True Blood at PaleyFest 2011: A Fan’s Perspective

Wow! I went to PaleyFest 2011’s True Blood panel, and I’m still blown away by how amazing it was! It felt like the entire cast was there (all major characters were well represented), including the brains behind the show, Alan Ball. I should also mention that this Paley Fest panel actually took place at Saban Theatre in Beverly Hills, rather than at the actual Paley Center, which has far fewer seats.

The panel started late, and opened with a clip package from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Those of us in the audience who are/were Buffy fans cheered and clapped at this, since it can be argued that True Blood is the vampire show that took Buffy’s place on television and in film history. Afterwards, Alan came back to the podium to share a special clips package from True Blood seasons 1, 2, 3, and a special unfinished clip from season 4! The clip featured Jessica, Pam, Hoyt, and followers from the Fellowship of the Sun who were protesting in front of Fangtasia. Hoyt was a good boyfriend and defended himself, Jessica, and their relationship to the protesters. He told them that he felt he was a better Christian than they were because of the love in his heart, rather than the hatred. It was a beautiful scene, and I can’t wait to see the finished version when Season 4 finally begins this summer!

Right after that, the panel and it’s attendees were announced. My ears are still ringing from all the cheering for the cast! As shown in order in the photo below, there are 18 total people on stage. From left to right, they are: the moderator of the panel, Alan Ball, Anna Paquin (Sookie Stackhouse), Stephen Moyer (Bill Compton), Alexander Skarsgard (Eric Northman), Rutina Wesley (Tara Thornton), Sam Trammell (Sam Merlotte), Marshall Allman (Tommy Mickens), Ryan Kwanten (Jason Stackhouse), Chris Bauer (Andy Bellefleur), Carrie Preston (Arlene Fowler), Todd Lowe (Terry Bellefleur), Jim Parrack (Hoyt Fortenberry), Deborah Ann Woll (Jessica Hamby), Nelsan Ellis (Lafayette Reynolds), Kevin Alejandro (Jesus Velasquez), Kristin Bauer van Straten (Pam de Beaufort), and Joe Manganiello (Alcide Herveaux). Please click on the image of the cast to see a larger, cleaner version.

A majority of the panel focused on basic questions and answers, though lots of detail came out about the stars, their characters, and the future of True Blood. One of my favorite moments was when the actors all shared about their most embarrassing/awkward fan encounters, and Joe once again shared his story about a fan who asked him to lick her. Though the debacle has been shared before, the way in which Joe presented it had the audience groaning, laughing, and in my case, blushing furiously while trying not to laugh. Another favorite was Chris Bauer’s story, which ended up being a case of someone who didn’t recognize him, but instead told him that he had bird excrement on his back while at lunch with his wife. The audience howled at the story!

The story that I most appreciated came from Anna Paquin, and it wasn’t so much of a story as an experience she’s had several times over. Anna described how amused she is by fans who come over to say hi to her and Stephen Moyer, only to ogle Stephen and then pretend to be interested in Anna as well. Anna made the audience smile appreciatively after saying that she totally understands and is actually pretty okay with fans ogling her husband.

Several spoilers were spilled, and a couple of my favorites were very minor. When the moderator asked each actor who they hadn’t worked with yet but wanted to, Rutina and Kristin said that Tara and Pam should meet. Alan Ball confirmed that Sookie’s best friend and Eric’s right hand woman will meet in Season 4. The audience was ecstatic from the news and the cheers echoed quite a bit in the theatre! Once confirmed, Rutina and Kristin looked at each other and smiled.

Another spoiler I liked came from a question about what animals will be seen in Season 4. Of course, some are obvious, like dogs, wolves, and a few panthers. One that’s not so common? An alligator. When Alan confirmed that particular new creature, I was stunned to say the least. It leaves me curious as to why it might be important to the series.

One other comment made in the panel really made me think. When a fan asked if Bill and Sookie are still soul mates after everything that’s happened, the response was yes, but it will take a long time for them to get back together. While continuing to answer the question, Alan referred to Bill’s actions against Sookie as a “perceived” betrayal. That definitely leaves the show open to possibly have a flashback where we see what happened from Bill’s point of view, rather than just seeing what happened to Sookie and her take on it.

Aother sort-of non spoiler was about Jessica and Hoyt. We knew their relationship wouldn’t be easy (which was shown by that special clip aired at the panel), but I’ll be very upset if anything happens to them. I find them to be one of my favorite couples on True Blood, and they’re just so cute together!

Of course, a lot more was said, with hints for fans to not expect to see Niall yet (my fingers are remaining crossed that David Bowie will somehow play the part), more clues about Arlene’s evil baby, new shifters on the horizon, and some very important wiccans. Season 4 is going to be awesome!

To get a bit of a feel of what the panel was really like, check out this video clip that the Paley Center posted on their website:

Anyways, after the panel closed, fans rushed the stage to talk to the stars and get autographs. I became trapped in the throng, which was quite uncomfortable, but I did get to talk to Carrie Preston about her film That’s What She Said and tell her how excited I am to see it when it comes out. I also spoke to Todd Lowe as well as Alexander Skarsgard for a moment (he was very sweet to everyone and stayed later than almost all of the stars who were signing). Just when I figured that I couldn’t have any more luck, Sam Trammell came over and I got to speak with him as well!

As always, I came with gifts for a few members of the cast, but I was unable to deliver them to the stars by hand. Instead, one of the people at HBO took them from me and handed them out backstage. Kristin Bauer confirmed that she got my gifts, so I hope that everyone else did too.

I gave Kristin a pillow I created that was inspired by her character, Pam. (Though you can’t see it, the actual pillow within is made of a black fabric with silver spider webs on it in honor of Pam’s tough-as-nails-persona. The pink case is in honor of Pam’s favorite color.) I also gave Kristin a t-shirt I’d made previously that says Ravenscroft/Stackhouse 2012 on the front and ‘Pam for President’ on the back. (At the time I made the shirt, Pam’s last name had not been changed.) I also created a similar shirt for Anna, which says ‘Sookie for VP’ on the back. The final gift I brought was for Alan Ball. He too got a pillow, but that one was directly inspired by True Blood.

Videos: Alan Ball and Cast Discuss True Blood Season 4 at PaleyFest Part 1

Interviews at PaleyFest 2011

Paley Fest BannerIn continuing Truebloodnet’s coverage of True Blood at PaleyFest 2011, I have for all of our dear truebies video interviews from creator Alan Ball and the cast that they did in the press tent prior to going onstage for the panel. I have chosen interviews from E! Online and Access Hollywood and because I am reporting from more than one source and covering many cast members who were interviewed more than once, this article will be posted in parts.

In this first part, Alan Ball, Kristin Bauer van Straten (Pam De Beaufort), and Alexander Skarsgård (Eric Northman) are interviewed about their impressions of season 4 thus far. Please note that if you have chosen to be spoiler-free this season that you should not proceed past this point. It’s completely filled with spoilers!

Series Creator Alan Ball

In this first video interview conducted by E! Online, Alan Ball is asked how he connects to the world that was created by author Charlaine Harris and he responds first by saying that since he grew up in a small town in the south, he can relate to being different. But he says that Harris’ series has given him the freedom in True Blood that he didn’t necessarily have in his previous HBO series Six Feet Under. Because our favorite show focuses on the world of the supernatural, it can go places that other realistically based shows cannot and still make sense:

Speaking of making sense, Access Hollywood asked Mr. Ball if season 4 would include events from the fourth book in the Sookie Stackhouse series. He replied that it would but when asked about the infamous shower scene that occurs in the book between Sookie (Anna Paquin) and Eric, he said that a shower scene will happen but it could lead elsewhere. Since this season has been dubbed “the Season of the Witch”, Alan did confirm that we will be meeting some witches, ghosts, new werewolves, new shifters, and new vampires. But of the witches, he says that their viewpoint coming in is that they have been assaulted which is one reason why others on the show may not like them. Interesting. Watch:

Alexander Skarsgård (Eric Northman)

In E! Online’s interview with Alexander, he is asked how he feels being at Paleyfest. While he admits that it is overwhelming, it is also very rewarding and flattering to know that people care as much as he does. So truebies, what do you think Alexander gets asked about the most for season 4? Two words: pink spandex. Watch:

By now, it is no secret that Eric loses his mind thanks to a witch. Why exactly he does lose it on the show remains a secret to fans. But when asked by Access Hollywood if this is the season of Eric, Alexander replied that Eric will have a lot to deal with this season and that he is pretty much a really big baby in need of protection:

Kristin Bauer van Straten (Pam de Beaufort)

Like her vampire counterpart Alexander, Kristin was also asked by E! Online about her frequently asked questions from fans. She says that women want to know what it’s like working with the “tall Swede” and while she says that she used to say how wonderful he is, now she makes up things like saying he’s a pain in the ass! That’s when you know that actors spend lots of time together. Kristin discussed being around fans of the show and how it’s nice to learn about what people are interested in given that there is such a large buffer between the actors and audience normally:

But what can we expect for Pam in season 4? A very excited Kristin informs Access Hollywood that so much good stuff is going to happen for her character that she doesn’t want to give anything away. But she does say that Pam continues to be tested beyond the limits of where season three saw her go. And not only does Pam get to leave Fangtasia but she also gets to interact with witches! Watch:

Those are all the interviews I have for the moment. But more are forthcoming so stay tuned to TBN for more season 4 interviews from Paley!

PaleyFest 2011: Things Seen and Heard at the True Blood Panel

 An Insider’s Look at PaleyFest

Gianna Sobol, assistant to creator Alan Ball was on hand at this year’s True Blood panel at PaleyFest 2011. And while she was there, she observed a few things that might not have made it into the coverage of the event that we the fans have been eagerly reading. Chris Bauer (Andy Bellefleur) claimed during the panel that he didn’t get recognized all that often.

In fact, Alan Ball said that the story of Chris thinking he was being recognized but actually being told he had bird excrement on him was one of his favorite moments. But one thing is for sure, Chris has perfected his signature as you can see from the picture on the right. Backstage posters were set up for the cast to sign and Chris has a very nice John Hancock.

However, the best backstage tidbit has to be the one about Alexander Skarsgård’s (Eric Northman) infamous wig from season 1:

While the clip reel played for the PaleyFest audience, the cast and their guests huddled backstage to watch on a little screen of their own. When they showed clips of Eric with his long hair from season 1, another cast member turned to Alexander Skarsgård and said, “You miss the wig, right?” Everyone laughed, knowing he does not miss the wig.

So that’s it for now trubies! But stay tuned to TBN for more on PaleyFest 2011 including a few videos and fan experiences coming very soon.

True Blood Cast Talks Characters and Crazy Fans

A Q&A Session with the Cast of True Blood:

PaleyFest 2011 True Blood posterWith all the secrecy surrounding Season 4 of HBO‘s True Blood, it’s a wonder we ever get any details.  Luckily, that hunger was sated, if just a bit, at this year’s PaleyFest.  Besides the spoilers, teasers, and videos that were shared, there was time for a little Q&A.  Sixteen of the cast members were on stage for the Q&A that follows:

Where would you like to see your character go?

Alexander Skarsgård (Eric): “Eric is lost. He is vulnerable and trying to figure out who he is. But I would love to see some flashbacks with Godric and Pam, to see how they all got here.”

Todd Lowe (Terry): “Terry thinks the evil can just be parented out of Arlene’s baby.”

Jim Parrack (Hoyt): “Mom will never accept her son’s chosen mate.” Despite that, Jim hopes that Hoyt and Jess can get married. “I would love to tackle the political implications – both on and off the show – of us getting married.”

Rutina Wesley (Tara): “You will be surprised to find out where Tara went after the season finale. Don’t worry, it’s someplace cool. We’ll see a more stable, happy Tara. I’d like to see some Tara and Pam action.”

Have you had any creepy or crazy fan interactions?

Joe Manganiello (Alcide): “Some people say that wolf or canine saliva can heal wounds. At Comicon one year, a woman came up and ask me to lick her, in order to heal her wounds. Security escorted her out.”

Stephen Moyer (Bill): “Men will ask me to leave a voicemail for their wives as Bill because they say it will get them so laid. Sometimes I will do it.”

Anna Paquin (Sookie): “I love watching the women who pretend to want my autograph when really, they only care about meeting my husband. I don’t care; I find it entertaining.”

We all have our different desires for what should happen next season… do any of yours coincide with what you’ve read here?

True Blood Season 4 is Coming this Summer

True Blood Season Three PosterPremiere Date Not Set

The anticipation for True Blood season 4 is palpable among fans especially now that creator Alan Ball and the cast have appeared at this year’s PaleyFest. In light of this appearance, @TrueBloodHBO the official True Blood twitter account took to the social networking site to clear up a very important issue, namely the date of the season 4 premiere.

View the first official True Blood Season 4 Teaser

Our readers may recall that in the course of many articles we have written that June 14, 2011 was going to be the day that we have all been waiting very anxiously for. However, according to HBO that is simply not the case. The show’s twitter account stated:

Let’s clear up any confusion. The Season 4 premiere date of #TrueBlood on @HBO has not yet been announced. Summer 2011 is all we know. Xo

So Truebies it looks like we’re going to have to add waiting for an official start date to the list of True Blood things we can’t wait for. But rest assured that when that information is released, TrueBloodNet will let you know as soon as we do!  But in the meantime, what can you do to make the wait just a little more bearable?

Joe Manganiello Gossips about True Blood’s Boy Sandwiches

The WereHunk Talked to Access Hollywood about Season Four at PaleyFest 2011:

Joe Manganiello talks about True Blood at PaleyFest 2011True Bloodfan favorite Joe Manganiello (Alcide Herveaux) revealed some excitingly delicious details to Access Hollywood on the red carpet at PaleyFest, one in which he promises there will be lots of boy sandwiches on the season four menu. Um, yes please!

“There’s definitely going to be some boy sandwiches this year with Sookie in the middle. For sure!”

Manganiello’s smile when talking about the chemistry between Alcide andSookie really says it all! And now that the 34 year old is a series regular, Manganiello couldn’t be happier about his place among his fellow cast-members:

“I really feel like I have a place at the table now. Where last year I felt like a kid getting bussed to another school in another district and this year I actually feel like I belong. I have a home there.”

Up until recently, Manganiello was being courted to play the role of Superman in the film’s 2012 reboot, Superman: Man of Steel. He was asked to screen test for the role and even got so far as giving his measurements for the suit, but the timing just didn’t work out.  Manganiello let some big news slip, indicating that filming for Superman would have taken up 11 weeks of his ‘True Blood’ season five schedule. So, season five, huh?! Best. News. Ever. Check out the interview in its entirety below:

True Blood’s Lafayette is Lonely No More

Nelsan Ellis Talks to The TV Junkie at PaleyFest 2011

True Blood's Nelsan Ellis at PaleyFest 2011If you haven’t already heard, this year’s PaleyFest was raucous good fun for the True Blood cast and fans. We got a little delicious sneak peak at season four and we saw a lot of great interviews. The TV Junkie has just released a short video interview with Nelsan Ellis (Lafayette Reynolds), in which Ellis chats about his alter ego’s (sometimes) lonely life. As Alan Ball has said in the past, characters are only allowed to be happy for one episode, which is evident in the rollercoaster of emotions that the characters ride from one episode to the next. When asked about Lafayette’s loneliness, Ellis disagreed that his character appeared to be one of the lonelier habitants of Bon Temps, but then changed his mind:

“…yeah, it sounds like a sad life, like a very sad life…he did go home by himself and service people when they came…but now he has somebody who’s a fixture in his house and he’s certainly not lonely this season. We learn last season that Jesus is a brujo, which is a witch, a wiccan…and he’s my protection.”

While Ellis doesn’t delve deeper into the flourishing relationship between Lafayette and Jesus, he has (coyly) said recently that Lafayette trusts Jesus because he’s under his spell. Does that mean that Jesus has literally put a spell on Lafayette to get him to fall for him? Or, is he figuratively speaking about the spell-like feelings evoked by Jesus’ charm and handsomeness?! What do you think Truebies?

The Paley Center for Media recently announced that it is accepting questions online via its website for the festival. Update on Who Will Be Attending PaleyFest

Alexander Skarsgård (Eric Northman) was the only confirmed member of the show’s cast and creative team when I reported the PaleyFest Lineup last week. But as of today, I am pleased to announce that yet another cast member has also confirmed that she will be on the True Blood panel! Over the weekend I quietly tweeted Kristin Bauer Van Straten (Pamela Swynford De Beaufort) to ask if she would be attending and was pleasantly surprised to receive the following response:

“Yes! I’ll be at Paley Fest!!!”

So there you have it Truebies! One of our favorite duos on the show will be at PaleyFest together in what seems to be their first joint appearance. TBN will announce who else will be at the Saban Theatre if and when it becomes available. If you would like to ask a question of the True Blood panel, click here.
