Denis O’Hare Says It’s Good To Be King

Fancast.com had a few questions for the vampire king of MississippiTrue Blood‘s King Russell Edgington, played wonderfully by Denis O’Hare, is causing a great deal of angst this season for Bill and Sookie fans.

When asked about the king’s intended plans for the vampire blood addicted werewolves in his employ, Denis said that all his plans have to be revised due to certain events occurring in episodes 7 and 8.  “Things start to go really crazy.”

Now we’re intrigued.  What about more somewhat disturbing scenes such as the eating frenzy of the stripper in the king’s limo?  All Denis would share is that Russell is in bed with someone in episode 10 when stuff happens.  He would not say what things, nor would he admit to his bed partner being male, female, human, vampire or werewolf.

Of course playing with wolves has been one of Denis‘ more fun experiences on the show.  He said working with real wolves is incredible.

“I got to meet one young wolf and actually sit down and pet him before he knocked me over on my ass.  They’re fantastic animals.”

Stating that it is, indeed, good to be king, Denis admitted that Russell can do whatever he wants – order people around, eat who he wants.  “It’s fantastic.”  And yes, the show should move from Bon Temps to Jackson, where there are better restaurants and large plantation houses.

Asked if he was rooting for Bill or Alcide, with regard to Sookie, Denis put it simply.  “I’m on Team Russell.  My team.”

Bon Temps Tattler: Wedding Announcements Pelt-Coot

Confessions of a Biker Bride” by Debbie P.

Guess what, Ya’ll?? I’m gettin’ hitched to Coot– the baddest, strongest, meanest biker in town. Ain’t ya jealous?? I know summa ya’ll heard that I was gonna marry that Alcide Herveaux, but that ain’t true no more. He and I just don’t see eye to eye on things and he ain’t the kinda man I want, BUT that don’t mean that ya’ll sleazy skanks can have him neither cuz you might think that you’re woman enough for him, but ya ain’t. It’s gonna take him a LONG TIME to get over the likes of me so BACK THE FREAK OFF BITCHES….especially you, Sookie Stackhouse! Stick to what you know best….datin’ dead things. But wait, your dead thing don’t want you no more, does he? Hmm, pity….NOT!

Anyways, back to me and Coot. Yup, we’re gettin’ married soon and it ain’t gonna be no traditional type weddin’ neither. That’s one thing I ain’t gonna miss about marryin’ Alcide. He wanted the big ole church weddin’ with me in a fru-fru white dress and a guest list a mile long. That just ain’t me, not now anyways. Me and Coot‘s weddin’s gonna be so cool…Lots a bikes roarin’ and beer flowin’ and meat sizzlin’ on the fire. None of that champagne toast crap for us. We’re gonna be real. We’re gonna make it all ours….despite what my Momma might think.

Speakin’ of Momma, she’s been houndin’ me to get all registered for gifts and such. I keep tryin’ ta tell her that we don’t want any of that crap from department stores. What do I need fancy dishes and crystal glasses for, huh? I am never gonna use them that’s for sure…and I don’t plan on holdin’ any fancy dinners neither. The kind of people we hang with drink straight from the beer can and eat off paper plates. I guess I can look at the Wal-Mart and see what they got for kitchen stuff. They got nice things and if sumthin’ breaks, it can be replaced real easy. One thing we do want to get are matchin’ tattoos, so ya’ll can get us gift certificates for Joe-Bob’s Tats. Also, anythin’ from the Harley Davidson Store would be cool as hell! Of course, the best gift is cold, hard cash and plenty of it!

This column is a parody of the Gothic fantasy series, True Blood, and as such, is presented here for your amusement. Traveling with Joe Manganiello

If you’re a fan of werewolves, then you should be howling over the newest were to hit the True Blood scene: Alcide Herveaux. Joe Manganiello plays bodyguard were in the third season of HBO’s hit series. However, before he was howling at the moon for a living, the 33 year old actor was a roadie for the band Goldfinger, which allowed him to travel all over. Though his home is now in Los Angeles, this traveler has his eyes set on Europe, which he has never visited before.

Joe‘s favorite destination is Australia; he fell in love with the metropolitan cities set against the backdrop of beautiful beaches. There’s no language barrier and no one is honking their horns; the music is relaxed and the cuisine is superb. For Joe, it has the best of all worlds.

For weekend getaways, Joe is quick to cite Las Vegas as a favorite. While he was there recently, he took in the HBO boxing events as well as seeing Cirque de Soleil. To top that off, he ate at some amazing restaurants. What tops Las Vegas? Joe notes,

“San Diego is a town I really love. If I didn’t need to live in LA right now for work, I could definitely see myself living there. Julian (Calif.) is a charming and historically preserved gold-mining town up in the mountains about an hour outside of San Diego that I love. There is a line of pie shops there that all serve fresh-baked hot apple pie. It’s a great place to spend an afternoon. Make sure you stop to check out the views.”

As an avid traveler, Joe has some great tips when it comes to picking a hotel and restaurant. He cites the London NYC hotel as impressive as well a the Four Season in Las Vegas. He also mentions,

“The Mandarin Oriental Las Vegas (mandarinoriental.com/lasvegas) was also extremely impressive, especially their restaurant Twist. Dinner was like being a judge on “Iron Chef.” It was amazing! Also I wholeheartedly recommend La Concha Resort (laconcharesort.com) in Puerto Rico. Gorgeous! My favorite restaurants are generally old-school steakhouses like The Palm Restaurant (thepalm.com), Mastro’s (mastrosrestaurants.com) and Delmonico’s (delmonicositaliansteakhouse.com)”

Though his favorite cities are San Juan, Puerto Rico; Sydney, Australia; Melbourne, Australia; Charleston, SC, and New York City, Joe would love to visit Egypt and Bora Bora. He also wants to explore all of Europe. Wherever he travels he looks into the art scene, whether it’s plays, music shows, museums, exhibits, etc.

With all his travels, It seems like Joe‘s next acting gig might be hosting a traveling guide, where he travels to different parts of the world every episode. No doubt his fans are going to be struck with the travel bug too and who knows, maybe they’ll get a glimpse of this traveling were!

Kevin Alejandro Says Jesus is Definitely Something

Kevin Alejandro is one of True Blood‘s Season 3 newbies.  He plays Jesus, a care giver in a nursing home where he cares for Lafayette‘s (Nelsan Ellis) senile mother, played by Alfre Woodard.

It’s in this nursing home where Jesus meets Lafayette and the attraction is quite obvious.

“We meet and there are sparks”, says Alejandro.  “I didn’t want people to second guess that this could be a real relationship.  Nelsan and I have incredible chemistry.  Everything we do is very real.”

In an article for Out Magazine, Kevin explained that the relationship between Jesus and Lafayette is a good balance.  “They’re opposites but it works.”

Being that there are so many new vampires and werewolves this season, Kevin would not say if Jesus is a human or supernatural.  All he would reveal is that Jesus is “something”.

The article mentions that this season is very “homoerotic”.  In addition to the relationship between Jesus and Lafayette, with vampire Bill‘s blood in him, Sam Merlotte (Sam Trammell) has fantasy dreams of Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer).  Kevin said it’s an incredibly sexy season.

Interestingly, though, the pressure for Kevin is not in playing a gay man (he is married with a daughter), but in staying fit to look good next to Ryan Kwanten, who plays Jason StackhouseRyan is often without some piece of clothing, and Kevin said he “is built like the perfect dude”.

“You get next to someone like that and you think, Crap, I really have a lot of work to do.  I’m like, ‘Please, whatever you do, don’t put me in a scene with my shirt off next to this dude’.”

Something tells me the female fans of True Blood really don’t mind one bit!

10 Things I’ve Learned about Vamps and Weres from Watching True Blood

Vampires and Werewolves are such interesting creatures, aren’t they?  From my observations of these two supernatural species on True Blood I’ve learned so much about their habits, behavior and culture.  Here’s some of what I’ve learned:

1. Werewolves enjoy a good howl. (And probably a good scratch behind the ears, too.)

2. Vampires enjoy a good smoke. (As long as it’s a cigar and not a woman. Huh?)

3. Werewolves have lousy fashion sense. (Understandable, I guess, if you’re always ripping your clothes off.)

4. Vampires have great fashion sense. (Though when they have the time to clothes-shop, I have no idea. Perhaps that’s what minions are for.)

5. Werewolves like to watch lame game shows like Let’s Make a Deal. (Obviously Jeopardy is too cerebral. I bet Vampires are ace at Jeopardy.)

6. Vampires are extremely messy eaters. (Ever heard of a napkin, guys!? At least werewolves have an excuse: they have no hands!)

7. Werewolves don’t do housework. (Or even decorate, apparently.)

8. Vampires don’t do housework. (Vampires will make a mess all over your carpet and expect that if they smile prettily at you, you’ll to clean it up for them. See, above, about minions.)

9. Werewolves can’t hold their V. (When they get high they tend to prance around like serial-killer schoolgirls.)

10. Vampires can hold a grudge – for an inordinately long period of time. (Oh dear Russell, you are so for it!)

So what have you learned?

Grant Bowler Talks Coot, True Blood and his “Love Scene” With Stephen Moyer

Grant Bowler spoke to EW.com’s Popwatch about his character on True Blood and his upcoming projects. Grant plays Coot, a werewolf hired by the vampire king Russell Edgington to kidnap Bill Compton, in Season 3 of True Blood. As we have seen, Coot is addicted to vampire blood and is engaged to Debbie Pelt, Alcide‘s ex-girlfriend. Grant said he knew his character would be a little wild when his audition consisted of him wrapping a silver chain around Bill‘s neck, feeding off him and howling.  He jokingly describes that scene as a love scene between him and Stephen Moyer, who plays Bill Compton, saying:

“That was a love scene. It took all day to shoot, and Stephen Moyer and I laughed so hard in the back of the car – we were almost blowing takes, we were giggling so much — that we actually fell in love. We’re having a bromance.”

That scene was fantastic and aside from Grant and Stephen, Don Swayze was also introduced in that episode, playing Gus another one of the werewolves who kidnaps Bill. Grant described working with Don:

Don Swayze was irrepressible. Swapping the blood [with the front seat passenger] was in the script, but the entire way Don went about doing it, the complete wrongness of it, that was all him. ‘Shall I lean in right over his mouth?’ Ahhh. Don is fearless. He’s absolutely fearless. We’re in the back of that shot, and I’m howling with laughter and it’s all that Moyer can do to keep a straight face and look like he’s in agony ’cause Don Swayze just pushed the boat out and let go.”

In last week’s episode Alcide and Sookie crashed Coot and Debbie’s engagement party. At the end of the party Coot brands his fiancee and then begins to howl and cause the weres to transform. How does Grant feel about the branding?

“I think that’s just the best way to get engaged, to brand your intended with a hot iron. That screams romance to me. And love. Commitment!”

One plus about his role is that Grant‘s 7 year old daughter is thrilled that he can turn into a werewolf. Given the nature of the show he will have to very selectively go through the scenes to find the ones where he actually shifts so his daughter can see, but it is exciting for her nonetheless to be able to tell everyone her dad is a werewolf.

Grant says that Coot really enjoys Bill‘s misery and delights in making him even more miserable. He also confirms that Joe Manganiello is “just enormous”.

Grant is currently filming “The Killer Elite” with Clive Owen and Robert De Niro. He will play an SAS Officer and war hero. He recently finished filming “The City of Gardens” where he will play “a schizophrenic named Jesus Christ who is stuck in solitary confinement.”

Joe Manganiello Says Dating a Werewolf is Tough

Originally, Joe Manganiello auditioned for the role of Coot, one of True Blood‘s new werewolves in Season 3 of HBO‘s mega hit series. The show being Joe‘s favorite, he wanted to be part of it and really wanted to play a werewolf.

The role of Alcide was not yet available, but that’s the role Joe wanted. After a friend sent him a link to a Charlaine Harris fan website and he discovered he was suggested to play the leading werewolf, Joe started reading Charlaine‘s books, on which the TV series is based, and found that the description of Alcide Herveaux fit him perfectly.

Joe said in an interview with Movieline, that when the audition for Coot came down to 5 guys, he noticed his appearance was very different from the others. At 6’5″, Joe tends to tower over many actors. Wondering what was up, he became excited when he was informed he didn’t get the part but they wanted him to read with Anna Paquin (Sookie Stackhouse) for the role of Alcide.

“I was excited for it. Alcide was the part that I wanted. I would have been completely happy to play Coot, but the character of Alcide in the books is described as being physically like me. It’s almost like a perfect match, so I was really hoping that Alcide would come up. It was my favorite show before I auditioned for it, though, so anything on the show would have made me happy.”

While shooting each episode takes a long time, the actors don’t get to see much of each other. Joe explained that all 30 cast members come together at the read table, but then “go off in separate groups to shoot the scenes.” “Seeing the episodes when they air is really neat because you have no idea what everybody’s been doing for the last seven months.”

Joe admitted to having some anxiety over watching himself in his first episode. He explained that the show is a lot more complicated than some people may think. It’s not just about vampires and werewolves.

Alan [Ball] and the other writers are so good at writing these nuanced characters, and that alone is enough to play. Then aside from that, you get a dialect, and aside from that, you’re a werewolf! You get in there the first day of shooting, and you think, “I’ll either look really cool or I’ll look like the biggest idiot on the planet.”

He did go online after his first episode and was comforted that the fans seemed happy with his character.

On playing Alcide, two areas that Joe had to prepare for were the nude scenes and the southern accent. One of his nude scenes was in a field during broad daylight. According to Joe, the crew was more uncomfortable than he was.

In discussing his character, Joe said that Alcide has had a difficult time being a werewolf. As a result, he’s been kind of a recluse.

“It’s almost like he has a secret identity, in the way that Superman has a secret identity. He’s born with this power that he has to hide from the rest of the world, and he looks at human beings to find out what “normal” is and then he pretends to be that. You know, dating as a werewolf is kind of tough. [Laughs] There are a lot of talks that you need to have.”

Now that shooting for Season 3 is over, how is Joe enjoying himself? Eating junk food again! His protein diet regime kept him buffed for the screen.

Asked about his height and if it ever is a liability for him, Joe said it has been a little bit of a challenge. A lot of leading men are shorter, so unless the part is right, he’s been mostly a character actor. He’s really glad that True Blood “wanted someone who could match up physically with Alex Skarsgaard [Eric Northman]”.

Brit Morgan Talks About Debbie Pelt and her “True Blood Initiation”

Brit Morgan, who portrays Alcide’s trailer trash ex-girlfriend Debbie Pelt in Season 3 of True Blood, sat down with HBO to talk about her character and what we can expect to see.  In Debbie’s first episode she is stripped down to her underwear, passed around a bar full of werewolves and then branded.  No easing into the job for Brit!  She tells HBO:

Debbie is a passionate, ballsy, kick-ass lady who’s going through a bit of a rough patch, dealing with her ex-boyfriend Alcide and being branded into this new group of werewolves.  Then Sookie crosses her path, and it’s kind of all downhill from there.”

Brit says that she can identify with Debbie‘s insecurities and her outspoken nature.  Stepping into the role of a villain is no easy task.  How did she feel about taking on this role?

“Um, pressure. Really exciting.  Totally surprising. I didn’t even know how bad-ass I was going to get to be. I  just wanted to do Debbie justice.  I meet people all the time who talk about stuff that Debbie did in the books, and I just kind of explain, “It’s a little different in the series…”  Because I have a drug addiction and kind of a trailer-trash thing going on, which wasn’t in the books.  So that’s a big difference there. I hope people like the changes.”

Brit explains that this season, we will see a “tornado of a woman” in Debbie. With the drugs, the jealousy, resentment, etc. it makes for an interesting character.  Debbie will continue to go downhill and given the potential match of Alcide and Sookie we can only imagine that a lot of her anger will be directed at Sookie.

Any actor/actress who joins the cast of True Blood accepts that at some point they will likely have to strip out of their clothes.  HBO asked Brit how it felt to be stripped down on her first day.  She responded:

“My first day at work – it was my “True Blood” initiation.  I’m not gonna lie: it was totally liberating and one of the most awesome things I’ve ever done.  I was thinking “I will never again be in a room full of 100 bikers who are tearing my clothes off.”  It was insane, and great in the moment.  Once the weekend came, I kinda sat back and was like “I can’t believe what just happened. I feel violated…[laughs]”

We are looking forward to watching Debbie Pelt stir things up.

Joe Manganiello Talks Sookie, Debbie and the Season Finale

Joe Manganiello, who plays Sookie‘s new werewolf bodyguard Alcide in Season 3 of True Blood, admits that he was a huge fan of the show even before he joined the cast and he found his first day of filming very exciting.  Joe tells the New York Post:

“I remember filming the scene and literally thinking, “oh my god, that’s Sookie Stackhouse!”  Seeing Lafayette in full makeup was another amazing thing. There’s never a dull moment.  I sit there and play my part, but I also have a front row seat to Ryan Kwanten and Chris Bauer doing their thing as I bite the inside of my cheek to keep from laughing in their takes. It’s really awesome.”

Getting the part was just one half of the challenge.  The role of Alcide calls for complete physical fitness and required Joe to get into his best shape ever.  While he is naturally a big guy and genetics are in his favor, it still took a lot of work to get that body.  Charlaine Harris describes Alcide as having arms like boulders so Joe had to hit the gym.  He had his own ideas of what he felt the character should look like and he worked hard to make it happen.  When asked what attracted him to the Alcide character, Joe responded:

“He’s a character with a lot of heart who’s all about loneliness.  Being this giant superpowered person who has to live within the confines of human society, he’s had to live this solitary lifestyle.  I also grew up as a really big kid.  I could have beat every kid up in elementary school and stolen their lunch money.  But for me it was that struggle of learning how to be big and strong but not hurt other people.  And I think there’s a lot of that in Alcide. Learning to be weaker to appease everyone else.  And I think he battles with that, which is why it’s really fun when I get to let the beast out.”

Alcide has been ordered by Eric to help Sookie infiltrate a werewolf pack in an effort to locate Bill.  It is clear that he is not overly thrilled at being volunteered for the job and we learn in his first episode that Alcide’s ex Debbie Pelt is now engaged to Coot, the leader of the were gang that kidnapped Bill. With Alcide‘s growing attraction to Sookie, what part will Alcide and Debbie‘s history play in Season 3?  According to Joe, Alcide and Debbie have a very volatile relationship.  Adding that to the SookieBillEricAlcide quadrangle should make for a great season.

Alcide‘s in a dark, lonely, sad, heartbroken place because his fiancé, Debbie Pelt, has left him. His psycho ex girlfriend – she’s still floating around, causing trouble.  Then you’ve got Sookie going through her trials and tribulations with Bill. I think if you stick people in that situation – this big, strong, protective bodyguard with a girl, both heartbroken, sparks will happen. There’s a bit of lost puppy going on there.”

Fans are excited about the addition of the werewolves and other supernatural beings this season and Joe teases us in a big way when he tells the New York Post that the Season 3 finale has a much bigger cliff-hanger than the Season 2 finale did.  He tells us the finale is:

“Worse. Way worse. Waaaay worse. You have no idea what they’re going to spring on you in season three, it’s crazy. You’ve got the introduction of my race and a lot about where Sookie comes from. They answer a lot of questions and in answering those questions they open up a whole new universe. It’s pretty wild.”

While we definitely are not ready for the season to be over we are really looking forward to seeing how this all plays out!

HBO’s Interview with Joe Manganiello

HBO recently sat down with the new star and werewolf of True Blood, Joe Manganiello. He had some interesting teasers for all of the fans of the show who are chomping at the bit for more information.

Now that Alcide has finally met up with Sookie, there is yet another man in her life.  Since Sookie is searching for Bill and being courted by Eric, is there any hope for Alcide? Joe says,

“It’s really for Alan Ball to answer. Alcide presents a very interesting option for Sookie… They’re both kind of in interesting spots as far as relationships go.”

Unlike most of the other werewolves we’ve seen thus far, Alcide has been pack-less.  Likewise, he has also been true to his promise to Eric and actually risked  harm to keep Sookie safe.  How does Joe Manganiello get into the groove of playing a solitary and somewhat less ferocious werewolf? Joe described Alcide as a man who “wants to live his life out quietly.” The monster facade Alcide has was “constructed to keep people away from how sensitive they are.”

Any actor who signs on to True Blood knows that it will only be a matter of time before they are shirtless. Alcide is no exception to this rule as the season goes on. Therefore, Manganiello worked with Ron Mathews (the same trainer who got Hugh Jackman into shape to play Wolverine—ironic, no?)  to get into shape for this role.  Joe describes the process:

I met with him and did two workouts a day.  My shoulders and arms got bigger, but my waist got way smaller.  I’ve had to get all new jeans.

Due to the fact that going into and out of wolf form leaves you naked, it sounds like Manganiello may be rivaling Jason for shirtless onscreen time this season. Joe believes that he is taking Jason‘s place as the “piece of meat” on True Blood this season, but he definitely takes it well. Joe said that he won’t be the same physically in 15 years, so he’s taking advantage of how in shape he is now.

Each of the actors who play werewolves actually get a real-life wolf counterpart. Manganiello’s co-star, Thunder, is one of the larger wolves in the pack that has been brought in for True BloodJoe recalls the first time he met Thunder as intimidating. When Joe and Thunder were first introduced, Joe was a bit scared because Thunder kept trying to stare him down. It didn’t help that Thunder is a huge wolf and a wild animal.

Even though Alcide may not have a group of werewolves whom he swears loyalty to (that we know about yet) on True BloodManganiello himself is not without a pack:

My girlfriend has a Yorkie and a King Charles.  She has these two little dogs that she calls my “wolf pack at home.”  She’s waiting for the were-Yorkie on True Blood.

Joe Manganiello on Werewolves Versus Vampires

Every Sci-fi fan has asked the age old question: who would come up victorious in a battle between a werewolf and a vampire? There’s are lot of theories and True Blood’s own Joe Manganiello isn’t any different. Joe plays werewolf Alcide, which has given him a lot of experience on the show brawling with werewolves, vampires, and shape-shifters alike. Funny thing is, for Joe, shape-shifters don’t even make the cut. The real actions lies when a werewolf and vampire meet head on.

Joe admits that when it comes to brute strength vampires are superior, especially one that is thousands of years old. However, even with this being the case, there are werewolves that could undoubtedly take out a vampire.

In Joe’s opinion, Alcide is a werewolf that could hold his own  in any brawl against any supernatural. Joe notes,

“That was important for me in creating Alcide…A vampire can get away with being pale, thin and skinny but still being powerful. Werewolves have to look like animals — really big, strong animals. I wanted Alcide to be as powerfully built as possible so you would see him and think that he could take out a vampire. I think throwing him into an arena, you would have a pretty good fight between the vampires and the werewolves.”

What about the other supernaturals? Where would a shape-shifter fit in this chain of strength? Joe doesn’t really see a shape-shifter winning in a battle between a werewolf or a vampire, unless that shape-shifter was extraordinary…perhaps like Sam Merlotte or his little brother Tommy Mickens? Joe reveals,

werewolves are generally thought of as being the strongest of the shape-shifters. Probably the most egotistical, too!”

It seems like Joe has been able to give Alcide all the traits he needs to be top of his pack; Season 3 is going to have a lot of face offs between vampires and werewolves…perhaps the age old question will be answered Sunday nights on HBO’s True Blood.

A Moment with Grant Bowler: Head of the Pack

Grant-Bowler-Cooter-Werewolf-TrueBloodIf you have noticed nothing else about the world of True Blood it in its brand new third season, it is that werewolves are now very predominant.  In fact, there has been a werewolf in every episode of the third season thus far.  There has been one pack that stands out amongst the rest: Cooter’s pack.  This is the group that is seemingly responsible for the abduction of Bill and that works the vampire King of Mississippi.  This is the same pack that has been labeled as “Neo-Nazis.”

Recently, TV Guide has had the chance to ask a few questions to Grant Bowler, the actor responsible for bringing Cooter to life.

Grant was asked about what he could tell us about Cooter and his pack, and he said that he considers Cooter a “redneck Romeo” and that the werewolves have a lot planned. They’re not just trying to find people to bully.

And as for what we can expect between Cooter and Bill… Well, we know that they can’t stand each other, even though their relationship was supposed to begin as a professional one. Now they just want each other dead.

Grant also admitted to being a fan of True Blood before he was cast.

“I felt like Alan was writing a comedy – like the world’s darkest comedy.  And I loved it.”

Grant discussed his experience working in some of his dark, graphic scenes. He said that he’s amazed by how far True Blood and it’s writers are willing to go. In fact, he’s never heard Alan Ball or any of the writers make comments about the show going ‘too far,’ which is unique to True Blood.

Grant even talked about what it’s like on set with the cast of True Blood. He said,

“I think there were 34 actors and every one of them was as sharp as a tack, perfectly cast, and brilliant at what they do…It’s very laid-back, and they laugh their butts off…that material is so dark and so fraught.  They just laugh from dawn until the next dawn.”

Finally, TV Guide asked if Grant could share any teasers. Grant‘s response? Sookie‘s a lot more special than we think, so expect new things from her that you haven’t seen before.

Joe Manganiello, Newest Star on True Blood

For every actor trying to break into stardom they must begin with a guest spot here and there, a recurring role, and then finally that one role that opens the golden doors of fame.

For Joe Manganiello, playing the werewolf Alcide in the HBO series True Blood may prove to be the role that will make him a star.

The Mt. Lebanon native started his journey as a graduate of Mt. Lebanon High School, then a 2000 graduate of Carnegie Melon University, before snagging the role of Flash Thompson in the Spider-man movies as well as recurring roles on How I Met Your Mother and One Tree Hill. Now he has been given the opportunity to play Alcide, which has come at the best time in popular culture given that werewolves are what’s hot thanks to Taylor Lautner and the Twilight series.

In an interview with the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Joe talked about how, unlike other shows or movies, True Blood focuses on the deeper levels and characters of the supernatural. Joe notes,

“It’s a lot richer, more character-driven. What’s interesting about this character to me is it really gets into the backstory. It gets into what it must have been like to grow up with this. He was a kid who was born with this thing that manifests itself around puberty, and you get an idea that he had to live as a recluse and hide and not let people know what he really is.”

To better understand his character, Joe connected Alcide’s experiences to that of his own father. Joe’s father was left-handed during a time when schools were programming their children to be right-handed. For Joe it was a perfect parallel because as he puts it,

“This guy was born with this amazing ability but has to live in a society forcing him to not show that or be something else and try to fit in.”

It seems that Joe will fit into the True Blood world very nicely as he is being thrown into a love square right away. Alcide is a bodyguard for Sookie Stackhouse, while she searches for her vampire lover Bill Compton. Alcide is hired by Eric Northman, who is very interested in Sookie for more than one reason. It seems though, both vampires might have to contend with this werewolf as there is chemistry between Alcide and Sookie.

Why wouldn’t Sookie have an attraction to? As Joe sees it, Alcide isn’t like the rough and tumble werewolves the fans have been introduced to in True Blood. Instead, he’s tried very hard to live within human society, which may be something Sookie will appreciate.

However, as much as Alcide is a part of the human world, he is still very much a werewolf and Joe wanted to portray that physically in his character. Through five months of hard physical training and by sporting a beard Joe has achieved a physical Alcide. Joe notes,

“I wanted him to be built like an animal would…I wanted the audience to look and see a physically strong creature.”

His body will be on display very much on the show given his supernatural ability to change from human to animal. Being naked after his transformations means that Joe has become part of the ‘brotherhood of the sock’. Depending on the scene, Joe will have to wear a variety of different coverings that give the illusion of being naked.

Acting nude isn’t what Joe imagined as his future career. After a football injury, Joe began to take his amateur hobby for film-making more seriously and focused his attention on acting. His volleyball and football coaches had thought this decision was a stupid move on Joe’s part, but when he scored a role in the Mt Lebanon production of Oklahoma, they were proven wrong.

It’s been a difficult road for Joe; he didn’t get accepted into Carnegie Melon’s acting program his senior year of high school,l but Joe didn’t let defeat hinder him. Instead he attended Pittsburgh University for a year and then reapplied, ultimately getting accepted.

Now it seems he will be on True Blood for quite a while, as long as the  producers don’t decide to change up the trajectory of Alcide’s character. An optimistic Joe notes that the the character is a prominent figure in the 10th Charlaine Harris novel, which is the basis for the show.

With such a role comes the rising of fame. Recently Joe has been invited to attend a Steelers game this season, as well as a possible role in November’s Celebrate the Season Parade. The Steelers aren’t the only ones proud of the young actor. Joe’s parents are letting all of their friends know about their son’s achievements.

As soon as a few episodes of True Blood begin airing this season, Joe’s dad will go down to Primanti’s and pitch the idea to get his son’s face painted on their wall, which would be like winning an Oscar in Joe’s eyes.

This Spring Joe did film a pilot for CBS set in Pittsburgh, but the network ultimately passed. The show revolved around a sports dad with a five month old infant. Joe used this opportunity to use a  Pittsburghese accent and to showcase his own love for sports.

Though the pilot was a no go, Joe still has the opportunity to shine brightly in True Blood. Thankfully, there are going to be a lot of full moons these summer Sunday nights, so we’ll be seeing a lot of our sexy new werewolf!

Joe Manganiello Was Meant To Be Alcide

Joe Manganiello was a fan of HBO‘s True Blood from the beginning. When a friend sent him a link to fansite, where fans were speculating about who would be a good Alcide, Joe noticed that his picture was posted.  Thinking this was really cool, Joe ordered Charlaine Harris‘ books, on which the show is based, and thought, yeah, the character is similar to him.  He made sure he did not miss an episode.

Speaking with USA Weekend, Joe relayed the story he’s told before about how he loved the old monster movies and prayed for months that he’d turn into a werewolf.  Now, 25 years later, Joe is thrilled that he has actually turned into one.

Getting into character on the set the first day was a bit stressful for Joe.  He wanted to get the role right for Charlaine, creator Alan Ball, for the fans and for himself, as a big fan as well.

“Showing up that first day, there was a lot of pressure on me but it was also a lot of fun. I remember being in the middle of a scene on my first day and, in the middle of the scene, looking at Anna [Paquin] and my brain’s going, ‘That’s Sookie Stackhouse!  And that’s Sookie’s house!'”

When asked about the wolf playing his alter ego, Joe sounded like a kid.  It’s a live wolf named Thunder, a giant North American timber wolf with yellow eyes.  According to Joe, he’s beautiful.  “We both play the same character – I turn into him and he turns into me.”

Explaining that certain protocol has to be followed in order to get near real wolves, Joe said he did visit their ranch.  With supervision, he was allowed to take Thunder for a 45-minute romp.  The wolf responded to his name and allowed Joe to pet him.  Having gone through the acclimation period, it appears Joe met with Thunder’s approval.

Getting back to werewolves, Joe was asked how they fit into society.  They have not come out as vampires have, and they cannot be treated by normal doctors or stay in jail for over a month (that full moon thing!).

“There’s a lot of these rules and curiosities to werewolf society we explore through this season.  And on top of that, you have the relationship between werewolves and vampires because they both know of each other and hate each other.  When I was auditioning for the part, Alan said, “When a werewolf thinks of a vampire, I want you to think of the way that a Jew would think of a Nazi.”

Alcide becomes Sookie‘s bodyguard, so we’ll see them together a lot. Additionally, Alcide had his heart broken when his fiance left him.  With Sookie‘s heart aching over her missing Bill (Stephen Moyer)… Joe just said “we’ll see what happens”.

Comparing film with television, Joe said he would like to get back into film, especially as a superhero – like perhaps Superman.  But he also stated that “True Blood is better than 99% of the movies I go and see in the theater.”  In True Blood, each character has his or her dark side.  And in real life, no one is pristine.

Joe will be participating on the True Blood panel at Comic-Con this year.  Although he has attended the conference in the past, with True Blood he’s expecting to experience something on the nature of a rock show.

Alcide should be making his appearance in this Sunday’s episode.

Spoiler: True Blood’s Vampire King Wants It All

Do NOT read this article unless you really want to know what’s behind Bill Compton‘s kidnapping.

We met Russell Edgington (Denis O’Hare) and his boyfriend Talbot (Theo Alexander) on last Sunday’s episode of True Blood.  But we continued to be as baffled as Bill (Stephen Moyer) as to why the vampire King of Mississippi brought him across state lines.

Special thanks to TVGuide for interviewing Denis O’Hare and providing us with the inside scoop.

How did Denis become a fan of the show?  He had not read the books and wasn’t ready to switch his allegiance from Alan Ball‘s previous show, Six Feet Under, to his new HBO series.  But watching four episodes with a friend had Denis calling his cable company to sign up for HBO On Demand so he could watch the entire season of True Blood.

So once he signed on, what did he learn about his character?  Denis said he was told that in addition to having a southern accent, Russell is a charming, powerful and very deadly vampire.  He is beyond morality and as an ancient pagan Celt of approximately 2,800 years, the king is so concerned with nature that he believes vampires should rule the earth because humans are ruining it.

About his relationship with Talbot, Denis referred to it as tragic.  As in many marriages, the two can be deeply in love but get caught into a cycle of constant bickering.  It’s Talbot‘s nature to be moody with sudden periods of darkness.  And Russell is often worrying about Talbot‘s happiness.

Now about Bill, what does the king want with him?  Russell wants to “become the first vampire president of the United States, and his first target is Louisiana.”  In order to do that, he figures he’ll have to blackmail Sophie-Anne (Evan Rachel Wood) into marrying him.

For some reason the queen wants Sookie (Anna Paquin) and the king knows this.  He wants Bill to spy on the queen to give him something to use for his blackmail scheme.  But the kicker is, “Along the way, he realizes that Sookie is actually the prize, and then he becomes obsessed with her.”  Everybody wants Sookie!  And we’re talking about a gay vampire king and a lesbian vampire queen.  What is Sookie?

In comparing the two monarchs, Denis said this:  “Russell is good with money.  Sophie-Anne is childish; she doesn’t know how to wield her power.  Russell knows exactly how to wield his power.  Sophie-Anne is cruel in a sort of off-handed way; Russell is cruel is an incredibly calculated way.  They’re both violent and autocratic, but Sophie-Anne is erratic. There’s nothing erratic about Russell.”

We noticed that Russell also likes werewolves.  He’s been keeping them in his employ for over 1,000 years.  They are completely addicted to his blood, so they are loyal to him and are his eyes during the daylight.  In the ancient druid culture, the raven and wolf work together.  In the Celtic language, Russell‘s real name means raven.  Hence his love of werewolves.

In the article Denis also revealed that the king will spend a lot of time in Fangtasia.  He will also be visiting many front porches instead of eating at Merlotte’s.

Russell is like a snake; he’s incredibly calm and incredibly charming… until he rips your f—ing spine out.  My hands have been so bloody I’ve had to come home and soak them for a couple of hours.”

Season 3 is about to spiral into the white knuckler ride the cast promised it would be.  Hold on tight!

Stephen Moyer’s Playboy Magazine Interview

With 20 years of acting experience, Stephen Moyer has gained notoriety as vampire Bill Compton on HBO‘s hit TV series, True Blood, now in its 3rd season.

In their July issue, Playboy Magazine interviewed Stephen Moyer where he discussed vampire sex, his prosthetic fangs, when he lost his virginity, his relationship with Anna Paquin and more in a very candid commentary.

On sex between a vampire and human, Stephen said that vampire sex is “muscular and physical” and could last for days.  So it would be less tiring for a female human and male vampire due to a human male’s not-so-lasting stamina.  And speaking of the attraction of human females to male vampires, I think Stephen hit the nail on the head, so to speak.

“I often think a lot of women’s attraction to vampires is based on the fact that vampires come from centuries ago, from eras of chivalry and courtly virtues.  So it’s about being treated like a lady but being physically overtaken in the sack.”

Comparing the undead to another supernatural creature, he informs us that sex with a vampire will never be hot and steamy because they are so cold.  Werewolves, however, are very hot.

Looking back at all the sex on the show’s first two seasons, Stephen wondered how they could possibly top that in this new season.

“Sex on our show is like a big muffin that’s heating up, overflowing and expanding in an oven.”

Now there’s a yummy visual!  And it seems that Stephen believes they have, indeed, found the topping.  With the show being focused on the characters, it promises to keep the sexual scenes interesting.

Stephen commented on his prosthetic fangs.  Laughing, he said that he has four sets and keeps one set at home.  They are insured and before they get locked up at night, they get a scrubbing with Listermint.

Asked to compare True Blood with Twilight, Stephen had a wonderful comparison.

“That’s like comparing Monterey Jack and Roquefort.”  “The Twilight movies fill a niche.  In her Twilight novels Stephenie Meyer has chosen a similar vampire framework to tell a story about burgeoning sexuality.  What’s interesting about our show is that sexuality has already burgeoned.  I wish Twilight the best of luck, but I’m very happy to be doing True Blood.”

So how did he come by the role of Bill Compton?  Over the course of his 20 years of acting, Stephen was fortunate to have steady work, with occasional unemployment lasting not more than 6 months.  Returning from back-to-back jobs away from home, he needed a time out and told his manager not to send him any scripts.  Fortunately for us, she convinced him to read “just this one”.  Three days later he was in the office of show creator, Alan Ball.

Moving on to his personal life, Playboy asked Stephen to comment on his relationship with fiance Anna, the paparazzi and losing his virginity.

He has a very trusting and loving relationship with Anna, both on the set and off.  Stephen and Anna and an instant connection during the filming of the pilot for the show and when they finished filming and left for their home towns (Stephen for London and Anna for New York) they Skyped every night for 3-4 hours. He said he “felt as though part of me had been removed when Anna and I were apart.” In describing his relationship with Anna, Stephen states,

“I’ll take 74,000 words to express an emotion because I fear hurting someone’s feelings. Anna will do it in three words. But we trust each other so implicitly that there’s never anything hurtful; it always comes from a loving place. It’s not as though people I’ve been with before haven’t been loving, but with Anna it’s just about pure trust, on camera and off. I have never trusted anybody like I trust Anna.”

Although Stephen doesn’t mind the press taking photos of him, he is concerned about their hounding of his children.  But he understands they’re doing their jobs and figures if they’re taking pictures of him and Anna, then their show must be popular.  He said he’s got nothing to hide from the cameras and they’re welcome to shoot him every morning picking up his dog’s poop.

With all the talk of vampire sex and all the sex on the show, Stephen was asked about losing his virginity.  He did not say at what age he started playing naughty games, but he did say he was very young, “below legal age”.

“I was quite young when I started doing all right, below legal age and with somebody I knew very well. It happened outdoors and was very naughty and unexpected. In my little village some girls reached maturity at a young age, and there was a lot of ‘you show me yours and I’ll show you mine’ stuff happening, lots of looking and a little bit of touching too, from a very young age.”

It also seems that Stephen was a bit of a wild one growing up as he retold the story of how at the age of 13 he would took his parent’s car out racing around with his best friend while his parents were out to racing on a racetrack for his 15th birthday.  Though once he was legally allowed to drive he didn’t have a chance to drive for long.  Apparently after getting his Mini and jazzing it up with racing stuff he lost his driver’s license three weeks after obtaining it for DUI.  He had to wait a year before he could legally drive again, but with his streak I wonder if that stopped him anyway.
