An Interview with Charlaine Harris

October 29, 2010 by

Discussing Her Writing Method, Current, and Future Projects

Charlaine Harris author of Southern Vampire Mysteries, Sookie Stackhouse novelsNew York Times bestselling author Charlaine Harris has written dozens of novels and short stories including the wonderful Southern Vampire Mysteries. The world Mrs. Harris has created in the Sookie Stackhouse novels is of course the basis for the hit HBO series, True Blood. Supernatural author Jonathan Maberry recently had the opportunity to interview the talented Charlaine Harris about her writing method, True Blood and her future projects.

Mrs. Harris describes the Sookie Stackhouse series as a “romantic vampire mystery adventure.” The characters, unknowing of what their future holds, compel the story to come to life for her as she writes. She discloses that her writing process from concept to manuscript is “chaotic” and she considers herself a “seat of the pants writer.” One has to wonder after the dozens of novels and short stories she’s written, what she does to keep the process enjoyable. Mrs. Harris explains:

“I’m still looking for the magic procedure that will make writing easy. After all these books, that still eludes me. I like being alone in my brain with the characters.”

When asked about the changes in the Sookie Stackhouse series for the television show True Blood and why they seem to do so well, she replies:

“I have no idea. You’d have to ask Alan (Alan Ball). I’m okay with the changes, because I know the real story.”

Mrs. Harris fills us in on her current project, an anthology written with her friend Toni L.P. Kelner titled ‘Home Improvement: Undead Edition’. While a bit behind schedule, she is quite certain it will be published on time.

To wrap the interview, Mrs. Harris was asked what is next for her:

“I have to start work on Sookie 12 – Sookie 11, DEAD RECKONING, is almost ready for copyediting, and it’s out of my life. And I’d like to write something completely different. “

I can hardly wait for Dead Reckonings and the companion book. Some of the changes are good and some not so good. I love Laffy and Jessica. The Maryann storyline was a little much. Forbes did a wonderful job with the part though. I think she would have made a good Hallow.

    • Ashera

The Maryanne storyline was a bit much yes and I agree very much that Michelle would have made a hell of a Hallow! I’m always counting the days for a new Charlaine book 😉 In this case especially Dead Reckonings! I’m very curious about the Sam/Sookie storyline.. and another spoiler.. ^^

  • Ashera

Thank God for the real story and of course thank you Charlaine! I was never really ok with all the changes made, but hearing Charlaine say she’s okay with it because she knows the real story always helps a lot! (I do have to say thank you Alan for Lafayette not dying and for giving us Jessica :P)

Ashera, I completely agree. The best changes Alan made were keeping Lafayette alive and adding Jessica. Other changes, not so much, but I’ve learned to separate the books from the series and like Charlaine herself said “I know the real story”, and so do I.

Can’t wait for Dead Reckoning and the companion book also Caitlin. Hope we finally get the blood bond answer.

It sounds a little like CH is getting tired of writing Sookie stories. Can’t blame her I guess but it’s a shame for us.

Yes, jaxx it does seem like CH is getting tired of writing them. Who can blame her though because she has written 11 already. I don’t know how she keeps coming up with stories for it. I did find the last book a little scattered. I still enjoyed it. I would rather have CH end the series while it’s still good as opposed to it becoming boring. We want to know who Sookie does or does not pick already. If she picks Sam I think that would be to predictable.

Ashera, sadly I wouldn’t be surprised if Sookie made out with Sam in the companion book. She is a serial kisser. It should be interesting going to the wedding. Sookie needs a break to just relax. I’m sure some trouble will happen at the wedding. Trouble seems to follow Sookie.
