Deborah Ann Woll Shares the Story Behind her Red Hair

normal_true-blooddotnet_season2_029You know that scene in “Scratches” where Jessica walks into Merlotte‘s and lights up the room–and especially Hoyt–with her beauty? Turns out, that reaction is somewhat intentional on Deborah Ann Woll‘s part.

In an interview with ELLE magazine, Deborah talked about dying her hair since high school. A natural blonde, she chose to be a redhead so that she would stand out:

“As a fair skinned blonde, I disappeared into the background. I’ve always been a loner, so I suppose dyeing my hair red was a way to say, ‘I’m here, I exist, I’m a human being and you can’t just push me aside.’ “

Another inspiration for her red hair was watching old movies. She was a fan of actresses like Rita Hayworth, and says that she “always fancied someone might call me ‘Red,’ like Katherine Hepburn.”

Even with her newfound celebrity status, Deborah never goes to a professional salon to have her hair done. She confesses to not being much of a “glamour girl,” but mainly she is happy with how her $9 box of color has been working for her. (L’Oreal Paris Excellence Creme in Reddish Blond, in case you’re curious.)

Jessica may be an impulsive, hormonal baby vamp, but Deborah comes across as being a very sweet, down-to-earth young woman, even when she’s just talking about style tips!

Can True Blood’s Vampires Love?

HBO Producer Alan Ball has taken the ageless question of love flourishing between different ethnicities or cultures to a wider stance as he closes the second season on his award winning series “True Blood.” Each week millions of fans explore love and humanity trying to flourish between species or, to be more exact, between humans and the un-dead. After her first close encounter with a vampire, Tara Thonton, played by Rutina Wesley, looks thoughtfully out a window and asks,“ Do you think they are capable of loving a person?” bill1

Alan Ball has challenged fans with what may be the central core of the show, an important dilemma in the search for our souls. How much morality and humanity is needed for love to flourish?  Must some seed of morality and humanity be planted or can one will themself to evolve into new dimensions? The AVL (American Vampire League) advertises, “Vampires were people too.” A handsome and remorseful Bill Compton insists, “I am not human” yet professes his undying love for Sookie Stackhouse. Conflicting messages given throughout HBO’s “True Blood” leave me wondering, “Are vampires susceptible to and capable of human emotions? Can their morality evolve toward the humane? Or, like their physical appearance are they doomed to the limits of their emotions as they were when turned?

True Blood’s three sexiest and intriguing male vampires, Bill Compton, Eric Northman, and Area 9 Sheriff, Godric (Godfrey), give us mixed views.

Bill Compton, dark and brooding, played by Stephen Moyer was turned a hundred and forty years ago. He is merely a teenager in the immortal life span of a vampire. In Bill’s thirty human years, he was an honorable family man. His high moral character, religious beliefs, and patriotic duty led him to a military position. Having survived the horrors of the civil war, his family reunion is tragically destroyed by Lorena, an old vampire who is immediately drawn to Bill’s morality and sensitivity. Lorena, although intrigued by Bill’s humanity, leads him into decades of death and destruction by feeding off the lives of humans. It may have taken years for Bill’s remorse to will out his blood thirst, but ultimately, his suppressed morality wins and he becomes the repentant and loving creature that has captured not only the heart of True Blood’s favorite waitress and telepath, but millions of fans throughout the world.

Our sexy controlling vamp, Eric Northman is played by the long, lean 6’4” Swedish import, Alexander Skarsgard. Eric, a former viking, was born in 1047. Most Vikings of that era did not live past 40 years old, thus it was common for men before they were  20 years old to marry brides as young as 12.  If we are to apply the common life of Vikings in the 11th century, we can assume Eric chose the life of a soldier and left his family at a young age. Given that vikings were well known as sailors, he would have traveled to many parts of the world. Our speculation is strengthened by the scene of Eric being turned in 1077 at the age of 31. Fresh from a viscous battle, fellow soldiers try to comfort a gravely wounded Eric, who makes the comment “wherever I am, there will always be women.” Now, we have the vision of a sailor with a girl in every port. Our conclusion is drawn that Eric was what we would refer to in today’s world as a “player” Not to suggest that he was of low moral character, but more to the idea that, although Eric had many women and sexual encounters, there was never love.  With a thousand year afterlife under his belt, Eric dresses, talks, and has the strut that he is undeniably a “player” with no outward display of regret.

Danish heartthrob, Allan Hyde plays Godric, sheriff of Area 9, and the newest vampire on the scene.  Having been turned early in his human life, he still has the look of a teenager. Godric, however, is well over two thousand years old. He is the oldest vampire in North America. With an afterlife so lengthy, he implies that the thirty three years of Jesus’ life is a mere moment to him. True Blood’s creator has left much of Godric’s past open to speculation. We can infer by his Ancient Roman tattoos, he may have been a gladiator or soldier. Both of which would have started training as early as 14 years old. Strong in his conviction, absolute in his authority, Godric fans have little problem with this conclusion.

Our first image of Godric is at the turning of Eric Northman. Unlike Lorena’s savage and unwilling turning of BillEric’s turning is kinder, with a promise of love, companionship, and family. After brutally killing Eric’s companions, Godric gives a near death Eric, the choice of an afterlife.  Godric must surely have fulfilled his promises, seeing the respect and loyalty Eric, after a thousand years, still shows for his maker. We know of only one instance, but being vampire and having survived over two thousand years, we can only assume Godric has had many moments of savagery and taken his share of lives.

We find Godric as a willing hostage to the Fellowship of the Sun Church. He is fully aware that he is to “meet the sun” and his ultimate destruction. Why is he so willing to end it all? Is it that he has evolved into humanity, or was the morality always inside him, thus gradually making him remorseful for the lives he has taken? At what point did the remorse begin? How many, decades as with Bill, or centuries did it take for Godric’s evolution to humanity? Having freed the human traitor, Hugo, and showing respect for his lieutenant, Isabel‘s feelings, we clearly see that he not only recognizes, but also understands the concept of love. Actions, which have endeared Godric to his own legions of faithful fans.

Now battle lines have been drawn,  Sookie & Bill vs. Eric. Millions have seen the interest Eric has shown in the telepathic barmaid. Is it just her special abilities Eric wants? Many would argue that there is something there. Bill sees it, and even Eric may admit, there is something…. But what? Eric admits he does not understand the concept of love.  As a player, does Eric see Sookie as just another of his many conquests? Conquering Sookie would certainly put the hierarchy of sheriff planted firmly in Bill’s mind. Is Eric’s toying with Sookie a game, pure entertainment, or is it rooted in an unknown emotion? Eric takes pleasure in teasing Bill‘s “love” for Sookie. Is Eric’s taunting simply to hide the fact that Eric himself has been bitten. A feeling with which he clearly, is not accustomed.

What is behind Eric’s desire for Sookie? Many fans would cheer for Eric to realize he love’s Sookie. But, is it possible? Can a thousand year old vampire who has never understood love, evolve to enough humanity and morality to accept the concept?  Does Eric secretly thirst for the ability to love?  Can he will the evolution of his feelings? Must the seeds have been planted before he was turned? If the latter is the case, Eric’s dalliances with Sookie will be looked upon as pure physical lust and sport, thus, crystallizing his bad boy persona.

Many of Eric’s fans will vote for the evolution of his humanity.  This evolution will, however, bring a new set of problems. Will he know how to act and react with his new found feelings? His 31 human years and thousand year after-life may not provide him with enough emotional experience to carry an adult relationship. Has Eric‘s recent flirtation the resemblance of pulling a little girl’s pigtails so she has to look at you? Is it too late for Eric? He may find that his new feelings will bring him more anguish than happiness.

Do we have enough facts to solve our dilemma? Bill knew love, knew what it was to lose his humanity. He fought very hard to get it back and find love again.  Eric, we can determine, although he may have had some sense of morality, true love most probably had always been a foreign concept to him. We only have hints of Godric’s level of morality before he was turned. We can, however, see that he now has a clear understanding of morality, humanity, and love.

Unfortunately, we have no concrete answers. After all, humanity, morality, and love are the most complex of human issues. Maybe that’s why Vampires prefer the unemotional lifestyle. We will have to wait and see what Alan Ball has in store for Eric and his Fans.

True Blood’s Alexander Skarsgard IESB Season 2 Interview

True Blood's Alexander SkarsgardAlexander Skarsgard, who play’s Eric Northman on HBO’s hit show True Blood, is perhaps one of the most mysterious, respected and, at time’s, one of the most eerily, frightening vampires of Bon Temps, Louisiana. Alexander referred to himself as a “glorified extra” in Season 1, but as we all know he had a commanding presence on screen that exuded both confidence and arrogance, yet was undeniably likable in the series. In the following interview Alexander talks about his more in depth role as Eric in Season 2 and how the viewers will slowly learn more about Eric as the season progresses. He goes on to explain that Dallas is a personal journey for his character and what may be at stake, which is life and death for him, and brings a whole new Eric that we have yet to see previously and are eagerly anticipating.

Alexander is grateful that the fans are able to see him more in depth in Season 2 of True Blood. As he described, after Season 1, many fans would approach him and refer to him as the ‘evil vampire‘ and he felt the need to continually defend Eric because as he explains, and many who may have read the books understand, there is so much more than meets the eye than the bad boy vampire that we were introduced to in Season 1.

Alex says:

“In Season 1, Eric was the entrepreneur, doing his thing, and walking around and being the bad-ass vampire. In Season 2, you’ll hopefully understand him a little bit better and see more than just the evil vampire that people sometimes think he is”.

With the new season unfolding, and with a possible love triangle developing between his character,  Sookie (Anna Paquin) and Bill (Stephen Moyer), Alexander says it is a pleasure working with such a wonderful cast. He also says he is ecstatic to get up each morning and go to work because the crew of writers are phenomenal and Alan Ball is a genius. Alexander goes on to explain Eric’s attraction to Sookie Stackhouse. He explains that Eric has been around for a thousand years and after all this time is quite jaded with humanity unlike Bill Compton. Eric realizes there is something quite intriguing about Sookie, yet cannot put his finger on it and wants to pursue that avenue.

Alexander feels that our society is definitely intrigued by vampires because they stand the test of time, they are always there and symbolize consistency in an ever-changing world, thus the fascination. He believes True Blood has great drama because sex and violence always attracts the audience, which all vampires epitomize.

On a lighter, and bit funnier, note, Alex goes on to describe how it felt to talk with fangs in the beginning and that he had his own malfunction with them. He assures us it took time, patience and practice to perfect those scenes!

When asked if there were any of Eric’s characteristic’s he wishes he had he stated:

‘Yeah all of them. As an actor, I believe the character has to be born with you, and come from within you. It has to be that organic. As human beings, we have all those characteristics within us. I don’t believe in good people and bad people. I think we are a combination of both’.

In addition to being on HBO’s hit show True Blood, some fans may recognize him as Brad Colbert from HBO’s mini-series, Generation Kill. He also starred in Lady Gaga’s music video “Paparazzi”. When asked what the experience was like, he simply said the director, Jonas Akerlund, was a good friend of his and he thought the video was something fun to do, so he did it. Born and raised in Sweden, Alexander Skarsgard’s base is now here in the United States, but says he will always consider Stockholm, Sweden is home, since that is where his family and friends reside. He will be returning to Sweden for a week this month to complete a movie he began last year and hopes he will be able to do American and Swedish projects as well. Alex is hoping to jump from one character to another while on hiatus from True Blood to keep him on his toes. He finds different roles trigger his creativity and he constantly likes to be challenged from one project to another. Later this month, he begins shooting the re-make of Straw Dogs, with James Marsden and Kate Bosworth, that will be released in 2010.

I have a feeling Alexander Skarsgard will soon be, if he isn’t yet, a household name, not only for his captivating portrayal as Eric Northman on HBO’s True Blood but for his former work in his home country of Sweden and for his upcoming projects both here in America and in his homeland of Sweden. You can see Alexander and the rest of the cast of Alan Ball’s hit show, True Blood every Sunday night at 9PM on HBO.

Hollywood Jane On Why Vampires Suck!

vampires

And what a rant Ms. Jane went on to let us know how unhappy she was with the modern as she refers to it, “neutered” vampire.  Obviously, I am going to disagree.

I don’t have a degree in vampires 101, but I have been a “fanpire” and horror fan since I was a kid.  I grew up on the early vampire classic’s in TV and books.  I went from reading Nancy Drew  to  Stephen King’s  “Salem’s Lot”.  I even ran home from school to watch the original “Dark Shadows”. Yes some of the vampires in recent history have been tamed a bit to capture a younger audience (not every mom is like mine and hands her kid Salem’s Lot to read). I “sucked up” (yes, I know, couldn’t resist) every moment of that book.

To quote “Hollywood Jane”and who she blames:
“ I blame Anne Rice.  Never mind that I’ve never read any of her books, and my knowledge of her basically stops after, “wrote about vampires, found religion, wrote about Jesus.” She started it, this whole vampire craze. I used to be a fan, but enough is enough. Sure, vampires have been popular fodder for ages, but once you slap a pair of fangs on Brad Pitt, you can kiss the scary bit goodbye.”

Ms. Jane writes about what she calls “the vampire standards”.  “There used to be rules. No sun, no garlic, a stake to the heart and kaput. Burnings were good, as were decapitations (both methods derived from the habits of Vlad III of Wallachia), and you were safe so long as God was your co-pilot. Vampires were evil, blood-sucking fiends from places like Romania, they owned castles and could turn into bats. They lived in shadows. They had style, but not necessarily sex appeal”

Vampires have always had an allure and sex appeal although we may not have  admitted it to ourselves.  It is not a coincidence that a majority of vampire fans are women. Who would not want to be courted by an elite, overpowering, eternal lover? The allure of vampires in the 19th and early 20th centuries was the covert permission they granted women to have a sexual relationship without blame to themselves. The victim was mezmerized or glamoured and then attacked, clearly not in control of herself even if she later sought the vampire on her own. Other than in the earliest, most ancient folklore, when vampires were based on Vlad the Impaler, a man who chopped off heads and stuck them on pikes and burned people alive in their homes, vampires were always seductive beings. How else can they feed easily without hunting like werewolves? I don’t remember any vampires being described as overweight and unattractive. Do You?

There have been ugly screen vampires, Nosferatu prime among them. As for monstrous in behavior, it always existed even in Anne Rice vampire novels. Was Claudia “fixed”? She used her childlike nature to lure in her meals.  Lestat was selfish, vein and menacing.  If you read most vampire novels and follow movies both old and new, vampires still had attachments to their human selves.

I do not love every portrayal of vampires, but we must remember they are mythological creatures created in folk lore. Therefore they can be changed with the creative view of the author inventing the world that surrounds them. Dear Ms. Jane, STOP BEING SUCH A CYNIC!!

Who Is The Fangtastic Five?

true-blood-2-2-eric-and-bill

And where do our favorite Sexy True Blood vampires fit in?  Sorry fanpires you are going to have to watch the video to find out.
Now we all know True Blood’s two leading vampires Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer) and Eric Northman (Alexander Skarsgard) have brought back sexy on and off the screen.

Since this an all time list (which you need to keep in mind before you have a fit.)  The video gives us a brief view of vampires on the big and small screen.

Personally in recent memory except for Nosferatu and the vampires from “Thirty Days of Night” (I’m sure their is more so be nice when reminding me.)  I found most vampires to be sexy, seductive and misunderstood.   If you remember most of the old movies there was always some long lost love that the female character resembled which made the vampire obsessed and needy of her love.
Alex Fox of Bizarre Magazine gives us her rundown of her “fangtastic five” in her short video interview on ITN Extreme.  Let us know your comments below if you think she has the “Top 5″ correct!

True Blood has New Zealanders Prepared To Stake Vampires

True Blood has New Zealanders prepared to stake vampires just in case they have an encounter with one that wants to take a bite out of them. Of course we are referring to the media ad campaign that was launched in New Zealand prior to the premiere of Alan Ball‘s hit HBO TV series True Blood. True Blood premieres on New Zealand’s Prime channel on Wednesday, March 18, 2009 at 9:300 pm and as a way to build up the suspense and mystery surrounding the show the media department developed this ad campaign. Billboard-size walls were erected with a picture depicting a vampire and a hand driving a stake into the heart of a vampire with the words “In case of vampire” and wooden stakes attached with instructions to “snap here ” to use. A very ingenious marketing campaign that is and sure to create a buzz around True Blood. Click the photos to enlarge and enjoy them. We would also like to thank the individual who goes by the name of antony8627 who posted these on Flickr.
