The Inside True Blood blog posted another season 4 update written by Gianna Sobol assistant to True Blood creator Alan Ball. This post talks about Sam Trammell who plays Sam Merlotte. Gianna took us behind the scenes of season 4 and got a report from Sam, who was shooting on location with Chris Bauer (Andy Bellefleur). Sam was quoted as saying about the picture:
“It was too cold to sit that day. We were standing by the heaters.”

Wow! I went to PaleyFest 2011’s True Blood panel, and I’m still blown away by how amazing it was! It felt like the entire cast was there (all major characters were well represented), including the brains behind the show, Alan Ball. I should also mention that this Paley Fest panel actually took place at Saban Theatre in Beverly Hills, rather than at the actual Paley Center, which has far fewer seats.
The panel started late, and opened with a clip package from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Those of us in the audience who are/were Buffy fans cheered and clapped at this, since it can be argued that True Blood is the vampire show that took Buffy’s place on television and in film history. Afterwards, Alan came back to the podium to share a special clips package from True Blood seasons 1, 2, 3, and a special unfinished clip from season 4! The clip featured Jessica, Pam, Hoyt, and followers from the Fellowship of the Sun who were protesting in front of Fangtasia. Hoyt was a good boyfriend and defended himself, Jessica, and their relationship to the protesters. He told them that he felt he was a better Christian than they were because of the love in his heart, rather than the hatred. It was a beautiful scene, and I can’t wait to see the finished version when Season 4 finally begins this summer!
Right after that, the panel and it’s attendees were announced. My ears are still ringing from all the cheering for the cast! As shown in order in the photo below, there are 18 total people on stage. From left to right, they are: the moderator of the panel, Alan Ball, Anna Paquin (Sookie Stackhouse), Stephen Moyer (Bill Compton), Alexander Skarsgard (Eric Northman), Rutina Wesley (Tara Thornton), Sam Trammell (Sam Merlotte), Marshall Allman (Tommy Mickens), Ryan Kwanten (Jason Stackhouse), Chris Bauer (Andy Bellefleur), Carrie Preston (Arlene Fowler), Todd Lowe (Terry Bellefleur), Jim Parrack (Hoyt Fortenberry), Deborah Ann Woll (Jessica Hamby), Nelsan Ellis (Lafayette Reynolds), Kevin Alejandro (Jesus Velasquez), Kristin Bauer van Straten (Pam de Beaufort), and Joe Manganiello (Alcide Herveaux). Please click on the image of the cast to see a larger, cleaner version.
A majority of the panel focused on basic questions and answers, though lots of detail came out about the stars, their characters, and the future of True Blood. One of my favorite moments was when the actors all shared about their most embarrassing/awkward fan encounters, and Joe once again shared his story about a fan who asked him to lick her. Though the debacle has been shared before, the way in which Joe presented it had the audience groaning, laughing, and in my case, blushing furiously while trying not to laugh. Another favorite was Chris Bauer’s story, which ended up being a case of someone who didn’t recognize him, but instead told him that he had bird excrement on his back while at lunch with his wife. The audience howled at the story!
The story that I most appreciated came from Anna Paquin, and it wasn’t so much of a story as an experience she’s had several times over. Anna described how amused she is by fans who come over to say hi to her and Stephen Moyer, only to ogle Stephen and then pretend to be interested in Anna as well. Anna made the audience smile appreciatively after saying that she totally understands and is actually pretty okay with fans ogling her husband.
Several spoilers were spilled, and a couple of my favorites were very minor. When the moderator asked each actor who they hadn’t worked with yet but wanted to, Rutina and Kristin said that Tara and Pam should meet. Alan Ball confirmed that Sookie’s best friend and Eric’s right hand woman will meet in Season 4. The audience was ecstatic from the news and the cheers echoed quite a bit in the theatre! Once confirmed, Rutina and Kristin looked at each other and smiled.
Another spoiler I liked came from a question about what animals will be seen in Season 4. Of course, some are obvious, like dogs, wolves, and a few panthers. One that’s not so common? An alligator. When Alan confirmed that particular new creature, I was stunned to say the least. It leaves me curious as to why it might be important to the series.
One other comment made in the panel really made me think. When a fan asked if Bill and Sookie are still soul mates after everything that’s happened, the response was yes, but it will take a long time for them to get back together. While continuing to answer the question, Alan referred to Bill’s actions against Sookie as a “perceived” betrayal. That definitely leaves the show open to possibly have a flashback where we see what happened from Bill’s point of view, rather than just seeing what happened to Sookie and her take on it.
Aother sort-of non spoiler was about Jessica and Hoyt. We knew their relationship wouldn’t be easy (which was shown by that special clip aired at the panel), but I’ll be very upset if anything happens to them. I find them to be one of my favorite couples on True Blood, and they’re just so cute together!
Of course, a lot more was said, with hints for fans to not expect to see Niall yet (my fingers are remaining crossed that David Bowie will somehow play the part), more clues about Arlene’s evil baby, new shifters on the horizon, and some very important wiccans. Season 4 is going to be awesome!
To get a bit of a feel of what the panel was really like, check out this video clip that the Paley Center posted on their website:
Anyways, after the panel closed, fans rushed the stage to talk to the stars and get autographs. I became trapped in the throng, which was quite uncomfortable, but I did get to talk to Carrie Preston about her film That’s What She Said and tell her how excited I am to see it when it comes out. I also spoke to Todd Lowe as well as Alexander Skarsgard for a moment (he was very sweet to everyone and stayed later than almost all of the stars who were signing). Just when I figured that I couldn’t have any more luck, Sam Trammell came over and I got to speak with him as well!
As always, I came with gifts for a few members of the cast, but I was unable to deliver them to the stars by hand. Instead, one of the people at HBO took them from me and handed them out backstage. Kristin Bauer confirmed that she got my gifts, so I hope that everyone else did too.
I gave Kristin a pillow I created that was inspired by her character, Pam. (Though you can’t see it, the actual pillow within is made of a black fabric with silver spider webs on it in honor of Pam’s tough-as-nails-persona. The pink case is in honor of Pam’s favorite color.) I also gave Kristin a t-shirt I’d made previously that says Ravenscroft/Stackhouse 2012 on the front and ‘Pam for President’ on the back. (At the time I made the shirt, Pam’s last name had not been changed.) I also created a similar shirt for Anna, which says ‘Sookie for VP’ on the back. The final gift I brought was for Alan Ball. He too got a pillow, but that one was directly inspired by True Blood.

The True Blood panel at Paley was absolutely fantastic, and I still can’t believe I was lucky enough to get to go!

Have you ever wondered what it takes to get cast on True Blood? Gianna Sobol tackled the casting process in this latest installment of the Inside True Blood blog. Those who have been following the blog will recognize this post as part of the series Sobol is doing on the episode creation process and each step that is involved along the way.
Casting sessions take place in show creator Alan Ball’s office for every single role cast on the show. This includes every character from the ones who have no lines and appear in only one episode to those characters that have many lines and have multiple episode arcs.
Present in every casting session are casting directors Libby Goldstein and Junie Lowry-Johnson, casting associate Lisa Soltau, the writer for the episode, and the director for the episode. The actors are given “sides” or pages from the script to read.
So what makes True Blood’s casting process different from others in television? Alan Ball of course! He is present for every casting session no matter how big or small the role. After all, there are no small parts only small actors, right truebies?
Now that you have insight into the casting process, what do you think about it? Is it different than you originally imagined? Tell me in the comment section below!

In continuing Truebloodnet’s coverage of True Blood at PaleyFest 2011, I have for all of our dear truebies video interviews from creator Alan Ball and the cast that they did in the press tent prior to going onstage for the panel. I have chosen interviews from E! Online and Access Hollywood and because I am reporting from more than one source and covering many cast members who were interviewed more than once, this article will be posted in parts.
In this first part, Alan Ball, Kristin Bauer van Straten (Pam De Beaufort), and Alexander Skarsgård (Eric Northman) are interviewed about their impressions of season 4 thus far. Please note that if you have chosen to be spoiler-free this season that you should not proceed past this point. It’s completely filled with spoilers!
In this first video interview conducted by E! Online, Alan Ball is asked how he connects to the world that was created by author Charlaine Harris and he responds first by saying that since he grew up in a small town in the south, he can relate to being different. But he says that Harris’ series has given him the freedom in True Blood that he didn’t necessarily have in his previous HBO series Six Feet Under. Because our favorite show focuses on the world of the supernatural, it can go places that other realistically based shows cannot and still make sense:
Speaking of making sense, Access Hollywood asked Mr. Ball if season 4 would include events from the fourth book in the Sookie Stackhouse series. He replied that it would but when asked about the infamous shower scene that occurs in the book between Sookie (Anna Paquin) and Eric, he said that a shower scene will happen but it could lead elsewhere. Since this season has been dubbed “the Season of the Witch”, Alan did confirm that we will be meeting some witches, ghosts, new werewolves, new shifters, and new vampires. But of the witches, he says that their viewpoint coming in is that they have been assaulted which is one reason why others on the show may not like them. Interesting. Watch:
In E! Online’s interview with Alexander, he is asked how he feels being at Paleyfest. While he admits that it is overwhelming, it is also very rewarding and flattering to know that people care as much as he does. So truebies, what do you think Alexander gets asked about the most for season 4? Two words: pink spandex. Watch:
By now, it is no secret that Eric loses his mind thanks to a witch. Why exactly he does lose it on the show remains a secret to fans. But when asked by Access Hollywood if this is the season of Eric, Alexander replied that Eric will have a lot to deal with this season and that he is pretty much a really big baby in need of protection:
Like her vampire counterpart Alexander, Kristin was also asked by E! Online about her frequently asked questions from fans. She says that women want to know what it’s like working with the “tall Swede” and while she says that she used to say how wonderful he is, now she makes up things like saying he’s a pain in the ass! That’s when you know that actors spend lots of time together. Kristin discussed being around fans of the show and how it’s nice to learn about what people are interested in given that there is such a large buffer between the actors and audience normally:
But what can we expect for Pam in season 4? A very excited Kristin informs Access Hollywood that so much good stuff is going to happen for her character that she doesn’t want to give anything away. But she does say that Pam continues to be tested beyond the limits of where season three saw her go. And not only does Pam get to leave Fangtasia but she also gets to interact with witches! Watch:
Those are all the interviews I have for the moment. But more are forthcoming so stay tuned to TBN for more season 4 interviews from Paley!

An Insider’s Look at PaleyFestGianna Sobol, assistant to creator Alan Ball was on hand at this year’s True Blood panel at PaleyFest 2011. And while she was there, she observed a few things that might not have made it into the coverage of the event that we the fans have been eagerly reading. Chris Bauer (Andy Bellefleur) claimed during the panel that he didn’t get recognized all that often.
In fact, Alan Ball said that the story of Chris thinking he was being recognized but actually being told he had bird excrement on him was one of his favorite moments. But one thing is for sure, Chris has perfected his signature as you can see from the picture on the right. Backstage posters were set up for the cast to sign and Chris has a very nice John Hancock.
However, the best backstage tidbit has to be the one about Alexander Skarsgård’s (Eric Northman) infamous wig from season 1:
While the clip reel played for the PaleyFest audience, the cast and their guests huddled backstage to watch on a little screen of their own. When they showed clips of Eric with his long hair from season 1, another cast member turned to Alexander Skarsgård and said, “You miss the wig, right?” Everyone laughed, knowing he does not miss the wig.
So that’s it for now trubies! But stay tuned to TBN for more on PaleyFest 2011 including a few videos and fan experiences coming very soon.

A lot of work goes into creating each episode of True Blood! In another new post on the Inside True Blood Blog, Gianna Sobol told fans about what goes into a concept meeting, as well as who attends each meeting.
For the average concept meeting, Alan Ball, Gregg Fienberg, the department heads, and the writer/director team of each episode all meet up and discuss the various aspects of that week’s work. In 1st Assistant Director Sunday Steven’s own words:
“The concept meeting, led by the 1st Assistant Director, is the first meeting that brings all the department heads together. We go through the script to discuss the different elements in each scene that have to be addressed. For example, if we have an action scene with a panther, we have to discuss stunts, animal wrangling, make-up effects and visual effects to figure out how to make the sequence work on the day we shoot it. This is a chance for each department head to figure out who should be doing what and how they can go about doing that. It is essentially the beginning of prep for the department heads.”
That’s a huge amount of work just to prepare to film True Blood. Of course, it all pays off in the end with a fabulous final result that Truebies can’t stop talking about!

Have you ever wondered what goes in to producing an episode of True Blood? The short answer would be a lot! But writer behind the Inside True Blood blog has decided to answer that particular question in a series of postings with the first one being about the tone meeting.
In the context of a play, a book, or a television show such as True Blood the tone generally refers to the style of that work or in this case television show. In True Blood, a tone meeting is the first step in the production process for show creator Alan Ball, executive producer Greg Feinberg, the director for the episode, and the cinematographer to all sit down together for the first time and go through the episode at hand.
This is important to do because in going through the episode they discuss issues of tone and style of the show, especially directors that are new to working with the show. This helps ensure that everyone is on the same page about the episode and that it fits within the whole rest of the season. For example, if Eric (Alexander Skarsgård) and Bill (Stephen Moyer) suddenly became the best of friends in an episode when the audience knows that they’re had their share of issues for three seasons, that would look strange now wouldn’t it?
So that is why the tone meeting is the first step in the production process.
Are you interested to know what goes on behind the scenes of True Blood? What do you think are some of the other steps to producing the show? Tell us in the comment section below!

HBO has launched its very own True Blood blog, chock full of inside news, tasty tidbits, and exclusive interviews. Everything, straight from the horse’s mouth! It went live on February 11th, which just happens to be my birthday (best birthday present ever!). Followers of HBO‘s True Blood Twitter account were among the first to hear the news, as seen above.
The blog is written by Gianna Sobol, a Los Angeles native who has been working for Alan Ball for two years. Now that’s as “inside” as it gets! So far, she has given us three mini interviews with Alan Ball, Gary Calamar (music supervisor), and Jim Parrack (Hoyt). Mr. Ball was asked, “What are you most excited about this season?”, to which he replied, “I really love the Eric storyline.” Goodness gracious, I love this blog already. Another reason to love it? Our very own website, TrueBloodNet.com is featured in the sidebar under “Links”! We are humbled and honored. Thank you kindly, Gianna, for the mention, and for the new blog — a most welcome reprieve during our impatient wait for Season 4. Keep up the good work!

Anna Paquin (Sookie Stackhouse) and husband Stephen Moyer (Bill Compton) are auctioning off a rare piece of True Blood memorabilia for charity. The auction, in an effort to raise money for the Darnell Family Fund, helps support four orphaned children who lost both parents and a sibling tragically last year. The Season 3, Episode 12 script, titled “Evil Is Going On” is signed not only by Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer, but also by series creator Alan Ball.

TV Line’s Michael Ausiello recently shared some interesting information about season four of HBO’s True Blood. He teased readers by asking if they remembered season three‘s shocking sex scene between Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer) and his maker Lorena Krasiki (Mariana Klaveno)…and really, who could possibly forget that moment? It is certainly in everyone’s top ten jaw dropping moments from any season of True Blood. Well, according to Ausiello,
… word around Bon Temps is that there’s a sequence in the upcoming fourth season that will have folks buzzing just as (if not more) loudly. The character at the center of said scene? One Jason Stackhouse (Ryan Kwanten).
That certainly sounds tantalizing, doesn’t it? Many fans will probably interpret this to mean that things between Jason and his new werepanther love interest, Crystal Norris (Lindsay Pulsipher) are about to get interesting.
When asked about Alcide Herveaux‘s (Joe Manganiello) relationship with Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), Ausiello had this to share (straight from Alan Ball himself):
“I think Alcide has already developed real feelings for her,” responds exec producer Alan Ball. “But there are certainly obstacles to overcome for both of them.”
Season four is shaping up to be full of romantic tension. I don’t know what I’m looking forward to most. What about you?

Charlaine Harris, author of the Sookie Stackhouse novels, recently confirmed to fans on her Facebook page that there will in fact be a twelfth Sookie novel. She began work on it recently, but commented that she “should have started it in November, but I had to take some time off.” With Sookie novels usually debuting in May, this means that fans can look forward to Dead Reckoning this May, which will be the eleventh book, and then the as yet untitled twelfth book in May of 2012 (that’s just speculation, based on the release dates of all the other novels, and Harris’s own comment that “Sookie is ALWAYS in May — the full length novels, that is.”)
This year, Harris has several projects slated for release that should excite both fans of her Sookie Stackhouse novels and die hard Truebies. As previously mentioned, Dead Reckoning, the eleventh Sookie novel, will be released on May 3, 2011. The first chapter is available on Harris’s official website. The cover, released in November, gives plenty of tidbits to speculate about – Sookie is alone on the covers, surrounded by burning pages falling from the sky.
In September of this year, The Sookie Stackhouse Companion will be released. Originally slated for an earlier release, it got pushed back due to confusion amongst the contributors. The books promises an all new Sookie novella, and an exclusive interview with Alan Ball. Although Harris has stated the release is scheduled for September, Amazon.com has the official date listed as August 31. 2011. I’m sure no one will complain about getting their hands on it a day early!
Both books are available for pre-order now. Are you looking forward to them?

The website Digital Spy recently gathered together several articles featuring creator Alan Ball and cast members Stephen Moyer (Bill Compton) and Rutina Wesley (Tara Thorton) discussing season 4. While none of them are specific about things happening in season 4, there is quite a bit of hint dropping!
Alan Ball told TV Line he suspects that Alcide Herveaux (Joe Manganiello) has already fallen for our heroine Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin). However, he maintains that even if Sookie had mutual feelings for him, they would have quite a bit to overcome as a couple. But anything is possible, especially considering the state of Sookie’s love life at the end of last season.
Cast member Stephen Moyer (Bill Compton) recently hinted to E! Online that there will be a new dark presence in season 4 originated by Denis O’Hare (Russell Edgington) in Season 3:
“We have a new presence that will be a new kind of spectre that represents darkness. We had the wonderful Denis O’Hare as the king of Mississippi last year who is gone at the end of season 3, so we got something else coming in to replace that darkness, which is going to be really interesting, I think, this whole new topic we have not covered.”
I hope Denis O’Hare comes back as Russell because they left the story line open and Denis himself has hinted that he might be back this season.
Rutina Wesley (Tara Thornton) recently spoke to Access Hollywood and has described season 4 as crazy and exciting. She also said that the new season will bring changes for Tara. She hopes that the character will gain power and strength. At the end of season three Tara actually left Bon Temps. So does that mean Tara comes back? Rutina didn’t answer that inquiry but she did say:
“That is the big question. I can’t tell you that. I love my job too much”
So Truebies, what do you think about the teasers Alan, Stephen, and Rutina gave us? Does it make you hopeful for the new season? Tell us in the comments section!

Alan Ball, creator of HBO’s highly successful shows ‘True Blood’ and ‘Six Feet Under‘, has enjoyed immense success and popularity with his television projects. Unfortunately however, his most recent drama project was passed up by the premium cable network.
Ball directed and executive produced the pilot for a new show entitled ‘All Signs of Death’, which is based on Charlie Huston‘s noir novel “The Mystic Arts of Erasing All Signs of Death”.
There is speculation that HBO simply could not find a spot for the new show in its lineup: the medieval fantasy ‘Game of Thrones,’ is due in April and several other projects are waiting for a series’ verdict. It certainly seems as if Alan Ball hits nothing but home runs so it would have been interesting to see if ‘All Signs of Death’ was up to par.
Was this a wise decision in your opinion? Are you interested in new Alan Ball series creations?
