Charlaine Harris on True Blood and the Last Sookie Stackhouse Book

Author Discusses the HBO Differences:

Charlaine Harris and Sam Trammell chat at the bar in Merlotte'sRecently, FearNet got to talk to Charlaine Harris about the remainder of her Southern Vampire Mysteries novels (the books that HBO’s True Blood are based on). She also talks about how much she likes the changes Alan Ball has made to her characters in his show.

While Harris feels there are certainly differences between her Sookieverse and Alan Ball’s, she appears to like what she sees. She believes that Ball simply emphasizes different aspects of the same world. And she is glad for this:

“It would bore me to tears if it were exactly like the books. And I hate to bored, ever. I have a really low boredom threshold.”

As for characters, she believes that Sookie is a lot angrier on TV than how she portrays the blonde waitress in her books. She surmises that this may be what makes her more attractive to the True Blood audience.

On the subject of characters, while we have heard Harris say before that she had wished that she had come up with the character of Jessica, since she enjoys watching her so much, FearNet asked if there were any characters she liked less on TV. While no names were mentioned by Harris, she did mention that she loved what Lafayette has become. Since he loses his life so early on in the books, she puts it down to Nelsan Ellis (the actor who plays Lafayette Reynolds) being so fabulous at what he does, as being the reason his character was saved in the TV series.

Charlaine Harris was also asked whether she thought the TV series, True Blood, was now affecting her story line for the remainder of the books. Since there are only two more to go, this was an interesting question, to which she replied:

“Not really so much because I’m so far ahead. But every now and then I wonder if I’m in danger of being confused between the two. Sometimes when I write characters, I think, ‘Wait a minute –- am I writing TV Sookie or book Sookie?’ Then I think, ‘Let’s get back to our roots and remember what we’re doing, young lady.’ So it is possible for me to be influenced I guess, but I didn’t think so until real recently. So I think it’s probably best I’m winding it up then, before I get really confused.” [Laughs.]

With the next book only months away from release, how many of you prefer the books over the TV series, or vice versa? Make sure you let us know your favorite!

Charlaine Harris Prepares for Life After Sookie Stackhouse

All Good Things Must Come to an End:

Charlaine Harris, author of Sookie Stackhouse novelsCharlaine Harris has spent many years filling the lives of millions of readers with the story of Sookie Stackhouse, and the love triangle that has ensued between Sookie, Eric, and Bill.  A story that inspired writer/director Alan Ball to create the HBO hit True Blood, based on the life of Sookie Stackhouse. We now know that Harris plans to close this love story at the conclusion of book 13 (we are two away).  And though I am sure this will sadden the millions of Team Bill Vs. Team Eric fans, the old saying “all good things must come to an end” comes to mind. And when one door closes another invariably opens, which is the case for one of America’s favorite authors. Harris has already set her sights on a new trilogy called Cemetery Girl

Life After Sookie Stackhouse

Charlaine Harris will team up with author Christopher Golden and illustrator Don Kramer, to bring to life this new venture. In a press release Harris revealed that “Since Chris has more experience in the graphic novel field than I do, we agreed to team up for my first ever collaboration. This is an exciting venture for both of us.”

The core of the story is about a girl who suffers from amnesia, while living in a cemetery, in search for her true identity. The first of the trilogy is set to be released in 2012, and will allow Harris to begin perfecting her written craft in the realm of the Graphic Novel arena.

In  the meantime, Sookie Stackhouse fans will have to begin preparing for the foregone conclusion that the love triangle is destined to end… sooner than we may want… with one lingering question — will Sookie choose Bill, Eric, or herself?

New Sookie Stackhouse Book Releases For Charlaine Harris

Sookie Stackhouse Companion and Home Improvements:

Cover artwork for The Sookie Stackhouse Companion by Charlaine HarrisFans of the Sookie Stackhouse books by author Charlaine Harris will be excited to hear that there are not one, but TWO new Sookie books coming out this month!

The first was already released on August 2 and goes by the title of Home Improvements (Undead Edition). It is an entirely new short story based on the Southern Vampire characters. This story is one of many in this collaboration between authors on the theme of ‘home improvements.’ Apparently, Sookie finds more than she bargained for in the tale “If I Had a Hammer”, when she helps Sam renovate Tara’s new house. In fact, they find a bloody hammer in the walls!

The second Charlaine Harris book will be released on August 30, and is entitled “The Sookie Stackhouse Companion”. This book  includes a new Sookie novella as well as an interview with Alan Ball. It also lets you tour Bon Temps, get the best recipes in the area (including some by Caroline Bellefleur) and test your knowledge of the Sookieverse with trivia questions.

Both books can be purchased from all good book stores as well as online via retailers such as Amazon.

Charlaine Harris Confirms Completion of 12th Book

Nearing the end of the Sookie Stackhouse Series:

Charlaine Harris, author of Sookie Stackhouse novels (credit: NY Times)According to Charlaine Harriswebsite/blog she has officially completed the 12th novel in the Sookie Stackhouse Series!  I know that I’m not the only one out there who is ecstatic to hear this news!  Don’t get too excited yet though, because the newest book, Deadlocked, still has to pass through the hands of her editor, as well as several others who read, edit, and make suggestions to her before she makes the final changes and it is published.  I personally have not read the 11th book yet, because I have decided to put it on the backburner until it’s closer to time for the next book (Deadlocked) to be released.  The suspense is killing me, though!   So, how many of you guys are looking forward to the release of the next book?  I am a HUGE fan of True Blood and didn’t begin to read the books until after the completion of Season 3.  Once I began to read the books though, I was completely unable to put them down!  As crazy as this may sound, I read the first ten books of the series within about 3 weeks (and I hate reading most of the time)!  So if you haven’t taken the time to read the books that True Blood is based on, please do so because you will not regret it!

How many of you have read some or all of the Sookie Stackhouse Novels?  Which was your favorite so far?

Any thoughts on Deadlocked?  What about storylines that you would like to see come into play in the newest book that haven’t yet happened? (Please be sure to put SPOILER at the top of your comment if anything included is a possible spoiler from one of the other novels.)  Spill your thoughts below!

Charlaine Harris’ Plans for a New Graphic Novel Series

Graphic Novels Next On Charlaine Harris’ List!

Charlaine Harris, author of The Southern Vampire MysteriesCharlaine Harris, author of The Southern Vampire Mysteries aka: The Sookie Stackhouse Novels, has recently spoken up about her plans to create a new 3-book series of graphic novels! Harris revealed:

“I’m going to be working on a graphic novel next. I’m very excited about that. It’s called Cemetery Girl with Christopher Golden, and it’s a very exciting opportunity.”

The article also states that Harris first considered creating this storyline as a traditional novel, but decided to put it on hold until the horror and fantasy author, Christopher Golden (Hellboy/Buffy the Vampire Slayer), convinced her that it would be an excellent fit for a graphic novel series.  The graphic novel series will be centered on a woman who finds herself living in a cemetery with no recollection of her past, but she has a clear sense of some sort of mysterious burden hanging over her head.  No artist has joined Harris and Golden in their creation of the series yet, but Harris added:

“The publishing company that I’ve been with, Penguin, is going into graphic novels, so it’s a great book with a very original concept.”

I have never really taken an interest in graphic novels, but with Charlaine Harris on board, I’m game!  With as much as she has accomplished in her past writing escapades, you know that a graphic novel series will be just as amazing as the rest of her work!  What do you all think about Charlaine’s idea for a new series?  A woman+a cemetery+amnesia+worry is bound to equal a thrilling new series!  Any thoughts on the topic?  Be sure to leave us your comments below!

Alan and Charlaine Discuss the Death of a Fairy

‘True Blood’: Alan Ball and Charlaine Harris discuss Sunday’s shocking death of [SPOILER] —

Statements from Ball and Harris

Entertainment Weekly’s EW.com has spoken exclusively to True Blood executive producer Alan Ball and Sookie Stackhouse series author Charlaine Harris about the death of Claudine in this past Sunday’s episode. Many fans of Harris’ original novels were surprised by the death scene, which doesn’t occur until much later in the book series. But there’s more left to see in Sookie’s fairy world:

“After everything that was going on with the fairies in the first episode, I think we wanted to sort of put a pin in that, but obviously it’s not over,” says Ball. “I felt it would have more impact if it was someone we knew as opposed to just a random fairy.”

And Harris is okay with the change.

“If [Ball] can be gracious to me, I can certainly be gracious enough to wait and see where he’s going.”

Video: Science Fiction Book Club Interviews Charlaine Harris

 From Sookie’s Creator:

Charlaine Harris Science Fiction Book Club InterviewIn a most charming interview with Senior Editor Rome Quezada of the Science Fiction Book Club, Charlaine Harris discusses the Sookie Stackhouse series, Alan Ball, and books & authors that should be on everyone’s “To Read” list.

Mr. Quezada wishes the Sookie series a Happy 10th Anniversary, to which Mrs. Harris graciously gives thanks, and they proceed to talk about its amazing success.  Saying she lives in a small town, Harris actually feels “divorced” from all the hoopla.  It didn’t hit her until recently, when she received a wall plaque highlighting all of her bestsellers, how amazing this whole thing really is.

The astounding success of the HBO show True Blood has increased foreign book sales, and Harris has enjoyed reading e-mails from all over the world that tell her how much her books are enjoyed.  She finds the demographic abroad to be slightly different from that in the States, sharing that it surprised her to find that in Poland, for example, most of her fans were teenagers.  She thought to herself at one point, “It’s just so strange to me to think of people enjoying the adventures of a small-town Southern barmaid”.

When asked what, if anything, she has hoped to accomplish by writing the Southern Vampire Mysteries, Harris responds:

“First and foremost, I hope I’m writing a good adventure story, because that’s my goal.  But I’m also trying to say something about exclusionism.  I’m no preacher but I like to put in a good word for accepting people as they are.”

Discussing Alan Ball and True Blood, Harris says she does think, “…they got the spirit of the books exactly right”.  She feels Alan Ball, being a fellow Southerner, “gets” her, and the “mixture of comedy and horror” that her writing expresses.  All in all, she just likes him and thinks he’s a genius.  As do we all!

Harris shares with us some of her current favorite authors and books:

Justin Cronin – Passage

Patrick Rothfuss – Kingkiller Chronicles: The Name of the Wind and The Wise Man’s Fear

Joan Frances Turner – Dust

And the unreleased Ready Player One by Ernest Cline, for which she wrote a positive blurb: “This non-gamer loved every page of Ready Player One.”

Watch the video, and see for yourself what a classy, intelligent Southern Belle Charlaine Harris is.

Thanks for the scoop, John! Remember, Truebies, we welcome your contributions!

Charlaine Harris Talks to a Full House

Break a Leg!

Charlaine Harris w/Mysterious Galaxy staff Credit - Bob MorrisCharlaine Harris appeared recently at Mysterious Galaxy to a full house. Fans of the Sookie Stackhouse series packed the book store to hear the author speak and to have their books signed. What lucky San Diegans!

In the Beginning

Charlaine Harris has been writing for the last 3 decades. In the beginning she wrote poetry, ghostly stories, and then later on, mysteries. She decided to write the Sookie Stackhouse books mainly because she wanted to go in a new direction and wanted to make sure the publishing house would continue to support her books. Her thinking:

“It would be fun to write about a very down-home young woman who was dating a vampire.”

Her 11th book in this series, Dead Reckoning, which was released in May, seems to still be creating waves in the fan base and is still hugely popular.

The HBO True Blood series is largely based on the books by Charlaine Harris mixed with Alan Ball‘s genius mind. The new season of True Blood started just over a week ago on June 26, and it has fans on fire with enthusiasm for this season!

Q&A with Charlaine Harris

Sookie’s Creator Answers Some Burning Questions:

Charlaine Harris (credit Sigrid Estrada)You should all know by now that our favorite TV show, HBO‘s True Blood, is based on Charlaine Harris‘s Sookie Stackhouse novels.  But you may not know that book 11 in the series, Dead Reckoning, came out today!  The ladies over at “Girls in the Stacks”, a book review website, were lucky enough to land a short & sweet interview with Mrs. Harris.

She lets us know that the end is nigh — for the Sookie novels.  The grand total will be thirteen books.  She never thought there’d be so many, but she’s always coming up with new ideas.  Concerning the last book, she’s had a certain scene in her head for years.  Does she know what’s next?  Not really.  She does have many projects in the beginning stages, but she hasn’t picked one yet.

Was she planning on killing Bill?  Yes, that rumor is true… but it applies to book 9, Dead and Gone.  *Spoiler ahead, please stop reading if you haven’t read the book, but plan to!*

“Actually, during the scene in the hospital when the fairies are coming to kill everyone inside, I wrote a great death scene for Bill because I love to write grand death scenes. But when I thought about it, I wanted to keep Bill around because I like him. My editor weighed in on Bill’s survival, too.”

Is the show too graphic for her tastes?  She admits that it is more shocking seeing bare flesh vs. reading about it, but has confidence in the show’s creator, Alan Ball.  She likes what he’s done so far in capturing “the spirit of the books”.

Even though Mrs. Harris is becoming “quite a brand”, she is still in awe of her success.  She never saw it coming, and certainly hasn’t let it get to her head.  Neither has her family:

“My family is taking it in stride. We live much the same as we did before.”

Kudos to her family for remaining humble.  We wish Mrs. Harris success in all her future endeavors, which will no doubt keep us entertained for a long time to come!

Interview with a Vampire Author

Walk a Mile in Her Shoes:

Charlaine Harris (Credit: Sigrid Estrada)Charlaine Harris, author of the wildly famous Sookie Stackhouse novels, was recently interviewed by Savvy Sugar.  We get the scoop on what a typical day is like for her, and what inspires and motivates her.

On a normal day, she likes to be in her office by 8 a.m.  Writing six pages takes her into the early afternoon, at which point she takes care of other things, then reads for a bit until around 4.  Then it’s time to make dinner!

Have you ever wondered about the genesis of the characters and the series?  Savvy Sugar asks, “How did it all start?”:

“I was writing my first book while I was taking a writing course at the University of Missouri St. Louis, the only year I lived in St. Louis. The teacher of the class was Shannon Ravenel, later top editor at Algonquin Press. Then, she had just quit work at Houghton Mifflin. She liked what I wrote for the class well enough to recommend me to an editor there. My career would not have supported me at all until the past 10 years; very fortunately, my husband was delighted to stake me until I began earning. I realize this is a luxury and that I was most fortunate.”

When asked what her motivation and inspiration is, Mrs. Harris answers frankly:

“I am motivated by a looming contract and the desire to get paid. Inspiration is a nebulous word; I write because I have ideas, and I have ideas because I’m a writer. I have to hope that people will want to share the story I want to tell.”

What does she have to say about her next book?

“I hope that readers who have followed me through the previous Sookie books will enjoy Dead Reckoning. I worked really hard on it, and I’m always nervous when a new book hits the shelves.”

If you’d like to hear her advice to writers, and see what she has to say about Sookie, read the full interview here.

It’s amazing how our favorite pop culture phenomenon came from such a humble spirit.  We love Mrs. Harris’s imagination, and can’t wait to get our hands on book 11, Dead Reckoning!  Can you believe it comes out this week?

Charlaine Harris Honored at Straight for Equality Awards

Author Awarded for Fair Representation in Books

Charlaine HarrisThe author of the Sookie Stackhouse novels, Charlaine Harris, was honored at the 3rd Annual Straight for Equality Awards. She received the Straights for Equality in Literature award. It was the first time the award in literature was given out.

As reported on daemonsbooks.com, Charlaine made comments on her blog about the award.

“When I began to write the Sookie series, over a decade ago, I made a conscious decision to parallel the struggle of vampires with the struggle of gay people to gain basic rights. I also realized that a lot people wouldn’t care about the subtext of the books, and that’s okay, too. I’m not trying to preach. I just want to make a point in my own way.”

Straight for Equality is an educational group promoting awareness and equality for gays, lesbians, bi-sexual, and transgender people. And while rights and acceptance have come a long way since Harris started writing the series, we still have a ways to go. Other honorees include Rosie Perez, wrestling coach Hudson Taylor, and MetLife. The awards were given out on March 14th.

Charlaine Harris to Dabble in Video Games

The Author Talks to CNN About Her Next Big Project

A screen shot from Charlaine Harris' new video game, Dying for DaylightWe all know Charlaine Harris as the author of the Sookie Stackhouse book series and the inspiration behind our favorite TV drama, ‘True Blood‘. Soon enough, Harris will have a new following in the form of video gamers. Her new project, a downloadable PC puzzler called “Dying for Daylight” is being produced by iPlay and stars a wise-cracking fashionista vampire named Dahliawho is searching for a potion that will allow vamps to survive in the sunlight. Hmm, sounds like a certain vampire King might like the sound of this.

Something to Sink Her Teeth Into

Since Harris recently admitted that the Sookie book series will soon come to an end, possibly after book 12, she’s been looking for additional ways to satisfy her creative urges. For hardcore Harris fans who will no doubt delve into the game world of “Dying for Daylight,” you’ll definitely recognize Dahlia Lynley-Chivers, who has appeared in several of Harris’ short stories. Harris is excited about going into the gaming industry, claiming “it’s a fresh and fun market for many writers; the chance to do something different is always interesting.”

A screen shot from Charlaine Harris' new video game, Dying for DaylightA lot of authors have dabbled in video games – Stephen King, James Patterson, Michael Crichton – but not just any author can pull it off. Horror, mystery, science fiction, and crime book genres seem to make the more successful video game adaptations, so Harris certainly fits right in. When asked whether more authors will make the transition into video games, Harris said:

“I’m sure more will, simply because it’s another way to publicize your books, after all. And it’s a fresh and fun market for many writers; the chance to do something different is always interesting. I’m hoping that people who enjoy playing the game will decide to read my books, naturally. This is a chance to reach out to a whole new audience.”

Harris has revealed that she’s not the most savvy gamer and has gotten stuck when navigating through “Dying for Daylight,” not truly knowing what next step she should make. Her gaming skills may not be up to snuff, but her writing skills certainly are. Her fiction has enjoyed increased interest from game companies, television networks, and comic book publishers, with another of Harris’ characters, Harper Connelly, getting the graphic novel treatment soon, as well as CBS’ interest in the Connelly mysteries with an eye toward developing them into a prime-time series. Needless to say, Harris’ beloved Sookie series may be coming to an end, but her career definitely is not!

Charlaine Harris Says Sookie Stackhouse Series Will End

Now Leaving Bon Temps

Dead ReckoningThe book series that started it all, the Southern Vampire Mysteries, will be coming to an end after two additional books. The next addition to the series, Dead Reckoning is due out in May.

Sookie Stackhouse’s creator Charlaine Harris expressed to the LA Times Blog, Hero Complex that she is ready to write something else. Since HBO began airing True Blood two years ago Harris has had little time to focus on other projects due to publicity engagements related to the vampire show.

Worlds Beyond Sookie

But fear not fans of Charlaine’s work! Just because she’s ready to leave Bon Temps in the world of fiction doesn’t mean she’s ready to give up the vampires. Another female vampire by the name of Dahlia Lynley-Chivers has recently come into the spotlight. Having originally appeared in some of Harris’ short stories, Dahlia is now the star of her own game entitled Dying for Daylight which is now available on iPlay.com. The game centers on her quest to find the secret of how her kind can walk in the sunlight and how she has to search all over New Orleans to find it. To those Truebies who have seen season three of True Blood in its entirety, the premise may sound familiar.

Computer games aren’t the only things Harris’ characters are appearing in. IDW released the True Blood comic series last year and a volume of the first six issues came out this past week. Harper Connelly, another one of Charlaine’s heroines will also be brought into the comic fold and in addition CBS is looking into giving the character her own TV series.

On True Blood

Speaking of TV series, how does Charlaine feel about True Blood? While she did admit to being a bit overwhelmed by the show’s sometimes graphic (and sexual) nature she is proud of the series and the actors:

“I think all the actors are very fun,” she said. “I think Alan’s genius lies in picking the right person for the right role. They’re all talented and doing a great job. There are some plot lines that have surprised me, but I know that they know where they’re going — I just don’t know because it’s not where I went. So I can only wait to see what’s going to develop.”

Well Charlaine we can’t wait to see what your next project will be and like you we’re also excited to see where True Blood goes next!
