Janina Gavankar Gets Geeky After True Blood

From Shapeshifter to Far Cry 4:

Luna and Sam S4 Ep7Fans of HBO’s True Blood will remember Janina Gavankar as Sam Merlotte’s (Sam Trammell) shapeshifting girlfriend, Luna Garza. Since she left the show at the start of Season 6, she has appeared on TV shows such as The League and The Vampire Diaries. More recently she has taken on the role of Meredith Bose in the new series, The Mysteries of Laura.

Besides her passion for acting, Janina is an avid gamer. As a result, she is currently working on the video game, Far Cry 4. it is a game which she is very excited to be involved with:

I play Amita in the game and I cannot believe that this happened to me. It is an incredible video game; it’s badass. If you have a gamer friend on your Christmas list this is the game for him/her. I think I would say that even if I weren’t in the game.

And – because her life isn’t hectic enough as it is – she is also launching a new website for the older generation geeks. The website is called AltFound.com and Janina had this to say about it:

You can sign up now to be one of the first people to know about it. It is basically a website for grown geeks who are not childish or nostalgic, we all have grown and have diverse interests.

Recently Janina got to sit down with Chelsea Lewis from The Celebrity Cafe and chat about all things geeky in her life. If you want to find out more about what she had to say about Far Cry 4, AltFound.com and what it was like working on a show such as True Blood, then please click here.

Janina Gavankar Stars in NBC’s The Mysteries of Laura

The True Blood Actor Shapeshifts Into a Homicide Detective:

Janina Gavankar stars as Meredith Bose in NBCs Mysteries of LauraUp until recently, Janina Gavankar starred as shapeshifter Luna Garza in HBO’s True Blood. Howver, she has now joined the cast of NBC’s The Mysteries of Laura which premiered on September 17th 2014. The Mysteries of Laura follows the life of homicide detective Laura Diamond (played by Debra Messing). Janina plays fellow detective, Meredith Bose, a character who is not only is envious of Laura, but also finds her husband, Jake (Josh Lucas), attractive:

We’re going to see why Meredith is like that. … I just know that Meredith has hero worship and hatred at the same time. [Laura’s] just so good, but d***it, Meredith just wants her shine. It sucks to be in the shadow of somebody… Meredith is a very classy lady and would never do anything to be disrespectful in the workplace, but I think she thinks Jake is real cute. [However] a lot of things can happen [on the show] and we don’t know what those are yet.

It seems Meredith may cause complications between Laura and her husband – even though the pair are in the midst of a divorce!

According to IMDb.com, the series synopsis is as follows:

A single mom NYPD homicide detective cracks case after case while raising wild twin boys and locking horns with her less than helpful police detective ex-husband.

Janina Gavankar Talks About Luna’s Role in Season 6 of HBO’s True Blood

Severe Consequences for Luna’s Actions to Come in Season 6:

Janina Gavankar stars in HBO's True Blood

After skin-walking on national television, what will happen to shifter Luna? With no hint of her fate from the few clips that have been released of True Blood‘s sixth season, one can only imagine what has happened until the show’s premiere on June 16.

Actress Janina Gavankar only fuels the mystery on her character, commenting that her character’s move will make a big impact on her character’s species as a whole:

“She just outed everyone in the shifter community, so now the world knows there’s more than one supernatural creature on this earth. Holy. F**k. Imagine being a human watching that. As it is, you have to deal with the idea of there being vampires. This is potentially bad for every shifter on the planet. You remember when [the vampires] ‘came out of the coffin? It’s like restarting the series all over again for that supernatural group.”

Not only does she hint that Luna will be facing lots of trouble, but she also says that scene involving Sam Merlotte (Sam Trammell) brought her to tears.

“I wasn’t even in the shot with him — I was off to the side, like 100 feet away — and the stuff I could hear him doing was making me lose my mind. I was in a warm up tent 100 feet away, and I was crying. True Blood is A-game all day long. I have nothing but major love for him. I go so lucky that I got paired up with him. He’s tremendous.”

What was the scene? We can’t wait to see!

True Blood Shapeshifter Actress Shares Her Musical Creativity

Janina Gavankar Releases a Creative Music Video Showcasing Her Musical Side:

janina-gavankar-billboard magActress Janina Gavankar plays shapeshifter Luna Garza on HBO series True Blood. Ms. Gavankar has released a single and accompanying music video for her song, “Waiting for Godot”. A very creative artist, Ms. Gavankar plans to release a video for each track on her upcoming EP, and has consciously tried to break unstated rules of both music and video production.

Ms. Gavankar studied classical music and percussion as a child. Her EP is still in production with Randy Jackson’s label, Dream Merchant 21. She is unsure what the rest of the tracks will sound like, but has completed at least one other that she talks about in this way:

“very strange, all a cappella, and no moment is like the moment that came before it.”

While acknowledging it as a lofty goal, Ms. Gavankar intends to produce a music video for each track on her EP.

“But I really feel like it’s what I’m supposed to do. It’s the way that I think, it’s the way that I create. It’s all kind of one and the same. I don’t know how to do anything small-scale, much to the dismay of some of the people around me.”

Adding to her creative credentials, Ms. Gavankar produced the “Waiting for Godot” video herself. It was directed by her friend, Caitlin Pashalek. Several years ago, Ms. Pashalek also helmed the video for Ms. Gavankar’s cover of Kanye West’s “Love Lockdown”.

“One stake we set in the ground from the get-go with this was this it wasn’t going to be a ‘regular music video.’ I don’t give a sh** about following any sort of norms. I don’t really care if people think I’m hot. I really set out to make something beautiful that had a strong narrative.”

Ms. Gavankar believes that all people are complex and multi-sided. Music and videos are ways in which she expresses the duality of her own nature. While most of her True Blood cast mates know about her musical side, Ms. Gavankar says she has not outwardly advertised it, but she knows most are aware. She believes her music videos are evidence that, as an actress, she is able to bring true creativity to her performances.

Video: MTV Talks to True Blood Cast at the Golden Globes

Season 5 Looks To Shake Things Up!

Ryan Kwanten as Jason Stackhouse Recently, MTV got to speak to not one, but FOUR cast members from HBO’s True Blood! Ryan Kwanten, Janina Gavankar, Carrie Preston and Joe Manganiello were present, even though True Blood was overlooked for nominations this year. While there is a bit of a wait until Season 5 starts up, the stars were happy to drop a few snippets of information.

Ryan Kwanten hints at maturity developing in Jason Stackhouse, especially since Andy Bellefleur is not currently being the best Sheriff.

Janina Gavankar suggests nothing ever stays perfect in Bon Temps, so perhaps there will be more complications for the Luna/Sam Merlotte relationship? She hopes not:

“I will always have hope for Sam. They are meant to be. Nobody understands you like another shifter.”

Carrie Preston also suggests there will be trouble between Arlene Fowler and Terry Bellefleur — especially now that an old friend of Terry’s has arrived!

As for our fave werewolf, Alcide? Well, his is the quote of the clip:

“We’ve seen that he’s a sweet guy; we’ve seen that he’s the kind of guy that would be great in a relationship. I think that you’re going to be introduced to a side of him that’s going to slam you up against the wall and go for it.”

Really? I’d like to see that!

Make sure you check out the full video and let us know what you think will happen in Season 5.

Video: Interview with the Multi-talented Janina Gavankar

The Music/Info-geek and Tech-nerd Talks About Her Career:

Janina Gavankar as LunaThe multi-talented and very beautiful Janina Gavankar (Luna Garza) was recently interviewed by the Screen Actors Guild Foundation’s National Director Zino Macaluso about her True Blood role and social media/technology.

The tech-mogul / actress / musician was classically trained in music before falling in love with acting in high school.  In college Gavankar majored in Theater Performance and minored in Music Psychology.  She loves to continue using music as a performance medium and was involved in Kanye West’s “Love Lock Down.”  Her first paying gig was in a bank commercial for Mellon Bank and from there, her resume is lengthy.  Before True Blood, she played a major role in Showtime’s The L-Word (starting in the 4th season, like True Blood) as Papi and in the unfortunately short-lived show, The Gates.

She said the most exciting thing, or the thing she loves the most about True Blood are the amazing writers and table-reads.  She gets pumped about the awesome writing.  When everyone sits down to read an episode together, she compares the excitement to an audience watching the episode for the first time.  She also said that because she’s spent so much time in Shreveport, Louisiana she was able to create a rather lengthy mental back story for her TB character Luna.

Outside of her major work, she’s done a lot of social media work.  She has launched a new website for new actors, she maintains a fan page on Facebook and JaninaGavankar.com and is constantly tweeting from @janina.  She also claims to have been the first actor on Twitter, joining back in 2006 when “everyone still hated the word tweeting.”  Her advice to everyone in the social media world is to “be authentic… The YouTube generation can tell when you’re faking it.”  Also, this writer’s personal favorite Internet clip of Gavankar and mentioned in the interview, comes from Funny or Die called “Method Shapeshifting with Marshall Allman.”  Check it out, it’s hilarious.

Below is the full interview, so if you want to watch a full hour of her bubbly self, feel free. Let us know what you think in the comments!

Video: Janina Gavankar’s Wish for True Blood Season 5

Gavankar Interviewed at the 2011 Emmys:

Janina Gavankar HBO promo S4The lovely and seemingly fearless actress who plays shifter Luna Garza on HBO’s True Blood, Janina Gavankar, was interviewed by PopSugarTV at the 2011 Emmys. She admitted that before getting cast, she was not a Truebie! The horror! However, it wasn’t because she didn’t like the show — she simply had never watched it. After getting cast, she promptly devoured seasons 1-3, and obviously fell in love. Who hasn’t?

She explained what it was like to work with such a young co-star (Chloe Noelle, who plays Luna’s daughter, Emma), saying that it was both a pleasure and interesting to see how the little one learned her lines, as she was just learning to read.

So, what does Gavankar want to see during Season 5 of True Blood? Some ass-kicking, naturally. She explains quite candidly:

“I want to see the shifters kick some ass. Come on! You know, I think that Sam has a nice girl that’s going to stand by him, I want to see them join together and show people what shifters are made of.” (As she turns to the camera with a saucy look.)

Actor/comedian Chris Rock walked up during the interview to introduce himself and say he’s a fan of True Blood, which Gavankar says was the highlight of her night. Check out the full interview below:

A Little Birdie Told Me — True Blood PSAs Part 3

New PSAs From True Blood For “It Gets Better”:

Janina Gavankar It Gets Better shirtThis third article is again courtesy of True Blood’s official YouTube page. Joe Manganiello (Alcide Herveaux), Janina Gavankar (Luna), Deborah Ann Woll (Jessica), and Sam Trammell (Sam Merlotte) made “It Gets Better” PSAs for The Trevor Project. In these PSAs they talk about their personal experiences with bullying.

Joe Manganiello talks about being picked on as a kid because he was bigger than the others, but unwilling to use his size as a reason to bully, just because he could. He got picked on for his big ears, which caused his parents to allow his hair to grow longer, in an attempt to cover them up. As a result, the kids started calling him “’Froey Joey”. In high school he stuck up for the kids that were being bullied.

He says:

“I made it my business to stick up for those kids and try to help those kids out, and be a friend to those kids.”

Janina Gavankar was verbally bullied in high school. She says that the kids never said things to her personally, but she found out things were being said about her.  She assures us:

“If you’re gay, straight, artistic, busier than everybody else because you actually have a life and something interesting to think about besides the gossip, and they hate ya for it… that’s OK. I know what all of those girls are doing now. And I’m ok. It gets better. Trust.”

Deborah Ann Woll talks about one incident in school where someone left a note in her locker that said, “Why don’t you just kill yourself because nobody likes you”. It may have been a quote from a movie at the time, but she did not find it amusing. She would get calls in the middle of the night, with people saying mean things. Her poor mother was affected by this, too. They both went through a lot, together. Deborah says all she remembers is wanting to be an actor. She says her dream is what got her through it all, and,

“Despite all of those instances where people made me feel less than, I now have a better understanding of humanity, in a way. I can now be a friend to the lonely. So just remember that it gets better.”

Sam Trammell talks directly to people who are being bullied or contemplating suicide because of being bullied. He says the people who bully others do so because they’re insecure and going through the same difficult times you are, and are acting out. He explains:

“They do not represent the real world outside of school that you’re so quickly moving into. Life moves so fast and if you can just get past this little bump, you’ll see that you’re going to be celebrated for your differences and your uniqueness. You’ll be loved for them. You’re not alone, there’s a great community out there that’s waiting to embrace and love you for who you are. Teenage bullies are not what the world is made of… Please don’t let the senseless actions of a bully take you from us. It gets so much better.”
