True Blood Wins Tubey Awards

True Blood, HBOThe Tubey Awards were announced and some familiar faces from True Blood were on the list. Tubey Awards are awarded to tops shows in many divisions that were voted for by the fans from the website Television Without Pity. In each category the staff would pick who they thought would take the win and then who the fans actually voted for as the winners.  Godric, who was played by Allan Hyde, was welcomed on this list as the “most welcome new character” and he also beat out Sun and Jin from Lost for “best death scene”.   Pam from Fangtasia, who is played by the beautiful Kristin Bauer van Straten, was voted “Most Wrongly Underused Character”.  While Pam’s ruined pumps didn’t win for “best performance by an inanimate object” it was the Television Without Pity staff pick. The pumps came from a moment where Eric Northman asked Pam to look for whatever had attacked Sookie in Season 2.

We are sure that this is just the beginning of awards that will grace the actors and actresses of True Blood.

Allen Hyde Talks True Blood

Allen Hyde is making more movies overseas in record time. Allen Hyde first appeared in True Blood as Godric, during season 2, and viewers have been able to see him also in Eric Northman’s flash backs during Season 3. Many viewers fell in love with his boyish face and manly body, who was sorrowful for the bad doings of vampires.

“He has realized that his deeds as a vampire have not been good. The murders and rapes he committed cannot be excused. He has had a revelation. I have also been involved with bullying in my youth. Of course it was not as serious as that, but the feeling is the same.”

He recently was interviewed by a Norwegian newspaper Dagbladet. He talks about his new movie in Norway titled “Exterior“. The film is making headlines because it was recorded in just one week. The film involves artist Marie Kristiansen and director Patrik Syversen. It should be in theaters next year. Allen says that one of the reasons he did the film was due to Gitte Witt, who plays one of the female leads in “Exterior“.  She plays one of his friends and the dialogue easily came together because they were able to act much like they do in real life. He found out that people from the same country and similar backgrounds try to stick together.  He does talk about his time on True Blood,

“It is exciting to work in these kinds of huge productions. As an actor you can find out quickly that it requires something else from you when it’s all about effects rather than dialogue. It is difficult to discuss character development – you should only do what you’re told because they know what they are doing and will make sense in the finished product.”

we are excited for Allen Hyde and wish him much success in all of his future endeavors!  Make sure to tune in to True Blood this Sunday on HBO to find out will will happening next!

Allan Hyde Said Godric Has to Ooze a Calm Confidence

How do you immitate someone who is 2000 years old?  You have to make it believable and emanate an aura of confidence and authority.  That’s what Allan Hyde told True-Blood.org. It’s what he tried to do in his portrayal of Godric, True Blood‘s oldest vampire from Season 2.

“I looked at how the elderly react and interact with other people – they ooze a calm confidence without forcing anything on anyone – they will set an example and expect it to be followed.”

When asked how he felt about Godric‘s suicide last season, Allan said he understands the rationale although it’s hard to validate.  He had lived longer than his share of life but with suicide there are other people involved.  “It’s a selfish thing to do and Godric hurts people and who knows what’s to be of Eric now without an ideal?”

Asked if there were things in his own life that he shares with his character, Allan said yes, but on a much smaller scale.

“I have experienced having an epiphany, if you may, about stuff I had been doing that was not nice at all.  This I applied in the character and intensified out of proportions.”

It wasn’t until after he was offered the role that Allan discovered how huge the HBO series was.  Not having heard of the show or the book series True Blood is based on, he was astounded by the popularity.

Allan had stated before that the cast of True Blood made it very easy for him to settle in.  But trying to portray the calmness and confidence of his character while admiring and trying to impress everyone around him was “nerve-racking and borderline terrifying”.

On top of everything else, Allan, like the other cast members, found it difficult to talk with fangs.  Besides having to get used to those extra long, pointy teeth in his mouth, Allan also had to speak Swedish with fangs, a language foreign to him (Allan is Danish).

Has playing Godric brough fame to Allan?  He said he can still “walk around unnoticed” but occasionally “someone will introduce themselves and we will talk for a second”.  And although his mother will send him online links to read once in a while,

“I think it’s best not to look at it too much.  You don’t want to get a big head or have people ruin your confidence.  But it’s nice when people say nice things.”

On ending the interview, Allan said thank you to his fans for being supportive of him and Godric.  That support has helped bring him back into Season 3.  And who knows, maybe he’ll get a chance for an appearance next season as well.

HBO Asks Allan Hyde About Godric

Oh. My. Godric. Does anything else need to be said?

The folks at HBO recognized the love we all have for Eric’s maker, and asked the actor, Allan Hyde, to answer a few questions concerning True Blood and Godric‘s history.

HBO immediately points out what a huge hit Godric was as a character and asked if Hyde had any idea why. Hyde says he was not expecting such a reaction.

“…I think people were looking for some humanity in the vampire crowd. Even though Bill loves Sookie and everything, they were looking for someone who showed more compassion and humanity, and Godric did that.”

Hyde also points out that Godric was built up from the beginning of season 2 as such an important influence in Eric‘s life, it was probably surprising to the audience that Godric was just a kid.

And all that love for Godric carried over to the actor himself, who was now being recognized.

“I didn’t know what to do with myself. I’m from Denmark, and we don’t have that fan culture at all.”

But playing such an old character, no matter how well-liked, is no easy feat.

“You can never really do enough research to learn what a 2,000-year-old vampire would know because that’s impossible. But you can at least try to imitate it and believe in yourself.”

Hyde says he approached Godric‘s attitude as an elderly person – calm and cool and leading by example. Considering Godric‘s been around for, oh, everything, HBO asked Hyde what exactly Godric has done.

“He’s done it all. He’s been in every war, on every side. Good, bad… everything. I personally imagine that he started off being treated really badly by humans, that he was probably a slave at one point before he was turned.”

Hyde suggests that resentment caused Godric to turn on the human race once he became vampire and it wasn’t until later that Godric realized all that killing was for nothing.

In the most recent episode of True Blood, we saw Godric and Eric in Nazi SS uniforms, but as we’ve learned, don’t always believe what you see.

“They’re disguised as Nazis so they can walk around without being asked questions, but they’re not trying to be part of the war – they have their own personal reasons for being there.”

The unfortunate thing is that Godric is, well, dead. Not just “vampire dead,” like burned to a crisp dead. This makes Godric appearances on the show a little tricky, though not impossible. Hyde‘s not worried.

Godric is so much apart of Eric that he’ll be continually reminded of stuff that Godric has been a part of in the past. So I think he’ll be in Eric‘s head a lot, but I don’t know if it will be important enough to appear in flashbacks. But there’s hope for sure – vampires have a lot of past to cover.”

Since they seem to have a penchant for flashbacks, hopefully we’ll see more of Godric through Eric‘s vivid memory.

Allan Hyde: The Challenge of Playing Godric

Last season we saw 2,000 year-old Godric face the sun.  It was a heartbreaker for both Eric and Sookie and for many of the thousands of True Blood fans watching HBO‘s hit series.

Allan Hyde, who plays Godric, the vampire who sired Eric Northman (played by Alexander Skarsgard), will be returning in Season 3 in flashbacks.  Talking with Starry Constellation Magazine, Allan spoke about his character.

He would not say anything specific about the Season 3 flashbacks, but he did say the characters are getting more attention and we’ll get to know them better, as well as their secrets.

“For myself, Godric is a great way of seeing what it is like during the different stages of the vampire life. In the second season, we see him at 1,000 years old when he lived in the wilderness and turned Eric.  We also saw the contemporary Godric and two polar opposites of the character.  We saw him very beastlike and very humanlike.”

Getting the part right out of high school in Denmark, Allan found the role challenging.  Although Godric is 2,000 years old, he is still a teenager.  How do you “ooze this experience, age and wisdom that a 2,000 year old vampire would have”?  No one knows, so research wasn’t forthcoming. Allan had to not only make it up, but also make it believable.

Allan was offered the role in True Blood while still in Denmark.  He had never heard of the show but was ready to take on this huge adventure.  It is customary to take a couple of years off after high school before starting university.  So, although coming to the U.S. to portray an ancient vampire was not something he had thought of doing, Allan embraced the opportunity and did his homework.

He said the rapport with the cast came instantly.  In the first flashback last season, the scene involved Alexander (from Sweden), two other actors (one from Sweden, the other from Finland) and himself, from Denmark.  They all had coffee together to meet each other and to translate the lines into Swedish.  “They were just great people.”

Asked why he thinks True Blood is so popular, Allan said that it’s exciting, scary and sexy – a story and universe that people find fascinating.  He watches because he enjoys the storylines and likes the way the characters develop.  The various layers include both funny and scary aspects.

“It’s just got a little bit of everything and I’m really excited to see what happens in the third season.  If you sit down and think about it, it’s a comment on society.  It deals with everything and the problems that we see in modern society, but doesn’t pull specific things out of their element so you have to think about it.”

We will learn more about the history of Godric and Eric in Season 3 flashbacks.

Allan Hyde on Success in America

Allan Hyde found it a bit overwhelming, but a great experience, to film in Hollywood.  Allan plays Godric, the 2000 year-old vampire in HBO‘s hit series, True Blood.

On the website, allan-hyde.net, Allan said that in Denmark, actors work closely with directors to develop their roles.  For True Blood, however, he was expected to find his character on his own.

At the age of 20, Allan said there were high expectations of him, as he played a major character in this hugely successful series.  “I got no help – no one to blame if things went wrong.”

But on the set, Allan found everyone extremely responsive and helpful, much to his surprise.  Making the assumption that the now well-known actors would not have time for him, he found that not to be the case at all.

“Everyone joked and had fun, talked about personal things and gave good advice.  If I have to mention specific people I hung out with, it will be Lenny, my stand-in, but also Alexander Skarsgård, Mariana Klaveno, Stephen Moyer and Anna Paquin.  Actually all of them I had scenes with,” Allan told TjekTV of Denmark.

Considering that True Blood is so popular in the U.S., Allan felt very strange to be recognized in a country where he was a foreigner.  Although he was on his way back to Denmark, Allan hopes to find new roles in the U.S.

Fans will be seeing more of Allan as Godric in Season 3 of True Blood, which begins June 13th.

VIDEO: Interview with Allan Hyde at EyeCon

allan-hyde2Allan Hyde, a Danish actor who plays Godric in Season 2 of True Blood, gives us his insights into his character Godric, who’s a two-thousand-year-old vampire and Eric Northman’s (Alexander Skarsgard) maker.

During the interview, Allan Hyde conveys his delight on working in Season 2 of True Blood:

“I just came on in the Second Season […] I thought the second season was amazing […] the stuff I liked was […] the different story-lines branching out […] you got to see different sides of [characters].”

On Godric’s accent, Allan Hyde explains,

“The role of Godric […] he’s supposed to be two thousand years old […] he’s been all over […] he probably speaks a dozen different languages, if not more […] his accent […] you can’t really trace it back to somewhere and also it’s […] a hybrid form […]”

When asked about his character Godric in Season 3, Allan indicated that he’s excited about reading the scripts for Season 3, but when asked about spoilers, he said,

“I think they already did leak it a little bit […] I don’t know what it’s going to be but I know that I’m going back for a flashback […] or flashbacks.”

Allan explains how he draws on his youthful experiences in portraying Godric,

“I had a point in my life where I was young and I had a problem with authority. It wasn’t a big thing […] and I was really, really bad and […] I made life really miserable for a couple of people back then and I really regret it. […] and that was what I applied to the character of Godric […] I had one day where [I had] kind of like an epiphany […] I just realized […] that this was all wrong […] and I took that […] and applied it to the Godric character […]”

Fans of True Blood might like to know that as of this week, Alan Ball and the True Blood cast are back in the studios filming Season 3 of True Blood.

Many thanks to Michi for putting the video up on Youtube!

Allan Hyde: Rising True Blood Star

“That was a fantastic experience when tiny little me stood in front of the camera

and my two meter tall cast mate Alexander Skarsgard fell to

his knees in front of me. I felt the magic of

being an actor then.”

allan_hyde

Allan Hyde, the twenty year old Danish actor, has made quite an impression on HBO’s True Blood fans. Allan plays the 2000 year old vampire Godric, Eric Northman’s (Alexander Skarsgard) maker in the hit HBO series. Although he appeared in only four episodes of True Blood’s second season, Allan Hyde’s Godric has become extremely popular with True Blood’s viewers.

He is a man of many talents. Besides his native Danish, he also speaks English, German and French. He has won the literary Robert Award for Best Short Story (2009) and amazingly, he also finds the time to play the guitar and sing. In Denmark, Allan Hyde has a string of appearances on both the Danish stage and screen. On stage, he has, for example, played Gavroche in Les Miserables but he is perhaps best known for his part in Denmark’s TV3’s 2900 Happiness. He has also provided the voice dubbing for Ron Weasley in the Danish release of the Harry Potter films. However in 2009, he was cast in the critically acclaimed HBO series True Blood as the 2000 year old Godric and the rest, as they say, is history.

In 2009, international acclaim came knocking on Allan Hyde’s door. Allan Ball happened to need a Scandinavian teenager for True Blood. Allan Hyde’s agent heard about it and convinced Hyde to send a tape to Alan Ball who was so impressed with it that there was no need for Hyde to undergo a formal audition. Hyde, at this point, was two months away from graduating from his high school in Zealand, Copenhagen, but he seized at the chance and moved to Los Angeles immediately. He explains his seemingly hasty decision,

“It was my dream. To be a professional (full-time) actor. To live off what I love. And it wasn’t the most important thing about high school to get a certificate with grades on. Most important were the knowledge and friends I’d already won through those three years.”

We are thankful for his decision because the character Godric has proved to be highly popular with viewers and with creator Alan Ball. Hyde’s performance of Godric has brought Hyde acclaim, catapulting him into the hearts of True Blood’s fans. In a recent interview, Allan Ball has also hinted at the possible return of Allan Hyde as Godric in flashbacks in Season 3.

Of his role as Godric in True Blood, Allan Hyde says,

“When I agreed to do it, I had no idea how big it (True Blood) was. I hadn’t heard about True Blood yet. And to be completely honest, I felt that a vampire series was a little boring. I only knew Buffy and that was a girl’s show.”

True Blood, set against a vivid Southern Gothic mise-en-scene, has captured viewers’Godric and Eric Northman imagination with its gloriously gory, fiendish, darkly funny script. Populated with charismatic vampires, small town kooks and other assorted supernatural beings, True Blood is hardly filled with the usual vampire clichés which were the initial responses of critics and naysayers who subjected True Blood to lukewarm reviews.

Instead, proving his critics wrong, Allan Ball, Academy Award-winning writer, has sprinkled his magic dust over the HBO series and bewitched critics and viewers alike. According to HBO, True Blood’s Season 2 averaged 10.8 million viewers per episode, up 39% from last season, proving to be an even bigger hit than HBO’s The Sopranos. Indeed, True Blood’s biggest strength lies in its ability to appeal across a wide demographic spectrum.

As Allan Hyde further explains,

“I realized at once that this would be a unique and intelligent series. Vampires are an allegory for the darkside of humanity. Their race is prone to a mixture of homophobia and racism, and that’s what the series deals with in a brilliant way, I think. That’s why I fell for True Blood – instantly and completely.”

Allan Hyde’s portrayal of Godric, an immortal being who also happened to be older than Jesus, was pitch perfect. But at the same time, Hyde acknowledges that, as the youngest cast member, he felt the least experienced,

“I was utterly inexperienced and everything was overwhelming. To be the show’s alpha among the vampires on top of all this felt like immense pressure on me. The directors wanted me to be exactly like I was on the videotape they fell for. But they had never seen me ‘live’. That’s why I had a certain insecurity in the beginning. Would I really be able to deliver or was the tape just a lucky coincidence? […] There I was, in a foreign country and was supposed to play a character who was as different to mine as may be. At the same time, everything took place in English which meant that I needed to repeat my lines many times before every take or I’d stumble over the words.”

But it is a testimony to the highly talented and mutually supportive ensemble cast of True Blood that Allan Hyde rapidly became comfortable in his role as Godric,

“[…] I felt I caught the character and people around me backed me with praise and recognition. That was a fantastic experience when tiny little me little me stood in front of the camera and my two meter tall cast mate Alexander Skarsgard fell to his knees in front of me. I felt the magic of being an actor then.”

Now that Season 2 of True Blood has finished its run in the US, Allan Hyde has been a very busy man. He has, for example, auditioned for a new Gus van Sant movie. Allan Hyde explains:

“It is as if all the big shots want to see what I am able to do now. I’m going to lots of auditions that aspiring actors who have lived in Hollywood for years don’t even get close to. There’s no doubt that I have to play my cards now. I have to try and get more parts as my name is hot over here because the clock is ticking in L.A. It’s all business.”

Meanwhile, a stage role awaits him in Denmark in 2010. However, when it comes to English language roles, Hyde feels that one of the hurdles he faces is the language. While he speaks the language fluently (he has a Danish mother and a British father), he feels that it’s difficult for him to hide both the British and Danish accents. He elaborates,

“That’s the biggest issue right now. I’m doing everything I can to change it. I practice all the time and work with a dialect coach on a daily basis. I almost got the accent now because at my last audition they didn’t even realize that I’m a foreigner.”

However, it is new found fame that Hyde admits take some getting used to. He admits:

“It needs some getting used to and one has to forget about Danish Jantelovn. Over here, people would be offended if you wouldn’t show your pride and appreciate the chance you got. To downplay your own results is a Danish thing and one you should avoid here […] At home, it’s not like everybody and anybody is writing to me that I’m ‘suerpcute’ and ‘superhot’ and therefore I’m immensely flattered. But on the flipside, I have no idea what kind of people they are. I’m not looking for praise on the internet but sometimes it’s unavoidable. And my mom’s reading it too. She’s my biggest fan and she’s sending me links whenever she finds something funny about me online.”

Judging from the recent interview with Allan Ball, fans of Allan Hyde can no doubt look forward to his appearances in Season 3 of True Blood. As to further appearances in his subsequent Hollywood career, we wish Allan Hyde all best wishes for his future roles.

Romantic Dilemma Brewing For Sookie Stackhouse On True Blood

Sookie's True Blood MenMTV’s Hollywood Crush asks True Blood fans to “find out which Bon Temps Man is your Perfect Match.”  It’s looking more and more like Alan Ball is setting up poor Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin) for a tough choice.  Maybe Sookie should take a look at MTV’s handy guide so she can make a more informed decision.

She’s already taken a pass on “the do-good loner,” Sam Merlotte (Sam Trammell) in Season 1. You know the type, the one that would bring you breakfast in bed than ditch you for the big game. The only problem is you don’t really know him since he won’t tell you about his childhood.

With current flame, Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer), he has lit Sookie‘s passion and won her love. It seems that Sookie loves:

“The southern gentleman. A guy who’ll open doors, carry your packages and even risk frying in the sun to ensure your safety.”

He is the quintessential man (vampire) who sweeps you all your feet with his southern charm and makes you feel that you are the most important person in the world to him and you would always know that his love for you is eternal.

However, now that Eric Northman (Alexander Skarsgård) is making a play for Sookie and has tricked her into drinking some of his thousand-year-old blood, she’s finding that he’s more than the tough guy we got to know in Season 1.  She’s learning that Eric (Alexander Skarsgård) is:

The bad boy with the big heart. Your guy is like a Tootsie Pop: hard on the outside, but soft and gooey on the inside — once he lets you in, that is.

Sookie‘s dilemma will likely not be resolved in Season 2, so viewers have a lot more romantic drama to look forward to with Season 3.

Which Bon Temps man would you choose?  Maybe you crave the wise, old soul type. A man who knows a lot about himself and the world around him.  If that is the case then Godric (Allen Hyde) would be the one to fulfill your fantasies.

Perhaps you prefer the brawny, blue-collar worker type who always looks good with his shirt off and you don’t mind having to teach him a few things about staying away from the wrong crowd.  He could sure teach you a few things that you never knew about as well.  Then your type would be Jason Stackhouse (Ryan Kwanten) who is adorable both inside and out.

If you like your man to be good with his hands and a good fixer-upper but,  don’t mind he has a few skeletons in his closet then Eggs (Mehcad Brooks) is the one for you.  The perfect guy to nurture those old wounds that are not visible on the surface.

Or maybe you just want some fun-loving guy you can party with and not worry he will every take advantage of you and will always tell you the truth about how you look in those jeans. If you want a man like that then Lafayette (Nelsan Ellis) is the guy you want.  You may not be his type but, you would always know you can rely on him to be there for you when things get tough.

Check out MTV’s perfect match descriptions to see all the choices.
