Australia’s Top 10 Hunks
December 18, 2009
Ryan Kwanten is gorgeous. A simple fact that a majority of True Blood fans have known since his first appearance in Season 1, Episode 1 of True Blood. And now, thanks to a poll on Fandango.com, it has been revealed to the public that Ryan is one of the top 10 Australian sex symbols. (This poll was done as part of the campaign ‘Hollywood’s Australians in Film’.)
No, Ryan did not take the number one spot (that went to Hugh Jackman), but at least we know how popular Ryan is amongst fans of television and film.
Other men included in the top ten (besides Ryan and Hugh) were Simon Baker (The Mentalist), Chris Hemsworth (Star Trek), Jesse Spencer (House), Sam Worthington (Avatar), and Eric Bana (Star Trek). Unfortunately, the only placement that can be confirmed is first place, but that doesn’t make our Jason Stackhouse any less sexy!
