Is Maryann A Maenad?

michelle_forbes

Greek Mythology defines Maenads as the female followers of Dionysus.  A literal translation of the name means “raving ones” In Wikipedia the Maenads are said to be inspired by Dionysus “into a state of ecstatic frenzy, through a combination of dancing and drunken intoxication. In this state, they would lose all self control, begin shouting excitedly, engage in uncontrolled sexual behavior, and ritualistically hunt down and tear animals (and sometimes men and children) to pieces, devouring the raw flesh. During these rites, the maenads would dress in fawn skins and carry a thyrsus, a long stick wrapped in ivy or vine leaves and tipped by a cluster of leaves, weave ivy-wreaths around their heads, and often handle or wear snakes.”
If you remember the first time we saw Maryann she was in the woods, naked carrying a staff which would be her “thyrsus”. In the previous two episodes of  True Blood we saw Maryann influence the patrons at Merlotte’s into an uncontrolled “frenzy” of dance, also putting a kind of aphrodisiac type spell over the crowd. Now the party at her house  in the third episode made the party at Merlotte’s seem tame.
In the following paragraph from the hermetic fellowship it describes many of Maryann’s personality traits.
“The Maenads are called nurses and foster mothers — they not only nurse and mother the young God (referring to Dionysus), but young animals in the forest as well.
They have the power to make the Earth bloom and the wild animals come to them.”

The same document also lists the power of maenads as such:
· To awaken the God
·    To run with the God
·    To share His attributes
·    To tame wild things by nursing them
·    To call forth water and wine and milk and honey from the Earth
·    To fight and not be harmed
·    To destroy
·    To prophesy

We have seen the nurturing side of  Maryann in her relationship to Tara and Eggs. These are two people who were strays of society to some degree, we learned Eggs was homeless and Tara never had a mother who was emotionally there for her needs, she was left her entire life to fend for herself then re-abandoned when her mother saw herself as “saved”.  We also saw Maryann‘s interaction (which more seemed like communication) with the pig at her house. Briefly we saw a picture at her pool which showed Pan with his human lover, maenads were known to be lovers of Pan and the Satyr which is described as a half man half goat creature.

The Question is why would she attack Sookie? Also why would she have killed Ms. Jeanette? The two things these women have in common is Tara. As for Ms. Jeanette I feel  Maryann believes she was avenging Tara , in her confrontation with Tara’s mother she may have not physically ripped Tara’s mother’s heart out but her words were meant to.  I am sure their is a whole other reason for her attack on Sookie we will have to watch more to find out(I love and HATE  that everything in this show is a cliffhanger.)

And watch out Tara this women may be nurturing when you are on her good side, the other side well  NOT so good.

Miss Jeanette was killed specifically for her heart (which is missing from her body when they find her) and if you look in the episode when Maryanne has her party, they are serving up a broth which has been boiled up with the heart. In the myths of Dionysos Zagreus (the ‘first incarnation’ of Dionysos) Dionysos is murdered by the Titans, but his heart is saved by Zeus who feeds it to Semele (who will give birth to Dionysos reincarnated). The Titans eat the rest of his body. This idea of the ‘soul’ or ‘lifeforce’ of Dionysos being eaten by either his followers or other gods is reflected in Trueblood. Maenads were said to re-create these myths by eating raw flesh/blood – ties in nicely, dont ya think!

In the second book it is quite clear that she maenad.

She is definitely a maenad, the symbol for Dionysus was the bull, which can attribute to her shape of the minotaur, her motherly instincts are also inline with the mythology, as they were nymphs who were devoted to the god after he was given to them by his aunt. Also the emphasis on dancing, ecstasy and gluttony are consistent as well.

In the Sookie Stackhouse novels the second bood entitled Living Dead In Dallas has Sookie meeting up with Maryanne in the woods after Bills car breaks down & they have a little tiff. Sookie gets angry & leaves Bills car & takes off down the road. There she meets Maryanne for the first time. Maryanne is standing with a wand & a pig by her side. She is dirty & dressed scantily with tangled hair & bare feet. She asked Sookie if she was Bills pet. Sookie asked her what she was & she told her a maenad. Before she attacked Sookie she told her this is for Eric Northman. After arriving at Erics for help & Sookie eventually comes to they fiqured out Maryanne is looking for a “tribute” by the vamps since her god Bacchus is no longer honered. If they do not pay tribute to her she will “send her madness their way”.

It is the best adult television on tv. I have read the books also and I love the fact that the show is different. I prefer the show. I like to be surprised. Even Alex Scarsgard said the show should be different to keep the fans guessing. Enjoy!

OMG>>>TRUW BLOOD is awesome.I am reading the books that this show is based on and its great. the show is dead on. I wish i could be a part of this show. Some of the things are off but i guess it is to keep us at the edge of our seats. I used to dread sunday especially sunday nights but not anymore. a bottle of O posiive please…lol

In the second book Southern Vampire – Living Dead In Dallas, the Maenad attacks Sookie to send a message to Eric. Apparently, she is looking for a tribute from the vampires. Like a Bear or Man or something like that. All of this is in Chapter 2 and 3 of the book. The True Blood series has seriously deviated from the books, though.

Minotaur
In Greek mythology, the Minotaur was part man and part bull. It was kept by King Minos of Crete in the center of a “labyrinth,” an elaborate maze-like construction designed by the architect Daedalus specifically to hold the Minotaur. According to legend, the Minotaur required human sacrifices on a regular basis. Theseus volunteered to be sacrificed, and with the help of Daedalus, was able to slay the Minotaur and escape the maze.

Minotaur’s father was a bull and his mother human. So he is half and half
The Queen of Crete fell in love with a white bull. Strange, but it was Poseidon’s doing. Daedalus, the inventor, made a fake cow for her to get into, and the white bull mated with this thing. So Queen Pasiphaë got pregnant and bore the Minotaur.

I had been searching about maryann… thanks 4 the information,
and I think they kept lafayette alive cause he is a very talented actor

Abby

I just started reading the second book and in it Lafayette dies in the first chapter…I wonder why they decided to let him live in the second season…I don’t mind because I think he is an amazing actor…but I can’t wait to see what they have in store for him.

patty

Not that Alan Ball is following the novels too closely, but in the book she is indeed a Maenad. It is interesting how minor characters from the book- such as Tara & Jason-have become such lead characters in the show..

TB lover

Michelle Forbes – confirmed it today, she is a Maenad – http://www.tvguide.com/News/True-Blood-Forbes-1007953.aspx

Alicia

Maenads also cavorted with beasts and pigs…

Ratravarman

Specifically, the Minotaur is not a man’s body with the head of a bull. It had many attributes. It had the horns of a bull but the rest of it’s head was like a pit bull dog or mastiff and instead of hands or hooves, it had raptor’s talons (as did the Gorgons), a feature which is accurately represented in the show. Its humanoid body was androgynous in appearance although heavily muscled to indicate its great strength. The Minotaur was also very carnivorous, virgins youth and maidens being sacrificed to it annually by being sealed in the labyrinth to await their doom, Theseus being the first and only to escape this blood rite.

Don”t you just love True Blood. They have taken “creatures” and put them in your face and then everyone is trying to figure it out. Everyone is talking about what Maryanne is. It’s amazing. Its so much fun trying to figure it out. I almost don’t want to know its just fun playing the guessing game with her.But on the other hand, I really do want to know.I know i can’t have it both ways, but you have to admit it really is fun trying to figure her out.

andrea

Thanks for more information Chris and Brad,I also learned another interesting tidbit(courtesy of wiki)Minotaurs had feminine features although they were male. In an earlier comment to my own article I had mentioned the minotaur had womanly hips and a feminine physique so I presumed the creature to me a female.I love when people who have studied Greek Mythology)or mythology in general chime in.If anyone has studied or finds out more please add in!
thanks Andrea!

Chris

She transformed Ulysses’ crew into pigs… ring a bell? Maybe the writers of True Blood took another “free turn” towards Circe instead of a Maenad….

Brad

“She was sister of two kings of Colchis, Æëtes and Perses, and of Pasiphaë, mother of the Minotaur. Circe transformed her enemies, or those who offended her, into animals through the use of magical potions.” Another interesting tidbit about Circe that I got from Wikipedia!!!

Brad

I never thought about the Maenads possibility with Maryann and it does make a lot of sense. I’ve always had an interest in Greek mythology but never read much about them. The first thought I had about Maryann and who she really is, was the goddess/witch Circe. She was the seductress from the Iliad I think who transformed Odysisses men into swine and had many other magical powers. It will be very interesting to find out what she really is!!!

Lisa

I don’t think the creature is Eggs. He would have been at the party during the attack. It was still light out when he was playing the guitar for everyone and then he spent the rest of the time with Tara. It has to be Maryann. I’m really stumped with Daphnie though.
The books are awesome everyone must read!

andrea

If I had to guess which character is the Minotaur mine would be Maryanne’s servant,Carl.Whether it matters or not the hips and body of the Minotaur were feminine.Carl is subservient(to say the least)to,Maryanne and does her bidding and like other ancient slaves in Rome and Greece they were “full service.”

Tanya

A minotaur! What a good observation! That would pre-date Eric’s 1,000 years and be the reason why they’d never seen one. Daphne was acting really strange though at the end…

smashlee

Maryann is definitely the maenad from the books. In the books, she had sexual a history with sam, just like she does in the show (though sam really hates her in the show). she obviously wants tribute from someone. most likely eric or sam just like in the books. shes surrounded by alcohol just like maenads are supposed to be.

Daphne couldnt have been attacked by the maenad because she would have died. maybe the scratches are from something else? maybe she herself is a different creature?

Lisette

I also think the creature might be Eggs. He might have been sent by Maryanne to attack Sookie. Do you guys remember when Maryanne slapped her servant guy because he interrupted Tara and Eggs as they were about to kiss? She and possibly him too, don’t want Tara to leave.

Lisette

Wow, Hoyt is in the books? I don’t even remember. Oops then. Like I said before, I have an awful memory which really sucks because I love reading but tend to forget why I love certain books so much. Oh well.

rclaurel

well Tara moves in next episode, so I guess Maryann didn’t count on Sookie having a Vampire for a boyfriend or that she would get medical treatment from the Dr.

Ava Gacser

That’s an excellent point, Chris. It wouldn’t make sense if Daphne was the creature because she obviously was attacked just like Sookie. It could very well be that Eggs is the culprit here. Plus, it’s not like they’re just going to fix Tara up with a nice guy with no skeletons (or claws) in his closet.

Since the creature’s appearance is a departure from the book, there’s no telling what/who it is exactly that attacked Sookie. But I think Eggs is a good guess.

AngieBatgirl

She just wanted to send a message that she expects tribute to be paid. They wind up giving her a live bull. And Sam actually romps around the forest with her until she leaves

Chris

If you listen closely when Sookie “listens in” on Maryann’s thoughts you can hear the latin name of Dionysus, “Bacchus” repeated over and over. Also, Maryann’s hairdos and formal dresses refer to Ancient Greece.
The creature that attacked Sookie was a Minotaur (half-man and half-bull) and probably a servant of Maryann. My guess is it might be Eggs. Daphne sure came in contact with the Minotaur, but maybe only during one of Maryann’s orgies, and she got scratched. Obviously she survived (with the help of Maryann???…) but the scratches remained because she didn’t have vampire blood available to recuperate…

Nia

I am loving the speculation rearding the show. That is why it is so good to have the show be different from the books. It makes us wonder and we are surprised. I love it.
As to Maryanne, I believe she is a Maenad. She has supernatural powers, more so than a Vampire or shapeshifter (which makes her a force to be reckoned with). She loves the god Dionysos (hence the mural on her wall), who is the god of mischeif, mayhem, drink, sex, etc..
Maryanne either is the horned creature who attacked Sookie (a form she can take) or she controls the horned creature. Perhaps the horned creature is the pig who can transform into the horned creature.
I do not believe it is coincidence that Sookie gets attacked the same night that she asked Tara to move in. I am sure everyone noticed the look on Maryannes face.
As to what role Daphne has in all this, I believe that she was innocent until Maryanne got some of her magic potion into her (the orgy), now she could be controlled by Maryanne. I think Maryanne will use her to get back at Sam. But I am not sure how the scratches got on her back. Did Maryanne poison her to do her bidding? The scratches are so lethal, who cured her? too many questions.
It is so much fun to speculate on the events so far and try to predict what will happen next!

Jocelyn

i didn’t read the books because the libraries in my area has had them all lent out for a months at least. why does maryanne want to send a message to eric, what connection do they have.

Tanya

As a student of Greek mythology with a particular interest in Dionysos, you did get the background info of the Maenads correct. I could tell Maryanne was one from the beginning but I’m pretty positive that she is not the creature that attacked Sookie. The new waitress, Daphne, most assuredly is due to the last scene in episode 3 where she suddenly appears and catches Sam. There is really something creepy about her in that scene and with the scratches on her back, it’s obvious and also with the preview for the next episode is kinda hints that she is more than human and therefore is most likely the culprit. However, Daphne is a Greek name and there is a high possibility that she was sent there by Maryanne. I’m not certain what kind of creature she is and I haven’t read the books yet, but hopefully we will find out soon enough!

Josh

I’m more interested in theories about Daphne or if there’s any link between Maryanne and the demon Tara believed was in her for a time. Seeing as it’s spelled out in the book that Maryanne is a Manead this comes off more as a spoiler than speculation.

AngieBatgirl

Lisette – I don’t know which sweet guy you mean but if you’re talking about the guy that Jessica was with, then that’s Hoyt and he’s def in the books.

In the book, Sookie was scratched to send a message to Eric. And he used that to get her to go to Dallas. I wonder how they’re going to change the Dallas trip cuz Jessica isn’t in the books and Godric isn’t the Sheriff…Stan is.

Rebecca

Just wondering what elsa is waiting in the shadows? I think Daphne is either the creature or connected somehow.Maryanne, makes me think that there is alot more going on than what has been there sofar. At Sam’s when sookie first met her, What words was she saying in her head for sookie to pick up on.Was it Greek or Roman. It was old and a little odd.

Lisette

I honestly don’t think it’s Maryanne. She wasn’t in the books so she’s going to be something that’s not in the books. At least that’s what I think. I think that because like for example that redheaded vamp and that sweet guy who aren’t on the books(I’m awful with names sorry)they are going to interact with each other but not that much with other characters from the books because, well, because they’re not in the books. I hope that makes sense. I just think the characters added to the show are all going to have more to do with each other than with the book characters.
But then again, in the books the maenad is what causes Sookie and Bill to argue more in the first place, so it could be Maryanne. I don’t know I still don’t really think it’s her because it’s just TOO obvious. Usually the big bad tends to be someone that’s not obvious.
😀

Danielle

yes,I do believe that Maryann is the Maynad, but think about about this what attacked Sookie was a bull like half man creature. Maryann could have summoned the creature and that might have been what attacked Sookie it could have also attacked Daphne but more then likely Daphne is that creature since I’m not sure if it can turn others into one like it or just kill who knows if it can change form. I don’t know I’m thinking that what attacked sookie has to do with Daphne also if you looked at the close up of her skin at the end of Scratches you’ll see why.

AlexsLover

YOU KNOW I’VE BEEN THINKING ABOUT IT,IT ALL MAKES SENSE TO ME, SHE IS DEFENATALY THE MAENAD….

Tina

I think Maryann had Sookie attacked because Sookie wanted Tara to move in with her. Remember the cautious, “Ohhhhhhh she wants you to move in with her? That’s nice…”

ASHLEY

Andrea, Yeah Im not saying your article was bad/wrong… it was actually really good…but id just throw that fact out there for the people who forgot/haven’t read the book! 🙂

Oh and BTW people…if you HAVEN’T read the books…DO SO NOW!!! They are AMAZING!!!! <3

portinari

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Sookie was attacked the same night that she asked Tara to move in with her. And thanks for sharing the research!

KimmyM

This is a great explanation that makes more sense than wikipedia did to me. Thanks!

Gneila Shallott

I had a feeling the new creature was Maryanne. 1) we haven’t known what she really is – yet. … 2) the look on her face when Tara Announced that Sookie asked her to come live with her.

I think she attacked Sookie to force Bill to ‘turn’ her in order to save her — thereby taking her away from Tara forever.

I’ve not read the books — I’m coming real close though, to buying them….

andrea

Yes Ashley you are right it does say that in the second book:) there initially(in the show) was questions as to what type of creature Maryanne would be. I have read all the books but also enjoy the show and feel good that the books are not an exact script. This way I can be on the edge of my seat as to what twists the story will take. I also felt the mythology of Maenods is really interesting and wanted to share it with other fans.

ChelseaStarr

That is amazingly observant!! And on the spot accurate! Gee, I would have never made that connection!!

ASHLEY

Sorry I left out part of that sentence. Woops, I meant to say……
‘Ok, so you wonder why Maryanne attacks Sookie’ ….

Jyve

Wow, that does seem to fit Maryann to a tee.

ASHLEY

Ok, so you say that you don’t know why Maryanne (Calipso in the book) but if you read the 2nd book, it will tell you right there that it was to send a message to Eric! I really hope they start following the book a bit more in the upcomming episodes!
<3 TRUEBLOOD!
