Find Out How True Blood is Helping College Students Transition

American Beauty to True Blood: Drama of Alan Ball Now on Offer at Monmouth University:

Bill-and-Sookie-200x300Have you ever wished that you could study True Blood at university? Well, now you can! Monmouth University has a new freshman seminar course on offer. It is entitled American Beauty to True Blood: Drama of Alan Ball and is being taught by Sheri Anderson (who also wrote a trivia book about True Blood).

This course is designed to help students transition from high school students to university students. While researching True Blood, Sheri Anderson realized just how much the values and lessons hidden within the vampire TV series could help students with one of the biggest upheavals in their young lives:

Many of them are living away from home for the first time, they are trying to figure out who they are as individuals and they are trying to adjust to new social surroundings and everything that transition includes … The reasons I thought this was appropriate for college students is that right now they are at a major turning point in their lives, where they are the new people and they are the ones trying to fit it. So seeing vampires trying to fit into society is funny, it’s dark and it’s interesting, but’s it’s also very human … ‘True Blood’ was able to tackle the very grown up issues dealing with fitting in to the main stream and stepping ‘out of the coffin. Depending through which lens you are viewing it, that could be a civil rights metaphor, it could be a gay rights metaphor or it could just be someone who is on the outside just trying to fit in.

During the this freshman seminar course, students are able to view three episodes of HBO’s True Blood and then are instructed to find journal articles and secondary source materials that relate to what they have learnt.

Surprisingly, this is not the first time Professor Anderson has taught True Blood related courses at Monmouth.

TV Line had this exclusive to share in regards to True Blood’s very last episode ever:

The table read for the series finale took place earlier this week, and there wasn’t a dry eye in the house, Stephen Moyer confirms. “People turned up that we hadn’t seen for ages — [series creator] Alan [Ball] was there,” he tells TVLine. “We’re sitting in the same room we’ve been reading in for seven years… that stuff’s really deep.”

So, already, the tears are flowing… from me, and I don’t even know what goes down in the Season 7 finale!

With the loss of a loved character in the very first episode of True Blood already confirmed, will we see even more deaths by the very end of True Blood? Just how many of our faves will die and/or meet the true death before the show is laid to rest?

Alan Ball talks about HBO's True Blood Season 6Alan Ball, the former show runner of HBO’s True Blood, attended the season 6 premier party. Here’s what he thought about the premier:

“I loved it. I thought it was the perfect mix of scares, action and humor. It really makes me want to see what happens next.”

Ball spoke about the show burning him and enjoying his break from working. So what exactly is he up to? Is he planning any upcoming projects?

“I have a series idea that I’m working on and writing on spec and have two screenplays I’m trying to put together. And I’m working on another one, and then I have another one that’s halfway finished. [The show] is unlike either Six Feet Under or True Blood; it’s very different. I’d definitely say it’s a drama, but it’s too early to talk about.”

It’s impossible to fill Alan Ball’s shoes …  really, this plane is in the air, and I just want to land it safely.

Could HBO True Blood’s sixth season be it’s last?

True Blood coming to an end:

The cast of HBO's True Blood

Since Alan Ball, creator of HBO’s True Blood, has left the show, rumors have been running amok that the upcoming season of True Blood could be it’s final.

It’s no secret that shows can’t last without their foundation. Another potential piece of evidence? The’s show will be putting forth 10 episodes instead of it’s usual 12. However, Alan Ball was quoted as saying that it was due to the economy and to help accommodate Anna Paquin’s (Sookie Stackhouse) pregnancy.

True Blood: Vampire Politics and Contribution to the Vampire Myth

The Fearless HBO Drama Adds to the Vampire Phenomena:

Chris_Meloni_As_Guardian_RomanTrue Blood has touched almost every taboo topic from sex to voodoo. It’s no wonder they chose politics and religion for the premise of season five!

The complex vampire politics that dominated this most recent season were brought to life through the new character of Roman Zimojic played by Christopher Meloni. This terrifying Authority leader fiercely believed in a moral coexistence between the vampires and humans and carried out his belief through the vampire movement of “mainstreaming.”

The political aspect of the show seemed to come at an appropriate time for creator Alan Ball. He said:

“Some of the things being said by some people during the Republican primary were so horrifying to me that I thought, ‘What if vampires wanted a theocracy? What would that look like?’ Whenever anybody thinks they know what God wants and wants to apply that to government, whether Americans or the Taliban, it’s kind of a terrifying thing.”

Although religion had been touched on  in past seasons, such as Steve Newlin’s (Michael McMillian) ardent Fellowship of the Sun religious group and Jesus’s (Kevin Alejandro) family voodoo, the vampire queen Lilith and her effects on the vampires of the show bring the fifth season to a whole new level.

True Blood continues to add to the vampire myth with its concept of vampires in a group as a race living among humans. Early myths portray vampires as simply humans under an evil possession, according to Mark Jenkins in his book Vampire Forensics. In Bram Stoker’s Dracula, the vampire is demonic, he abuses humans, and is quite sexual, preying on women. The myths seem to change and develop as they are passed down to other people and cultures.

In True Blood, however, as vampires suddenly “come out of the coffin” and live among humans in modern day society, they have broken the established order. Although the vampires of the show are not demonic as they have been portrayed to be in other vampire stories, they represent a mistreated, misunderstood race, especially when compared to other species (shape-shifters, fairies, and even humans) who have also shown how they cruel they can be.

As great as a concept as it is, the provocative HBO drama was not the first to introduce a vampire society. It’s also seen in Anne Rice’s Interview with a Vampire. In her Vampire Chronicles, readers drew parallels between the vampires and the gay community of real life. Rice retorted that her book was “bigger than any gay allegory, and so is any gay allegory,” going on to explain:

“Gender influences everything but determines nothing! Vampires transcend gender. We as a modern people transcend gender, though we can never escape it. Ours is a time for which there are no precedents with regard to gender and freedom. Look in vain to ancient Rome. Look in vain to the Middle Ages. There has never been so much affluence, scientific knowledge and so much common awareness of violence and injustice. There has never been so much real wealth for so many, combined with instantaneous media confrontation of poverty and suffering. Some of us see life as a horror story, but a horror story with great, great meaning.”

True Blood also draws similar parallels to real society roles, politics, and religion throughout all five of its seasons, sometimes conjuring up more mischief than the characters can manage! With all of this behind them, can’t wait to see what the upcoming sixth season will bring to them!

True Blood’s Big Season 5 Finale And Upcoming Season 6 Hints! – Video:

HBO’s True Blood Creator Alan Ball and Director Michael Lehmann Discuss the Epic Episode and Season 6

Eric & Sookie S5

After seeing the thrilling, question-raising, True Blood Season 5 finale, I knew I wasn’t the only one to be sad when Russell Edgington (Denis O’Hare) met his unfortunate end at Eric Northman‘s (Alex Skarsgård) hands! True Blood creator Alan Ball gushes that writing the scene was “emotional” for himself as well:

“I get really upset when I write scenes where characters that I love die.”

Going on to express how hard it was to write, complimenting the spectacular portrayal by actor Denis O’Hare,  he also adds,

“…but it is True Blood, and he’s done some pretty heinous things.”

Ball knew Eric would have to be the one to do it since Russell had “destroyed Eric’s life” by originally killing his human family. He says:

“It’s blood vengeance. It’s primal, it’s mythic, and all of those things that can do well on a show like True Blood.”

Director Michael Lehmann also notes:

“It’s really fun and interesting that Sookie’s fear is what draws Eric there. That’s kind of a great moment, and that Eric comes in and completely surprises Russell in his moment of glory.”

With Season 6 in the future, Ball hints that questions raised in Season 5 will be addressed, including more information about Warlow and how Jason will deal with it.

As for the big final moment with Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer) and the blood in the Season 5 finale, Ball explains it as:

“a gigantic challenge for Sookie, because for all intents and purposes, she sees him die and then be reborn as something alien and terrifying.”

Lehmann points out that “it’s pretty clear where Eric is emotionally and where he stands.” However, he wonders most about Bill, since “he went so dark at the end of this episode.

Stay tuned for True Blood Season 6 to find out!

Denis O’Hare’s Run as Russell Edgington on True Blood Was Fun While It Lasted

It’s for the Best That Russell Met the True Death:

Russell_Edgington_VultureDenis O’Hare played 3,000 year old vampire Russell Edgington onscreen for only two seasons, but his presence definitely colored a third. Mr. O’Hare says that he had a great time working on HBO’s True Blood, but there was no question that it was Russell’s time to die. The love story between Russell and Steve Newlin (Michael McMillian) made working on Season 5 a pleasure, and Mr. O’Hare can’t rule out a Godric-esque flashback for his character, but he maintains that true death at the hands of Eric Northman (Alex Skarsgård) was right.

Mr. O’Hare says that he didn’t know definitively for some time that Russell was going to meet the true death. There was much discussion and controversy as to how it should happen. There was never any question that Russell would die at the hands of Eric, the only question was the circumstances. In the end, making him drunk on fairy blood and leaving him vulnerable to a sneak attack from Eric was the most plausible, given Russell’s greater age and power. While some have speculated as to why Russell wasn’t more strategic about the time of day he drank the fairy blood, Mr. O’Hare replied:

“There’s no fairy blood handbook. No one has any schematics on how much fairy blood you should take to be in the sun, how long you can survive in the sun on it. Is it good for a year? A day? And Russell is more instinctual versus strategic. I’m not sure he has a plan, so he’s not thinking, I should wait until 7:30.”

The final moment of Russell’s life pleased Mr. O’Hare. He enjoyed the disappointed but accepting reaction. Mr. O’Hare believes that Russell has lost the enjoyment of living and the pursuit of power simply is no longer enough. His attachment to Steve Newlin was pleasant, but simply not enough. Mr. O’Hare says that one of the most enjoyable things about Season 5 was working with Michael McMillian. They worked well enough together to be able to improv and adlib scenes and dialog. While much of it was edited out, there were still many things that made it to the screen.

Mr. O’Hare Talks of the True Blood Cast and Speculates on the Future

Of the many things Mr. O’Hare says that he will miss about working on True Blood, he names the cast as what he will miss the most. Not only did all the actors work well together, but they were friends as well, often hanging out together onset. One member of the primary cast (who Mr. O’Hare will not name), continued to advocate to keep Russell Edgington alive. Alan Ball and the head writers sadly could not agree and said:

“For credibility’s sake, he has to go. We can’t let him survive again.”

Mr. O’Hare was asked to speculate on the future of True Blood storylines, and Russell’s possible place in them. He says that Bill Compton’s story is so divergent from the books there is no way to guess which direction it will go from here. While Mr. O’Hare has written a complete backstory for Russell, and provided it to the show writers, he has no idea if any of it will ever be incorporated into the show. For that reason, he’s not sure if Russell’s maker will ever become known, or if he has any progeny who might provide opportunities for flashbacks or visitations. Mr. O’Hare says that it’s possible that Eric is the closest Russell has ever gotten to feeling as though he had a true son:

“There was a lovely scene in season three where Russell and Eric had an intense moment, where Eric accepts his authority, and kneels before him, and you discover how Russell never had a son and he adopts Eric. That scene was cut, but there is an echo of that when Eric kneeled before him again this season. And for Eric to take Russell’s life, it was appropriate, and Russell knew that and he welcomed it. This was the only person he’s ever accepted as a son.”

True Blood’s Alcide and Sookie Possible Hook-up Dead and Buried?

Remember when Alcide and Sookie Started Going at It in the Beginning of Season 5?

Sookie and AlcideYep and so do we! So what happened?

Alan Ball, creator of True Blood, said:

“The decision to not do it this season [came about because] every single season, it’s been all about Sookie falling in love with this person or that person. It seemed like she had enough on her plate this season to not just [say], ‘Okay, now Sookie’s gonna fall in love with Alcide!’”

Ball reassures that even though Sookie has put Alcide through the ringer, i.e. covering up his ex-girlfriend’s murder for her, puking on him, subjecting him to vamps who he despises, etc, that the door is not closed. Or not locked.

What do you Truebies think? Are you Team Eric? Team Bill? Team Alcide?

True Blood to be Reduced to 10 Episodes for Season 6!

Trubies, What Do You Think of HBO’s Decision?

Hey Trubies; I for one am not happy, with True Blood only being 10 episodes for next season. Wetpaint.com has posted an article about True Blood being reduced next season. Wetpaint references a TVguide article that you can read here. In the article Alan Ball says:

“[We are] moving production to January to accommodate [Anna’s pregnancy],” but there will also “only be 10 shows next season, partly because of Anna and partly because of the economics.”

About the show in Season 6, he also states:

“There will also be some other characters maybe who we know and love who are pursuing a less than generous agenda,” Alan spilled, also noting that Jason “might be” a danger to all of Bon Temps’ vampires!”

He also had news about Sookie and Alcide possibly rekindling their very brief romance in the next season.

What do you think about Season 6 being only 10 episodes long trubies? Let us know what you think by commenting in comment section below.

Kristin Bauer van Straten And Joe Manangiello Discuss The True Blood Season 5 Finale

The Actors Sat Down at San Diego ComicCon to Discuss HBO’s Vampire Drama:

truebloodpam_hollywood_reporterJust before the ComicCon panel for HBO’s True Blood, Joe Manangiello and Kristin Bauer van Straten sat down together to discuss their characters in the series’ Season 5. Mr. Manangiello plays hunky werewolf Alcide Herveaux and Ms. Bauer van Straten portrays snarky vampire Pamela de Beaufort.

Both actors look forward to and enjoy the fan interaction of their ComicCon appearances. They agreed that the True Blood panel was as close to being a Beatle as either of them will ever get. Ratings numbers and internet chatter does not provide the same pleasure as seeing the enthusiastic faces of fans.

Mr. Manangiello readily revealed that Alcide will be having a great deal of sex during Season 5.

“I really feel like I’m having the full True Blood experience. I get to have sex with a bunch of people. I get around sexually, I kill people. It’s pretty rad.”

Both actors agreed that True Blood is very much about relationships in Season 5, both the sexual and the emotional. Ms. Bauer Van Straten, however, is disappointed that her character has yet to kill anyone on screen. She says she watches Alex (Skarsgård) ripping bodies apart and wishes she got to do that.

Ms. Bauer van Straten’s character Pam, has become a maker in Season 5, having turned Tara (Rutina Wesley) in order to save her life. At the same time, Pam has been released by her own maker, Eric Northman (Alexander Skarsgård).

“Everything really is at stake for Pam. It expanded this year for me. Pam became totally 3D.”

Kristin and Joe Discuss Sex with Werewolves and the True Blood Season 5 Finale

Mr. Manangiello revealed that there is a rougher version of Alcide’s drunken make-out session with Sookie (Anna Paquin) than the one that finally aired. That footage, however, is on the cutting room floor. He also told about conversations he had with showrunner Alan Ball, before the filming of Season 5 regarding what sex with a werewolf would be like.

“We both agreed that the girl wakes up in the morning and does that ‘Oh’ thing, and then does the cowgirl walk the whole day.”

Ms. Bauer van Straten confessed to being a geek herself over the television show Battlestar Galactica. At a previous ComicCon she met Tricia Helfer (Cylon Number Six), who had never seen True Blood and didn’t realize Ms. Bauer van Straten was also an actress.

“So I have this really awkward photo with Tricia Helfer somewhere.”

When asked about the True Blood Season 5 finale, neither actor could say much without spoilers. Ms. Bauer van Straten was happy with what Pam got to do during her scenes. Mr. Manganiello was thrilled to have Robert Patrick (Terminator 2) playing his father and said his scenes are sufficiently bloody.

This video is a very entertaining watch. The actors interact with friendship and humor that can’t be described and do it justice.

True Blood Renewed For Sixth Season

Our Favorite Show Will Be Back for More!

Alcide and SookieHBO has just recently announced that they have decided to renew True Blood for a sixth season. This is great news for fans of the show. Although we can surely expect more of what makes the show great, there will be a few changes. Most notably, the show’s creator Alan Ball will be stepping down. Although he will stay on as an executive producer, Nurse Jackie’s Mark Hudis will be taking over the running of the show. We’ve known for a while that Ball was leaving, but it hasn’t always been apparent who would be taking over. Only time will tell if it was the right choice.

Although True Blood is still Sunday night’s highest rated show, it is still experiencing a steady decline in viewers. How this is happening is beyond me, but make sure you and all your friends continue to tune in on Sunday nights to keep our favorite show alive. Or undead, at least.

Video: True Blood Cast Dishes Spoilers at Season 5 Premiere

New Couples, Old Adversaries, a Long Awaited Backstory:

Alexander Skarsgård, Anna Paquin, Stephen Moyer at True Blood Season 5 PremiereWhen the cast of HBO’s True Blood turned out for the Season 5 premiere, they were interviewed on the red carpet. Everyone was happy to share information and insights into their characters and the events of the show itself.

*Warning: Mild spoilers ahead!

Alan Ball said that Season 5 is the season of church and state. It’s the season of politics and religion from the vampire perspective. When asked about Scott Foley’s character, Patrick, Mr. Ball explained that he made a bad decision in the heat of battle and it has far reaching consequences. Finally, Mr. Ball alluded to the introduction of some new romantic couples. He couldn’t elaborate because it would give too many story details away.

Jacob Hopkins (Alexander) described his character as feisty and strong minded. He says Alexander grew more obnoxious with each episode.

Denis O’Hare (Russell Edgington) said that vampire politics are the focus of Season 5. Mr. O’Hare explained that when people are brought back to life, they have to lose something. With Russell’s resurrection, he has lost his vicious ambition. In its place are a playfulness, ease, and humor. But make no mistake, Russell is still really dangerous. He still kills a lot of people, and kills them with glee. When asked, Mr. O’Hare said it took Russell about 4-5 episodes to heal. Most intriguingly of all, Russell unexpectedly falls in love again.

“Something happens from across the room. Something happens while sharing a body. Someone you know. You’ll be very surprised  by it.”

Lucy Griffiths (Nora) explained that Nora and her ‘brother’ Eric love each other very much but haven’t seen one another in a long time. Their relationship can be very fraternal, in that they can be very aggressive toward each other. They make a great team when they work together but otherwise they just mess each other up.

Stephen Moyer (Bill Compton) talked of the close relationship that developed between his character and Eric Northman (Alexander Skarsgård).

“We’re good friends and it’s been a lot of fun. And we sort of love each other.”

Kristin Bauer van Straten (Pam) shared that Nora’s appearance caused a little bit of trouble for Pam. Ms. Bauer van Straten explained that she and Alex have been asking for Pam’s backstory for years and were thrilled to finally see it played out. She says the story explains the Pam we know.

Kelly Overton plays a new werewolf character named Rikki. She describes her character as a strong, resourceful werewolf, the opposite of the damsel in distress. She’s determined to find out what happened to the Pack Master and is not loving Alcide at the moment.

Rutina Wesley said that, despite people’s doubts, Tara is coming back.

Michael McMillian (Steve Newlin) said that becoming a vampire might be the best thing that’s ever happened to Steve. At first, he wondered if Steve would be self-loathing but the reality is, he’s very attracted to power. Jason is the guy Steve always wanted to be and he’s coming after Jason. But, Jason has a new vampire friend in Jessica.

“If you mess with Jason, you mess with Jessica.”

Apparently, the first four episodes are a Pam tour de force, and the origin story between Pam and Eric is fantastic. Fans don’t have long to wait now. Season 5 of True Blood premieres on HBO June 10th.

Check out the video below, if you’d prefer to skip to the good stuff (strictly True Blood related), it starts right before the 3-minute mark. Enjoy!
