Video: Season 1-3 Re-Cap of HBO’s True Blood

Take a Look Back at the First Three Seasons:

Looking Back at the First Three SeasonsBon Temps, Louisiana is just your typical small town right? WRONG! Filled with vampires, werewolves, werepanthers, witches, shapeshifters, and fairies, Bon Temps is anything but your typical town. HBO’s True Blood first created chaos when scientists discovered how to make synthetic blood that allowed vampires to live with humans peacefully…sort of.

Let’s take a look back at the first three seasons of mass chaos in small-town Bon Temps, Louisiana.

Season One Major Findings and Happenings:
Sookie Stackhouse can read minds but not those of vampires and starts dating vampire Bill Compton
Tara Thornton, Sookie’s best friend, has a crush on Sookie’s brother, Jason Stackhouse, and has been abused by her alcoholic mother
-Sookie’s grandma, Adele Stackhouse, is murdered in her own home
-We meet Vampire Sheriff of Area Five Eric Northman, his child Pam De Beaufort, who both run the vampire club Fangtasia
Rene Lenier was the serial killer of the Merlotte’s waitresses, not Jason Stackhouse

Season Two Major Findings and Happenings:
-Maenad Maryann Forrester comes to Bon Temps to stir things up, putting the entire town under a sexual euphoric spell
Arlene Fowler and Terry Bellefleur get engaged while Sookie rejects Bill’s proposal of marriage
– Tara falls in love with Eggs while Hoyt Fortenberry and Jessica Hamby fall in love
– Jason joined and left The Fellowship of the Sun
-With Bill’s help, Sam Merlotte kills Maryann

Season Three Major Findings and Happenings:
-Arlene is pregnant with Rene’s devil baby
-Bill is kidnapped by the Vampire King of Mississippi, Russell Edgington, who is on a quest for power
-With the help of Alcide Herveaux to protect her, thanks to Eric Northman, Sookie sets out to find her vampire lover
-Sam tracks down his real family and finds out he has a shapeshifter brother, Tommy Mickens, who is forced to particpate in dog fights by his family
-After finding out Russell killed his entire family, Eric kills his lover Talbot and enlists the help of Bill to bury Russell in cement

John Billingsley Talks True Blood, Mike Spencer, and Nudity

John Billingsley, True Blood, Mike Spencer

John Billingsley Is Alive and Well

While we may not have seen Mike Spencer around Bon Temps very much in Season 3, but it’s still nice to know that he’s alive and well, able to show up for moments of creepy awkwardness or to do inappropriate things to a tree or Jane Bodehouse. This is oddly comforting because it means that talented actor John Billingsley still has a future on True Blood.

John is most well-known for his role on Star Trek: Enterprise, but he’s one of those actors that has been a guest star on just about every popular show of the past two decades. In a video interview from this year’s Dallas All-Con, John reminisces about the craziness of True Blood Season 2:

“Last season was sort of anomalous, insofar as we were all under the thrall of the demoness and led to do graphic, sexual things. That’s over now. Although I still have the nudity waiver I got to sign on my bathroom wall, which I framed.”

These days he’s in between jobs, having lost out on a part in a new AMC series to a guy who’s been his “nemesis” for years. John jokingly refers to himself as a “kept man,” and says that his wife, Bonita Friedericy, is working full time on the NBC spy comedy Chuck as General Beckman.

We wish him all the best in finding another exciting project and look forward to seeing him again on True Blood!

Vampire Boom Gives The Economy A Much Needed Boost

Alexander Skarsgard, True Blood, Eric NorthmanHollywood has always used aliens, zombies, viruses, and a dash of apocalypse scare to thrill movie goers in to paying big bucks, but who knew True Blood and the rest of the vampires were helping Hollywood pay the rent.

Recently the Twilight paraody Vampires Suck made $20 million, while 5 million viewers regularly watch True Blood on HBO. When it comes to books, Justin Cronin’s The Passage, Stephanie Meyer’s Breaking Dawn and Charlaine Harris’ Dead and Gone have all made it to the best seller list.

It seems that since the introduction of Twilight, the vampire genre has grossed an impressive $7 billion. From spooky and mythical tales, the genre has now become an inexhaustible and money making industry. The Hollywood Reporter breaks down the numbers:

  • Film: $3 billion
  • Publishing: $1.6 billion
  • Merchandising: $600 million
  • TV, DVDs: $1.2 billion
  • Other: $600 million

How exactly do these supernaturals do it? Simple. Vampires can easily be transported into any genre. It seems there versatility is endless. Julie Plec, writer and producer for Vampire Diaries notes,

“By starting with one simple mythological creature that’s been part of our literary universe for centuries, you can create a story that has it all: romance, horror, action, special effects, sex, epic love, wish fulfillment, romantic leading men, delicious bad-boy villains, female badasses, damsels in distress, death, monsters and, ultimately, the perfectly flawed hero who would give it all up if it meant they wouldn’t have to spend eternity alone… It doesn’t get more universal than that.”

With versatility comes money making. Movies bring in money right away; the Twilight saga has brought in $1.76 billion in box office sales alone. While television shows don’t tend to make money as upfront as movies, True Blood and Vampire Diaries bring a big fan base and have shown good sales in the aftermarket sales. Both shows are predicted to earn impressive figures in the coming years: $100 million-$125 million from “Vampire Diaries” and $50 million-$75 million from True Blood. And this isn’t including the DVD sales, which will produce high figures; already the Season 2 DVD of True Blood has sold a million copies.

With great stories also comes great music tie ins. Soundtracks are another crucial component to selling the vampire genre. The Twilight soundtrack and scores for the currents movies have easily brought in $50 million.

As for books, not only are Harris and Meyers seeing their stories fly off the shelves, but there are scores of vampire novels being consumed by readers, which makes about $1.6 billion.

Along with music and books, video games are also using the vampire theme to generate income. With so many poplar titles out at $40 each, the video game industry is easily raking in $200 million.

The vampire genre doesn’t seem to be dying out either; future projects are already in the works in every industry. So vampire fans open up another bottle of True Blood, pop in Season 1 of Vampire Diaries, download the score to Twilight and play some Legacy of Kain because vampires are doing their part to help the recession.

True Blood Season 2 DVD Review

In advance of the release of True Blood, Season 2, on DVD May 25, the-trades.com reviewed the the series and the five disc set. I won’t recount the entire season here, as most of us have already seen it, but I will focus on the site’s review and the DVD set’s features.

The-Trades.com cites their highlights of the season, including:

1. Sookie‘s discovery of another telepath in Dallas

2. Eric‘s opinion of human children just before asking Sophie-Anne a favor

3. Bill‘s reunion with his maker, Lorena

While the site gave a very thorough and concise rundown of Season 2, I think it fell short when recounting Season 2 hits.

There were several well acted arcs and scenes beyond those noted above:

1. Jason‘s slow descent into the Fellowship of the Sun and his interactions with Steve, Sarah, and Luke (who could forget when Sarah tells him that God wants them to be together or when she tells him they must confess to Steve?)

2. Sam‘s shift in front of the deranged, brain-washed townsfolk (and Jason and Andy‘s reactions)

3. Sookie‘s blood bond with Eric, and the effect it has on her, in addition to her affinity to and compassion for Godric

There are too many more to recount! Luckily, the Season 2 disc set will let you relive your favorite scenes again and again. In addition to all 12 episdoes, the set also includes commentary on episodes 2, 7, 8, 10, 11, and 12 from all the major players including Anna Paquin, Stephen Moyer, Ryan Kwanten, Rutina Wesley, Sam Trammell, Nelsan Ellis, and Alexander Skarsgard. Bonus features also include Fellowship of the Sun sermons designed to incite the vampire hate in you led by either Reverend Steve Newlin or his wife, Sarah; and, “The Vampire Report” news magazine covering all current events involving vampires with a commercial for the American Vampire League and public service announcements geared toward vampires (have you been tested for Hepatitis D?). All in all, a well conceived season with a series of bonus features designed to enhance the existing episode content and further your entrenchment into the supernatural world of Sookie Stackhouse.

Season 2 will be released on Standard DVD, Blu-Ray disc, and in digital download format on May 25 and will be available from the HBO Store, Amazon, and iTunes.

HBO’s True Blood Included in Emmy Campaign Package

The race for Emmy nominations have already started as networks begin to send their Emmy campaign boxes to the 14,000 members of the TV academy who will cast their vote for their selections.  HBO has already sent out some of their campaign boxes which features booklets and DVDs of their TV series, specials, movies, documentaries, and the full miniseries “The Pacific.” HBO will also be sending out an additional separate package on May 5 that will contain DVDs of “You Don’t Know Jack” (Al Pacino as Dr. Jack Kevorkian), “The Special Relationship” (Michael Sheen and Dennis Quaid as British Prime Minister Tony Blair and U.S. President Bill Clinton) and Bill Maher’s special “I’m Not Wrong.”

The big news for True Blood fans is that two episodes from season 2 of True Blood have been included in the selection for consideration for an Emmy nomination, “Shake and Fingerpop” (Season 2, Episode 4) and “I Will Rise Up” (Season 2, Episode 9).

“Shake and Fingerpop” originally aired July 12, 2009 and was directed by Michael Lehmann and written by Alan Ball which focused on Eric, Sookie and Bill traveling to Dallas to help find the missing head of the local vampire community. They take Jessica along but on arrival, the driver meeting them attempts to abduct Sookie. Maryann throws a party for Tara who has now moved into Sookie‘s house. A lot of people show up and once again she weaves her magic, revealing something interesting about herself in the process. Sam Merlotte isn’t sure starting a relationship with Daphne is a good idea but she tells him she knows his secret. Lafayette is still recovering from his wounds when Eric makes him a proposition. Jason is still making an impression at Church camp and is asked to move in with Sarah and Steve Newlin.

“I Will Rise Up” originally aired August 16, 2009 and was directed by Scott Winant and was written by Nancy Oliver which focused on the vampire and human clean up in the aftermath of the explosion. Eric tricks Sookie into drinking some of his blood, much to Bill‘s dismay. As a result of the lapse in security, Godric‘s leadership falls under review but his response surprises everyone, especially Eric, who begs him not to go through with his plan. In Bon Temps, Maryann is out to find Sam Merlotte and complete the ritual sacrifice. She casts a spell on everyone in Sam‘s bar to get them to look for him. Lafayette and Tara‘s mother forcibly remove her from Sookie‘s house. Hoyt and Jessica get used to their situation and Hoyt decides it’s time to introduce his true love to his vampire-hating mother.

Sophie-Anne LeClerq – Vampire Philosopher Queen

True Blood is one of the few TV shows worth repeated viewings, which is a testament to the quality of the production from conception to realization. Alan Ball may claim that True Blood is popcorn television, but there’s real meat (or is that blood) in there as well.

The True Blood Season 2 episode Frenzy, written by Alan Ball, attracted a fair amount of criticism after its first airing in the US. Critics described the episode as being too wordy; filled with exposition at the expense of action and plot development.

The scenes with the vampire Queen of Louisiana, Sophie-Anne LeClerq, were those that attracted the greatest amount of negative criticism, much of it aimed at Evan Rachel Wood whose responsibility it was to bring the wordy Queen to life.

So who is Sophie-Anne LeClerq and why is she so wordy? Does she spout philosophical wisdom or base sophistry?

Sophie-Anne is an immortal being, who in Alan Ball’s words: “very powerful, capricious, and most likely insane.” She has been a vampire for several hundred years, but was turned in her teens. She has accumulated the knowledge of several lifetimes, but interprets it all with the mind of a teenager.

We first meet Sophie-Anne in her Day House. Inside it is a luxurious confection of light, water, and desirable things (objects, humans, and vampires). Outside, dioramas of sand and sea block out the real world. It is opulent, perfect, unreal, and terribly sterile.

Queen Sophie-Anne LeClerq explains to a somewhat nonplussed Vampire Bill that everything in existence imagined itself into being. She also takes the philosophical position that there is no such thing as “good” (and by extension “evil”) or “time”. She forces her companions to play endless games of Yahtzee, which she extols as the “most egalitarian game in the world” as it is based purely on the chance roll of dice and requires no skill.

She is her own creation. She is what she imagines herself to be. The philosopher René Descartes famously posited “I think therefore I am” and Sophie-Anne appears to think she is one of Plato’s imaginary Philosopher Kings (or, in her case, Queen) and, therefore, she is.

In understanding Sophie-Anne you might remember the scene in the movie A Fish Called Wanda, where Otto (don’t call me stupid) West asserts that, that “Apes don’t read philosophy” and Wanda shouts back at him “Yes they do, Otto. They just don’t understand it.”

Now I’m not calling Sophie-Anne stupid (I wouldn’t dare), but she is a cautionary tale of knowledge without wisdom, power without limits, behavior without boundaries, life without death. She is the polar opposite of Sookie, who is wise but not learned, powerful (in her own special way) but ethical, strong but kind, and bounded by her mortality.

True Blood is One of the Top Ten Shows of 2009

True Blood has been put high on the list of yet another ‘Top 10 Shows of 2009‘ list. This time, it is number 3 on the list of Hal Boedeker of the Orlando Sentinel. Here’s what Hal had to say about True Blood:

True Blood” is television’s best vampire series. Its stellar second season featured fierce contributions from Alexander Skarsgard as the sexy, underhanded vampire EricMichelle Forbes as the mischief-making, orgy-throwing Maryann; and Ryan Kwanten as the surprisingly heroic Jason. Of course, Anna Paquin remains the show’s vital center as lovable, mind-reading heroine Sookie Stackhouse.

Of course, this synopsis of the reasons that True Blood Season 2 was so great missed a few other reasons, like the short-lived Godric storyline (which Allan Hyde was so amazing in), the tender, loving relationship between Sookie Stackhouse and her vampire love Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer)  and the set-ups of future storylines that are sure to come up in Season 3.

To see the rest of the rankings, go to the Orlando Sentinel and take a look.
