About True Blood: The Complete Series
Thanks to a Japanese scientist’s invention of synthetic blood, vampires have progressed from legendary monsters to fellow citizens overnight. And while humans have been safely removed from the menu, many remain apprehensive about these creatures “coming out of the coffin.” In the small Louisiana town of Bon Temps, local waitress Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin) is open-minded about the integration of vampires – particularly when it comes to Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer), a handsome 173-year old living up the road. But at the service of Bill’s less virtuous vampire associates, Sookie is drawn into a series of catastrophes that will put their love to the test.

About True Blood: The Complete Seventh Season
This year, a season-opening battle between raging Hep-Vamps and their Bon Temps prey sets the stage for a season-long series of hair-raising denouements for Sookie, Bill, Eric (Alexander Skarsgård), Jason (Ryan Kwanten), Sam (Sam Trammell), Alcide (Joe Manganiello), Tara (Rutina Wesley) and their human/vampire allies and adversaries. As we’ll see, some of True Blood’s most beloved figures will meet cruel fates, while others will cheat death (true and otherwise) to forge happily-ever-after relationships that will leave fans surprised and, ultimately, satisfied. What will happen to your favorite True Blood character?

True Blood Cookbook Creator Marcelle Bienvenu Visits Louisiana – VIDEO

True Blood: Eats, Drinks, and Bites from Bon Temps Author Talks in Lake Charles, Louisiana

Marcelle Bienvenu recently visited Lake Charles, Louisiana to chat with fans and sign books to introduce her newest cookbook, True Blood: Eats, Drinks, and Bites from Bon Temps.

Having written Who’s Your Mama, Are You Catholic and Can You Make A Roux?,  Cajun Cooking For Beginners, and having a regular food column in the New Orleans Times-Picayune since 1984, Bienvenu was an expert on Louisiana-style cooking. However, when first contacted to make the cookbook, she didn’t know much about the show and all of its supernatural drama.

How to solve the problem? Bienvenu sat down and watched every single episode and took note of every mention of the Louisiana cooking.

Bienvenu knows a lot about food, having cooked with esteemed chefs like Emeril Lagasse, Paul Prudhomme, and Ella Brennan at the Commander’s Palace in New Orleans. She can even tell where a person’s from by their gumbo:

“In Baton Rouge, the roux is lighter,” she said. “Along the coast, they have seafood and on the prairies, it’s chicken and sausage.”

Thanks to her True Blood research, however, the HBO show’s cookbook is now complete with 75 Louisiana-approved recipes with clever names any True Blood fan might recognize. Some of Bienvenu’s favorites include, “Stake and Eggs,” “Tequila Moonrise” and “Wanted: Dead or Alive.”

Having first started cooking as a child, Bienvenu expressed her life-long love for the craft:

“I’ve been eating my way through life since.”

Announcing the Official Cookbook for HBO’s Hit Vampire Drama:

Truebies and talented cooks rejoice! The official True Blood cookbook will be available to ship on August 29! While the specifics of the book remain as scarce as a vampire in daylight, it has been revealed that the 85 recipes included are centered around authentic Southern comfort food. Maybe there’ll be one called “Ya’ll Gon’ Wish You Ain’t Ate That Corn Bread.” Oh, and another called “Gran’s Pie.” The possibilities are almost as endless as a vampire’s life span. Stick around, folks, I got a million of ’em.

The book also contains 150 full page photos from the show to “give fans a big taste of Bon Temps.” The book is written by Gianna Sobol, an associate producer on the show, and the one and only Mr. Alan Ball. The recipes are by the self-proclaimed Queen of Cajun Cooking Marcelle Bienvenu.

You can pre-order a copy at the HBO Store website. It ships August 29th, just in time for the season 5 finale!

True Blood Season 2 DVD Review

In advance of the release of True Blood, Season 2, on DVD May 25, the-trades.com reviewed the the series and the five disc set. I won’t recount the entire season here, as most of us have already seen it, but I will focus on the site’s review and the DVD set’s features.

The-Trades.com cites their highlights of the season, including:

1. Sookie‘s discovery of another telepath in Dallas

2. Eric‘s opinion of human children just before asking Sophie-Anne a favor

3. Bill‘s reunion with his maker, Lorena

While the site gave a very thorough and concise rundown of Season 2, I think it fell short when recounting Season 2 hits.

There were several well acted arcs and scenes beyond those noted above:

1. Jason‘s slow descent into the Fellowship of the Sun and his interactions with Steve, Sarah, and Luke (who could forget when Sarah tells him that God wants them to be together or when she tells him they must confess to Steve?)

2. Sam‘s shift in front of the deranged, brain-washed townsfolk (and Jason and Andy‘s reactions)

3. Sookie‘s blood bond with Eric, and the effect it has on her, in addition to her affinity to and compassion for Godric

There are too many more to recount! Luckily, the Season 2 disc set will let you relive your favorite scenes again and again. In addition to all 12 episdoes, the set also includes commentary on episodes 2, 7, 8, 10, 11, and 12 from all the major players including Anna Paquin, Stephen Moyer, Ryan Kwanten, Rutina Wesley, Sam Trammell, Nelsan Ellis, and Alexander Skarsgard. Bonus features also include Fellowship of the Sun sermons designed to incite the vampire hate in you led by either Reverend Steve Newlin or his wife, Sarah; and, “The Vampire Report” news magazine covering all current events involving vampires with a commercial for the American Vampire League and public service announcements geared toward vampires (have you been tested for Hepatitis D?). All in all, a well conceived season with a series of bonus features designed to enhance the existing episode content and further your entrenchment into the supernatural world of Sookie Stackhouse.

Season 2 will be released on Standard DVD, Blu-Ray disc, and in digital download format on May 25 and will be available from the HBO Store, Amazon, and iTunes.

Ryan Kwanten Not Worried About Other Vampire Stories

jason-stackhouse-ryan-kwanten-season-21Everywhere you look these days there is something on about vampires. Twilight’s sequel, the film Priest began filming last month, and the CW premiered The Vampire Diaries last week. Is there reason to believe that the genre might have a backlash or become over saturated? Not according to Ryan Kwanten, the actor who plays Jason Stackhouse in HBO’s True Blood. Ryan was recently in Chicago and made an appearance at the Enclave  and on Friday hosted, alongside True Blood co-star Nelsan Ellis,  the “Dusk Until Dawn” fashion show for of clothing boutique Akira’s.  Ryan took time out to speak with .

“Personally, I don’t [worry], purely due to the creative forces that are behind our show,” said Ryan. “We knew we were part of something special before the fans did,” He added. “But to hear the fans and critics speak out and watch the show in ways we couldn’t imagine, even an optimist couldn’t have predicted it.”

The season finale has aired and will returned for a third season in June. True Blood has been pulling in HBO’s best numbers since The Sopranos. On the August 23rd show alone, there was an impressive 5.3 million viewers.

What makes the show so popular? The creativity they are allowed to do on a cable channel. If True Blood was aired on a network television channel, Kwanten says the show would be 25 minutes long, due to the nudity, violence, and sex. He said True Blood can push topics in a way that network TV can’t. In the first two seasons we have seen racism, homophobia, drug addiction, and orgies.

Is Ryan Kwanten a fan of the vampire genre?

“I’m into a good story,” He says. “But I’m not answering your question.”

Aw, come on Ryan we’d love to know. Wouldn’t it be interesting if he began dating a vampire in a future season?

Inside Fashion Secrets from True Blood’s Cast and Crew

pamela-love-true-blood-talon-necklace.jpg
Whether you’re a female fan swooning over anyone of the gorgeous men from Bon Temps, with or without a beating heart, or a guy who secretly wishes one of the sweet wholesome girls from Bon Temps were your neighbor, have you ever caught yourself thinking “ooh, cute outfit”? I am guilty on a few occasions, since shopping is a slight weakness of mine, and who doesn’t love an adorable sundress or cardigan? I even hunted down a cute pair of plaid shorts because Sookie looked so cute when she wore them with a simple white tank and denim jacket. Ever since I saw Jessica in that adorable yellow sundress I have been on a shopping mission.  I feel the more the sundresses the better, but where can I find them? Joyann King from “W” magazine sat with Deborah Ann Woll, who plays the sweet, and sometimes-mischievous Jessica, to get the inside scoop on the wardrobe, drum roll please: Wal-Mart! Yes! Finally a store that is perfect for all of us who like to look adorable and chic but also work off a budget, like myself. The shows stylist, Audrey Fisher, feels the characters would not be as convincing with down home southern ladies from Louisiana dressed from head to toe in designer duds, and I agree! Perhaps that is why we are drawn to the fashion of the show, it is accessible to everyone. Fisher’s trick to making each outfit suit the actor or actress is to tailor the clothes to fit their body type.  Another wardrobe piece which generated a lot of buzz the morning after Season 2, Episode 4, “Shake and Fingerpop”, was the cardigan Sookie was wearing as she descended the steps of Anubis Air’s aircraft. That cardigan was from “Forever 21”.  You may remember Bill shopping in “Forever 21” for Jessica and running into Eric?  Perhaps Bill thought that cardigan was simply charming and brought Sookie home a little gift as well? If you are lucky, you may still be able to find it on their website, www.forever21.com, for a mere $25.00.

jessica_and_hoytOf course, this article would not be complete without mentioning Eric Northman’s style, as well as the necklace he is always seen wearing, which has become a central point to his casual wardrobe in Season 2. During the first season when Eric (Alexander Skarsgard) made his appearance he was dressed in black from head to toe which I think added to his demeanor and the mystique that surrounded his character. He was dark and intimidating, exuding confidence.  With Season Two’s premiere, Eric dropped the leather and has gone for a more laid back, everyday style with his jogging suits and flip flops.  They just magnify Eric’s confidence and arrogance and make him the classic, quintessential bad boy! He seems more approachable, and perhaps even like the guy next door (I can dream)! Yet we can’t forget that even in his track suit he is still capable of ripping your arm off if he is provoked. Yet he still looks sexy  in a racer-back tank, track pants and flip flops. The necklace that Eric is always wearing, with his tracksuit zipper ever so slightly down, is from a very talented jeweler named Pamela Love. Jessica Iredale of W magazine sat with the designer to ask her what she thought the fascination was with her pieces.

You use a lot of claws and bones and bird skulls in your jewelry. What’s the appeal?

“I never liked jewelry growing up. My mom was very feminine woman and she wore hearts and pink stones, but I was always sort of a tomboy. For me, the appeal is being able to wear jewelry but not have it be prissy”

Why do you think that other people are so into it right now?

I think fashion is definitely going through a very tough phase. The popularity of Alexander Wang and Rodarte really show that there’s more a more gothic or rock and roll, more morbid sort of curiosity in fashion right now. I think that translates into jewelry as well.

Speaking of tough, one of your pieces has been a regular on HBO’s “True Blood”, this season.

Yeah. One of the costume designers bought it at retail and put it on one of the vampires (Eric Northman, played by Alexander Skarsgard). I guess it became a really focal thing. When I finally saw season two, I was like, “Wow, he’s always wearing it!” And he’s always in that weird track outfit wearing the claw, which is totally strange. I think he’s the hottest guy ever.”

And you’ve since been working with HBO?

The costume designer contacted us and was like, “ We want more jewelry for next season.” Then the marketing department contacted us and said, “The necklace is really focal. We want to see it on (www.hbo.com)”. They’ve sold out, like, three times. Now we’re getting a lot of interest from different vampire type things. The vampire trend is really weird, but “True Blood” is the only one that I actually think is cool.

I couldn’t agree with Pamela more that Eric does make that tracksuit and necklace combination completely hot and sexy and has truly grown into his own unique style. Another unique piece of jewelry is the “True Blood” fang pendant, that I love.  It is made by Stephen Einhorn and can be found at www.stepheneinhorn.com. The pendant was made for both the cast and crew and both Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer are fans of the pendant and own one. The pendant is made of sterling silver shaped into fangs which form a heart.  It is truly unique and I admire it. It would be a great accessory in my jewelry box or worn for a night out along with Pamela Love’s piece. [Editor’s note:  A special thank you to our dear reader, Sherry for contacting Stephen Einhorn and finding out that the price for the fang pendant is 137 British pounds plus 10.95 British pounds for shipping.  Depending on the exchange rate for the day it can range around $242 U.S.].  You can find Pamela’s pendant at www.hbo.com, while supplies last and inquire on Stephen Einhorn’s site in regard to purchasing the fang pendant if your heart desires!

I think the characters look chic each week and I do find myself wondering where, or how, I can get that look. I am so glad to know that almost everything worn on the show is affordable and easily accessible thanks to Deborah Ann Woll letting us in on a few fashion secrets. And thanks to Pamela Love for sitting with “W” magazine’s Jessica Iredale and sharing her artistic insights and where we can find the gorgeous necklace Eric wears.
