Stephen Moyer on Vampires and Love Scenes

November 3, 2009 by

Stephen MoyerStephen Moyer, True Blood’s darkly handsome Bill Compton, shows off his lighter, humorous personality in real life. In Now Magazine’s “Cheeky Questions” feature, he answered several questions about getting naked for work.

In general, Stephen sees nudity as a regular part of acting because it’s a regular part of life:

“When you’re a young actor starting out, usually the young character is the love interest. I’ve done that for 15 years and it’s always like: how long before I get my kit off? It’s a novelty when I get to keep my clothes on! But we all make love, we all kiss, we all have sexual relationships with people and it’s funny to me that people are surprised that those things feature in dramas because it would be strange to me if they didn’t.”

The specific scene that had fans talking was the graveyard scene in Season one’s “The Fourth Man in the Fire.” Stephen laughs about the reality behind that scene, which had him emerging from the ground covered in dirt:

“That was me in the earth–it wasn’t a butt double! I hadn’t really thought about it, to be honest–I was too busy lifting weights in the gym! But you get earth in bits you wouldn’t want it to get into!”

Fans were also curious about what made him fall in love with Anna, and as always Stephen responded with great praise for his fiancee:

“She’s sharp, she’s funny, she’s brilliant, she’s incredibly talented and she’s an ultimate professional. She’s probably the most straight-talking woman I’ve ever met and she’s caring, generous, and kind. And I think she’s beautiful.”

For their intimate scenes together, they are obviously very comfortable with each other. This gives them the freedom to add some variety to how they film those moments between Sookie and Bill. Above all, they want it to be natural:

“I would love to think that, as a professional, if I have to have a love scene with somebody else it would be just as good! There’s a scene in Season two in which Sookie and Bill consume each other in bed. We’d done naked blood sex and romantic sex so we thought: ‘How could we make this look different?’ “

It is certainly no surprise that Stephen would be thrilled about his job! He gushed over how working on True Blood is a dream. The characters are deeply layered, even the vampires. It’s not just a one-dimensional supernatural show. They are able to balance many tones. Comedy, romance, drama, violence, social meaning–True Blood has everything.

Stephen joked that if he could bite someone’s neck, it would be musician Tom Waits:

“If I could get a little bit of his blood it could do something crazy to me…he’s my all-time hero.”

This interview is just another example of what a fun guy Stephen is, and how much he enjoys being part of True Blood and talking about it with the fans who sometimes send him strange items in the mail.

“I get everything from knickers to plasters for covering neck bites.  I was recently send a photo of a naked German lady lying down next to her white horse?”

  • Geez, Antonio…Your comments, on Nov.4!!! Got me laughing here!! I was and am usually just B.S.ing….Now the part about, “He’s a Vampire,unclean..a monster! He need’s to be destroyed!” That’s probably why I like him?? The unclean Vampire part!!?? Oh, Yeah and “Look at Bill, he’s 173” and he got someone??!! OMG!! There is hope!! Ha-Ha… Those silly misfit’s…And that Sam..What a dog!!! I’m just havin some fun…Like we all are…Love that Stephen..(Not literally..) Thank’s for the laughs..love it!!

  • Yes, It would be nice to have someone like him in my life…A-A-g-h….Oh, back to reality..”Why don’t I??!” Because, I’m an almost 57 yr. old grandma, who lives in Madras, Or.!!!! But, I know!!?? If we ever met..Bells would ring, rockets would go off!! Birds would sing!! The earth would move!!? Yeah, Right!! Duh…like that would ever happen!! I think I kinda know when to draw the line….This is just my fantasy island, deal…Plus, I just like to ramble on and on… Love his interviews…cool guy!! Go Vampire Bill!!

There is nothing wrong in being 57 and a grandma! It is what is inside that matters, and in this instance, we are all young at heart and it does not matter how old or young one is, romance lives inside all of us! So what if it is fantasy – it keeps us going!!

      • Nia

        Hi Lizzie!!!
Spoken like a true lover of all things Bill/Stephen! And what a fantasy he has given us.
Young or old, he has glamoured us all, so Lani do not feel bad in the least because we share the same feelings you do!

I think part of what the show is about is that it encourages people to be creative and imaginative in their Own lives!
It encourages people to dream and to try and be more tolerant, accepting forgiving perhaps? Look at it this way,
Vampire Bill goes into Merlotte’s bar..He is just perhaps looking for some Tru Blood to drink….Many in the bar are looking at him strangely because they know he is “different”.
Even though Sookie should be “reviled” and “disgusted” by him
She is excited to meet him! Something about Him draws her attention and her enthusiasm and I think He felt the same way about Her as well! Alan Ball is trying to say here that Even “misfits” can find a place in this world! Even They can fall in love and seek to have a better life for themselves!
Many would probably say “He’s a Vampire Unclean A Monster He needs to be Destroyed!” I think that was Jason’s attitude if Not Andy and Terry’s Even Sam made a comment in S1 remember? Something about Buffy or Blade coming to Marthaville to Stake some Vampire…I knew Who he meant I didnt like that too much “I Don’t Like That kind of talk,Mr. Merlotte!”
What did He do to You,Personally?
Anyway can you see My point here?
Sookie and Bill and maybe to some degree Sam learn to become More accepting less judgemental more tolerant open minded
Vampire Bill and I suppose the other Vamps then become a Metaphor for the “Marginalized” or “Unwanted” in Society!
What I dont understand about Sam at least in the beginning, is Why he seems So against Bill…Why? Because Bill is a Vampire?
Why would He be against Bill for That? He’s a Shapeshifter for Pete’s Sake! He’s Also one of the “Outsiders” Shouldnt they All stick together??
It doesnt Matter a person’s age Look at Bill 174 years old
and Still goin strong right?? Well maybe Not Technically!!
TB is a show which seems to transcend Politics,Age,Gender
What I have learned from this show is that Everyone deserves a chance! Even the “Different”!
Sookie just doesnt tolerate Bill She Loves Him!!
They compliment each other because She is “strange” too!
There are NO Perfect people in Bon Temps!!
      Nor are there Anywhere!!

        That was nice, Antonio!

I totally agree with comments above! I want a Stephen Moyer! To have one would make me ecstatically happy for life!

  • Well, I already adore Steve, so this didn’t do much for me but refresh my memory as to what makes Steve an awesome guy! To be frank, he sounds like he’d get along great with my family and friends! I only wish it were so (and I bet I’m not the only one!)

    • Nia

So true Isis! Stephen is wonderful and I am always happy to see him interviewed for he never fails to entertain and charm. I’v already been glamoured but I can never have enough!
Thanks Janie for the wonderful article!

    • LOL! Isis that is so true. Stephen seems to be a genuine nice guy that it seems he would be comfortable with anyone and in turn he would make anyone feel comfortable with him. 🙂

    • Nia

AHHHHH, basking in the warmth and good company here!

    • Judy

I couldn;t agree more. Wish I had someone like this around. heartstopping attractive in everyway.

That Would Be Nice Wouldn’t it? I guess part of the fantasy of these shows is that they take us away to meet new people, places, worlds, times. It’s easy for Me for example to “lose myself” In Forks. Because its a facile little “universe” to escape into. Of Course,Forks being the Home of Bella Swan and The Cullens of Twilight fame.
We can admire these people Yes but we must Not give them the responsibility of being Role Models for Us. Some1 once said even the best actors/rock stars/athletes Secretly “dream” of being Something Else!! There Is a line however to be drawn.
Between Wouldnt it be nice to have Someone like Him/Her in My Life? AND Why Dont I Have Someone LIKE Him/Her in My Life?
