Denis O’Hare Talks About True Blood and His New Broadway Role

Denis on Playing a Mental Patient in ‘Elling’:

Denis O'HareTrue Blood‘s Denis O’Hare, who plays the King of Mississippi, Russell Edgington, will next week play a completely different character on Broadway. In the show Elling,’ Tony Award winner O’Hare takes on the role of a mental patient who is trying to fit back into society.

O’Hare stars alongside Brendan Fraser in the production that is based upon the novels by Ingvar Ambjornsen. The two actors play newly-released mental patients that are living in Oslo, Norway. O’Hare’s character has a wicked temper yet is a  frightened, obsessive person who is afraid of answering the phone or leaving the building.

Denis shares that he was able to draw from his own phobias and bad temper for the role.

Anyone who has known me has said ‘I had a Denis O’Hare moment.’ I suppose in the kindest instance it means standing up for yourself. In the unkindest, it means ‘the crazy guy in the street.’

Denis O'Hare, True Blood's Russell Edgington on Broadway in 'Elling'

Russell’s Fangs & What Happens When You’ve Had Too Much True Blood:

When asked, Denis had lots to say about playing a vampire on HBO’s True Blood, especially about the fangs, of which he has two pairs: one soft set and one hard. The soft ones (logically) are used for scenes involving ‘biting’.

While not allowed to take the fangs home, O’Hare did have a pair made for his long-time partner who he says, would like to one day use them while ordering a martini on a plane.

As for the blood, there are two types as well: edible and non-edible. The most popular is the edible variety which is made from pomegranate juice thickened with corn starch. There’s also a minty- flavored version. But, while the bloody scenes may look great on TV, Denis confides that take-after-take of ingesting the edible version once left him feeling ill.

Russell Edgington and Gay Rights:

Probably the most infamous Russell moment involved him ripping out the spine of a newscaster in the middle of a broadcast. O’Hare admits he channeled part of the character’s rage from his own anger over the political climate on gay marriage. O’Hare says that that there could be a parallel drawn between vampire rights and gay marriage, but is hesitant to use it himself.

I’m somewhat resist the whole gay rights-vampire rights metaphor because it is fraught with problems. I don’t want to be seen as a gay man (acting) as a blood-sucking killer. I don’t think it is the way to win hearts and minds.

O’Hare’s Life: A Mix of Triumph and Tragedy

A long-time gay activist, Denis always knew that he was gay but it took awhile for him to fully accept it. As a teen, O’Hare dated women as well.

After high school, Denis went on to work as both a bartender and a waiter — not the best occupations for him given that he had drinking issues. Later, O’Hare gave up the drink when his then-boyfriend gave him an ultimatum. He has now been sober since May 22, 1989.

Besides the alcohol, O’Hare has faced other daunting challenges: Denis was aware of his partner’s HIV status and ultimately, his boyfriend died. He has this to say about it:

“I thought about it and decided you don’t get to pick who you love.”

O’Hare met his present partner, interior designer Hugo Redwood, several months after the death of his late partner. Despite noting that he is ‘never sure what he will be coming home to,’ O’Hare says of his life with Redwood,

“I am completely myself with him. It’s very comfortable. I just keep coming up with the word ‘serene.’”

It’s nice to see Mr. O’Hare share so much of himself in an interview. We here at TrueBloodNet.com wish him the very best in his current role in Elling, and look forward to seeing him in the future on True Blood.

True Blood Mini-Reunion in New York

Three True Blood Stars Hang Out Backstage at Elling

Denis O’Hare is busy working on his Broadway play Elling, but that doesn’t mean he’s not seeing his True Blood friends and costars. Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer visited Denis backstage at the November 16th performance of Elling.

Though Denis played Russell Edgington, an enemy to both Sookie Stackhouse and Bill Compton on the third season of True Blood, there’s no bad blood between the actors behind the characters. Broadway.com photographer Bruce Glikas caught the trio hanging out and took a picture of them.

The camaraderie that Anna, Denis, and Stephen share doesn’t mean that True Blood fans aren’t hoping to see Season 4 include more clashes between Bill, Russell, and Sookie. If we’re lucky, we’ll soon see those dreams made into reality when True Blood begins filming again!

Video: Denis O’Hare Talks True Blood vs. Broadway

True Blood’s Denis O’Hare Set to Hit Broadway in November

Denis O'Hare as Russell Eddington in a scene from True Blood.

Denis O’Hare, True Blood’s king of Mississipi Russell Edgington, recently opened up to TheaterMania about working on Broadway versus True Blood.

TheaterMania caught up with O’Hare at a press event he was at for his new Broadway show Elling. The play, which follows a pair of mismatched friends as they take their first steps in the world after living in an institution, will begin previews in November at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre.

O’Hare told the interviewer going from True Blood back to theater was a big journey. He said most people do not realize how incredibly difficult theater work is, because you rehearse all day and perform live eight times a week.

He did admit television is incredibly difficult in its own way, because you work long hours, but you do get downtime to rejuvenate.

You can catch Denis O’Hare on Broadway beginning November 2nd in Elling, directed by Doug Hughes.

True Blood’s Denis O’Hare Hosts AFC Dinner

Denis O’Hare Raises Money For Homeless LGBT Teens

Denis O'Hare at Ali Forney Center EventThe Vampire King of Mississippi is feeding the children rather than eating them. How cool is that? Broadway veteran and Tony award winning actor, Denis O’Hare (Russell Edgington), raised more than $100,000 for homeless LGBT teens when he hosted more than 120 supporters at the Ali Forney Center’s (AFC) Fall dinner – A Place at the Table – on Thursday, October 7.

Celebrities Ally Sheedy, Mike Ruiz, and others joined O’Hare at this special fund-raising event created to provide facilities, free medical care, HIV testing, job training and placement, computer access, and mental health services to homeless LGBT teens in Chelsea and Brooklyn. The AFC also awarded its first Advocate Awards to Mitchell Gold, Joe Jervis, and Ksen Pallegedara. After a wonderful dinner catered by The Upper Crust, attendees enjoyed both a live and silent auction and a performance by jazz great Natalie Douglas.

AFC’s commitment to support LGBT youth began in June 2002. AFC provides a safe, nurturing environment for troubled teens offering a helping hand while they put their lives back together.

Broadway-Goers or Vampire Lovers for Denis O’Hare?

Broadway Fans versus True Blood Fans

Denis O'HareHe was wildly popular as the vampire King of Mississippi on HBO‘s True Blood. Now that the season is over, Denis O’Hare is making his way back to Broadway.

In a Broadway.com article, Denis was asked to compare the fans of True Blood with those of a Broadway production. He said it’s a toss-up.

“Broadway fans have to travel here to see their shows, so they have a level of commitment that’s more than just tuning in every week.”

However, with his successful TV stints, Denis is starting to hear such screams as, ‘Oh my God! You’re the King of Mississippi!’

Denis’ Experience with True Blood Fans

Denis talked about the True Blood fan madness he encountered at Comic-Con in San Diego. While he was amazed at the attendance level of 130,000 people, it was his inter-galactic fans that surprised him – the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation.

But the question was asked about the return of Russell Edgington in Season 4 of True Blood. Although he was left buried ‘alive’ in concrete, the show’s creator, Alan Ball, doesn’t always keep characters dead and gone. Denis had this response:

“I love the show and really hope I’m back next year,” he said. “It’s a very good atmosphere.”

Guess we’ll have to wait for next season’s spoilers.

Denis Participates in the Hare and Tortoise Race

Denis O'Hare running down a street.Denis O’Hare on September 11, participated in an 8K charity race that his father started in memory of his mother who died of ovarian cancer.  The race  called the Hare and Tortoise 8K run/walk uses the donations to help educate the community about ovarian cancer and helps pay for medical testing for woman in the area.

The Race

During the race, in efforts to raise even more money, there was a silent auction. One of the items that was auctioned was a hand stitched fabric portrait of Russell Edgington which was made by Denis O’hare’s cousin Judy.  In the end, his sister ended up winning the bid of the portrait of him. True Blood Stars at Boardwalk Empire HBO Premiere

Now that Season 3 of True Blood has ended and the cast has a little time to relax before Season 4 begins shooting, they spend some time enjoying various red carpets and premieres. Recently Joe Manganiello, who plays werewolf Alcide Herveaux, and Denis O’Hare, who plays vampire king Russell Edgington, were found at the HBO Premiere of the newest and hottest show this fall: Boardwalk Empire.

Recently Joe was made a regular and will be joining the cast for Season 4, while Season 3 turned Russell from a king to sun burned and cement buried; however, the king of Mississippi isn’t dead, so maybe in the future Denis will come back to Bon Temps to stir up trouble. It’s no secret fans are desperate for Denis to take on the title of EGOT after his amazing performance in True Blood.  Regardless, both men look amazing at the premiere and it’s nice to see that in the midst of so much great opportunities that they they took a few minutes to indulge the fans with these video interviews.
