Rutina Wesley And Nelsan Ellis Attend True Blood Event In Boston

Nelsan Ellis (Lafayette) and Rutina Wesley (Tara) Boston Truebies, several in costumes and/or fangs, waited for hours on Saturday night to catch a glimpse of True Blood costars Nelsan Ellis (Lafayette Reynold) and Rutina Wesley (Tara Thornton) at a “Fangtasia” party at Kings Lounge in the Back Bay.

According to Boston Globe reporters at the event:

“it was clear they weren’t prepared for their own popularity. A shy Ellis, who plays Lafayette on the show, seemed shell shocked by the number of young people who were desperate to get pictures with him. “I don’t know how to act,’’ he said. “This is my first appearance.’’

Rutina Wesley seemed to take her new found fame more in stride, saying that she was not at all surprised by True Blood’s surge in popularity or by the spell vampires have cast over current popular culture:

“They’re romantic. There’s something mysterious about them. I think everybody partially wants to get bitten.’’

Rutina explained some of the difficulties she has gone through in bringing Tara Thornton to life in Alan Ball’s True Blood vision:

“I open up the script and there’s orgies and things going on and I’m like, ‘You want me to do what? In the freezing cold? With the contact lenses again?’ But then I figure, it’s for the theater, it’s for the cause, and you just do it and the reward comes when you see the show and say, ‘Oh my gosh, it all comes together!’ …. Tara doesn’t know if she’s coming or going – literally,” Wesley laughed. “Maryann is out of control, and it will be interesting to see if anyone can shut her down. I don’t even know for sure what’s gonna happen, but I hope someone figures it out, or Bon Temps is going down!”

The ratings for True Blood have rivaled those of HBO‘s long running hit drama The Sopranos, a fact which Rutina describes as “amazing, absolutely amazing….And such a blessing in these times.”

Fans have embraced both her and her character, both figuratively and literally.  She told Boston Herald reporters:

“They come up to me in the grocery store and say, ‘Tara, get over here and give me a hug!’ While I’m shopping for bananas!”

Both Julliard-trained actors were happy to pose for photos with local True Blood fans, signing autographs and shaking hands late into the night.

In addition to their work on HBO‘s breakout hit True Blood, fans can catch a glimpse of some of their other appearances.  Nelson Ellis is featured as David in The Soloist, now out on DVD.  Rutina Wesley will be voicing an animated character on The Cleveland Show, Seth MacFarlane’s spinoff of The Family Guy.

The evening’s True Blood event was held by cable company RCN in conjunction with other events in a lead up to RCN’s Fall Rush, which, according to RCN, are “aimed to connect with college students as they set up their television, internet and telephone service for the upcoming school year”.  In addition to two other True Blood related promotional events, RCN also cosponsored two blood drives with the American Red Cross.

Warning: The UK Has Been Bitten By True Blood

bill-sookieTrue Blood is taking a bite out of viewers one country at a time. First it was North America, pulling us in with characters we love and nonstop suspense. Does anybody else hate when the ending comes? It leaves you screaming for more. HBO and director Alan Ball seem to love leaving us each week on a cliffhanger. No doubt about it, the next Sunday we’ll be turning  on the television set to see what kind of trouble Sookie Stackhouse finds herself wrapped up in.

In July, another area of the world got their first bite. FX in Europe began airing the popular HBO series on both Friday and Sunday nights. Guardian.co.uk is one website in the UK that has been blogging each week about spoilers and reviewing the recently viewed episodes. It wasn’t that long ago when The Guardian’s Grace Dent talked about her avid watching of True Blood. Her article gives us five reasons why she can’t seem to get enough. Her first sentence “I thought I didn’t like vampire shows – but one bite of True Blood and I was hooked” hits the nail on the head for a lot of us, myself included. Let’s see what her reasons are for not being able to turn off the television set whenever True Blood is on.

1. She loves it because she’s not supposed to. Some of us can relate to her not really being  into vampires. When we think of vampires, we think of Anne Rice’s characters portrayed by Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. They are dark and mysterious, not necessarily showing a side where they could love someone or be likable themselves. Dent said the only reason she tried True Blood was because of who it was created by, Alan Ball, and his other hits, like Six Feet Under and American Beauty. It’s a good reason. You know of someone’s work and want to check out what else they’ve worked on and done as of late. Like most of us, Dent admits that after the first episode she was trying to find others to tune into the show and follow the story of Sookie Stackhouse. Even the idea that vampires are mainstreaming has embedded itself into her mind – I know that she can’t be the only one who thinks about it from time to time.

2. She loves Bon Temps, Louisiana. Really, who couldn’t love that little town? If you are a big city dweller, then you love the appeal of a smaller town where life isn’t in such a rush. There is no commuter traffic– yes, you envy the fact that it takes Sookie only a few minutes to get to work. The laid back lifestyle is something you crave – to be able to slow down and smell the roses or to stop by Merlotte’s after work would be like heaven. For all the small town folk,  Bon Temps is like home. It’s the city where everybody knows each other and looks out for one another. So when vampires begin to enter Bon Temps, you start to wonder how that would effect your little piece of the world. Don’t lie to yourself; I know you’ve done it because I have. Would your little community turn upside down if Bill Compton, Eric Northman, and all the rest filtered into your city?

3. She loves Bill and Sookie. It’s no surprise she mentioned them as the “it” couple of the series. Even all the Eric/Sookie fans must admit that there is just something cute, adorable, and lovable about Bill and Sookie’s relationship. There is chemistry both on and off the screen that anybody can see – their real-life engagement lock in the idea. Bill Compton is such a gentleman, asking if it’s okay if he calls on Sookie and being polite to everyone in town. To top that off, how he played with Arlene’s kids – that would hold a special place in any girl’s heart. Of course, their relationship isn’t all peaches and cream. The small town of Bon Temps wasn’t quick to take on the idea of “fang bangers” as well as their first interracial relationship – if that’s what you could call it. But like any relationship, Bill and Sookie have been passing each test that has been thrown their way. We’ll see if it holds true, that is if Eric Northman has anything to say about it.

bill-sookie-walk4. She loves Tara Thornton. Dent gives props to Sookie’s best friend and how she manages to stay on the right side of adorable. She’s the type of girl Dent says represents “slightly unhinged women, not taking this shit no more and not making a whole lot of sense but clearly enjoying showing it.” Grace Dent also thinks that Tara gets all the best lines in True Blood. For example, when Tara pointed out to Sam who she was–that she was the girl he’s been fucking. Don’t forget the line she gave about being married and her husband shot the last guy who bought her a CD in the nuts. I wonder if Dent’s love for Tara will continue when season two starts to play in the UK and she sees Tara get into trouble with Maryanne. Let’s hope so, for Tara Thornton’s sake.

5. She loves Merlotte’s Bar & Grill. Seriously, who doesn’t? Grace Dent even mentioned how it reminded her of Cheers and that is actually what I thought of when I first saw Merlotte’s in True Blood. You walk in, and everybody knows your name. The waitresses know your drink orders before you sit down and, of course, the bar owner is sleeping with one of his employees. Though, Dent reminds us that there are times  when strangers enter Merlotte’s.  For example,  Malcolm, Liam, and Diana walked into Merlotte’s when they stopped by to get Bill Compton’s attention. Nonetheless,  Merlotte’s is the place to be as there is always something happening. You could go looking for a burger and fries to eat, or maybe tonight is the night you want to score some V. Dent doesn’t leave  anyone out when mentioning  Merlotte’s Bar and Grill. You need a new wife, Dent says, Arlene is the waitress always needing a husband. If you need a fight, Tara is there and waiting. And of course, if you are looking for some fun in the sack, Jason Stackhouse is the man you call on when you’re at Merlotte’s.

She gives her five reasons as to why she bit into the series and finished it in a few days. Grace Dent is eagerly awaiting the start of season two. She also mentioned that if she starts rambling on about Twilight or Robert Pattinson next, then we all have permission to stake her. The same applies to me.

Rutina Wesley Interviewed by iF Magazine

6a011168371db6970c0115714e9179970b-320wiTara Thornton and the other people of Bon Temps may be getting themselves into serious trouble with Maryann, but Rutina Wesley is loving life. She talked with iF Magazine about what her character has been going through and what she likes about her job.

Rutina says that True Blood has been an actor’s dream for her. Tara is so complex and layered that she gets to play lots of different emotions. Rutina is really proud of the work she has done as Tara (and rightfully so!). She says that the cast is like a family, and credits her fellow actors with bringing out the best in her:

Adina Porter–amazing. Her and Michelle Forbes are two of the most grounded actresses that I’ve ever worked with. They always have my back…I always have to be on top of my game with both of them.”

Of Tara‘s story arc this season, Rutina thinks Tara has gotten into this position with Maryann and Eggs because she is being taken care of for the first time in her life. Even though she’s had some doubts about how genuine the whole situation is, it feels good. I just hope Tara wakes up to reality soon because I don’t like seeing her controlled by something that is so bad for her.

One thing about Tara that Rutina regrets a little bit is how scared she is of vampires. As a result, Rutina doesn’t get to work very much with some of her cast mates when they go off into their own separate worlds on vampire business.

She also talked about how uncomfortable the orgy scene was:

“That was the big one for all of us. But we’re all very professional, it’s a safe environment, and everyone really, really likes each other. But it’s hard doing that stuff with fifty people when you’re naked. But we all were there together and we all supported each other, so we made it work.”

As for Tara‘s future, everything is very uncertain because Alan Ball could take her anywhere:

“You never know what’s going to happen. They’ve strayed and they’ve done so much stuff with my character that’s different than the books.”

So that opens up a lot of exciting possibilities! But maybe not too exciting…Tara has had enough craziness this season to last her a long time. But for Rutina,

“Life is good and True Blood, it hurts so good…I’m just happy to be a part of a wonderful show that people are receiving in a beautiful way.”

Can True Blood’s Vampires Love?

HBO Producer Alan Ball has taken the ageless question of love flourishing between different ethnicities or cultures to a wider stance as he closes the second season on his award winning series “True Blood.” Each week millions of fans explore love and humanity trying to flourish between species or, to be more exact, between humans and the un-dead. After her first close encounter with a vampire, Tara Thonton, played by Rutina Wesley, looks thoughtfully out a window and asks,“ Do you think they are capable of loving a person?” bill1

Alan Ball has challenged fans with what may be the central core of the show, an important dilemma in the search for our souls. How much morality and humanity is needed for love to flourish?  Must some seed of morality and humanity be planted or can one will themself to evolve into new dimensions? The AVL (American Vampire League) advertises, “Vampires were people too.” A handsome and remorseful Bill Compton insists, “I am not human” yet professes his undying love for Sookie Stackhouse. Conflicting messages given throughout HBO’s “True Blood” leave me wondering, “Are vampires susceptible to and capable of human emotions? Can their morality evolve toward the humane? Or, like their physical appearance are they doomed to the limits of their emotions as they were when turned?

True Blood’s three sexiest and intriguing male vampires, Bill Compton, Eric Northman, and Area 9 Sheriff, Godric (Godfrey), give us mixed views.

Bill Compton, dark and brooding, played by Stephen Moyer was turned a hundred and forty years ago. He is merely a teenager in the immortal life span of a vampire. In Bill’s thirty human years, he was an honorable family man. His high moral character, religious beliefs, and patriotic duty led him to a military position. Having survived the horrors of the civil war, his family reunion is tragically destroyed by Lorena, an old vampire who is immediately drawn to Bill’s morality and sensitivity. Lorena, although intrigued by Bill’s humanity, leads him into decades of death and destruction by feeding off the lives of humans. It may have taken years for Bill’s remorse to will out his blood thirst, but ultimately, his suppressed morality wins and he becomes the repentant and loving creature that has captured not only the heart of True Blood’s favorite waitress and telepath, but millions of fans throughout the world.

Our sexy controlling vamp, Eric Northman is played by the long, lean 6’4” Swedish import, Alexander Skarsgard. Eric, a former viking, was born in 1047. Most Vikings of that era did not live past 40 years old, thus it was common for men before they were  20 years old to marry brides as young as 12.  If we are to apply the common life of Vikings in the 11th century, we can assume Eric chose the life of a soldier and left his family at a young age. Given that vikings were well known as sailors, he would have traveled to many parts of the world. Our speculation is strengthened by the scene of Eric being turned in 1077 at the age of 31. Fresh from a viscous battle, fellow soldiers try to comfort a gravely wounded Eric, who makes the comment “wherever I am, there will always be women.” Now, we have the vision of a sailor with a girl in every port. Our conclusion is drawn that Eric was what we would refer to in today’s world as a “player” Not to suggest that he was of low moral character, but more to the idea that, although Eric had many women and sexual encounters, there was never love.  With a thousand year afterlife under his belt, Eric dresses, talks, and has the strut that he is undeniably a “player” with no outward display of regret.

Danish heartthrob, Allan Hyde plays Godric, sheriff of Area 9, and the newest vampire on the scene.  Having been turned early in his human life, he still has the look of a teenager. Godric, however, is well over two thousand years old. He is the oldest vampire in North America. With an afterlife so lengthy, he implies that the thirty three years of Jesus’ life is a mere moment to him. True Blood’s creator has left much of Godric’s past open to speculation. We can infer by his Ancient Roman tattoos, he may have been a gladiator or soldier. Both of which would have started training as early as 14 years old. Strong in his conviction, absolute in his authority, Godric fans have little problem with this conclusion.

Our first image of Godric is at the turning of Eric Northman. Unlike Lorena’s savage and unwilling turning of BillEric’s turning is kinder, with a promise of love, companionship, and family. After brutally killing Eric’s companions, Godric gives a near death Eric, the choice of an afterlife.  Godric must surely have fulfilled his promises, seeing the respect and loyalty Eric, after a thousand years, still shows for his maker. We know of only one instance, but being vampire and having survived over two thousand years, we can only assume Godric has had many moments of savagery and taken his share of lives.

We find Godric as a willing hostage to the Fellowship of the Sun Church. He is fully aware that he is to “meet the sun” and his ultimate destruction. Why is he so willing to end it all? Is it that he has evolved into humanity, or was the morality always inside him, thus gradually making him remorseful for the lives he has taken? At what point did the remorse begin? How many, decades as with Bill, or centuries did it take for Godric’s evolution to humanity? Having freed the human traitor, Hugo, and showing respect for his lieutenant, Isabel‘s feelings, we clearly see that he not only recognizes, but also understands the concept of love. Actions, which have endeared Godric to his own legions of faithful fans.

Now battle lines have been drawn,  Sookie & Bill vs. Eric. Millions have seen the interest Eric has shown in the telepathic barmaid. Is it just her special abilities Eric wants? Many would argue that there is something there. Bill sees it, and even Eric may admit, there is something…. But what? Eric admits he does not understand the concept of love.  As a player, does Eric see Sookie as just another of his many conquests? Conquering Sookie would certainly put the hierarchy of sheriff planted firmly in Bill’s mind. Is Eric’s toying with Sookie a game, pure entertainment, or is it rooted in an unknown emotion? Eric takes pleasure in teasing Bill‘s “love” for Sookie. Is Eric’s taunting simply to hide the fact that Eric himself has been bitten. A feeling with which he clearly, is not accustomed.

What is behind Eric’s desire for Sookie? Many fans would cheer for Eric to realize he love’s Sookie. But, is it possible? Can a thousand year old vampire who has never understood love, evolve to enough humanity and morality to accept the concept?  Does Eric secretly thirst for the ability to love?  Can he will the evolution of his feelings? Must the seeds have been planted before he was turned? If the latter is the case, Eric’s dalliances with Sookie will be looked upon as pure physical lust and sport, thus, crystallizing his bad boy persona.

Many of Eric’s fans will vote for the evolution of his humanity.  This evolution will, however, bring a new set of problems. Will he know how to act and react with his new found feelings? His 31 human years and thousand year after-life may not provide him with enough emotional experience to carry an adult relationship. Has Eric‘s recent flirtation the resemblance of pulling a little girl’s pigtails so she has to look at you? Is it too late for Eric? He may find that his new feelings will bring him more anguish than happiness.

Do we have enough facts to solve our dilemma? Bill knew love, knew what it was to lose his humanity. He fought very hard to get it back and find love again.  Eric, we can determine, although he may have had some sense of morality, true love most probably had always been a foreign concept to him. We only have hints of Godric’s level of morality before he was turned. We can, however, see that he now has a clear understanding of morality, humanity, and love.

Unfortunately, we have no concrete answers. After all, humanity, morality, and love are the most complex of human issues. Maybe that’s why Vampires prefer the unemotional lifestyle. We will have to wait and see what Alan Ball has in store for Eric and his Fans.

Rutina Wesley Dishes Out A Helping Of Spoilers

rutina-wesley-4Rutina Wesley recently spoke with the New York Posts’s “Pop Wrap” about her character, Tara Thornton, on the HBO hit show True Blood. While the vampires are all focused on action in Shreveport and Dallas, things in Bon Temps are heating up for Tara. Stuck in the web that has been woven by Maryann, Tara has some real fighting to do.

Happily, Rutina says that the Hunter’s souffle prepared by Mayann actually contained no heart, only tomatoes, other vegetables and meat (I’ll admit I was totally grossed out during that scene). Rutina goes on to compliment her love interest Mechad Brooks (who plays Eggs). She says she has lost count of his ab muscles and jokes that the producers were serious when they told her they’d found the perfect match for her character.

When Pop Wrap asked her why she thought the show’s ratings improve with each episode, Rutina answered:

Rutina: People have latched on to the show in a very amazing way and I think it’s because this season, the story grabs you right away. If you blink, you’re going to miss a lot. Plus, we all have our own storylines this year and it’s much more interesting when you’ve got, like, 25 character floating around. Plus, Anna [Paquin], Ryan [Kwanten], Stephen [Moyer] and I are so into our roles now, we found our beat with these people, so we’re a lot more comfortable.

She notes that the black contacts everyone wears during the orgy scenes were uncomfortable at first, but much better now. She acknowledged the whole crew had a pep talk before filming the orgy scene(s).

We had a big talk about respecting each other because there were about 50 naked people on the set. It’s a very vulnerable situation, so there was no other option than for us to come together. Granted it was freezing when we shot those scenes, because it was like 4 a.m., which made it harder because there’s no shivering in Louisiana!

Rutina also lets us in on a few spoilers for the rest of this season! Ready for some revelations?

  • Maryann’s chaos is only just beginning – there is much more to her character
  • This week’s episode is where the violence begins
  • The season ends with an even bigger cliffhanger than last season (OH MY GOSH I am on edge about that!!)
  • Tara loses more of herself to Maryann

WOW!!! I can’t wait to see where this is all going – can you? I think Rutina does an amazing job of playing Tara. She’s sharp-tongued, has a wicked sense of humor, and out of Maryann’s clutches she is quite self assured (as long as she isn’t dealing with Lettie Mae).  I’m bracing myself for an explosive season from here on out!!

The Unsung Hero of Bon Temps: Sam Merlotte

sam-trammell-samHe’s always around when they need him. He stays quietly in the background, watching for any signs of danger when he isn’t needed. Who is he? Bon Temp‘s unsung hero, Sam Merlotte, played by Sam Trammell. Loveable, affable, and sometimes hateable, he’s a steady reliable, and predictable presence in Bon Temps.

He says to the Sudbury Star:

“Yeah, I have thought about that,” Trammell said. “I understand what you mean about my character.

“I’m the bedrock of town.”

He truly is! Sam, aka Dean – his shapeshifter alter ego, is Johnny-on-the-spot when he’s needed. He is always ready with his baseball bat and a menacing glare. Sam runs Merlotte’s bar, the only hot spot in Bon Temps. Sookie, Arlene, and Tara work at the bar where all the locals are frequent visitors. Lafayette provides comic relief to Terry’s unbalance in the kitchen, and Sam effortlessly manages them all.

Where Sookie is concerned, he may be a bit overprotective. He’s not the biggest fan of vampires. Especially the ones that he thinks are endangering Sookie, who he has a thing for. Despite that crush on Sookie he has managed to push it aside long enough to have a go at a relationship with Tara. It  definitely did not end well.

Sam is also perpetually in trouble for things he didn’t do. Last season it was the deaths of several women, this season it is the death of Daphne, who was found in his walk-in freezer. We all know that Eggs gutted her, under Maryann’s influence – but why would the not-so-bright Sheriff Dearborne believe that? And poor Sam – he really adored her. Her thought they had something good going on, what with her shifter ability and all.

Sam brings all of his emotions to the table in True Blood. He was a great casting choice by the show’s creators. I hope we continue to see more of him, and his role is really fleshed out this season or next!

True Blood Season 2 Spoiler: A Glance At Episode 9

sookie-bill-true-blood-tv-couples-2922922-338-400True Blood‘s Episode 9, titled “I Will Rise Up“, is full of surprising twists and turns. The episode begins immediately after Luke‘s detonation of an explosive device while time strapped with silver. You have to love a show that always picks up right where it leaves off!

Apparently Allan Hyde’s character Godric plays a very important role in this episode. Hopefully we will see him really push Godric to his limits and become a larger presence on the scene. Televisionaryblog.com says this of the upcoming episode:

So what is “I Will Rise Up” about then? For one, it’s about the notion of forgiveness, both in terms of the divine and the mundane. None of the characters on the series have been saints (it’s rather hard to do so in a series overflowing with blood-thirsty vampires) but there are several scenes that speak to the redemptive power of compassion and grace.

We should expect to see many secrets revealed – secrets that rock relationships to their core. The dynamics of the show, and more than a few relationships, will undoubtedly be forever altered. Alliances not seen before will emerge, family bonds will be affected, and friendships will end.

normal_ericnorthman__001_hboAnd what of Sookie and Eric’s newly strengthened bond? We all know by now that Eric on the surface is never what Eric on the inside is – he maneuvers situations to play out the way he wants them to be. So don’t be surprised if he toys with Sookie a bit. Sookie is nothing if not sometimes blind to the wiles of the mysterious sheriff.

Where do Hoyt and Jessica stand? We know Maxine, Hoyt’s overprotective mother, would never approve of her precious baby boy dating a vampire. Hoyt may just decide to take a stand on this one – he seems to really love Jessica. The two of them together is one of the sweetest relationships on the show. Both are shy, unsure of how to be in a relationship, and nervous about how to be with one another. Both play their characters extraordinarily well.

In the world not exactly related to vampires, Lafayette and Lettie Mae join forces to overcome Maryann’s hold on Tara. Strange alliance there, but nice to see the family coming together for the good of a woman they both love.

I Will Rise Up” promises to be a game changer this season. Expect twists and turns, major shifts in characters, maybe a few surprising deaths, and an appearance by squeaky clean Nan Flanagan. Exciting, yes?

True Blood Season 2: EW Recap of Episode 4

true_blood_season_2_episode_4Alright, we waited two weeks for “Shake and Fingerpop.” Ken Tucker from EW gives us his True Blood season 2 episode 4 recap after last week expressing his annoyance at the mini-marathon instead of a new episode.  Ken starts his recap by examining Bill‘s and Sookie‘s roles as surrogate parents to (as Ken refers to her) “the delightfully bratty Jessica.” [Author’s comment: my take on Jessica (played by Deborah Ann Woll) is that she rocks at playing the part of a hormonal teen vampire. Watching Bill pop out of the coffin to save Sookie, then Jessica screaming, “How the hell do I get out of this thing?” as her coffin bounced around on the ground while she tried to get out was hysterical.

Ken talks about the relationship of Bill and Sookie taking on new dimensions:

It displayed a new side of the Sookie-Bill relationship, showing that they’re not just lovers making goo-goo eyes at each other — they can see each other’s strengths and flaws. Sookie may be a tough country gal, but she’s still naive about the nature of both evil and adolescence, and thus prone to being too permissive. (And, really, is there much difference between a teenager and a leeching vampire?) “Two travel coffins instead of one,” sighed Bill, ordering an additional for Jessica even as he knew knowing nothing good can come of this.”

We all know plenty of good fun can come out of this and it did. Bill showing Jessica how to glamor Sookie’s would-be abductor was a great scene. Sookie‘s look radiated her emotions, seeming to say, What a great dad he is. Sadly, I must admit, even as an adult I would have played with this man’s mind in the some way or another. Who knows what I would have made him do in public, but I would have had fun with it.

Alright now as Ken puts it here a SPOILER on who was behind the foiled kidnapping.

“A pivotal connection was made in this episode, as we found out that the people behind the attack on Sookie upon arrival in Dallas (with the limo driver played by Dean Norris, who’s so good in Breaking Bad), are the Soldiers of the Sun, the elite group of anti-vampire fanatics headed up by Rev. Steve Newlin and whose newest recruit is our dear sap Jason Stackhouse.

In all the spoilers that I had read concerning the “Eric and Lafayette” scene, it was discussed as being homoerotic.  The scene was anything but erotic.  If anything, Eric looks bored while Lafayette is drinking his blood and mildly bemused by Lafayette‘s dancing but not interested enough to even stick around.  Lafayette dancing around was hysterical, but NOT homoerotic!

Then of course Ken points out the hysterical debate between Jason and a few of Fellowship Of The Sun worshipers on the first vampire:

The debate among the Fellowship of the Sun stooges about who was the original vampire, Jesus, Lazarus, or Cain, was priceless”
Then of course Jason’s final words on the derivative of the word Evil and its meaning “explain Europe.” I couldn’t tell if they were confused or actually thinking hmmmm he’s right.

Rutina Wesley Daemons TV Interview

rutina_wesley-333x500Daemonstv.com has a great interview with Rutina Wesley where she discusses her acting background, her character as Tara Thornton and much more.  The interview is gives a little more background on Rutina and what’s going on with Tara for True Blood Season2.

Some of the interview below

Can you talk a bit then how Tara evolves throughout the season?

Rutina Wesley: Like I said, we’re going to see Tara getting taken care of. There’s going to be some romance and then there’s chaos of course, but without giving too much away I do think that just generally it’ll be a softer side of Tara that we’ll see this season. I mean, her edge is still there, but she’s not as edgy as she was last season. She’s definitely a lot more vulnerable and I think it’s very beautiful to see a Black character on TV that the writers have given so many levels to and so much complexity. She’s not just the angry woman. She’s got so much more to her and that’s why I enjoy and love playing her.

Who’s your favorite character, apart from Tara?

Rutina Wesley: Oh, everyone. I’m being totally honest here. It’s really hard to have a favorite because especially this season the creative team has given everyone something so meaty and juicy to work on and everyone is playing it so well. I think that all of us have been cast right on and so everyone is playing their part brilliantly and there’s no one person that I lean more towards. I mean, I love Nelsan Ellis. We went to school together. I’ve always loved him, since we were in school. I enjoy working with Anna Paquin and Adina Porter who plays my mother and of course Michelle Forbes who is amazingly…her and Adina are two of the most amazingly grounded women and actresses that I’ve worked with in my life. They’re just there. I’ve learned so much from working with them. It’s been a real treat.

True Blood Season 2 Spoiler: What’s Going to Happen to Lafayette Next?

SPOILER ALERT!  DO NOT READ IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO KNOW WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN TO LAFAYETTE AS NELSAN ELLIS TELLS TV GUIDE!  I’M SERIOUS DO NOT READ IF YOU REALLY DO NOT WANT TO KNOW!! OK YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!

lafayette-reynold-nelsan-ellis

As we saw in the first episode of season 2 of Alan Ball‘s hit HBO TV series True Blood, Lafayette (Nelsan Ellis) is not dead and is in fact in a dungeon as Eric Northman‘s (Alexander Skarsgard) prisoner.  Did Nelsan know that he would survive into the second season?  Apparently Nelsan was as much in the dark as everyone else regarding the fate of the flamboyant short-order cook of Merlotte‘s. Nelsan had read Charlaine Harris’ Sookie Stackhouse novels and knew the fate of his character therefore when it came time to do the reading for the finale episode for season 1 he was prepared for the end. “I thought, this was fun, time to look for the next gig,” he says. It came as a complete surprise when he found out that it was not him in car.

“‘You know we’re not going to kill you, right?'” Ellis remembers Ball telling him. “And I was like, ‘Noooo…'” Ball told the actor that he decided to keep Lafayette in the cast after shooting a scene between Ellis and Rutina Wesley, who plays Lafayette‘s cousin, Tara, in the pilot episode. Ellis and Wesley have combustive chemistry for sure, which Ellis attributes to their long friendship.

So what does Alan Ball have in store for Lafayette?  Well it seems that Lafayette will become inextricably connected with the vampires but it seems that it will not always be adversarial.

“[Lafayette] stays with the vampires basically throughout the season,” he says. “I guess how deep down the rabbit hole he goes with Eric is the biggest teaser I can give.”Eric makes people beholden to him,” says Ellis. “He did it to Sookie, and now he does force Lafayette to work for him to repay him for something he’s done for him.”

So the big question:  is Lafayette going to be turned?  According to Lafayette not anytime soon.

“I have a sneaking suspicion that, in the future, the vampires are going to learn to respect him and not mess with him,” he says. “He’s going to find a way to elevate his position with them. Lafayette is a survivor, so he’s not going to stay in this scared state too long.”
