Vampire Look Invades Fashion World

December 5, 2009

Fashion – particularly the make-up world – is totally in sync with the vampire genre. Nowadays, celebrities are flashing the new pale make-up craze and are not afraid to flaunt their pale complexions. And the inspiration behind this craze is none other than the massive success of True Blood and Twilight.

This may sound absurd to the others, but according to an online beauty shop, FeelUnique.com, sales of pale make-up increased by a whooping 200 percent during the past month. Also, L’Oreal’s True Match rose ivory powder’s sales escalated by 133 percent. It’s fantastic to know that women – especially those who are pale-skinned who resorted to tanning creams and lotions just to have the famous sun-kissed look – are now proudly flaunting their pale complexions and wearing pale make-up. And celebrities like Twilight’s Kristen Stewart and the UK’s Girls Aloud member Nicola Roberts top the list of celebrities who love to do the vamp look.

Siobhan McDermott of FeelUnique said,

“Porcelain skin is a classic, chic and glamorous look but has long been shunned in favor of bronzed skin. It is great to see that this trend is making women proud to be pale and those who aren’t, envious.”

Carrie Preston Mentions Season 3 And More

December 1, 2009

Carrie PrestonCarrie Preston who portrays Arlene Fowler – the spicy woman who works with Sookie at Merlotte’s in HBO’s True Blood, talked about her character, her wig, cracking up with the other cast members in between takes, stress handling, Buddhism, and much more!

Carrie is a natural blonde but her character is red haired so she wears a red wig and named it “Gwynnie”. She said,

“I like being in the blonde realm. I often change my hair color for roles, but keeping your real hair that particular color of red is really hard to maintain. I would have to dye it before every episode! Plus, the wig has become a character in and of itself. We call it Gwynnie because apparently it was made for Gwyneth Paltrow at some point, but I don’t think she ever ended up wearing it. The minute I get that wig on I want to start sassing people off.”

She said that on the set, she gets along with the others very well and they like cracking each other up in between takes.  They even made another version of Maryann’s “Lo Lo Bromios! Lo lo Dentrites! Lo lo Eleutherious! Lo Le Enorches” chant instead “Lo Lo Burritos. Lo Lo nachos. Lo Lo Dentures. Lo Lo Eucalyptus trees.”  She mentions that she wasn’t sure if the sound editors were either laughing their heads off or cursing them in post production.

Carrie also shared what her mentor once told her. “Keep yourself open to the mysteries of life even if the world is crumbling around you.” That’s why when she’s stressed or overwhelmed, she tries to remember to stay open which helps her to calm down. She’s also practices Buddhism which has been part of her life for several years now and helps deal with any bad days so encounters..

“I’ve taken an in interest in meditation and Buddhism for the last several years. So I do what they suggest and try not to resist the discomfort because that only causes more suffering. I try to sit with whatever is making me miserable and let it be because I know it will eventually pass. This is of course much easier said than done!”

She is also trying her best to give something back to the art world. Currently, she is a board member of the New Harmony Project, a volunteer for Free Arts for Abused Children and a supporter of the Actors Fund of America. And to uplift struggling artists she provides these words of advice,

“I would encourage them to not give their power away to others and to appoint themselves the authority on what they can and cannot do in their lives. I would also suggest to them to find ways to create their own work when they are looking for other people to hire them. It keeps you sane and focused on creating and not just on getting a job.”

Together with the other cast members, Carrie will begin filming Season 3 and she revealed that something very unexpected is going to happen with Arlene this season. All that is now left for us to do to quench our thirst for True Blood is to speculate what on earth it could possibly be!

Wonder what Carrie‘s character is going to do?  How is she going to handle it? Click here to be taken to the discussion area on our forum for this article.

True Blood’s Masters FX Effects

November 29, 2009

Sookie-InjuredWe have seen True Blood‘s special effects and somehow we now have an idea on how True Blood vampires would die if you staked them.  The Twilight Saga, New Moon, hired the same company that True Blood uses to do their special effects. That company is none other than the 22-year-old Los Angeles-based company – Masters FX.

Masters FX is owned by Todd Masters, a graduate of Sammamish High School. Masters is a drop-out of Seattle’s Cornish School of Arts after attending for just a day when he was 18. But this did not impede his dreams and look at where he is at the moment. His company is credited for the contributions to films like Predator, Mortal Kombat, Nightmare on Elm Street and the t.v. show Fringe. The company’s latest assignment was Twilight Saga’s New Moon. Among his company’s contribution to New Moon were the wounds, scars, tattoos of the Quileute characters and the very sparkly vampire death.

But Masters is not into the sparkly death of vampires He said,

“We’re not really into the whole sparkly vampire thing. Vampires don’t sparkle.”

However, Masters FX worked their expertise in the third installment in the franchise, “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse,” which is due out in June.   If he doesn’t like the sparkly deaths of Twilight vampires, perhaps he loves True Blood vampires‘ messy death.

How To Deal With Vampires

November 27, 2009

BillVampires are now considered as boyfriend material. Correct me if I’m wrong but some would even want to present themselves to be bitten by the odd creatures. But if the likes of True Blood’s Bill and Eric or Twilight’s Edward Cullen and Stefan Salvatore of Vampire Diaries and oh, let’s not forget the old time favorite – Dracula would fall for you, can you resist?! Anyway, here’s the “how to” list in dealing with vampires.

How to make sure he’s a vampire…
True Blood vampires are out and about in public. So, Bill, Eric, and the others would surely tell you that they’re vampires and well, they’re night creatures so you’ll be able to only see them at night time. Twilight saga’s Edward Cullen has icy skin, and changing eye color and when he’s exposed to sunlight, he’ll definitely sparkle. But it’s difficult to tell if Stefan of Vampire Diaries is a real vampire because you need to ask him so it depends on him if he’ll tell you the truth or not. On the other hand, Dracula’s the easiest to spot – he doesn’t have a reflection in a mirror and he wears the his legendary cape and tux.

How to make him fall in love with you…
If Bill’s your type, you have to treat him equally and you shouldn’t be afraid of his odd vampire ways and be generous enough to let him taste your blood. You have to smell like Edward’s favorite dinner and dessert if you want him badly. You also need not to freak out when Stefan tells you that he’s a vampire. But if you love the old Dracula, you should perfect the lust craft and it would also help if you resemble the woman he used to love in the past hundreds of years.

How to keep him away and protect yourself….
Don’t invite Bill inside your humble abode – he can’t let himself in if you don’t give your permission and anything silver will cause injuries. You need to look into Edward’s eyes for an indicator – if it’s black, it means ravenous and risky and if it’s golden, sated and safe. To drive Stefan away, wear a locket around your neck that contains vervain and just like Bill, he can’t come inside your house if he has no permission but just try not to look in his eyes – he can hypnotize you for sure. On the other hand, garlic and a cross will do for Dracula.

How to kill him…
A stake right through Bill’s heart would definitely end him. As for Edward, you’ll be needing the help of the Volturi. If you’re aching to kill Stefan, weaken him using vervain and then stake him. And still you need to stake Dracula preferably when he’s resting in his favorite coffin.

How to keep him yours forever…
Persuade Bill to be your maker – that is letting him drain you and drink some of his blood then spend a night together buried. Or convince Edward to bite and inject lots of venom into your body when you’re near death so that you’ll transform into a vampire like him. You have to get bitten by a vampire, feed on his blood, die, rise from the dead then feed on a human if you want to be with Stefan forever. And if you wanted to be Dracula’s companion, he must bite, drain and kill you but don’t worry because the next night, you’ll be like him.

Ryan Kwanten Comes Home To Australia To Film

November 25, 2009

Ryan KwantenRyan Kwanten who portrays Jason Stackhouse in True Blood is the lead  superhero in the upcoming Australian independent film entitled Griff The Invisible.

Griff The Invisible is directed and written by Leon Ford who believes that it might be Australia’s first superhero film and superhero romantic comedy. Griff is an office worker by day and he turns into a crime-fighting superhero at night.

From Ryan’s words we can sense a feeling of both attraction and desperation for this Aussie flick. He said,

“This film was something that went straight to my core. It’s the kind of story that you read and, even if I hadn’t got the role, it would have stuck with me. I put myself on tape in the States, and at the end of my audition I really just wanted to say ‘f*** guys, believe me I can do this. I am right for this.

The cast and crew have been shooting the film in the past month in inner Sydney. They also have filmed in Surry Hills alleyways, Hyde Park in the CBD, main hall at Central Station and around Pyrmont.

According to IMDb, Griff The Invisible is set to be released on June 1, 2010 in Australia.

Kwanten added,

“This was such an incredible story to be able to be a part of, and it was a total labour of love for everyone. It was really something special, and I hadn’t seen that in a while, because in the States they tend to, rather than solve things creatively, sometimes just throw a little too much money at it.”

Ryan Kwanten‘s acting performance in True Blood is quite a blast. So there’s no doubt that he’ll perfectly sync into Griff’s character in this film!

True Blood Vampires vs. The Others

November 24, 2009

True BloodBrilliant minds of the recent vampire genre make some transformations to the classic vampires. Vanessa Farquharson compared vampires from the classic Nosferatu to the HBO‘s True Blood series, Twilight and CW’s Vampire Diaries and looked at who stuck with the rules and how the vampires differ from one another.

1st Rule – You can only become a vampire if a vampire will bite your neck and draws blood.

In True Blood, Twilight, Vampire Diaries and Nosferatu, this is a big yes but, there are some things to consider. In both True Blood and Vampire Diaries, you must also drink the vampire‘s blood to be turned, while in Twilight, you have to be infected with the vampire‘s venom.

2nd Rule – Vampires can be killed with a wooden stake.

In True Blood and Vampire Diaries, vampires can be killed with wooden stakes. In addition, pure silver can weaken the vampires in True Blood. But in Nosferatu, only sunlight can kill vampires while in Twilight, they must be torn up and burned.

3rd Rule – Vampires wear black capes.

This is like for the oldies so only vampires in Nosferatu wear those! In True Blood, Pam, Eric and Bill are commended for their great fashion sense.

4th Rule – Vampire sleep in coffins.

In True Blood, Bill has a secret hiding place under the floor boards of his closet where he crawl into to sleep during the day.  With the vampires of Nosferatu’s generation, they sleep in coffins and from them without bending their legs. In Twilight, the vampires do not sleep and in Vampire Diaries, the vampires aren’t shown sleeping.

5th Rule – Vampires can be repelled by garlic, holy water and crucifixes.

This doesn’t apply in True Blood, Twilight, Vampire Diaries and it’s not even seen in Nosferatu as well. But Bill‘s does get irritated with garlic. Remember the bathtub scene in Season 1 when Bill told Sookie about it?!

6th Rule – Vampires must be invited in before the can enter a house.

This works for both True Blood and Vampire Diaries. But in Twilight and Nosferatu, vampires can just easily walk right in.

7th Rule – Vampires can’t stand sunlight.

Sunlight can kill vampires in True Blood and with Nosferatu. But in Twilight, sunlight can make vampires sparkle. While in Vampire Diaries, they can enjoy the scorching sun only if they wear protective jewelry.

8th Rule – Vampires have fangs.

With True Blood, Vampire Diaries and Nosferatu the vampires have then but in Twilight, fangs aren’t visible. [Editor’s Note:  It seems the original source has the incorrect information about fangs between Twilight and Vampire Diaries.]

9th Rule – Vampires can fly.

In Twilight, Vampire Diaries and with Nosferatu they do not have capacity to fly however in True Blood onl;y certain vampires it seem can fly such as Eric however not Bill.  In all four mediums they can move at high speeds, and leap high.

10th Rule – Vampires can transform into bats.

True Blood, Twilight, Vampire Diaries and Nosferatu vampires cannot transform into bats. But in Vampire Diaries, a character named Damon can turn into a crow.

Vampire Genre Sells Big

November 21, 2009

E25HBOsideVampires are everywhere nowadays – in books, movies, TV shows, video games, and arts. People have been hooked to the vampire saga and 21st century’s hit offering are the following: True Blood, the Twilight saga and the latest TV show to come on board, Vampire Diaries. Since we are all going crazy about vampires, let’s try to go beyond the stories and count the money that’s been raked by the entertainment industry.

In the movie department, the first installment of the Twilight series pulled in $380 million at the global box office and an additional $168 million in U.S. DVD sales.  Now if the last installment of the Twilight series, The Twilight Saga: New Moon, will have the same result, the Twilight series can be estimated to be a $500 million-a-year movie franchise alone thanks to the fans of Twilight!

In books, vampire stories can be seen as a $100 million annual business for book publishers. It has been reported that the woman behind Twilight, Stephenie Meyer, has sold 30 million copies of her books in both hardcover and paperback in the United States. Our beloved Charlaine Harris ranks second with 6 million copies sold for her Sookie Stackhouse novels including setting a record for at one point this summer, holding seven of the top-25 spots for mass-market fiction in The New York Times bestseller list. Between hardcover and paperback, both Stephanie Meyers and Charlaine Harris have sold a combined total of $432 million worth of books.

In TV shows Alan Ball‘s hit HBO TV vampire series True Blood reigns supreme.  HBO’s True Blood has become the network’s most successful series since The Sopranos, reaching over 10 million viewers when you include DVR watchers. Although HBO has not published reports of the shows earnings estimates based on the shows high ratings and DVD sales place it in the realm of generating $50 million-a-year. On the other hand, CW’s Vampire Diaries has 4.3 million viewers – the highest for the network generting an estimated $20 million a year.  Therefore combining the two vampire shows on television it is to an estimated $70 million a year business.

Then, there’s the vampire video games share which is worth $12.5 million yearly. And since the Twilight stars are featured regularly on tabloids, it gives vampires a quarter of the credit for newsstand sales and that’s $21.5 million in just a single year. Also, then based on Halloween vampire costumes’ estimated worth of $62.5 million each October the entire vampire genre including, movies, books, TV shows, video games, magazine sales and Halloween costumes totals to $771.5 million annually!

Now that’s a lot of money to bite into!

Charlaine Harris Talks About Her Books And True Blood

October 27, 2009

Charlaine HarrisCharlaine Harris, the gifted author of the Sookie Stackhouse novels in which the hit HBO True Blood series is based upon, discussed her heroine Sookie, the real-life romance of Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer, and watching her books come to life.

When asked about the Sookie Stackhouse Mysteries, Charlaine Harris said she decided to write a book combining mystery, science fiction, and romance–clinched on not sticking to the rules.

She also admitted that she shares certain traits with Sookie,

“Well, we’re both loyal, but she’s a lot braver than I am. She’s pretty much like I wish I was. She’s polite but direct. I like to think that’s me, too.”

And to top that, she feels a pleasant sense of obligation to the people who brought her stories to life, particularly Anna Paquin (Sookie) and Stephen Moyer (Bill) especially now that the duo are getting married which she felt strangely responsible for.

As for the show itself, Charlaine felt proud and excited about seeing the town she created come to life, fondly exclaiming:

“I had lunch in Merlotte’s in one of the booths. With Alan.”

When asked for details about the third season, Charlaine simply said:

“The third season will be the third book, but the show may go off on its own at any point.”

Though crossroads may be difficult in person’s life, for Charlaine the crossroads she experienced helped create Sookie, Bill, Sam, and all the other characters we love in Bon Temps. Furthermore, the books have spawned a hit show on HBO, causing a new mass of fans for Charlaine’s books and characters.

If you are a fan and interested in Charlaine Harris, she will attend the Houston Chronicle Book and Author Dinner on November 1 at Hilton Americas-Houston, 1600 Lamar, Houston Texas.  If you wish to be at the 30th Book and Author Dinner, visit www.chron.com for more details and ticket information.

It ultimately reflects something I care passionately about, protecting animals. Plus, it’s gorgeous. I’m still a woman.”
